"The Incredible Hulk":

Ataca a Tess Mercer.

Estoy aquí si me necesitas”.

From Hodge and Kris: ¨¡Eran flashes y eran calientes!
Eran claramente Clark y Lois.

- Preguntas a Tom:

- Preguntas a Erica:

"¿Podemos esperar, quizá, a Wonder Woman?"

- Preguntas a Allison Mack:

- Preguntas a Justin:

Hartley on Green Arrow: "Está agobiado.

- Preguntas a Cassidy:

- Preguntas a Callum:

Lois estará locamente enamorada de Supermán — y todavía encuentra a and Clark irritante".

Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

This season, your episode count has been upped to 18 episodes. How do you feel this will improve the continuity of your character and will we no longer have months with no Lois?

Given that there's 18, then the time where Lois disappears is unlikely. So right now I've been really, really busy and working a lot, and am very much enjoying the arc that they've given me to play with this year, and I'm really looking forward to the rest.

Erica talks about Lois being able to take care of herself:

I start out in the first episode owning it. I'm basically running for my life. Some big hot chick comes to try to take me out, and I have to take care of myself because there's nobody else there. Or so I think, and then, of course, I'm saved, and that's great. That's what I love about her. She doesn't just sit back and wait for someone else to help her out; she just automatically, knee-jerk reaction says "I've got to take care of this myself, and I'm capable of it." And then she goes head-to-head with Tess Mercer a few times, as she does with most of the characters.

Will Lois try something like Stiletto again to try and capture Superman's attention?

She just doesn't give up. Not that she would force herself on someone, but she does have this absolute obsession with Superman, and what he represents, and just holds all of those things that are dear to her heart, and he's this amazing entity, and she will go after him. You do see times when she's totally frustrated because he stops calling her and she's waiting for him, and that sort of thing. Running parallel to that is that she still has her life. She still has her stories that she's going after. Of course, that's part of the faculty of Lois and what she represents, but on the other side of things I still want to keep it balanced and show the kind of modern day woman who could totally be in love
with someone, and still have her thing going on as well, and not be desperate or anything like that.

What is Lois's interaction with Oliver going to be like this season?

The part of the relationship with Oliver that I love is that it's the first mature relationship she's actually had, and she really did love him, and what you're going to see more of this season is that she's going back as a friend that loves him. I know that she's moved on, with her love for Superman, and I think what's interesting about this year for Lois is this magnet that keeps pulling her back to Clark Kent. She can't quite put her finger on what it is; maybe on some level, does she think they might be the same person? There is that constant chemistry and that constant attention. As for what she is with the relationship with Oliver, she sees that Oliver is kind of spiraling down, and she's saying hey, I love you as a friend, but he, I think, has come around to seeing how awesome she is, so there's a whole different kind of triangle going. What I love about it is it's not two girls fighting for one guy; it's two guys fighting for one girl. I think it's time for that.

Is Clark going to get in the way of Lois's love for Superman, and vice versa?

I think they're going to play with all sorts of different scenarios to keep it interesting and fun. The coolest thing is, of course Lois is on a conscious level totally unaware of that. She'll go on and kind of diss Clark to his face and talk about how great the Blur is, and then he gets to have that frustration, of "this is me, I can't tell her, but she thinks I'm an idiot, though I'm also that other side." And then I think there's still, like I said, that undercurrent of this magnet that keeps coming back to him.

Erica talks about inspiration from previous Lois Lane actresses:

The way I work is, I will totally appreciate what the other [Loises] do, but for me to research, I could never be Margot Kidder; I could never be Teri Hatcher, and I would fall into the trap of trying to be them instead of seeing it through my eyes. So if it makes sense, I try to see Lois as a brand new person, and even though she is a much beloved character, I try to look at it as this brand new girl, never been played before by anyone, and kind of go with it. Of course, I also have the luxury of having a really great creative team that would go "okay, but this is the way she is," so all of those points of the character were still there, but I was allowed to kind of reinvent it.

I had a chance to meet a few of the Loises. I met Noel Neill a few times; and I met Margot Kidder. I was at a convention and this lady comes from behind me and whispers in my ear, and she goes, 'You hit it out of the ball park,' and I looked, and it was Margot Kidder. So, for me that was one of the most incredible moments, and I look up to her, so if anyone were to come up to me and say that, I would want it to be Margot Kidder.

What do you want to see most for Lois this season?

I just want her to grow. I want her to become that journalist. I want her to embody that mythos. I want her to go after Superman. I want her to tear everything back, and grow, and become more of a well-rounded woman, and if she has to go undercover, I like doing all of that stuff. The cool thing with my character is I'm always doing something so different, and I just wait for the script to come to see "what am I doing now," and it's different every single time.

- Entrevista de Craig (K-site) a Allison Mack:
Comic-Con 2009: Allison Mack Interview
Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

Can you talk about Chloe's arc for this season and how things have changed since the season finale?

She is a woman scorned. The word that I keep using for Chloe is she's cauterized. I think that Chloe has hardened. Her intention and her direction and her deliberation is much stronger than it ever has been before, and I think she is much more committed to actualizing the things that she believes in, and she's doing it in a way that's different than Chloe's done it before, because she doesn't have Clark to stop her from doing the things she wants to do. She's a bit more potent this year than she ever has been before.

