It's just a few more days until fans get their first look at the DC's Legends of Tomorrow season finale -- easily the most buzzed-about episode since the pilot.

Like Supergirl, the series started out white-hot but shed viewers throughout the season -- and like Supergirl, Legends has managed to win over some of its critics, with the strongest episodes of the season taking place in its final act. Meanwhile, Thursday's episode will feature a mysterious DC character who will play a key role in guiding the crew of the Waverider in Season Two.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim joined ComicBook.com to talk about the finale and tease the second season. You can see part of that conversation below, and more of it will run on Thursday once the episode has aired.

When did you decide that the Time Masters were going to be, essentially, the bad guys?

I think it came out of the pilot. When we first met Rip, the Time Masters were saying "Sorry, we're not going to help you," and it got us wondering -- why wouldn't they?

Their reasoning, ultimately, came down to feeling they needed Savage to repel a Thanagarian invasion. Considering the Thanagarian connection to the Hawks in the comics, it can't be a coincidence that Savage's destiny and that of the Hawks are so linked on the show, can it?

No, I would say not.

Can we expect to see the Thanagarians play a role in the finale?

You know -- the idea of the Thanagarians will connect up with the finale, but probably not in the way that you think. It doesn't involve an invasion, but it acknowledges the connection.

Obviously fans were thrilled with the way Jonah Hex worked on the series. Could that open the door to more appearances like that by other DC heroes?

We really -- when it comes to something like having Jonah on the show, we didn't look at it as something that would thrill the fans -- we look at it as a bucket list. We wanted to do Jonah.

We love the idea that the show is a gateway to the whole of the DC Universe, and we have an actual opportunity to go to every corner of the DC Universe, any time or any place that the story makes sense.

I also think that Johnathon Schaech was an incredible Hex, and we were talking last night about doing another episode with him already.

I will say that you'll see even more DC characters in Season Two. By a large margin.

You've been dealing with the "When's John Constantine coming?" question for a while now -- and now you've got Supergirl coming to The CW...

Yeah, my life never gets any easier, does it? [Laughs]

Well, here's the thing: do you guys ever talk about balancing stuff like that, where people really want to see it, versus introducing new characters and expanding out the DC Universe even more?

Well, and I know there are plenty of people on my Twitter feed who don't believe this, we don't start an episode with "how do we please the fans this week?" If there's anybody who we're trying to please when we make these episodes, it's us.

That isn't to say that we don't want the fans to be happy, but I've found that when you set out to please everybody, it hardly ever works and it doesn't usually make for good storytelling. When we set out to make the show that we would want to watch, that's when it tends to be its best.

So we don't start with trying to build a story around a character we want to include. We start with what's happening in the characters' lives, and we ask what's cool, what's fun, and what do we want to see?

You can't feel obligated to check a box. The most assured way to not please the fans is to try too hard to please the fans and lose sight of story and characters.

by Christina Radish 18 Mayo 2016

DC Universe Online is now available on Xbox One consoles for the first time, and actor Brandon Routh sat down with Jens Andersen, executive creative director of Daybreak Game Company (formerly Sony Online Entertainment), for a day of gaming. A part of the DC Universe himself, having played Superman in Superman Returns and now Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, in The CW series Legends of Tomorrow, Routh entered the open world of the game and created a customized character, before walking the streets and exploring legendary locations in the game.

During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, Brandon Routh talked about how long he’s been a gamer, what makes the DC Universe so special, in all of its mediums, why he enjoys immersive games, and why he’s hardwired to play the superhero and not the villain, in the gaming world. He also talked about what attracted him to the role of Ray Palmer, the fun of getting to put on The Atom suit, how being a part of the DC Universe has exceeded his expectations, and what makes Legends of Tomorrow so unique.

Collider: For those of us who know nothing about the gaming world, what can you say about what DC Universe Online is, what made you want to get involved, and what interested you in the whole concept of it?

