- Rumor: ¿Posible crossover entre "Supergirl" y "The Flash"?:

For all intents and purposes, Supergirl’s James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) is a superhero. He may not be able to fly. He may not have superhuman strength. But he sure does have a lot of heart, which is why he was more than willing to look after Kara (Melissa Benoist) once he struck it out on his own away from Superman. But the question remains whether he can really step into the light now that he’s filling the same role for Supergirl.

“It’s very easy to be in someone’s shadow even if you’re at the top of your game just because they can fly,” Brooks tells EW. “I wouldn’t say that James is struggling, but he’s looking for a way to find himself and also be his higher self as well.”

However, his dynamic with Kara certainly is different than it was with Kal-El. “There’s definitely an attraction there,” Brooks says. “There’s also a bro code. You’re moving to Metropolis to National City, and Superman is your best friend, you can’t go over there and hit on his cousin. Even if there is an attraction, I’m not sure it’s something he could pursue immediately.”

But his relationship with Kara is what may put James in the line of fire. “It’s a dangerous position to be in, but he’s been there before,” he says. “He’s been that for Superman for so long that it’s almost old hat. He’s not really frightened by that. Although, it is exploited a couple different times. Because Kara does care about James, villains will try to use that against her.

Keeping their relationship platonic is probably a good thing since he’s just reignited his relationship with Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan-Tatum), though that may hit a rough patch once her father comes to town. “General Lane [Glenn Morshower] and Jimmy have a tumultuous relationship in some ways,” Brooks explains. “I don’t think it’s a personal thing. General Lane thinks that nobody is good enough for his daughter. There’s also the element of General Lane being a well-decorated military personnel whose job it is to protect the country from enemies foreign and domestic. He considers Superman and Supergirl a foreign enemy. It’s a complicated situation and James is looking for his respect.”

He may find it in next week’s episode when an earthquake strikes National City just as Kara loses her powers. “It’s one of my favorite episodes,” Brooks says. “He steps up as a hero. We really see James come into his own as somebody who can operate in that heroic universe. Obviously he’s not flying around and doing stuff that Kryptonians do, but it really does show that he can be considered a hero. He helps save people. It was a lot of fun to shoot. I really enjoy the action stuff.”

Everyone wants to test a Kryptonian's strengths and weaknesses through combat. This week, "Supergirl" adds General Sam Lane to her growing laundry list of those who want to see exactly what she's capable of.

In order to push the nascent hero to her limits, Lane pits her against a super-powered android dubbed the Red Tornado. Brought to life by actor Iddo Goldberg -- who also portrays Tornado's creator, T.O. Morrow -- the field test quickly grows dangerous as Tornado develops sentience while battling Supergirl.

Ahead of the CBS series' latest episode, aptly titled "Red Faced," Goldberg spoke with CBR about the origin of his Red Tornado, what makes him such a formidable foe for star Melissa Benoist's Supergirl, and the fun he had filming fight scenes under circumstances he describes as "like working on a huge blockbuster feature film."

CBR News: For those unfamiliar with the character, and for those familiar with the comic book version, who is "Supergirl's" Red Tornado?

Iddo Goldberg: We have the D.E.O., who is working with Supergirl. Then, that organization is working with the American Army. Sometimes they don't see eye to eye.

Now, we have General Sam Lane who is coming and saying that he wants to test Supergirl. What we don't know is he and Dr. T.O. Morrow have been working on a project: Red Tornado, an unbelievably advanced android they have created as a test for Supergirl. Things don't go according to plan for them. Let's just say the Red Tornado becomes sentient, goes rogue and starts to wreak havoc. The episode is all about Kara gaining control over this rogue killing machine.

How was it putting a "Supergirl" spin on an established character like Red Tornado?

I had a lot of fun on that set. It was a real treat to be on board with everyone. Obviously, Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have been at it for a while. It was like working for a very well-oiled machine. They are so into it and so passionate about it.

