The Waverider takes flight for a second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow starting October 13 on The CW. The show will continue to air on Thursday nights, where this season we will meet more members of the legendary Justice Society of America!

We spoke with Executive Producer Phil Klemmer last week at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Beverly Hills, California for some intel about the upcoming second season, minutes after it was revealed that Lance Henriksen (Millennium) will be appearing in Season 2 as the JSA character Obsidian. For more details on Legends Season 2, visit our portal for the show DCLegendsTV.com.

As this interview ran a bit long, we’re splitting this interview into two parts, with Part 2 coming next week.

KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: Damien Darhk is going to in Legends of Tomorrow Season 2. Are we going to have some kind of confrontation with Sara over what he did to her sister? [EDITOR’S NOTE AND SPOILER WARNING: On Arrow, Darhk killed Sara’s sister, Laurel]

PHIL KLEMMER: It’s unavoidable. It’s inevitable. It’s interesting; Sara really has taken an unexpected leadership position within the team. I think it was clear that she and Rip had a great dynamic, and in a way, we realized that he was grooming her all along: She is meant to be a Time Master. And so, her evolution from assassin to Time Master is really rocked when she has a chance to back-slide.

Killing Damien Dahrk — that’s what the old Sara would have done. We want to force each of our characters with a chance to back-slide. In the same way, Mick Rory has evolved, but when he meets Snart, that’s like an invitation to back-slide. So if all of our characters are in recovery, we want to put that first drink in front of them and be like “are you committed to being a hero, or do you want to team up with Leonard Snart and go back to robbing banks? Do you want to commit to being the leader of this team, Sara, or do you want to do what your heart is telling you to do, which is to put a bullet in this guy’s head and save your sister’s life in 2016?”

Would Sara have any remorse for wanting to kill someone for something that they haven’t even done yet?

Not to get too heady about it, but Damien Darhk and every bad guy, it’s not as simple as killing him in the past and saving your sister in the future. It seems like that would be the metric. But even bad guys have unforeseen consequences on history. Our team are Time Masters now, and they’re presumably following the playbook that Rip has handed them. You can’t just kill people, because you don’t know the Butterfly Effect from removing a person like Damien Darhk. Who knows what unforeseen consequence that had? So, it’s all about your selfish agenda versus your Time Master agenda.

What are the chances we will see Sara meeting the Black Siren?

Hmm. Have not considered that yet… I can’t give you the odds on that. [EDITOR’S NOTE: We’re not sure if he’s joking or not, or if he’s just being coy here.]

How much of the action in Season 2 might take place in the present day?

I’d say precious little. Obviously, you want to check in with the other shows which exist in the present day, but aside from that, Season 2 I think is much more about really leaning into the fun romp through history. Do you remember the show Voyagers? I was weaned on that version [of time travel], and so for me, having a time machine means that I want to go to a famous place in history and meet famous people. That’s the fun we’re really trying to lean into, as opposed to going to the future, which is effectively sci-fi. We want to live in history book history, I think, in Season 2.

Does that history involve characters from the DC Universe past? For example, last year’s Jonah Hex episode was really popular.

Yeah. We’ll certainly be checking in with our friend Mr. Hex again.

Is there any chance we’ll be seeing Connor Hawke again?

Wow, that’s a great question! I mean, saying that just made me want to say yes immediately, because that was so much fun. Yeah! We have an embarrassment of riches on the show. Now that we have the JSA, we have an awful lot of people to give story to.

Our philosophy in this season is slightly different, in that instead of trying to divide up the pie evenly between our eight Legends or however many JSA members, we really want to focus on individual storylines of two or three characters, and let the other characters recede into the background knowing that they’ll get a big episode the next week. Now that we know everybody, we want to really dig deeper. We want to give Stein and Jax their own episode. We want to give Nate his own episode. We want to give Sara and Darhk their own episode. It’s okay if somebody is light in one, knowing that the spotlight will hit them in the next.

DC Character Art--ObsidianHow awesome is it that you’re getting Lance Henriksen on your show as Obsidian?

He’s half Norwegian and so am I, so I feel like we’re going to bond. As I said in my letter to try to encourage him to take the role, I was like “you have been in three of my top ten movies. I mean, you were in The Right Stuff.” Yeah.