BRANDON ROUTH: Well, I’ve been a gamer since the invention of the Nintendo, and I’ve played massive multi-player online role-playing games, like Warcraft. I’m a big fan of the immersive quality of these games. You can create your own character and take them through leveling them up and having those experiences. You can have a little bit of escapism, but also live in a world that doesn’t truly exist right now. So, I’m a fan of that style of game play. Now that I’ve been two superheroes in the DC Universe, it’s even more fun to be a part of this, in a different way, and play through the game, and play alongside other heroes and fight the villains that exist in the DC Universe. One of the cool things for me, that I enjoy, is just the character creation process, where you’re either a hero or a more villainous character, and giving them abilities, deciding what their suit is going to look like, what their powers are going to be, and what their name is going to be. It really brings you into the whole gaming process. And with DCUO, it’s incredibly detailed, from what you’re wearing to hair color and eye color to how big of a character you want to be, physically to your abilities and how you get your powers. It’s a really cool thing to live through. You can create your own superhero, which pretty much all of us have dream about for all of our lives.

Since you were a part of the gaming world before you became a part of the DC Universe, how much cooler is it for you now?

ROUTH: Movies and television shows are made from games, all the time, and games are being made from comic book properties or TV shows. It’s all intertwined in the DC Universe. I had an opportunity to be a part of a Superman game, back when Superman Returns came out. I voiced the character, and that was a really cool way of getting into the character and understanding what Superman is and has been throughout the years, and what he means to people. And this is another way of seeing how myself and other fans can live out their superhero dreams and just get away from the craziness that exists in life sometimes. What’s so cool about DC and the universe that’s been created, over all these years, is that there are different ways to live out your ideas about superheroes. This is a raw, physical way, ‘cause you can get really button jammy with the controller and get out some of your frustrations, and it can be cathartic to beat up other characters in the game.

Is it fun to really get to delve into such iconic locations and explore them in the gaming world, in a way that you wouldn’t necessarily get to on a set or for something you’re not a part of yourself?

ROUTH: Exactly! The world that they’ve created is incredibly in-depth. Just like we do the best to do with our show, the environments are so big, huge and colorful that you really get sucked into the game and the storyline. People will learn a lot of things about the DC Universe and the villains and heroes while they’re in this world. This is just another medium for storytelling. You can be a part of the fantastical world of superheroes, and it’s a great addition to the DC Universe and Legends of Tomorrow, as there’s also downloadable content that is inspired by the show where you can play alongside some of us.

People know that you’ve played superheroes, whether it’s Clark Kent/Superman or Ray Palmer/The Atom, so when you get a chance to delve into a gaming world like this, do you ever want to play the villain to see what that’s like?

ROUTH: I’m hardwired not to be a villain. In the game, it’s never that appetizing to me. I always want to be the hero, of some sort, whether I’m the lead hero or support, like the hero type or the protective type for my team. I do enjoy it when I am acting and playing a character, but in a game, it’s harder for me to get away from not being the good guy and saving the day.

People really loved your work as Superman, and we all know that didn’t get to go on as long as people expected and only lasted for one movie. Did you ever feel like you might not want to jump into a superhero role, if the opportunity came up, or were you always open to the possibility, before you knew about Ray Palmer?

ROUTH: I think I was always open, I just never thought the opportunity would present itself. having played the pinnacle of all superheroes, I just didn’t think that would be an option. So, when the producers came to me with the opportunity to play Ray Palmer, I had to stop and think about it. The biggest thing for me was that they wanted Ray to be comedic and to be the light in Season 3 of Arrow. That’s what truly inspired me to take on the role. I wanted to be able to work on my comedy chops. It’s something that I love to do, and that was the best part about the opportunity, for me.

When you signed on to play Ray Palmer, you must have done so without knowing when The Atom might come about. What did you think the journey might be, when you started out? Did you just sign on for Arrow, or did you know that you’d also have the opportunity to be on The Flash and that there could be another show, in the future?

ROUTH: No, it was only about Arrow. But I knew that because of the success and the way that The Flash happened, that it was a possibility that, if people responded to Ray Palmer and I did a decent job, it might be something that could happen, beyond Arrow and beyond a couple episodes of The Flash. The Atom aspect of Ray was teased, but that was part and parcel of the audience responding to Ray. Thankfully, they did, so that he could exist and The Atom could be a bigger part of the DC Universe, and also influence things like this game and inspire other people to come in and make their Atom inspired character to play with in the game.

In what ways would you say that playing this character and being a part of the DC Universe has most exceeded your expectations?