I was never a huge comic book fan. I moved from Israel to the U.K. when I was 10, so most of my readings and learning English -- I missed a little bit of that, of that whole world. It was really fun finding out things about the character and realizing certain people were really into it. You had to be more of a hardcore comic book fan to know who the character is. This character has been around since the late '60s, and knowing this is the first time that someone has put him up for real on the screen, was a huge undertaking and something I was proud of. It was a great experience.

Supergirl is one of the most powerful beings on the planet. What makes Red Tornado such a force to be reckoned with for her?

Think of an entity that can create a tornado in the palm of his hand. You will see there are a lot of people walking the streets, so it's a very dangerous power to have, especially a very dangerous power to have out of control. You're talking about someone that could pretty much take off and land anywhere he wants and continue to wreak havoc.

Red Tornado also has a rather distinct appearance. What went into transforming you from man into machine? Was it an evolving process?

Yeah, we had several specialized fittings. Everything had to be made for me, and had to be made to measure. That was an amazing experience in itself, going through all these molds of my head. Everything was specially created for the shape of my head. There were masks, costumes and repeated fittings, because everything had to be just right. Everything had to be workable, because there was a lot of action involved. Some stuff had to look good while you were standing still, but this costume had to move around a lot, because Red Tornado and Supergirl go at it pretty hard. It was quite a process, getting everything fit and get everything to be moveable.

Was his blue cape ever in the mix?

Not to my knowledge. Michael Grassi and Rachel Shukert, who wrote the script for "Red Faced," -- I'm not sure if they, Greg, Andrew and Ali Adler had ideas about the cape. I certainly never found out about it. I would have liked to have a cape. I had a lot to work with anyway, so I was pretty satisfied.

What was it like filming some of those giant action sequences?

I can tell you, in all my 12-15 years of working, I've never filmed an action sequence this big. It was insane. A very, very big road had to be closed down. It was like working on a huge blockbuster feature film, or as close to that as possible. It was brilliant. My phone was in my trailer. I couldn't take any pictures, which kills me to this day. It was very grand and blockbuster-like.

In the end, do you consider Red Tornado a "villain?"

I'm not sure I should answer that question. In this episode, there is conflict. There is something sentient about this character. There is something that is not completely android about him. I'll leave it at that.

Storm clouds are gathering over National City in the next episode of Supergirl when Kara (Melissa Benoist) goes toe to toe with Red Tornado (Iddo Goldberg).

Kara will meet her cyclone adversary initially as Dr. T.O. Morrow, who arrives at the DEO with General Lane (Glenn Morshower) to help test Kara's powers. As comic book readers already know, General Lane becomes a long-term nemesis for Supergirl, so his introduction with Red Tornado will be a pivotal step in Kara's journey.

TVGuide.com talked to Goldberg about what Morrow's plans are when he arrives and why Red Tornado will be such a menacing force for the Kryptonian hero.

What does that name T.O. Morrow say about your character?

Goldberg: It's a play on the word tomorrow because he's fascinated with the future and pretty much ahead of his time.

Can you tease what Morrow's relationship with General Lane is and how we'll meet them?

Goldberg: They are working on a military experiment. General Lane comes to the DEO under the premise of testing Supergirl. They want to test Supergirl and this new android so in the future they can create a military cyclone shield. Dr. T.O. Morrow and General Lane have been working on this project for a while. We don't know how long, but I can tell you that T.O. Morrow has been working on tornadoes possibly for most of his life. The character, the entity and the android have been on Morrow's mind probably forever.

What does he have against Supergirl that makes him want to target her now?

Goldberg: When we meet Dr. Morrow and General Lane as they come to the DEO, Morrow is basically an employee of the military. We don't necessarily have a problem with Supergirl. He's just the genius that created the android. It's only later in the episode that things go awry and wreak havoc that people start taking sides. The real contest is between Red Tornado and Supergirl.

In the comic books, Red Tornado eventually becomes a hero. Does your Red Tornado have that same potential?

Goldberg: At the moment, we're only going to see him as a villain. He is definitely a villain for the time being.

What is it that makes Red Tornado such a menacing villain for Supergirl?