We hear there's going to be some happiness coming for Chloe. (See the interview with executive producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders, which will be posted here on KryptonSite shortly!)

Happiness for Chloe? I had no idea! That would be lovely. I would love to play some happy things. It's been a while since my character's had happiness on this show. So I would be very pleased. That would be great. I spent the last six episodes of the season last year crying and fighting and running, and the first three episodes of this year doing the same thing, so it would be nice to do some joyful things.

So you'll be directing more this year?

I'm directing another episode this season, which is very exciting.

Will you be doing anything differently to prepare this time?

I'm a little cockier this year, so I haven't gotten into my research yet for directing. I have a few directions that I have my eye on as far as shadowing is concerned, and I am always watching films and reading books, so I'll get down into it, probably a little closer to the time.

Erica used the term "Superman" when referring to Clark's alter ego when we interviewed her. Do you have any idea if the term will come into the show?

Calling him Superman? Right now he's the Blur, and I don't foresee that changing anytime soon, because right now, we're really just establishing that title for him. I don't think it's out of the question to think that we wouldn't eventually be calling him that.

Can you talk about portraying a character that's not in the comic lore?

It's so cool to know that the character that we've developed made enough of a name that people wanted to see her put into that mythos. I think that's an incredible compliment for both myself and the writers. It's an amazing thing, and I'm thrilled.

Will Chloe be returning to the Daily Planet anytime soon?

I hope so. I love that set. I want to film there more often, so I don't really know. I don't think she's a journalist anymore. She's really dedicated herself to being more of a behind the scenes kind of superhero techno girl. She's more potent in that way, but I think that she can't really keep herself away from the Daily Planet, because the woman that she loves the most in the world works there. So, she's there often.

What kind of scenes are you sharing with Dr. Hamilton (Alessandro Juliani)?

He's wonderful. A.J.'s great. It's amazing, actually. I have someone to share the technobabble with now. He speaks in a similar way that she does, so it's great. I don't have to carry the full weight of all of the technical jargon anymore. I can share a bit of the brunt of that with him. A lot of our scenes are kind of sidekick to sidekick. It's a funny dynamic, because neither of us know how to lead just yet. We're figuring that out.

As the season begins, does Chloe try to look into where Lois has disappeared to?

Absolutely. Chloe's made it her life's work to find Clark and Lois, as well as the Justice League. She's the only one that stayed true to Metropolis and held down the fort while everyone sort of fell apart, so she's trying to fit the pieces back together.

If you could take Chloe in any direction this season, what would you want for her the most?

I want to do something different. I want to see her go for what she wants in a way that she never has before, and step into her own in a way that she never has before. I think that Clark and Chloe have different ideas with respect to how to get jobs done, and now that Clark is not working so closely with Chloe, I want to see Chloe step into a direction with respect to getting the job done that she's never done before. I think that we're going to see her much more intense, much more ruthless, and much stronger this year.

If Chloe and Clark might not be interacting as much this year, does that mean there's less chance for a romantic future between them?

Unfortunately, I believe that's the truth. They're both committing themselves a little bit more to getting the job done this year, although Clark is always distracted.

How does that make you feel?

I think she moved on from Clark a while ago. I think that when she married Jimmy, she was really honest about her love for Jimmy, and I think that Chloe has taken Clark in as a family member moreso than a lover, and I think that happened several seasons ago. So while I'm unhappy that I don't get to play a love story with Tom Welling, as any actress would, I am pleased that I don't have to be the sad puppy dog anymore.

What happened to Chloe's dad?

Chloe's dad disappeared. Chloe's dad is not around. Chloe and Clark are pretty much orphans, and I think that sort of made their relationship stronger.

Who have you shared scenes with thus far this season?

I'm working a lot with A.J. (Alessandro Juliani) who plays Dr. Hamilton. I am working with Tom right now, just wrapping up a lot of the stuff that they left open-ended last season, and I'll be working more and more with the Justice League, as I find them and put the pieces together.

Will we see Chloe's reaction to Clark's new outfit?

[Laughs] She has some opinions that she shares, in her way.

They're promoting this season as Clark's "darkest hour." Will there be any light in this season?

Absolutely. You can't have Erica Durance, Justin Hartley, and Tom Welling in a show together without it being funny. It's definitely darker, but with darker storylines, comes darker humor, so it's good.

Can you talk about Sam Witwer and Aaron Ashmore, who have now left the series?

I think Sam brought a depth and a darkness to the show that we really needed, and I can't say enough good things about Aaron Ashmore. I think that he's an amazing individual; a wonderful actor, and he's so sorely missed on our show. I wish them both the best.
- Entrevista de Craig (K-Site) a Callum Blue:
Comic-Con 2009: Callum Blue Interview
Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

What was your reaction upon finding out that the "Mason" character was actually Zod?

I was thrilled to bits. I remember Terence Stamp's portrayal of him in the movies, and he terrified me as a kid. So to play such an iconic character is both a good thing and a bad thing. I've got a lot of plans for him. I'm going to play it to the fullest. I was chuffed.

Will the Zod character be interacting with the other Kryptonians that are being introduced into the show?