ROUTH: I felt this going in, but being a part of it made it even more clear, that these are not just characters. These are ways for us to learn about ourselves and ways for us to tell scary stories, in a way that is more palatable. Our brains will open up to and listen to stories of oppression, abuse and the evil that exists in the world, and we can learn from it. It shows the potential of all human beings to be like these superheroes. For me, Superman is an allegory for us to see that we can be Superman-like. Even if we don’t have physical powers, we have the mental and emotional intelligence to work towards being in a more Superman-like state. Superheroes are forms of expression, whether it’s going to a movie and watching it and learning something, whether it’s watching a show like Legends of Tomorrow on television, or creating your own character and working your own issues out in a game. It’s about having fun with friends and having a social experience.

Have you had more fun getting to put on The Atom suit, or is it equally as cool to get to dress up for all of the different eras you get to explore on Legends of Tomorrow?

ROUTH: They’re both equally fun. The Atom suit, I’ve certainly been in a lot now, so I often find that dressing for the new eras that we’re in are a little bit more fun and usually more comfortable. I really enjoyed the Wild West era. I like how the clothes can help you express a different side of the character. That’s true in life, and that’s true in gaming. Another cool thing about these kinds of games, is that if you want to change what you look like, you can, to a degree. You can continue to express and re-imagine how your hero or villain looks, and you can change your game play and attitude. The show definitely does that, to a large degree, and it allows me to express different sides of who Ray Palmer is, in any given moment.

Because the DC Universe has been around for so many years, and there have been so many incarnations of these characters and stories, how much do you feel like you know Ray Palmer and The Atom? Do you feel like you’re an expert on the character, or do you feel like you still have so much to learn about him?

ROUTH: I feel like I’m an expert on my Ray Palmer. I’m not the definitive version of Ray Palmer. That’s in the eye of the beholder. What I present in the performance that I give in front of the camera is interpreted differently by the viewers. Not everybody sees the same scene, the same way. I just work to do my best and to put the emotion into it. But, I definitely feel like there’s tons more to learn. I’ve lived 36 years as Brandon Routh and I’m still learning, every day. I’ve been playing Ray Palmer for a year and a half, so there’s a lot more to learn.

It was very cool to learn about Ray Palmer’s brother, Sydney, who also looks a whole lot like Ray. Are you hoping that is something that will come up again, at some point?

ROUTH: Yeah, that’s actually one thing where, in the midst of filming, I didn’t even really think too much of the possibility of meeting up with Sydney. It will be interesting to see even more, as our show progresses, how much we influence the world of this game, as well. There’s already Legends of Tomorrow inspired content available, so it will be interesting to see what other things might come of that. We appreciate what the audience wants, and it will be interesting to see if it pops up in different mediums.

When you read the season finale script for Legends and learned about where the story would end up this season, what was your reaction?

ROUTH: Without giving anything away, the world is ever-expanding. Once you think you know what our show is, it changes, which is exciting for me. It’s a little bit unsettling, as well. That’s what is unique and cool about our show. Running into the unexpected is what makes life interesting, and the same thing can be said for the show. You want to be continually challenged, in different ways, or have some impossible big bad to fight, that you must defeat, in order to continue. That’s what drives us forward.

It’s fight or flight time for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, who in the CW drama’s freshman finale (airing Thursday at 8/7c) must recoup from a devastating if noble loss and make one final, hopefully successful, run at the immortal Vandal Savage.

What ace in the hole does Savage have yet to play? Do the Legends have any tricks of their own left to reveal? And how does a mystery man figure into the series’ future (so to speak)? Here, showrunner Marc Guggenheim previews the final showdown and more.

TVLINE | As the joke goes, I guess my first question is not so much where the Legends will have their final faceoff with Vandal Savage, but when.
That’s correct. Basically they’re having their fight across our “greatest hits,” which, let’s be honest, no other TV show can do. We’re really embracing the time travel nature of the show.

TVLINE | So we’ll throw a few punches in, like, 1974, then crack a few heads in 1989…? Something like that?
You’re pretty close.legends-of-tomorrow-season-1-photos (7)

TVLINE | What resources does Vandal have at this point? Does he still have an army?
He still has his army, but he doesn’t have the backing of the Time Masters. On the other hand, he has the time ship that the Time Masters have given him. I will say that probably the biggest asset he has is the knowledge about the Thanagarians, that the Time Masters have given him. That plays a key role in his evil plan.

