- Character Study: Justin Hartley (chicagosplash):
Character Study: Justin Hartley
Por Chiara Milioulis / 21 Sept, 2017

The Illinois native talks similarities and differences from his ‘This Is Us’ character

“It was the best pilot I’d read in my life,” Justin Hartley says about first seeing the script for NBC’s breakout drama, “This Is Us,” which starts its second season Sept. 26. Prior to landing a lead role as Kevin Pearson, Hartley had been used to memorizing hundreds of pages of dialogue during a two-year stint as Adam Newman on “The Young and the Restless,” or the lines of vigilante archer Oliver Queen in “Smallville.” But it was this story that truly hit home — and forever changed his career.

“I called my agent and said, ‘Listen, somehow we have to figure out how to get me in the room, because if they see me read this part, they’ll know I have an interesting take on it,” Hartley remembers. “I really get this guy and understand him.”

That “guy” is a struggling pretty-boy actor who moves from LA to New York to make something of himself, and hopes to be taken seriously in the process. There are natural similarities between Hartley and his character; they’re both chasing a dream. But in real life, Hartley is father to a 13-year-old daughter (pictured below), and considers himself more loyal and stable (he’s been dating fiancee Chrishell Stause since 2014), whereas Kevin “tends to spiral. … He walks through life and understands the misperception people have about him,” Hartley, 40, says. “They wrote this character so that on the surface, you could say he’s arrogant, out of touch, selfish, but by the end of the show, you realize there is so much more going on with this guy. He’s just drowning in his own insecurity. What a vulnerable, truthful character.”

Apparently, viewers agree. “This Is Us” premiered last fall, and became the first NBC in-season series to top all broadcast and cable shows in viewership in almost 13 years. The show was quickly picked up for two more seasons.

It’s a new kind of success for Hartley: Since graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a history and theater degree, he has landed parts in soaps like “Passions,” series like “Revenge” and “Mistresses,” and one-episode stints on shows like “CSI: NY” and “Melissa & Joey.” But despite his newfound stardom, the Illinois native — he was born in Knoxville and grew up in Orland Park — tries to stay humble. “You always hear about ‘Southern hospitality’ and that’s a real thing, and you hear ‘Midwest values’ and that’s a real thing as well,” he says. “[It’s about] being down to earth, staying grounded and not believing all of your own press when things are going well, which helps you out when things aren’t going so well.”

But when it comes to “This Is Us,” you can believe it’s as good as everyone says it is. It’s delightfully absent the salacious drama and high-tension thrill of many binge-worthy series, but it’s the kind of TV you can’t stop watching — and most definitely the kind for which a box of tissues is essential.

“When I go to the movies, I want to laugh and I want to cry,” says Hartley, who’s also cast in the upcoming Bad Moms sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas, in theaters Nov. 3. “I think we have a show that does that and does it in a truthful way. There are story lines on our show that hit home, that you can relate to no matter where you are or how old you are or how much money you make. And that’s where we win.”

So what’s next for Season 2? Viewers are hoping for insight on a major cliffhanger: We know Hartley’s on-screen father, Jack, dies, but how and when? And most importantly, when will we find out?

“This year,” the actor promises. “But there’s way more to the story that has to be told before you find out how it happened. The best stories still need to be told.” We’re sure that’s true of Hartley, too.
Personality test

Hartley riffs on his “This Is Us” co-stars:

Mandy Moore: “She has that motherly quality about her. She’s a very compassionate, very thoughtful person.”

Milo Ventimiglia: “I don’t mean this as an insult at all, because it’s not to say he doesn’t look this way, but I think people would be surprised to find out just how physically strong he is. He is like, tank strong — and I don’t think he works out a lot! He’s just genetically really strong.”

Chrissy Metz: “We laugh all the time. We laugh about every single thing you can possibly imagine. That’s all we do.”

Sterling K. Brown: “He’s got a real good gauge on when to be serious and when to be goofy. He can be goofier than all of us, hands down, but he can also be the most serious of all of us. He’s got a good [idea of] life and how to live it.”

- Por qué a Justin Hartley no le importa el ser acosado por el cómo muere Jack (Variety):
Por qué a Justin Hartley no le importa el ser acosado por el cómo muere Jack
Por Laura Bradley - 03 Oct, 2017 10:00 pm

“I’m trying to think if there's anything cool I can tell you,” Justin Hartley tells me Monday afternoon, as our interview winds to a close. “It would just blow everything!”