I have come to Earth with a whole army of Kryptonians, so I've been interacting with those. They're my army; it's like a fascist party, and I'm their leader. They don't have their powers that they were born with, so he's got to work that out first. He's not even aware of Clark at the moment. What he is aware of is that Jor-El survived, and they were friends. That's what he is aware of.

How many episodes are you signed to appear in?

I think about 16 out of 22. I'll be a series regular, and they've got some plans for me. I'm going to shake things up a bit.

Had Smallville been a series you had been watching in the past?

I hadn't been watching it, no. I have been now, and I'm falling in love with it. I think it's a brilliant show. They sent me a couple of episodes and I'm really getting into it.

Can you talk about your character's interaction with Tess?

She's the one that summoned the Kryptonians. I think she doesn't know what she's gotten herself into. She doesn't know how powerful this character is. She's kind of playing him and he's playing her, but he's one step ahead of her all the time. He's really smart. There's some sexual chemistry going on also, even though Zod does not like humans at all, there's something about her that interests him.

So Zod has the upper hand?

Oh, yeah. He's one step ahead of everybody. He has to be.

Which series regulars have you worked with thus far?

Just Tess at the moment. He's laying low at the moment. He's slowly being introduced into what this Earth is all about. He's finding his feet and he's just slowly getting into his own.

He knows what he wants to do.

He knows what he wants to do. He wants everybody to kneel before him. He wants to take over the planet. How he does that, he has no idea yet. I want to make him more a manic character than Terence Stamp was. He's a younger version of him, so he hasn't really grown into his tyranny yet. They're going to explore his history and Jor-El and his time on Krypton. This is where it gets confusing: This is a past version of Zod. He's the younger version. He hasn't blown up Krypton yet. He's not in the Phantom Zone. So all of that is to come, so they can play with a bit of - are they going to change the future? If you had a chance to kill Hitler, would you? That kind of thing.

Could Zod have a good side?

I don't want him to. If he pretends to have a good side, there's a reason. He's definitely a manipulator.

- Entrevista de Craig (K-Site) a los productores Brian Peterson y Kelly Souders:
Comic-Con 2009: Interview With Smallville Executive Producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders
Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

What can the fans look forward to the most in Season 9?

BP: The Lois/Clark/Blur love triangle, and the training that Clark is going to start toward being Superman. No spandex but we're definitely one step closer.

There has been some concern from fans of the Chloe character that she is very rarely offered happy moments anymore. Will she see any happiness this year?

BP: Oh yes.

KS: Yeah. This season, Chloe has a real goal and she's really dedicated toward that goal. For her it's a season of a lot of self-satisfaction, and we'll see the Chloe that was at the Torch with the computers, and where that has taken her over these years, and how incredibly powerful she becomes.

BP: It's her maturation into the DC Universe.

Was her evolution into "Watchtower" something that was always in the plan for her character?

BP: We keep going back to the pilot for the seeds of where we go. We always go back to the roots. I don't know that it's where they envisioned, but it seems a natural progression of who she is.

How do you balance the physically strong males with the mentally strong females on the show?

KS: I think in the writer's room we don't look at it quite that way. I think the women on the show have their moments where they really kick ass and we love that, but I think that it's very fun to write for these very driven women, who can handle people dying left and right, with monsters coming after them, and they just get back up. I think the guys on the show are developing emotionally to balance out their physical strength.

How long will it be before we see some more characters from the DC Universe, beyond Metallo and Major Zod?

BP: In Episode 4, you see the return of a DC villain. Episode 5 has two that we can't announce right now because they're not cast yet. Episode 6 has Roulette from the DC Universe. We're bringing in a bunch.

Are you concerned with the break-up of the Thursday Smallville/Supernatural block?

KS: It wasn't our decision, but you know what? We're actually really excited about it. We loved our block with Supernatural. Eric Kripke and the whole gang over there are fantastic, and we're actually in the same building. But our move to Friday - I think it's a challenge, and everybody's up for it and excited. Friday used to be a night that a lot of people thought was a show being put out to pasture, but Dollhouse is on Friday nights, as is Ghost Whisperer. It's not the same as it used to be, and [hopefully] we can launch a Friday night for The CW.

Now that Tom Welling is a producer for the show, will he ever be writing for the series?

KS: I don't know when he has time to breathe, to be honest.

BP: His joining is really organic. He's helped shape his character from the very start, and the last couple of years he's gotten a lot more involved with directing. So there's not a huge shift; he's just getting the credit that he's actually earned in the last couple of years.

KS: He's a really great link between the writing staff, the producers, and the set, and he's been keeping an eye on things also, since he's had so much experience directing. He's really a valuable source, along with being the lead of the show.

Are there any guest stars that you're looking forward to seeing?

KS: Brian Austin Green. We've been watching all of his dailies coming in, and I think fans are going to be very thrilled with them. He makes an amazing Metallo.

BP: And Callum [Blue] as Zod, although we have him for most of the season. Just in the dailies we've seen already, he's fantastic. We really see how he becomes Terence Stamp.

KS: And he brings a lot of depth. Smallville is really interested in the origin stories of characters, so to explore why he's going to become a villain, nurture vs. nature and all of those aspects... it's a lot of fun to watch.

Is there any chance Kristin Kreuk will be returning as Lana?

BP: We love Kristin. I would never say never, but it is not in the plan right now.

Will we see Martha Kent?