TVLINE | How is the team’s morale after bidding Leonard adieu?
It’s pretty low. It wasn’t just losing Leonard. It was losing Leonard, and Kendra and Carter, and literally losing track of Vandal Savage. So when we come in at the top of the season finale, literally all is lost, so they’re in a pretty dark place. Dare I say they are ready to give up?

TVLINE | Who’s going to deliver the rousing pep talk that gets our team back on the field?
That’s a good question. I think what’s fun about this episode is usually there is one inspirational speech — that’s sort of become the trope, and everyone rallies behind it. But this time it’s a little different. This time it’s a bit of everyone coming to the same conclusion separately.

TVLINE | Like you said, they’ve lost so much — might as well go down swinging, right?
Exactly. The mission is not done.

TVLINE | We’ve seen many fight sequences and gizmos over the course of the season. Is there anything particularly cool and new in the finale that maybe we haven’t quite seen before?
There are a few things. I think a couple of people are going to display some new powers, and as we’ve sort of intimated, the epic fight against Savage is wholly unique. I’ve got to give a shout out to Kevin Mock, our editor, who really put together, I would say, one of the most unique sequences that you’ve seen on a time travel show — because it’s not only epic but it is taking place literally across history.

TVLINE | “A time travel show” — of which there are many now!
Yeah. I mean, it’s crazy. [ABC, CBS and Fox all have new time travel series premiering next season.] It’s very, very interesting. I wish all those showrunners luck. This time travel thing is not for the faint of heart.

TVLINE | Well as I tweeted to Kryptonsite’s Craig Byrne, let’s hope they don’t all have different sets of rules, because that’ll be impossible to keep track of.
It’s funny. Legends gets a fair share of criticism from people who are like, “Wow, they’re really fast and loose with the time travel rules.” To that I say, “Yeah, guilty as charged.” I guess I watch television very differently than a lot of other people do. When I watch a time travel show, I’m not watching it to see if the rules are being followed. I don’t understand the way a lot of people watch TV these days, as if it’s some game of “Gotcha!”

I remember during the Legends pilot, we had a character make a Darth Vader reference and someone tweeted me, “You already screwed up. It’s 1975 and Star Wars didn’t come out until 1977.” I was like, “Yeah… the scene you’re talking about takes place in 2016, so get off my back.” [Laughs] We’re literally just 20 minutes into the pilot and people are already trying to play this game of “Gotcha.” It’s like, “Are you watching television or are you trying to catch [a mistake]? How is this fun for anybody?”

TVLINE | What percent of the finale is showdown and what percent is epilogue?
Great question. I will say it’s very deceptive. What’s interesting is that the season finale doesn’t feel like 42 minutes. It feels like we’re pushing a lot more story than you would typically get. There’s a lot of confrontation and climax but there’s a fair amount of setup and there’s also a fair amount of epilogue. There’s just so much going on in this episode.

TVLINE | How do you respond legends-of-tomorrow-season-1-photos (2)to the people who in the wake of last week’s death have said, “Oh man, I loved Snart! He was one of the three reasons I watch the show!”? [Next season, Wentworth Miller will be a series regular across all of The CW’s superhero shows.]
Well, I would say the other two reasons — whatever those are — are still on the show. I would also say that he’s not off the show. You’ll still see him next season. In fact, check out the season finale.

TVLINE | What is left to say about Patrick J. Adams’ role [as a mystery superhero] in the finale and beyond?
Without spoiling what I think is actually a really cool, fun moment, I will say that Patrick’s appearance serves to plant a flag for next year. We have a very definitive endpoint to the Vandal Savage story, and Patrick’s role really serves to give you a very good sense as to where we’re headed next year.

TVLINE | Lastly, reflecting on the season gone by, which technical accomplishment are you most proud of?
The visual effects that I’m most excited by on any show are the ones that aren’t such obvious visual effects. Clearly, a giant robot fight was a visual effect, but I was very, very pleased with the hangar in the Vanishing Point in Episode 15, with all the Waveriders, because that was full CG [computer-generated]. That was our characters being incorporated into a CG environment, which is something that is really hard to pull off even with feature [film] time and money. I thought it was really seamless and I think the folks at Encore, our visual effects house, did an amazing job. But certainly, the Atom fight is tough to top.