In the comic books, Todd (Obsidian) is gay. Is he going to be gay on the series?

Yeah. That’s certainly our intention. We haven’t written this episode yet, but yeah. That is [the intention].

- Phil Klemmer habla sobre la Season 2 (Part 2) (ksitetv):
Phil Klemmer habla sobre la Season 2
Por Craig Byrne, 25 Agosto 2016

The second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is headed our way on Thursday, October 13, and recently, we spoke with the show’s Executive Producer, Phil Klemmer, for some hints on what we can expect from Season 2 of The CW series, which will bring the legendary Justice Society of America into the mix as well as an ancestor of the Vixen in the form of her grandmother, Amaya.

It sounds like the show will continue to feature some DC Comics favorites and for Season 2, the new ones will make the mix even better. As our interview was long, we’ve split this into two parts. Read the first part of our interview with Phil Klemmer here.

KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: Can you talk about how Mick Rory’s opinion of the others has changed?

Mick Rory Dominic PurcellPHIL KLEMMER: We never want to rehabilitate him fully, and we never want to take away his edge. He’s been widowed, effectively. Having lost his partner – the guy who basically called the shots…. I don’t know if Mick knows where he belongs. It’s not like he can go back to Central City in 2016, but he doesn’t really belong on the ship, either, and so there is sort of simmering resentment. Snart sacrificed himself for this team and this purpose that Rory doesn’t fully believe in, and now, he’s going to punish the team just by staying. He’s like “you guys took my partner from me. Now you have to deal with me, because I don’t know where else I belong.”

What can you say about the new additions to the show for Season 2?

Nate Heywood [Nick Zano] is the first non-superhero [on the show]; the fact that we inherited all of these characters from other shows was great, because everybody wanted to watch our show; the downside of that was that there was no origin story to tell, because you knew who Ray Palmer was. You know who Sara Lance was. We want to meet a guy that nobody knows; in fact, who doesn’t even know that he is destined to become a superhero, because that gives you the first act of the Spider-Man movie. Tobey Maguire was like “Oh my God! I can do this! But I’m not great at doing it! And oh, I’m using it for selfish purposes, but should I use it for good?” You want a neophyte; a guy who’s been dropped into this world from the regular world, to point out the absurdity and the fun, so that was why we wanted to have Nate become a superhero within Season 2.

And then with Amaya [Maisie Richardson-Sellers], we wanted somebody who came from a different generation; we wanted people who force our Legends to look at themselves in a different light.

What era is Amaya from, exactly?

She’s from the Forties. She’s from the Golden Age of the JSA. She’s the “greatest generation.” She is of the JSA that stopped Hitler. It’s like having a grandfather who got off a landing vehicle at Normandie, and I’m trying to complain to him about “my latte is too cold,” and he’s just like “oh yeah?”

Kendra can help you with that.

Yeah! [Laughs]

With the JSA, are we only going to see them in the 1940s, or is there a team that exists now?

That is going to be part of our season-long mystery that will have a strong intersection with the Legion of Doom. We didn’t just bring them in because we thought it would be cool; they are tied up deeply into the DNA of our season-long mystery and our struggle with the Legion of Doom.

What’s the over/under on us seeing a floating Darth Vader helmet for the Legion of Doom?

That’s very slim.

Wentworth Miller has a lot of other projects going on in addition to his multi-show contract. Will you all be able to successfully weave him in without too many conflicts?

Absolutely. I was more worried for Dom [Dominic Purcell], because Dom went from us to Prison Break, straight into this, with zero break, but the dude’s a tank.

What can you say to sell the season to someone who might have dropped off during Season One and they might need some convincing?

[Episode] 201 is effectively a new pilot. That’s really the joy of this show; it was never designed to be the traditional network television [model], which is the running-in-place, sleight of hand trick. When we blew up the Vanishing Point, we blew up the conceit of Season 1. I’ll just say as writers, it’s such a joy writing the second season, because it feels so fresh and new, and full of all of the things we love.

I’m sure we’ll do the exact same thing at the end of this season. It is like a semi-anthology show. It’s not meant to be the same characters, or the same stakes, or the same conceit; it’s built to change. It is the sort of show that who knows how many seasons we go, but by the time we get to Season Five or the seventh season, it will have nothing in common. It’s fun.