Goldberg: He can create a tornado in the palm of his hand. Once you have something that can create that force and power, and that becomes rogue and out of control, it can destroy everything.

What are you most excited for people to see in this episode?

Goldberg: The action sequences. They blew my mind. I obviously knew that Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti are going to make this an amazing show, but the action sequences that I was a part of were just so huge. The locations and the way they were shot were so grand. It was more like being on a blockbuster movie. I have definitely never seen something as grand in size. I would say that people are really going to be blown away by it.

Two months after fans got a first look at Iddo Goldberg suited up as the Red Tornado, the actor will finally make his "Supergirl" TV debut.

On Monday night, Supergirl will get to unleash some super-powered steam as she tests out the limits of the military's latest weapon, Red Tornado -- or what Iddo's other character, Dr. T.O. Morrow, describes as an "anthropomorphic pseudo entity with combat capabilities."

As he prepped for the role, Iddo told the folks in charge of stunts and fight training for the CBS drama that he was ready for anything.

"I made it very clear to them before we started that I wanted to get as down and dirty as possible and I was up for all of that physical stuff," Iddo told Access.

"The thing [with] stunt training and fight training is that you end up doing a lot of it and then you get to set and the geography of the set is completely different to the space you've been rehearsing and everything has to change very quickly. That's usually what I've found," he continued. "And also, on the day, everything is just a lot more exciting and you really just get into and it was so much fun."

Preparations to take on the Red Tornado character in "Supergirl" meant a number of wardrobe fittings for the actor.

"This thing just kind of transformed over time and I had to have quite a few fittings for it because it was one of those outfits that I was really going to have to be able to move quite a lot in, so everything had to be quite specific and I just kept on coming back for more and more fittings as this costume was being built for me and it was just so exciting," he said. "I remember going for one of my fittings thinking I was going to see all of it and I remember going to the fitting and they said, 'Oh, no, they're not doing that full fitting until Monday,' and I was genuinely disappointed."

Iddo said he felt the significance of the job when work was being done on the Red Tornado headpiece.

"I just remember being there with this mold covering my whole head and just thinking how lucky I was to be in that position because I don't know when I'm going to play a supervillain again. I don't know when that's going to happen and I got to play two characters as well so it was real treat and like I was saying, as the fittings process progressed, I just found myself getting more and more excited. I just couldn't wait to start," he said.

In Monday's episode, something is set to go wrong and the Red Tornado will whirl its way toward Kara's town, with potential to cause major destruction.

"You will definitely see me creating havoc in National City and I can also tell you that for one of the havoc sequences they had to shut down a huge street to film it in and it was pretty amazing," Iddo said of the Southern California-shot show. "It was so grand and big and you read it in the script and you think to yourself, yeah, I can see how that's going to happen, and then, when I got there, it was a big, big, big road shut down for this sequence and I think it's going to be brilliant."

Monday night, viewers will get to see just how Kara/Supergirl deals with the Red Tornado problem. And, should his character survive, Iddo would return to the show in a flash.

"I had a great time on the set and everyone there really knows what they're doing, and it's a beautifully oiled machine and the cast was so much fun to be with -- really welcoming," he said, adding, "I would definitely come back."

Supergirl’s Maxwell Lord is perhaps the most mysterious character in a show full of mysterious characters. Though we learnt a bit more about his background in last week’s episode — he is an orphaned genius billionaire trying to keep the world safe from threats, including superheroes — there’s still much we don’t know about Lord.

Luckily, The Televixen had the chance to sit down with Peter Facinelli, the man behind the character, at New York Comic Con last month. Here’s what Facinelli told us about Lord’s motives, humor, and potential karaoke song …

Lord is not a super villain — he’s just out to save the world.

For the record, there have been a lot of super villains who were just “out to save the world,” but Facinelli seems intent on declaring Lord’s intentions, at least, as good: “I think that he believes that humans should save themselves and that aliens or superheroes aren’t necessarily a good thing for us,” he said. “For one, he looks at Supergirl like she’s a magnet for trouble. If she wasn’t in the city, we wouldn’t have other superheroes coming here, battling her, destroying bridges, costing our city money.”