As unlikely as it may sound, time is running out for "DC's Legends of Tomorrow."

Though the team has made its reputation on traveling through the past, present and future, there are still rules they must adhere too, even if they live in a time machine. And with immortal psychopath Vandal Savage not only capturing Hawkgirl and Hawkman, but disappeared into the time stream in his own ship, their options for finding their prime adversary have narrowed. Now, the team must somehow figure out where Savage has gone, not to mention how to permanently stop him before he rewrites history.

Ahead of tonight's season finale, appropriately titled "Legendary," CBR News spoke with "Legends" executive producer Marc Guggenheim about the team's final showdown with Savage. We discuss the impact Captain Cold/Leonard Snart's death has had on the team, the role Patrick J. Adams' mysterious character plays in cementing the Legends' Season 2 mission, and the looming threat the team will face as the Thanagarian invasion of Earth inches ever closer to becoming a reality.

CBR News: In what way does the death of Captain Cold light a fire under the team?

Marc Guggenheim: Snart's death is a major blow. As you'll see in the beginning of the episode, it's a blow that is one of many. It's not just that Snart died -- it's that Kendra and Carter are still in Savage's clutches. Savage is lost in time because he now has a time machine, courtesy of the Time Masters. Things are looking pretty bad for our heroes and the state of the world. We begin the season finale with the team essentially going, "Yeah. We're screwed. There's nothing for us to do here. We've lost."

Rip has seen an Earth ravaged by the Thanagarians. How much does that future weigh on him at this point?

For right now, not that much. The Thanagarian threat is a threat that is very far out in the future. Vandal Savage presents the clear and present danger, right now. While the Thanagarians are certainly something that are relevant, and will remain relevant in Season 2, the bigger threat -- ["Legends" producer] Phil Klemmer has a great phrase: "The patient on the table is Vandal Savage."

In the beginning, these characters were very, very different in their motivations, but we've seen them gel together rather nicely over the course of the first season. How cohesive of a team are they in facing Savage this time?

It's always my preference to let the narrative speak for itself in that regard. I will say, this episode shows the team working in cohesiveness better than they did at the beginning of the year. You certainly see some evolution there.

Long before this team existed, Kendra and Carter encountered Vandal Savage time after time. What kind of closure will those two get against their immortal enemy?

I don't want to spoil anything. I'll say the end of the Savage/Kendra/Carter story is pretty definitive.

After setting the team against Vandal Savage throughout the first season, are you excited to wrap up this storyline and introduce a new adversary?

The show is always designed to tell these self-contained seasons. I've sort of described the show as a hybrid anthology -- it's part serialized drama, and part anthology. Each season offers a new mission or a new nemesis, and a story, with a beginning, middle and end. Season 2 will follow that road. We've been in the writers' room for a few weeks now, working on Season 2. I'm really excited about it. We've gotten a chance to look at all the things that worked on the show, gear towards that and avoid all the things that didn't work so well.

How does Patrick J. Adams' mysterious character figure into the big picture?

I can't say much in advance of the season finale. First of all, Patrick is a wonderful guy and a joy to work with. I can also say, while the finale gives you a very clear ending of Season 1, it plants some very deep flags in terms of what Season 2 is going to be. Patrick's involvement is critical to that.

Some fans believe Patrick is Earth-2's Green Lantern, Alan Scott.

I'll tell you right now, because I never want anyone to be disappointed, he's not Alan Scott. I love Alan Scott. I've written Alan Scott in the comics. Alan Scott is also attached to the Green Lantern franchise, which DC obviously has feature plans for. In the poll of "who it's going to be," you can cross off Alan Scott.

Now that the Time Council has been eliminated, does that change the rules of time travel?

It doesn't change the rule of time travel, per se. What it does do is, it eliminates who has been protecting time. We know that the Time Masters, for whatever their faults are, were protecting the timeline from being altered. The destruction of the Oculus, and the elimination of the Time Masters, has put the timeline without a protector. You'll hear in the season finale what the Legends plan for those circumstances.

The Legends were a rag-tag group recruited to end Savage's reign of terror. Assuming they accomplish that mission, what keeps them together afterward?

It will be clearly dramatized in the season finale. Rip will clearly articulate what the team's mission statement is for Season 2. The final moments will give you a pretty good sense to where we are heading.