Truthfully, the This Is Us star, who plays Kevin Pearson on the series and will also appear in A Bad Moms Christmas next month, had already talked about many cool things—like working out with Sylvester Stallone and being on a group text with his co-stars, including Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, and Chrissy Metz. What he can’t discuss, though, are juicy spoilers—particularly, how his character’s father, Jack Pearson (Ventimiglia) dies, a central mystery and a detail the cast does know, but is barred from divulging to spoiler-hungry press. By his count, Hartley gets asked for spoilers roughly 30 to 40 times a day—but he doesn’t mind. “It’s when people stop caring, and people stop wondering,” he reasons, that one should worry. “Because it’s hard to get a job acting.”

“I get it, too,” he adds. “I would want to know as well. I’m glad that I know, but also, I’m horrible at keeping secrets, so it’s tough.”

The NBC weepy’s second season premiere garnered sky-high ratings and finished with a big reveal: it appears that Jack died as the result of a house fire. Meanwhile, a clueless, teenaged Kevin was with his girlfriend—and wearing a leg cast. Although Hartley plays coy about the story behind the cast, he will say that viewers are right to be curious about it: “It has a lot to do with his storyline this year. It has a lot to do with why Kevin behaves, sometimes, the way that he does. . . The broken leg is a turning point for Kevin in his life, and something that sort of sticks with him as he gets older. It's paved the way for him to do the things that he's doing.”

What’s Kevin doing this week? Returning to The Manny, the sitcom he quit last season, for a very special episode—which takes a humiliating turn when the Manny showrunner decides to force Kevin to crawl around on all fours in a diaper. (When asked his response to this plot twist, Hartley quips that the show’s writers “are way better writers than they are salesmen.”) Luckily, his ex-wife (and current girlfriend) Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) is there to support him—and ultimately, the incident helps Kevin prove he can be the bigger man. Meanwhile, Randall (Brown) starts “Randall-ing out” about the prospect of adoption; luckily, his wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) talks him down. And Kate (Metz)? She books her first singing gig—which their mother Rebecca (Moore) crashes, forcing a somewhat ugly confrontation.

The flashbacks, meanwhile, largely focus on Jack’s struggle to overcome his alcohol dependency. After more than a decade of keeping his addiction a secret from his kids, Jack realizes he has to let everyone in. Set against Kevin’s story—which has emphasized that the younger Pearson, too, is better at taking care of others than he is at taking care of himself—it presents an interesting interrogation of strength, vulnerability, and support.

Hartley says Kevin inherited that impulse from his father: “That’s what he knows.” He adds that Kevin lost his father too early to realize that Jack had support of his own: “When I was 12, I thought my dad did everything on his own, too,” Hartley says. “So if you lost your father at that age, and you didn't have the experience of growing older, and getting to know your old-man dad, you might just behave that way. There’s a sort of broken part of Kevin’s—not only his spirit, but the way he goes about handling things. It’s with great intentions, but he takes on too much.”

Of all the Pearson kids, Kevin often seems to be the one lost in the shuffle; in this week’s installment, most of his family bails on his show’s taping for one reason or another before he even takes the stage. Ironically enough, his tendency to get left by the wayside might, at least partially, be thanks to Kevin’s insistence on presenting an unshakeable front. As Hartley notes, people often assume Kevin is fine, even when “he’s really lonely.” Perhaps now, as he’s reconnecting with Sophie and maturing, Kevin will also be able to really cope with his father’s death—something Hartley thinks he hasn’t really done yet.

What’s coming up for Hartley’s character? As one might expect, he’ll continue—as everyone is—to try to move forward after Jack’s death, which will be explained by the end of the season. And then there’s the show’s big upcoming guest slot: Sylvester Stallone as himself. Hartley had actually met Stallone once before they filmed together; they had a quick conversation at the gym. (“How cool is this?” Hartley recalls thinking to himself. “I’m working out next to Rocky!”)

“He’s larger than life,” Hartley says of Stallone. “And then he puts you at ease and sort of levels everything out, and then you go to work, and then it’s just a couple actors doing their thing in a scene.” When Stallone wrapped a full day of filming, Hartley says, he also made sure to thank everyone, including the crew.

Once the show clears the mystery of Jack’s death, which has consumed so much of the conversation around it, it’s anyone’s guess what will come next. Hartley knows what happens through the end of the season, but it gets hazier in Season 3 (which This Is Us has already been renewed for). Here’s an ironic twist, though: the cast themselves almost leaked the news of Jack’s imminent death, before the show itself got a chance to in episode 5.