Of course, as we saw in last week’s episode, Lord’s intentions to save the world are not mutually exclusive to his plans to study superhero power. As Facinelli explained: “He has a fascination with superheroes because he wants to figure out a way to maybe harness that power for humanity, but he’s not necessarily pro-superhero or supervillain. I don’t think he has an evil side, like he’s not trying to take over the world, he just has a very clear perspective on humanity.”

Lord’s relationship with Cat Grant.

After last week’s episode, I’m convinced Maxwell Lord has romantic chemistry with pretty much everyone on this show. However, the actor played up the dynamic between Lord and media mogul (and Kara’s boss) Cat Grant, mentioning that the two have “a Dangerous Liaisons kind of history.”

What does that mean exactly? Facinelli clarified: “I think my character respects her and likes her, but also we don’t always see eye to eye.”

The many sides of Maxwell Lord.

When asked to make comparisons between Maxwell Lord from the TV show and Maxwell Lord from the comics, Facinelli said: “I think, in the comics, he’s a little more Forbes magazine and a lot more Trump-esque, you know? But I think my character’s more Elon Musk or Steve Jobs. Today’s billionaire is a little different than yesterday’s billionaire. He’s a little bit cooler, hipper, hopefully sexier. But the essence of the comic book character is there.”

Of course, any character worth his or her salt is complex, and Lord is not without his complexities. Facinelli described: “Like Kara has a lot of different personalities, I think Maxwell Lord has a lot of different facets to his personality. In some places, he can be very Trump-esque, where he gets in front of the news and he’s trying to push his agenda. And then there’s times where he’s softer.”

On the humor of Maxwell Lord.

Supergirl is a lighthearted TV show that isn’t afraid to dabble in the comical. Will Lord get a chance to be funny as the season progresses? According to Facinelli: “There’s some quippy, Die Hard lines, but I think it comes out of the tension. It’s not meant to be super comical. You know how, in Die Hard, there’s a lot of tension, and then there’s a line that makes you laugh.”

As for the musical episode that Supergirl needs to have given its uber musically-talented cast? Lord claims he is the least musically-inclined of his co-stars and might have to sit out such an episode, but did give an (on the spot) answer on what Maxwell Lord’s karaoke song would be: “Maybe Drake’s ‘Energy.’ He’s got a lot of enemies.”

One of the highlights of the CBS series Supergirl (airing Monday nights at 8PM ET/PT with new episodes still airing on the next two Mondays) is the performance of Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters, Ally McBeal) as Kara’s boss, Cat Grant, head of the CatCo corporation and source of many of the show’s best lines.

Yesterday, we were part of a group of journalists visiting the Burbank, California sets of the hit CBS series, and we talked to the actress about what it’s like to be Cat.

Every episode seems to peel back a layer of what makes up Cat. Can you talk about that?

It does, actually. I’m not in charge of the writing, but they do such a brilliant job of – just like you said, they peel it back every week. We see her sensitive side; we see the reason she behaves the way she does… so we just are slowly getting clued in to a more three-dimensional kind of character.

What I really love about it is that she can snap right back into the old Cat as well. It’s flexible, in that she can kind of do whatever she wants.

She also unwittingly helps Kara out with whatever is going on with her life and her journey.

I think that Cat sees something special in Kara and is really smart. She gives her advice without giving her advice, and tells her what to do by being kind of nasty and suggesting it in her way, and nobody really gets that, but I think that’s because Cat is so good at it, and she’s so smart. She can manipulate that advice, but in a way that it doesn’t sound like advice. That’s how I think of it.

Is Cat based on anybody in your real life, or a figure you may have seen on television?