Finally, now that "Supergirl" found a new home on the CW, how much has your mind been racing about the crossover possibilities?

Only in so far as crossing over three shows is a brutal affair. Crossing over four scares the crap out of me. That's going to be my answer.

There are no strings on the Legends of Tomorrow anymore. With the Oculus destroyed, the team heads into Thursday’s season finale with its free will restored — but will that be enough to defeat Vandal Savage? The key could lie with Stein, played by Victor Garber. EW caught up with Garber to get the scoop on how Stein features into the group’s big showdown with Vandal and why time travel is having such a moment.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tease about the season 1 finale?
VICTOR GARBER: A character comes in towards the end who — you can venture what will happen in the following season. But obviously Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller) has sacrificed himself for the group, and Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) decides that he’s had enough of this. He wants to send everybody back to their original life, and by doing that, we’ll discover that none of us really are satisfied, and we want to finish what we started. So that kicks off what happens in the finale and how we all just realize that one can long for what they had, but sometimes what they have is more compelling and more interesting than what they thought. And my character comes up with an ingenious way — he’s smart, Martin Stein, which is nice. I play smart people, because it’s not my go-to place in life — but he devises a way to figure out how to finally annihilate Vandal Savage.

Are there any more heartbreaking sacrifices coming for the team?
There are some goodbyes, but nothing that is forever. Because in a show like this, you never know… I’m sure Leonard will be back at some point to terrorize everyone.

Last week Stein told Rip that finding out that their lives were scripted was a little bit freeing. How is he feeling now that they’ve got free will?
Well, that’s a very good question. I think that’s what he believes in, and that’s what he wants, and it becomes apparent in the choices he makes in the last episode — and that all of us make in the last episode.

Time travel is all over TV right now, especially in the lineup of new fall shows. Why do you think that’s been a trend lately?
I think things go in waves. I remember when I was a kid there was a movie called The Time Machine, and it was popular then, too. I think it’s just that now they’ve figured out a way to do — special effects are better for television, and I think people’s hunger to move around, to [laughs] get out of this particular time period, is quite intense, frankly.

What’s been the best thing about doing Legends so far?
The genre is so different from anything I’ve ever done, and I never thought, like I never thought I’d be a spy [on Alias], I never thought I’d be traveling in time with super powers. So that’s a novelty for me, and a challenge too, because it’s not something I ever thought I would be doing. I’m grateful that Greg [Berlanti, executive producer] also saw me in this role.

Is there any chance you’ll be stopping by The Flash or any of the other DC universe series next season?
That’s always a possibility. They’re very fond of these crossovers, as difficult as they are to implement when you’re actually doing them. [Laughs] It causes a lot of confusion on a lot of different sets, but it’s fabulous for the fans, and I’m sure it will continue. And now we have Supergirl coming to our neck of the woods, so that will be fun to have her in our midst. She’s lovely, and the show, hopefully, will continue successfully there.

It's been a wild ride for Rip Hunter and his team over the past few months. They've chased Vandal Savage across time and suffered many defeats. That was especially true in last week's penultimate episode, "Destiny," where the team lost another member and learned that their entire mission has been manipulated by the Time Masters. Now it all comes down to one final battle with Savage in "legendary." Will the team finally stop their immortal foe? Will Rip's family be saved? How will the destruction of the Oculus affect Rip's mission in Season 2?

Luckily, we were able to pose these questions to Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim after watching last week's episode. Guggenheim teased what's to come in tomorrow's finale and how that will play into the new season. Guggenheim also touched on last week's dramatic twist on Arrow and its impact on Felicity Smoak. Scroll down to see what he had to say.

Warning: beware of spoilers for the most recent episodes of Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow!

Just as we hit our stride we're going off the air. But I'm really super gratified to see the reaction to the last few episodes. It's so much better than the alternative.

IGN: I forget if they've mentioned this yet, but is Season 2 supposed to be a full-length season, or is it going to be shorter than Arrow and Flash again?

Guggenheim: That's a good question that I unfortunately can't comment on because the network hasn't made their Upfront announcements.

IGN: I assume we'll be finding out soon then?

Guggenheim: Yeah, yeah. I just found out this morning.

IGN: Obviously, the biggest development with this most recent episode was the death of Captain Cold. I assume you guys wanted there to be major consequences leading into the finale, but why do you think it was specifically Leonard's time to go - at least for now?