KS: We talk about her all the time, because Annette's just fantastic, and brought so much to the show. It's always just about timing and what's going on with the characters.

BP: And with both Kristin and Annette, we really try to bring characters into the show that are integral into Clark's development. They both played massive roles in his high school; but their role in his trajectory is kind of over at this point. We've love to bring them in, but I think he's got new lessons that he's learning.

KS: It's kind of lining up more with the comics.

What inspired you to put Clark in a costume of some sort this season?

BP: It came out of the character and the story that we had in the finale. For the first time really, there was a big question about whether Clark did the right thing or not, and that has propelled him in one direction, and giving up being Clark Kent, just embracing being a hero so he doesn't get emotinonally attached; and Oliver Queen has been propelled in the opposite direction. They're both making opposite choices.

Was this done because of the viewers who complained that he wasn't yet in costume?

KS: Well, obviously the fans are our #1 concern, always. Like Brian said, we go back to the pilot constantly. It's really our mantra, and the pilot is really about how does he get from being this freshman dorky kid in high school to becoming the world's greatest superhero. It's really about that journey. That moment has been covered many times very successfully, so we're really just trying to fill in and give a three dimensionality to that arc before he puts on the tights and he's fully embraced who he is.

Can you talk about Erica Durance having more episodes this season?

BP: We had all intentions last year, and it just didn't end up happening, and we're excited this year, because she plays a little more pivotal role in the show.

KS: One thing that's different about her character this season is that Lois actually is part of the mythology. She plays an interesting role, which sends Clark and Lois on this trajectory where they just have to crash into each other in order for him to be who he needs to be by the end of the season. We're excited about that.

What does he need to do by the end of the season?

BP: You will have tiny flashes in the premiere. Lois will start having visions as to what the future holds after she comes back with the Legion ring, and [she sees] what the world will be if Clark doesn't fix things.

Is Clark going to deal with more of his responsibilities?

KS: I think it's part of his training. We're going to bring Jor-El and the Fortress back. Last year was all about becoming human and having these two identities, but "how do I create a human disguise?" This season, it's much more about embracing the fact that he is an alien, that he was sent here for a reason, and he is supposed to save the world. He has that much greater destiny, and for the first time he's really whole-heartedly embraced that side of him.

BP: We've pitched that this year is Clark's darkest hour as he's struggling with that, but the show is not really going to be dark. We have a lot of fun with Lois and Clark in the Daily Planet. We have a couple of really fun episodes coming up. We're not plunging through darkness; just that he has a deep, dark decision that he has to make with balancing his Kryptonian side.

- Entrevista de Craig (K-Site) a Cassidy Freeman:
Comic-Con 2009: Cassidy Freeman Interview
Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

Can you talk about Tess's interaction with Zod in Season Nine?

Our interaction is quick to be shown. Episode One, the two of us are together, and it's been really fun getting to work with him, because Callum is the new kid, and I got to rub it in his face, that this year I wasn't the new kid anymore. But I've unleashed him. I've followed all of the orb's orders, and I've unleashed him, and I don't know yet whether I've done a really good thing or a really, really bad thing. It's leaning towards really, really bad. So, when we interact, we both hold our cards close and we're both very protective of our motives and what we're going to do next, and it's a nice back and forth between us.

After what happened in the season finale, is Tess going to re-hire Lois at the Daily Planet?

Who knows? It was kind of a rough one, wasn't it? There's actually a scene around whether or not she's going to be re-hired at the Daily Planet, and I may or may not be wielding a bo staff in said scene. I don't think that it would be the Planet with her. I'm not saying that I would voice re-hiring her, because I'm still kind of upset by that Tomahawk kick off the desk. She hit me across the face with a wooden box holding a Legion ring! But of course she's going to be at the Planet.

Can you talk about any more Tess vs. Lois fights that we may have coming up?

Erica and I joke about the fact that women on this show can't be friends, and we don't really understand why. Because women are friends, and Erica and I are friends. She is such a dear. But we've only had one scene this season so far. I think that with Erica, Justin, and I all getting upped in episodes this year, there are a lot more people to be juggling. I don't know how the writers do it. They must have a white board the size of Texas that they throw ideas at.

How many episodes have you been increased to?

This year, I think 17.

What are Tess's goals for the new season?

Her end goal, she wants Superman to be Superman. Her end goal is the end goal of every fan out there. She speaks to the masses. She's just willing to kill people to get there, which is a bit different, I hope, from the masses. A little bit. All of you out there, don't kill people. She wants him to come out because she wants him to save the world. But now, she's kind of screwed herself, because she listened to this orb. Why would you listen to an orb? Another piece of advice: If there's an orb talking to you, don't listen to it!

Is it tough to play Tess's moral ambiguity?

It's awesome, and it's actually a lot easier to play the ambiguity than it is to play dead-on, one emotion. It's not really believable when someone is just evil all the time. It's much more believable when you go back and forth, because it's human. It's how we all are. We all have good thoughts and bad thoughts, and we act on both at some times. They might not have the same stakes that Smallville has, but we also don't live in Metropolis, so I would rather play the ambiguity. It makes it more human for her.

Is Tess aware of what Clark has been doing around the city in a costume?

She's not really too concerned with Clark right at the beginning of the season. She's really trying to cover her own ass. She's really kind of screwed the pooch on this one. But I think she knows what's going on.