No, she isn’t. I get everything I do from the script. It is all right there. I barely have to do anything, and the writing is just so good that it comes right off the page. But sometimes I’ll try different variations — I think of her as a very busy person, and she just has to get the job done, and sometimes I’ll say “well, what if I just was REALLY nasty, and see how that works?” And then “ah, that didn’t work”… I’ve just kind of been playing around. I still don’t really know who she is yet, and it’s kind of trying to find the balance and the tone of when she’s just busy, and when she’s kind of nasty, and when she’s impatient, and when she’s angry… you don’t want anything to be shrill all the time, and annoying… that can get really old… so, it’s just trying to find the colors in her, but at the core of it, she’s just a busy, strong, unapologetic boss who has to get the job done, and she does not tolerate fools at all. She gets impatient. In a script coming up, I say something like “I’m impatient with dumb people.” It’s things like that.

Will we see more with Cat and Maxwell Lord (Peter Facinelli)?

I don’t know! You know, we were just talking recently.. we saw each other in the parking lot… and I said “What? They don’t like us together, or something?” Because we’ve had no scenes together since that one episode when we were dancing. So I don’t know where that’s going to go.

In “Livewire,” we saw Cat getting into the fight a little bit. Do you like doing those action scenes?

I thought it was really fun. I really enjoyed it. I would like to see her get out more. I think it’s kind of funny to see that character so out of her element, and then not be out of her element. It would be really fun to see her kick some butt. It’s fun to do, too.

Will we be seeing more with Cat and her mother (Joan Juliet Buck)?

I hope so. There are so many issues! I think we get a glimpse why Cat is the way she is, a little bit, too. I liked the dynamic of the mom and Cat.

How has Cat’s relationship with her mother influenced how she is with her son, Carter?

I think she says it in that episode with my mother — Carter’s always going to know how proud I am of him. So, I think I’ve learned and have to make a conscious effort not to do what my mother did to me. I try to be the opposite of my mother.

Is it interesting being a character seen and known by younger viewers for your role as Cat?

It’s funny; I dropped off my son at school — there’s a middle school and a high school, and there were some girls who saw me in the car, and they were waving, and I was waving back, and then my son was mortified…. but it’s really nice.

Have any of them ever been scared of you, though?

You would think they would be terrified of me! But no. I haven’t had that experience yet.

I was wondering… last night’s episode, I think I was drunk in the scene, and I remember thinking to myself “I wonder if this is a good thing,” and every time they want me to go get a drink in the office, I say “well, we don’t want her to get a drink every time she’s upset.” So it’s that balance between the older audience and the younger audience that I try to keep in mind.

How much influence do you have over your character?

I think it’s really collaborative. Everybody’s really open to any ideas that you have. Everybody wants to explore. Nobody really knows yet — it is so early in the process, so it’s very collaborative, very open, and you try something, it doesn’t work, you throw it out, and you try something out. Ali Adler is the producer on the set, and when I said “I can’t keep going to alcohol,” she put a little jar of jelly beans, so I went over and started eating jelly beans.

Everybody works together in that way. It’s great. It’s really open-minded up there.

Do you improvise any of your lines?

Sometimes. I think I started saying “Chop-Chop!” and then the next script, it was written. So, little things like that… occasionally I’ll add a little line at the very end of the scene so they have the ability to cut it out if they don’t like it.

You mentioned Cat being smart. Is there any possibility she might have a clue that Kara might be Supergirl?

No. Not yet. She’s smart, but she’s not that smart!

A bizarre thing happened at the end of the last episode of "Supergirl" -- Kara Danvers bled.

It's a new experience for the Kryptonian, and the timing couldn't be worse. Next episode finds National City in danger just after the city's resident superhero has lost her powers. In "Human For a Day," an earthquake strikes, and Kara and her friends -- including James Olsen -- must rise to the occasion without the help of super strength.

We spoke with Mehcad Brooks about his character stepping into the hero role for the episode, how his family history has helped shape James' career goals, and the ever-evolving love triangle between him, Kara and Lucy Lane.

CBR News: James gets to take on a more heroic position than we're used to seeing in the next episode. What can we expect from him?

Mehcad Brooks: There's an earthquake that happens, and since Kara has lost her powers, James has to take over her job. There's people that need help here and there, all around CatCo and all around National City. They go around as a this three-person team -- James, Kara and Winn -- and James does a lot of the heroics. I loved it; it was so fun.