Guggenheim: It was a combination of a few things. For one thing, we had always talked internally about killing off a lead character leading up to the finale as a way of setting and reestablishing the stakes. Knowing what Wentworth's deal with us was and the short-term nature of it, it seemed to make a lot of sense. It made sense from a logistical standpoint and Wentworth's connection to the show, but also, it made sense from a character standpoint. In many ways, Wentworth's character has gone through the most radical change over the course of these 16 episodes. He's gone from being the very selfish, "looking our for himself" kind of guy to someone who's willing to sacrifice himself for the people who have become his team.

IGN: It was interesting that you set up Mick and Ray to make that sacrifice at different points before ultimately killing Leonard. Was that just intended as a swerve or was there a point where you actually considered killing one of them instead?

Guggenheim: At the very beginning of the year, when we first started talking about the season in very broad strokes, we discussed the possibility and the likelihood of killing off one of the characters. So I'm sure there was a point in the season at every stage where every character was sacrificing themselves. Having the twist with Ray being presaged to die and then Leonard ultimate dying, that really played into the conceit of the episode, which is that the Time Masters had orchestrated a certain future for our team and they were going to do everything in their power to change that future. And that's what you saw, by virtue of Leonard dying instead of Ray.

IGN: There was kind of a hopeful outcome to this episode with the team destroying the Oculus and outsmarting the Time Masters, but also a dark one because Savage managed to return to 2166 and kill Rip's family. Is that conflict between free will and fate going to keep playing out in the finale?

Guggenheim: Not so much. With the destruction of the Oculus, we very clearly said to the characters and the audience that there is no more destiny. There is no more future. It literally is "everything is up for grabs." The question that now faces the team is, with everything up for grabs, what are they going to do? With no future to guide them, are they going to give up? Are they going to press on? What is going to happen? Everything is now in play.

IGN: What can we expect in terms of the setting in the finale? Is this turning into a kind of chase where they pursue Savage and Kendra and carter across time, or does Savage have a specific destination in mind?

Guggenheim: I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that we're going to be exploring a lot of our greatest hits over the course of the episode.

IGN: This last episode was really the first time where Mick admitted to himself and to others that he cares about this team. With Leonard gone, do you think that forces him to look to them as his new family and lean on them more than he has in the past?

Guggenheim: Yeah, Mick struggles with having feelings, particularly when those feelings are one of loyalty or sympathy. You'll see a deeper exploration of that in the season finale.

IGN: Coming off the death of a team member and the revelation that they've been manipulated by the Time Masters all along, what's the tone of the room going into the finale? How are they feeling right now?

Guggenheim: I would say pretty negative, for a couple of reasons. On one hand, they got this victory over the Time Masters and took away the idea that the future is predetermined. The problem is that, not only is Snart dead, Kendra and carter are both in Savage's clutches, and Savage has been lost to time. So they're kind of screwed at the beginning of episode 16. Things look pretty darn hopeless. A good segment of the team is going to want to give up.

IGN: The interesting thing about the Oculus situation and Rip not being able to peer into time any longer is that it seems like this could carry over into Season 2 and create a more unpredictable status quo.

Guggenheim: Oh, yeah. The ripple effect of the the destruction of the Oculus and and the end of the Time Masters is going to play a huge role in Season 2.

IGN: I wanted to ask one question about Arrow as long as I have you here. We've talked about how killing Leonard was one way to raise the stakes and establish the tone going into the finale. It feels like that's a similar case with how you ended Arrow this week and Felicity having to sacrifice thousands of lives in order to save millions from a nuclear strike. Was it important for you to establish just how high the stakes were in the fight against HIVE?

Guggenheim: Yeah, that's exactly right. One thing that we went into the season knowing was that, after three years of threatening Star City, we couldn't just threaten the city again at the end of the season. That becomes very old hat and cliched very quickly. We set a goal for ourselves of setting the bar as high as we could in terms of the stakes and in terms of the jeopardy that now the world is facing. Certainly, one way to do that is nuking a city. It was one of the bigger and bolder things we've done on the show. We were all of the collective opinion that when you're moving towards your 100th episode you have to start pushing the show further and further out of its comfort zone.