Have they hinted to you at all if Tess might be meeting Lex at any point this season?

They have not hinted such things to me. I don't know where Lex is. Lex is gone. Lex is dead, but not dead. Lex is in the vortex.

So her obsession with him is over?

Yeah. He still played a huge role in her life, but I think in the middle of last season when he betrayed her, she cut all feeling of having to be there for him, or having to do anything for him. He burned that bridge. She is so over it.

Some of your other actors are directing this season. Have you considered pursuing directing?

Directing? It's a lot of work, and I know that. I know that because at the end of last year, we all came in and tried to help out, because we had to shoot that season finale really quickly. I was trying to sit there and think "if I had to do this, what would I do?" It's a lot of work, and I don't think that I have enough experience to do that yet, but I think it would be really fun. I think you have to do it to know whether or not you'd like it, as well.

How are Tom and Allison different as directors?

They're very different, actually. Allison speaks very much to a woman, because she is a woman, but she's also much more about the emotion of things in your story and your personal journey. Whereas Tom leaves that up to each actor individually, but as an overall, he has a really great idea of everything that's going on, and he's so calm when he directs. My favorite thing that he does is at the end of each shot, he'll tell the actors to take a take just for them, and just go for it.

Is there anyone that you don't work with as much this upcoming season that you would like to work with more?

I haven't worked with Tom yet. I don't even know when we're going to meet up again. Tess and Clark have not seen each other yet this season so far. And I don't work with the ladies very much, either. I work with a lot of assistants; my "minions."

Will there be any more power struggling between Tess and Oliver this season?

Absolutely. As there said on the panel, Oliver kind of takes a back seat in the beginning. He's on this road to "I suck and my life means nothing." But there will absolutely be tension, because we still have a company together.

What is your favorite part of playing Tess?

It's not the shoes. I'll tell you that right now. My favorite part is not the shoes. My favorite part of playing Tess - I love when she gets to laugh. I really like that. It doesn't happen very often, and it's never in the full joyous laughter kind of way, but it's almost a conniving way.

SMALLVILLE Season 9 News - Showrunners Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson Interview Comic-Con 2009
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted:July 26th, 2009 at 8:45 pm

I was just reading on Twitter, because none of us could get into the panel, that there are some very big changes coming to Smallville this upcoming season, with its move to Friday night. For example, maybe someone will be wearing a costume of some kind.

Kelly Souders: There’s a little bit of a wardrobe change this season, that’s fair to say, yes.

Brian Peterson: We’re trying to explore, maybe the last stage this next couple of years. What Clark Kent goes through in his decision to put on the cape and tights. It’s kind of based on a couple of pieces of mythology from when he died, and his Doomsday fight in the comics, and the costume he wore after that, and that’s kind of the basis of what we’re doing with his look this year.

Someone tweeted that, I want to say, the Eradicator, I think that’s what they were saying?

Kelly: Well, Twitter never lies!

I’m just repeating what someone wrote. Is there any truth to this Eradicator thing?

Brian: I’m not familiar with the Eradicator, I don’t think either of us are, I’m sorry. So that would probably be a no, but I’m not familiar with what they may have taken that from…

Eradicator was a Kryptonian character who kind of jumpstarted him back to life.

Brian: That’s not what we’re, no.

Kelly: Thanks for the idea, Twitter.

So what are you going to be doing now that you have another season?

Kelly: We had an amazing last year, literally we had what we called the ‘next season stories’ a list of ‘Oh, that’s a great idea, it doesn’t fit with our characters right now, but that’s a great episode for next year,’ so we literally came into this season with like a hundred ideas already, and just since we’ve been going, we’ve been getting more and more, so the list just keeps growing. So strangely, you’d think in a season nine and looking at a season ten, you’d be going ‘Oh my gosh, what the hell are we going to talk about this year?’ but it’s not felt like that at all. It’s felt like a pilot season.

Brian: And the thrust of the year is twofold. One is Clark training with Jor-El and for the first time really embracing what that means to be a hero, trying to give up his human identity but finding how hard that is when you’re in love with somebody. So that’s kind of the thread, between Lois and Clark and the Blur, and his training with Jor-El, that’s kind of the thread.

Is this the last season?

Brian: We’re not breaking it down as the last season.

Kelly: We’re not, because I think, last year, most people thought, ‘That’s it,’ and then the fans were so amazing and embraced what we were trying to do.

So you’re not worried about the network pulling the plug?

Kelly: I don’t think so because the network, the WB and Warner Bros., and they want the show to satisfy fans. They know it’s not a show that you can get to episode 21 and you can decide, ‘Oh let’s just end it next episode and it’ll work,’ they know that. They’ve been really great.

I’m curious about contracts, though. With Tom Welling and other cast members, are people signed on if there were to be another season, or are there season-to-season contracts?

Brian: We pretty much are covered.

Kelly: I think we’re covered, and anything we’re not covered, we’re talking to people because the cast is so great, so we want everyone to stay involved until the end. So we’re working on that.

How does Zod fit into this?

Brian: But we’re bringing him in as Major Zod, and we have a whole back-story that’s going to unfold as to why he’s here. He comes with pretty much a legion of Kryptonians from Kandor, and so it dovetails and touches on what they’re doing in the comic world right now. But we’re making it fit with our world.