Does Rip Hunter know his purpose, now that everything involving the Time Masters and Vanishing Point are over?

The thing about Rip is [that] we gave him a really heavy, heavy backstory. We killed his family, we put him in charge of saving the world, we then had the institution that he had sworn his allegiance to prove corrupt… and Arthur Darvill is a really, really fun guy. We want to just unburden him so we can access other aspects of himself as a performer. But yeah… what do you do after you’ve saved the world? It’s a really interesting question, and we want to see that version of Rip who is trying to figure out who he is.

The official description for Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 reads “a mystery looms: the fate of former Captain Rip Hunter.” What’s that all about?

The interesting thing for us to explore is that Rip was clearly the glue that was holding our team together. It’s like herding cats, and how do you herd cats when you’ve lost your Captain? The thing I will say about Season Two, it’s much more democratic. Whether Rip’s there or not, the Legends have a bit of swagger. They’ve saved the friggin’ world. They never listened to Rip in the first place, but now, they’re like “You know what? You’re not the boss of me! We have our own notions about how this should function!” It’s not a monarchy here, and Rip is certainly not King onboard the ship.

“Captain Rip Hunter” has always had a little asterisk beside it. I will say that by Season 2, that asterisk is a lot bigger.

Marc Guggenheim sobre la Season 2 de ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, compartiendo personajes, la Legion of Doom y más
por Christina Radish 22 Agosto, 2016

When Legends of Tomorrow returns for Season 2 on The CW on October 13th, the defeat of the immortal villain Vandal Savage and the corrupt Time Masters who conspired with him has left the team scattered throughout time. Once reunited, the Legends must continue their new mission to protect the timeline from unusual changes to history that can spawn potentially catastrophic consequences, all while clashing with foes from the past and present, to save the world from a mysterious new threat.

While at The CW portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour, executive producer Marc Guggenheim spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about where things are headed in Season 2, what’s next for the core team of Legends, wanting to explore more than one big bad, sharing characters among the interconnected series, the Legion of Doom, and the Justice Society of America. Be aware that there are some spoilers.

Collider: What can you say about where things are headed in Season 2? After everything that happened in the first season, do things feel totally wide open?

MARC GUGGENHEIM: Oh, totally! The show has so many challenges, and certainly one of them has been that the show can be anything, so what’s it gonna be? That’s one of the reasons why we approach the season by figuring out, what is the team’s mission statement? What is the raison d’être of the show? Once you have that structure, that does help narrow your focus. We kind of knew what we wanted to do. We planted the seeds for this, at the end of last season, when in the season finale, Rip said, “The Time Masters are gone. Someone else needs to protect history.” The Legends appointed themselves because we knew we wanted them to basically be acting as time cops. That’s fundamentally what they’re doing, and that structure, while loose, helps focus us.

You had one mission and one big bad in Season 1. Did you want to bring in more and expand the world, in that way?

GUGGENHEIM: The thing for us was that we wanted to come up with a framework that would allow us to not focus on one big bad. As a result, Season 2 of Legends is a lot more the way that Arrow and The Flash have always been designed. There is a season-long mythology and a season-long big bad that we’re building up to, but unlike Season 1 of Legends, it’s not where you’re starting. It’s something that slowly unfolds, and there’s an element of mystery to it. In that sense, it’s a lot more like Arrow and The Flash are.

Where is your core team at now?

GUGGENHEIM: When we pick up with them, it’s six months later and they’ve been policing time for six months. Everyone is in a little bit of a different place. Sara has a secret agenda that relates to the death of her sister on Arrow last year. Rip is a little lighter. He’s no longer as burdened by the death of his wife and son. Ray is really enjoying being a time cop. He’s the one who aspires the most to be a hero, and he really likes this new gig that they have. Jax has come into his own, as the engineer and chief mechanic of the Waverider. He’s carved out a place for himself on the team that’s separate and apart from his relationship with Stein. Stein has become the theoretician of the team. And Rory is basically just trying to white-knuckle his way through the whole experience. He cannot, for the life of himself, figure out what he’s doing, as a member of a superhero team.

Mick Rory seemed to be the one most surprised by the fact that he could actually fit in, in some way, with this team, and that he might actually even like them.