One way or another, The CW's Legends of Tomorrow is going to wrap up the story of Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) in Thursday's season one finale.

Although the immortal tyrant has repeatedly proven that he cannot be stopped by the team aboard Rip Hunter's (Arthur Darvill) Waverider, executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells The Hollywood Reporter that the Savage storyline will be exclusive to season one. He also reveals that the first season finale will set up the new season "in two very clear ways."

"As we promised, the season finale gives you a very clear definitive end to the story of Vandal Savage," Guggenheim says. "At the same time, the epilogue makes two pretty big moves. One is a statement and the other is a move that tells you where we'll be heading in season two."

What does that mean for the rookie drama's star-studded cast of heroes? Will the entire cast return for season two, or will there be a new team of Legends aboard the Waverider?

"We've always said that the show has an anthology element to it. By that, we mean that the cast will have a certain amount of rotation to it," Guggenheim says. "It's designed to not be a complete reset of the entire cast every year. But at the same time, there will be a little bit of change so that things always feel fresh. At the same time, it will always have a different mission statement and a nemesis. Each season does and should feel different from the one that came before it."

One face that will be around a lot less next season will be Wentworth Miller. The actor has been downgraded from series regular to recurring after Captain Cold was last seen sacrificing himself to save partner Heat Wave in last week's penultimate episode. Instead, Miller will cycle through several of the DC TV shows as a series regular in the Arrow-verse, recurring on Legends, Arrow and The Flash.

"We've got a very unique opportunity here, where we're telling three different stories across three different shows that all take place in the same universe," Guggenheim says. "One of the things we find to be unique about our little franchise is the fact that different characters, like they do in the comic books, can jump from series to series to series. Wentworth was a real mensch and a team player to be willing to make the kind of deal that would allow for that hopping back and forth. It's not the way things are typically done in television. Typically, people make deals for only one show. But we're branching out and trying to be pioneers. Wentworth was kind enough to be a pioneer with us."

And Miller might just be beginning.

"We've started to talk about bringing others [from Arrow and The Flash] on," Guggenheim says. "We've got some pretty good ideas for the season premiere already. It's this shared universe. We always say some cross-pollination among all the characters across all three shows makes the universe feel lived in and makes it feel like a shared universe. It's always a great deal of fun for us to do it and we've got some notions."

He continues, "In the season finale, you'll see a character from Arrow pop up. We're always cross-pollinating and that's incredibly satisfying for us. We love doing that not just because it's a fun, cool thing that a lot of shows can't do, but also because that is exactly the way the comics do things."

Just because Legends introduced a comic book character in one episode of season one, don't expect to never see that character again going forward. The Legends producers are already figuring out ways to bring back characters they loved writing this season.

"We've definitely had conversations along those lines," Guggenheim says. "I'm not prepared to say who that is going to be just yet. And it's all dependent on availability."

Although, once pressed, Guggenheim did reveal the writers are trying to figure out a way to bring back the western anti-hero Jonah Hex (Johnathan Schaech).

"Johnathan did an absolutely spectacular job and we're all just dying to have him back on the show," Guggenheim says. "Just the other day in the writers' room we were kicking around a really cool way to get him back on the show. We love that character, we love Johnathan's interpretation of that character, but we don't have a specific episode in mind. But in my mind, it's not a question of if, it's a question of when."

LUNES

8:00-9:00 PM SUPERGIRL(New Network)

9:00-10:00 PM JANE THE VIRGIN

MARTES

8:00-9:00 PM THE FLASH

9:00-10:00 PM NO TOMORROW (New Series)

MIÉRCOLES

8:00-9:00 PM ARROW

9:00-10:00 PM FREQUENCY(New Series)

JUEVES

8:00-9:00 PM DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

9:00-10:00 PM SUPERNATURAL (New Night)

VIERNES

8:00-9:00 PM THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

9:00-10:00 PM CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND (New Night)

MIDSEASON “IZOMBIE”

Television, con los productores ejecutivos Rob Thomas (“VeronicaMars,” “Party Down,” “Cupid”), Diane Ruggiero-Wright (“Veronica Mars,” “The ExList,” “That’s Life”), Danielle Stokdyk (“Veronica Mars,” “Party Down,” “Cupid”) y Dan Etheridge (“The Carrie Diaries,” “Veronica Mars,” “Party Down”).