How does the move to Friday night affect your budget for the show?

Kelly: You know what, it didn’t affect our budget at all. And I think that’s one of the things that made us feel… excited about the possibility of a season ten. Because they didn’t, they really want us to launch a Friday night. We’re excited to do it, we know our fans are the best fans, they follow us to pretty much any night, we’ve been pretty much on every night, and they keep showing up.

Brian: We’ve moved Tuesday to Wednesday, Wednesday to Thursday, Thursday to Friday, and we’re still here.

The history of Friday night is pretty much a minefield. If you guys survive a Friday night move, I’d like to think that the network would be excited.

Kelly: The thing is, it used to be kind of the death move, but now Dollhouse is on Friday night, and Ghost Whisperer… It’s kind of a night where people are tuning in to watch television.

Brian: And historically, you’ve got the X-Files, one of the biggest sci-fi hits, was a Friday night lynchpin, Battlestar was a Friday, so I think… I don’t think we’re actually very worried about it.

Kelly: No.

Any chance of Lex Luthor this season?

Kelly: You know, we love Rosenbaum. We had dinner with him a couple of weeks ago. We would over the moon to have time work out for his schedule, have him back and visit the show and nothing, I think, would make the cast happier, too. But right now, there’s nothing that’s panning out, but we’re always looking at it.

The show’s mantra has always been ‘No tights, no flights’. Now that we’re seeing a costume, will we see Clark flying?

Brian: We actually deal with that in the premiere… Why he doesn’t fly, and why he’s wearing the costume he has right now.

Kelly: It’s a different side of Superman. It’s very exciting. The film, the footage that’s coming in, it looks like a motion film.

Will we see him flying?

Brian: I don’t think we’ll see him flying until he embraces bring Superman, that’s what Al and Miles started with, and what we’re trying to carry that. And that will be the final stage - him deciding who he wants to be.

Kelly: And the show is really the journey to that moment.

Are there any other taboos for the show?

Brian: Not really. It’s not really a taboo, but a licensing issue: Batman and Wonder Woman.

Where are you as far as the writing process? Where have you written up to already?

Kelly: We are breaking…

Brian: …eight and nine.

Kelly: Eight and nine. So the energy this year of the show…we’re way ahead this year and it’s been fantastic.

So let’s talk about November sweeps. What do you guys have planned?

Brian: It’ll be great. Lois is having visions of the future, and in sweeps you’ll get to see what that day in the future is.

What other DC characters are we going to see?

Brian: Metallo and Roulette, we’re going to bring in Roulette, we have two that we can’t announce yet. We’re casting now.

What about Geoff Johns and JSA?

Brian: Yes, Geoff Johns is writing Justice Society of America for one of our episodes.

Erica Durance (Lois Lane) Comic-Con Interview SMALLVILLE
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted:August 3rd, 2009 at 11:28 am

We heard the Comic-Con reaction went very well.

Erica: It did. I think there were like 6,000 people in there, which was shocking to me. It always is. When you’re out there in Vancouver doing your thing, and then you come down and you see how positive people are–people who are so jazzed and so supportive of all of us…It was really nice to be able to have the whole cast down. And I think that was part of the appeal. And then of course they freaked out when Tom came out, which was hilarious.

He hasn’t done many appearances down here in a while.

Erica: As far as I know…But I don’t know, I haven’t seen all the appearances he does, but I think this was a big deal.

It’s rare for a show to make it to a ninth season. Were you surprised when you got the ninth season pick up, or did you feel you were definitely getting another season?

Erica: I never think, “Oh, I’m getting another season.” I kind of make the best of it, where you’re at and what you’re doing, because this business is so fickle and transient. And I’m just thankful to all the fans that watch it and keep it on the air. And I think that it’s helpful because it started out with him young and all the characters young, and growing into it. So they can have a longer existence, and kind of change, bring in new characters, and have it grow towards more of the mythos, which I think that people will see a lot more in this season, and get a bit of their payoff for all their patience.

Where is the Lois and Clark relationship going this season?

Erica: You know, they give me little hints. I think that you’re going to see a lot more of that triangle. She’s so smitten with the Red-Blue Blur, and yet is undeniably drawn to Clark. And I think over the season, they’ll be able to see how much they depend on each other on so many levels. And I think there’s still that fun, there’s still the comedy side of it, the banter and that sort of thing, but also kind of just trying to figure out how they feel about each other.

Is there still something between Lois and Oliver?

Erica: No. She’s done with Oliver! She’s found the real deal. No, the thing is, the beauty about the relationship with Oliver that I liked is that it was one of the first times you see Lois in something that’s mature, and where she really opens up and is really vulnerable with someone. And so I don’t think you ever forget that first love, and I think that she loves him as a friend, and she sees him in a downward spiral, so there’s a lot of that interaction. I’ve heard that he starts to regret his decision to get rid of Lois. Which I say, “Ha ha!” So now I have, in this season, more of a triangle of two guys kind of vying for her attention, which is a nice treat for Smallville. Usually, it’s all the women salivating over Clark. So it’s kind of fun. It’s fun. I go onto set, “Start to be smitten, boys! Let’s go, it’s your turn!”

Do you ever alter lines to help make the character your own?