Originally, Randall revealed in the pilot that his adoptive father, Jack, was dead. The line got cut ahead of the show’s debut on NBC last fall—unbeknownst to the cast.

“And then the pilot airs, and we start tweeting and texting all kinds of stuff about Jack’s death,” Hartley said. “They had taken it out. So we get a letter from NBC like, ‘Don't talk about Jack’s death. Nobody knows he’s dead.’ And we're like, ‘Yes! He said it in the pilot!’ And they’re like, ‘No, we took that out.’ . . . I don’t know how nobody got in trouble for that, but what are you gonna do?”

- Justin Hartley sobre el por qué "This Is Us" es más que sólo una serie de TV (soaphub):
Justin Hartley sobre el por qué "This Is Us" es más que sólo una serie de TV
Por Michael Maloney - 09 Oct 2017

Justin Hartley, who stars as Kevin on This Is Us, had a premonition about the show’s impact after he shot the pilot for the NBC drama.

“I told Dan [Fogelman, creator/executive producer] that I think this show is going to change people’s lives,” Hartley tells Soap Hub.

The actor recalls the show’s creator acknowledging that the program was very good, but he wasn’t sure about it making the kind of impact that Hartley sensed it would.

As fans of the show know, This Is Us became not only an overnight sensation and a water cooler program — but it also became one that families watch and discuss together.

“I was right,” Hartley humbly says about his belief in the time-jumping drama. “It transcends a television show. [Fans] have told me, ‘My son’s off with his friends’ or ‘my teenager daughter’s off on another planet’ or ‘my husband’s working a lot and I have three jobs and we don’t have time, we don’t know each other, but we all sit down and watch this show.'”

The actor says that families who watch This Is Us will talk about the show and the emotional fallout from the storylines together. “That conversation evolves into them talking about their own families and their own lives. That’s more than a television show. That’s…everything.”

Hartley’s so insightful about the show and its impact, he says he doesn’t mind at all going on the talk show circuit to not just promote the hit series, but to celebrate its impact. “I’ll do all the talk shows,” he chuckles.

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m.

As you may have noticed, Jack is going through a hard time right now — and, unfortunately, based on what we know is coming, it’s going to get much worse. But he’s not the only Pearson on This Is Us who’ll be doing a fair amount of soul-searching in season 2. Kevin (Justin Hartley) — the absurdly handsome actor, the charmed dude who just seems to snap his fingers and make things happen — is about to undergo some serious self-questioning right as his career kicks into another gear.

The arc kicks off in Tuesday night’s episode of the NBC family dramedy, as we return to the set of the Ron Howard-directed war movie in which Kevin stars opposite Sylvester Stallone. As it turns out, the action-movie hero carried special status around the Pearson household. “Watching those movies was something that Kevin and Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) did with their dad (Milo Ventimiglia), and that’s one of the things that they looked forward to,” Hartley tells EW. “Rocky was Jack’s favorite movie, and Sylvester Stallone was Jack’s favorite actor. So to be there with him is like, ‘Wouldn’t it really be great to be like, ‘Holy sh–, Dad, come to work with me today! You’ll never believe who the f— I’m working with!’? And he’s not able to do that. So, instead of expressing that, Kevin does what he does and he suppresses everything. And then it comes to a head pretty quickly.”

We saw hints of Kevin’s inner turmoil dating back to the pilot when he had his existential meltdown with the two women at his place in private, and then a little later in the episode, he did it in public on the stage of his sitcom The Manny. (There were other indicators, such as his opening up to the widow at the memorial service that he crashed.) Now we’ll begin to peel back more layers that will reveal a fraught core. “Everyone’s like, ‘Everything comes so easy to Kevin,’ and Kevin’s heard that a few too many times,” says Hartley. “He’s starting to realize, ‘Things do come easy to me.’ He wants to be an actor, he’s an actor. He wants to get this girl, he gets this girl. And I think he’s starting to question his own legitimacy, like, ‘Why do things come so easy to me’ I’m not really special at anything. Things just happen and everything breaks my way.’ And diving into that — that’s a very scary thing when you don’t have the answers.”

In questioning his charmed place in the world, Kevin enters unstable territory. “It leads him down a dark path,” says Hartley. “One of the wonderful things about Kevin that I’ve always liked is he’s very self-aware. He gets it, but now instead of getting it and appreciating it, he’s getting it and questioning it, and he’s wondering, why does everyone think he’s so special when the truth of the matter is, at the end of the day, he hasn’t done anything extraordinary? That’s a dark and lonely place for a person to go… We get to see him fall apart a little bit, and go into a depression.”