James is often in a more supporting role when it comes to heroics, traditionally as Superman's friend, and in this series, as Supergirl's confidante. Does his upcoming experience change his perspective on what Kara and Clark do?

I think that she's started seeing him in a new way, where he really is -- he's learned from the best, he's picked up a lot of tactics and pointers from Superman. But at the same time, he's also done his best to come into his own and to be his higher self, and I think that she sees a lot of that coming to fruition in the episode.

At the same time, James realizes that Kara is coming into her own, not only physically as a superhero, but emotionally, spiritually and mentally. She's able to do certain really heroic things without using her super powers. She doesn't even need her powers to be a superhero, and so there's a new respect, I think, between both characters. And I think it's a really beautiful thing. I love the lesson, because we're really talking to the audience at that point, and it's really cool.

You mentioned it was a fun episode for you fun -- did you get to dive into some stunts and action?

Yeah, I got to do some really, really cool stuff -- I don't know if I can say. I can say I love wire work. Wire work is fantastic, except for, after about three hours, you're like, "Please, get me out of this harness. This is crazy." I've been skydiving before, and it's kind of the same situation, but skydiving lasts like three minutes, four minutes. In the harness, you're just attached to a crane, so that can be all day. It was a lot of fun.

I loved just running around and acting like a big kid. That's who I am. It's like when you play cops and robbers, or Superman, or whoever your favorite comic book character was as a kid. You'd be running around, jumping off couches with towels wrapped around your neck and stuff like that. That's kind of what I was doing, just with a bigger budget.

When James isn't helping Supergirl, he works at CatCo, where he recently stepped into a leadership position while Cat was occupied. What are his career goals?

Funny you should ask that, because the episode that we're referring to sort of makes James realize that he wants to be more like the old Jimmy. He wants to be back out there in the field. He wants to get back on the beat. He wants to put the camera back around his neck, and he -- I think we can all relate to this. We put our heads down and work so hard to get to where we are, we forget to look up and think about, "Is this really where we want to be?" James is guilty of the same situation. He gets the right office and the right title and the right desk, and maybe a lot of that is for the right reasons, and maybe some of that's for reasons that we'll tell you in the show. But there is something calling him, and he sees it firsthand when he's out there in the field helping people.

I liken him to a war reporter. He can't stay home. He can't go to the office and have dinner at his house five days a week -- he's going to go crazy. He has to go be in the dirt, and he has to go get some mud on his boots. That's really what he wants again. It's a cool thing. I think it's great for the fans, because they're going to see a part of Jimmy they haven't seen yet, which is the guy with a camera around his neck.

Since we do see a lot of that in the present, will we ever learn more about James' past? About his family and his work before CatCo?

Yes. I'm glad that every character in the show has a really rich backstory, and then some secrets, if you will. We do get involved in Jimmy's past. He has some unresolved issues with his parents, like most of us do, and his are pretty prevalent. Kara tries to help him through that.

As he grows, he balances out the man that he was thinking that his father wanted him to be versus the man that he wants to be. I think we all can relate to that, and it's really kind of a cool thing that we're watching that happen on the screen. I don't really know a lot of shows that give you explosions, heat vision, flying and family. [Laughs]

James and Kara's friendship has come such a long way already; what you can tease about their dynamic in the episodes ahead?

I can tell you that things get complicated with the love triangle, and then things also become less complex. James is pulled back towards Lucy, and then he's pulled back towards Kara. I mean, it just gets complex, but then it gets simple and then complex again. This is why we have the "It's Complicated" button on Facebook. It's a modern-day relationship.

In our society, we have -- it's game theory. There are a lot of options, and I think if people aren't really sure about how someone's going to treat your heart, you leave it open because I think it's scary. The scariest thing is to jump back into something that already hurt you, and I think that's really understandable. I hope he doesn't come off as somebody who's trying to play the field; it's more like he's actually just really afraid of being hurt again by the same person. I think we can all relate to that.