Erica: You know, as an actor, I try to find the challenge of…There’s a couple of challenges. First, I’ll read it, and I’ll know instinctually if there’s something she doesn’t do. And then they’ve been really, really helpful. But they’re so good that it doesn’t really stray that much. If it’s a little off, then we talk about it, and then I kind of go, “Is it Erica, or is it Lois? Who’s not comfortable with this?” And then I have to be really honest about it and go, “You know what? She’s human. Maybe she would do that.” So there’s a lot of give and take in that. But definitely, I’ll be able to tell right away when I read something if it doesn’t feel right.

Are you excited or apprehensive when you read a script and find out you have an action scene?

Erica: Depending on if I had just done a lot of action, then I’m like…But I love it. That’s what I enjoy about playing that character. You know, one week, I’m doing two days’ worth of fighting and I’m walking around with bruises, and the next one, I’m in some romantic scene. It’s all over the place, and I love that about her.

How do you feel about the Stiletto costume from last season?

Erica: Oh my gosh, what a riot! You know, I looked at it originally, and some people really hated it…And I just said the thing about Lois is she’ll try anything. Like she will do stuff. She’ll try. But she’ll also be the first one to say, “I was wrong, let me make it right.” And that’s what she did in that episode. She risked her life. She jumped in to save her friends, and she’s like, “I’m sorry.” And I think that’s what makes her human. I think the suit was hilarious because I couldn’t sit down. So they had to build me like a thing to…

Would you like to see the return of Stiletto at some point?

Erica: No, I wouldn’t! [laughs] I couldn’t breathe, eat, or sit. But it was a fun one, for sure.

LIVE AT THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON: "SMALLVILLE"
By Brian Ford Sullivan

Justin Hartley on if we'll see the redemption of Ollie this season: "I hope so because right now he's doing a lot of downward spiraling. So hopefully there's some payoff, like a redemption or something, yeah. I think that's where they're going. What I was kind of hoping is this last year they did that with him and these things that keep coming up with him are lingering, right? And so they went there last year but then I didn't do too much work on the show, I wasn't on the show that much, they had to kind of leap out of it quickly. So I kind of want him to go down there and like marinate a little bit. And then that way when he comes out of it, he actually has time to be there and see what's going on and go oh, this is not where I want to be. And the reward will be a lot better I think."

Justin Hartley on what Ollie's relationship will be with Clark this season: "I think what makes them friends and respect each other is the very same thing that makes them butt heads. Because they both want the same thing, it's just the process of how is completely different. And we all have people like that in our lives too, right? So you know that, well, he has good intentions but why does he have to be so aggressive? And the other guy's going, yeah, he's got good intentions but why doesn't he just go do it, why does he have to be so soft all the time? So it's one of those things, you know? I think also just the fact that Clark has all these abilities that Oliver couldn't even imagine having and that he's not using them. Not only not using them, but not using them it the way that Oliver would use them. So they both see things one way. So I think they probably won't be best friends maybe ever, you know what I mean? But they'll always have that respect for each other."

Justin Hartley on what's ahead in season nine: "[Clark] comes into town and he's saving everybody. And when he's doing it he's leaving these symbols, making sure everybody knows who saved who. And I think that rubs Oliver the wrong way, like, why can't you just go save somebody? Why do you have to do your job and leave your business card? Why can't you just [do it] anonymously? He'll never admit it, but I think there's a huge jealousy thing with him as well. It's you got to show everybody who you are all the time? You can't just go do stuff and move on? But at the same time Oliver's not doing anything. He's got too many things going on, he's got too much on his plate personally to be able to [do] anything that has to do with the Green Arrow. I think it's almost a relief for him when he's able to have any sort of excuse to hang it out, you know? I think he looks at all the things that being the Green Arrow has done to his life and personally it's not good for him anymore, you know? I think he's seeing it that way. So hopefully he'll change."

Erica Durance on her status this season: "This year because I'm doing 18 [episodes] now - yay, I'm so excited about that! - I'm going to be more a part of the actual main A story arc. And so Lois comes back from the future and she starts getting flashes and she thinks she has amnesia, she thinks something's wrong with her. So I know that they're going to develop all sorts of scenarios for her to try and piece all of those things together like a big puzzle to figure out what's going on. And then maybe kind of be the lynchpin key answer to some of Clark's questions which is [a] different kind of place for her to be. And then of course going into the actual mythos of it and her slow, kind of infatuation with the Blur and this undeniable kind of chemistry that she has with Clark Kent. And trying to figure out the balance between that. I always like to think on some level a woman always knows."

Erica Durance on if Lois will be back at the Daily Planet this year: "Nobody fires Lois. Her main thing is the Daily Planet, it is being this journalist. That side of her, that career driven side of her it fulfills her in some many ways. She for sure finds her way back there and will be investigating things and getting into trouble and getting rescued. She wouldn't be Lois Lane if she wouldn't, it keeps life interesting."

Erica Durance on if she'd stick around for a 10th season: "Oh yeah, it's my first love. It's my first job and, you know, I'd like to see it through to the end."