His relationship with his ex-wife and current girlfriend Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge) also may face challenges, as he made a romantic stand for her toward the end of last season, assuring her that his heart was with her in New York. Then, of course, Howard came calling, and he jetted back to L.A., placing himself in danger of repeating the old patterns that severed their relationship years ago. “It’s obvious that these two love each other, and she’s an amazing woman and a strong woman, and she’s going to give him all of her support,” he says. “But that is a tough order to ask someone to jump right back into the thing that destroyed it to begin with. It’s nearly identical, and he’s basically saying to her, ‘I know it’s the same, I’m acknowledging that it is the same, I’m a different man,’ and he’s asking her to believe it. That is a lot to ask of someone. I truly do believe that Kevin is a better man and is more equipped and has the tools now to deal with things that are going to come his way. But it’s a totally different level, so who knows?”

Given that season 2 will explore the time period around Jack’s death, an air of gravitas looms larger than it did in season 1. Season 2 is “definitely darker, and it’s definitely heavier,” says Hartley. “But at the same time, the laughs are going to be a lot louder, too.”

And the volume knob on the relationship between the Big Three — past and present — with each other, as well as their parents, will be turned up as well as we approach D-Day. Which is why he feels that the long, slow build-up to the revelation about Jack’s demise was necessary. “You’re going to be so grateful that that portion of the story was told, once you find out, because the payoff is unbelievable,” he assures. “It’s well worth it. I’m privy to the fact that there are so many little pieces of the story that has yet to be told, and believe me, you want them all. You want all the little nuggets before you get to this final conclusion of how he died.”

Tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT, you just might collect another one

Justin Hartley sobre el trabajar con la estrella invitada de ‘This Is Us’ Sylvester Stallone y sus consejos de entrenamiento
Por Michael Fairman - 10 Oct 2017

On Tonight’s episode of This Is Us (9PMEST/8PMCST) none other than Sylvester Stallone will be part of the drama and playing himself, when Kevin, played by Justin Hartley (Ex-Adan Newman, Y&R) is set to work in a major feature film with the icon, and while doing so gets a set visit from his sister, Kate (Chrissy Metz).

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Hartley recently, where he shared his thoughts on the opportunity to work with the man that made “Rocky” and “Rambo” household names, and how he even gleaned some tips on how to have your physique camera-ready for shirtless scenes, and more from Sly!

Hartley relates it was a very cool surprise to have Stallone come onto the smash hit series: “We do these big huge massive ideas and things on This Is Us. Then you hear about it through the grapevine and think, ‘how are we going to pull that off?’ And then you hear the players they want to get for the story, and they say, ‘We are going to talk to this guy?’ I’m thinking, ‘I am not sure he does television!’ (Laughs) The show is that good though, that people want to be a part of it. If you can get Sylvester Stallone to be a part of it then you know you are doing something right. So much star power he brings to the show … it’s awesome.”

As to what transpires when the starstruck Kevin meets Mr. Stallone, and what type of film they are supposed to be working on, Justin revealed: “It’s a kind of like a war movie, period piece. It’s a big budget movie, and we got the main man to come to it, and so it doesn’t really get any better than that.”

Working in scenes with Sylvester Stallone on This Is Us, was actually not Hartley’s first encounter with the film star. Justin recalls, “I had actually met Sylvester Stallone, previously. We work out at the same gym, sometimes. One of the first questions I asked him, which was right before I filmed the movie, Bad Mom’s Christmas was because I had take my shirt off one, or two, or in ten of the scenes. (Laughs) I asked him, ‘What is a quick pump thing that you do right before scenes like that?’ I asked that because no one has done more than Sly has – maybe he and Arnold Schwarzenegger – those I would say are the two. So, Sylvester gave me some pointers on how to look good before your scenes. We talked about that, and we took some photos together. He’s fantastic. Sly is a guy who has been doing it for decades and decades, and doing it well, plus he has been writing, directing, painting, as well as acting. The guy does it all!”

Later, Justin would learn that Stallone actually thought he played for a major sports team when they first met! “We did not talk about the show,” expressed Hartley “I did not think he knew who I was at all, but I remember the day I came back to the gym. One of the trainers told me, ‘Sly was asking what football team you played for?’ He thought I was a wide receiver! I said, ‘That’s nice. I will take that!’ Being an A-list celebrity, I can clearly say that Sly is also an amazing human.”