Allison Mack on what's on tap for Chloe this year: "I get a name! I get a like proper alias [Watchtower], it's the coolest! I'm so excited about that. I think it's a real honor to be invited into the DC family in the way that I've been invited in. I think it says a lot about our writers that they'd create a character that is so long-lasting and has been able to be incorporated into the DC comic legend in the way that I have. I'm just really excited about it. I'm excited about having a storyline that's very much about the direction that Chloe wants to go in, not so much about Clark Kent. I mean it's always about Clark but not so obviously about Clark. [Laughs.]"

Allison Mack on Chloe's romantic life going forward: "I think she's focused on what she's trying to do in the world and less involved with sort of what she wants to do personally. I think that Chloe has decided to callus herself in a way that she hasn't before so that she can get the job done that she needs to get done which is rescue humanity from themselves. So I think love interests are not the first priority for her at this point in her career."

Allison Mack on directing an episode of the show again: "I don't know what number it is but I know that it's the end of January so it's pretty far into the future."

Allison Mack on if Clark and Chloe will ever get together: "I think it wouldn't work. I think that the relationship dynamic that they have right now is so beautiful that I would not want that to get screwed up. They're not right for each other."

Callum Blue on playing Zod: "We want to do a different take on him anyway but basically I'm going to rip Terence Stamp off.... People say that we've got similar voices, yeah, and we've actually got the same manager as well so I had a little message from him wishing me luck."

Callum Blue on what sets this version of Zod apart: "First of all, he's Major Zod at the moment. He hasn't actually grown into General Zod, so he's a younger version. What I want to do is make him a big more manic. The Terence Stamp version is very cool, calm and collected, there's a level there. There's definitely a certain amount of that with me but I think he hasn't grown into that yet. In my take, he has to calm down a bit because he wants it right now... he's very aristocratic but he hasn't really calmed down into it yet, you know what I mean? I think that's definitely a journey for me to take with that character."

Callum Blue on how we meet Zod: "He's got kind of like this fascist party, he's the leader of it. I've been watching a lot of Hitler speeches because he's very charismatic, I want [Zod] to be very charismatic... He has a fascist army, the interesting thing is that they turn against him in the first couple of episodes, he has to work to get them back on his side. He has to manipulate and kill a couple of people for that to happen. So he's not as confident as the character is going to be in the future."

Callum Blue on Zod's relationship with Clark: "First of all I'm not aware of Clark's existence yet. I am aware, I've just discovered that Jor-El has survived and we're exploring our history, we're exploring Jor-El's and Zod's history. And I think they were friends and there was something that went down. So I don't know about Clark yet. I don't know how I'm going to react to the fact that he exists."

Callum Blue on reconciling his Zod with the character's previous appearances on the show: "Here's where it gets confusing. That was the future Zod, I haven't yet blown up Krypton. That's to happen so it's in the past. I come from the past so I'm the younger version of Zod, none of that has happened yet... All I know at the moment is that Zod is here, he doesn't know why he's here, he hasn't got his powers yet and he's confused about that, his army turns against him and he's just laying low at the moment, working everything out in his mind."

Brian Peterson on if the much-ballyhooed kiss between Clark and Lois shown during the panel is going to be real or a dream: "It is one reality that we explore on the show."

Brian Peterson on the theme for season nine: "We're pitching it as his darkest hour, and there are a lot of dark decisions he has to make, [but the hook] of the year is his burgeoning love for Lois Lane and the fun love triangle between that everybody knows from Clark loves Lois, Lois loves Superman, although he's obviously not Superman yet but he's getting there."

Brian Peterson on bringing in Zod: "Zod is really going to bring a new dynamic to the show because we're introducing him as Major Zod, before he ever turns into General Zod. And so we get to his trajectory into becoming the villain that he becomes... We've never had a Kryptonian living on Earth with Clark for an entire season and how that affects Clark's journey."

Kelly Souders on if we'll see Jor-El in the flesh this season: "You might have to just tune in for that one." Brian adds: "[Regardless] we do have Terence Stamp back as the voice of Jor-El, that's fantastic. And you'll learn pretty quickly - episode two - what happens."

Kelly Souders on Clark wearing a costume this year: "Well, for us this is a step closer. I think that that he isn't a guy right now who's probably going to put the tights and boots [on] and get, you know, something like made. He hasn't quite gone as far as Green Arrow or Black Canary. I think he's still on his path to becoming that man. But he's definitely recognizing that this second identity, as much as he knows right now what Clark Kent looks like, he needs to kind of figure out what the Superman part of him looks like. Even though it's not quite the costume everybody's used to seeing, it's one step closer."

Siempre estoy leyendo libros y viendo películas.

¿Llamarlo Superman? Ahora mismo él es The Red Blue Blur.

Me gustaría hacer algo distinto.

He trabajado mucho con Alessandro Juliani (Dr. Hamilton).

¿A cuántos episodios aparecerás?

Comic-Con 2009: Interview With Smallville Executive Producers Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders
Interview By Craig Byrne - KryptonSite Webmaster

Following the Smallville panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, several cast members and producers from the show participated in roundtable interviews with various outlets including KryptonSite. Here, we speak with Executive Producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders about what to expect from the new season.

Questions are in bold and answers are not. "BP" listed below is Brian Peterson; "KS" is Kelly Souders. Please do not reproduce this interview onto other forums without a link to KryptonSite.com, and please only use snippets with a link rather than re-posting the whole thing. Thanks!

What inspired you to put Clark in a costume
of some sort this season?