GUGGENHEIM: Oh, absolutely! That’s the fun thing. This year, we want him to fall in love with someone and be like, “What are feelings?!” He’s so much fun. He’s fun to write, and Dominic [Purcell] is obviously really enjoying playing him. I think Rory ends up stealing a lot of the scenes that he’s in.

How cool is it to have people like John Barrowman, Wentworth Miller and Katie Cassidy, who you can move around the board, but at the same time, how challenging is it to figure out when they can go where?

GUGGENHEIM: It’s a little challenging because we have to work around their personal schedules, and obviously there needs to be good communication among all the shows, so we’re not double booking them. No one has ever done a four-show universe. That’s totally unprecedented. The ability to move cast around that way is also unprecedented. The thing that we all really enjoy about it is that that’s the way it works in the comic books. The comic books are one large shared universe, and characters move back and forth between the different books. It’s fun to do the same thing with different shows.

Is that a point that you’d always hoped you’d get to, or are you surprised that you’re able to pull something like that off?

GUGGENHEIM: I don’t think there’s a day that doesn’t go by that we’re not surprised. When this all started with Arrow, we were surprised that we ended up doing the number of superheroes that we did, in the first season. We knew we were eventually going to do Deathstroke. We didn’t think we’d do Deathstroke in Season 1. We had no clue we were going to do Huntress, as early as Episode 6. We didn’t think we’d bring Roy Harper into Season 1. We ended up introducing a lot more characters, a lot sooner than we ever anticipated. It’s gratifying and mystifying, at the same time.

Viewers really loved the dynamic between Leonard Snart and Sara Lance, in Season 1. What can you say about who Captain Cold will be now?

GUGGENHEIM: We really loved that dynamic, too. It was so much fun. We’re glad we had a chance to get them to kiss before Leonard died. This Legion of Doom thing will be an interesting spin. It will make a very challenged relationship even more challenged.

What’s it going to be like with all of the different teams in play, from the Legends to the Legion of Doom to the Justice Society of America?

GUGGENHEIM: The way we’ve been handling it is that you’re not going to see all three teams in one episode. We’re not going to cram everyone together. We would have a lot of people. We want it to not feel like an overwhelming amount of story. One of the things we did last year was try to give every character on the Waverider a storyline, in every episode, and it made the episodes too dense. So, this year, we’re doing what we call a roving spotlight. It will be like, “This is the episode that focuses on Ray and Nate and Rory,” or “This is the episode that focuses on Sara and Amaya and Jax.” Everyone is still in the episode, but not everyone is getting a storyline.

For the viewers not familiar with the comics, what is the Justice Society of America and how are they different, as a team?

GUGGENHEIM: Basically, the JSA in the comics and in the show is the world’s first superhero team, and imagine a team of superheroes made up of the greatest generation. They basically function as this mirror that we hold up to the Legends, and they force the Legends to rethink the way they do thinks. The JSA are a bunch of people who really do things right. They’re coordinated, they get along, and they have a leader. They turn sharp corners. It’s fun to play with that dynamic. The Legends and the JSA are like oil and water.

The four shows sharing the same universe have great strong female characters. What will this Vixen add to that?

GUGGENHEIM: I think the thing that she adds is her perspective as someone from the 1940s. She’s someone who is a lot more straight-laced, at first, than the rest of our Legends. The way we describe it is like someone from IBM going to work, in the early days, at Google and being like, “Why do I need to ride around on a bicycle? Where are the offices?” She’s a humorous fish-out-of-water, but really, really tough, in her own right.

As someone who is totally unfamiliar with the comics, I’m looking forward to seeing all of these new additions really shake things up for the Legends.

GUGGENHEIM: My favorite fans of the shows are the people who are not comic book fans. The truth of the matter is that a wildly successful comic book today sells 80,000 copies, but 80,000 viewers does not keep any show on the air. None of these shows exist without people who are not fans of the comics. We’re not burying you in backstory and the minutiae of who these characters are.

When you think about this whole world that you’ve had a hand in creating, what are you most proud of having been able to pull off?

GUGGENHEIM: I’ve gotta be honest, I don’t credit myself with doing that. Because Greg [Berlanti] and Andrew [Kreisberg] have done The Flash and now Supergirl, I give them the credit for creating the universe. I’m proud that we were able to launch Arrow and have it not suck, and in that not sucking, it created opportunities, not just for The Flash, but it opened up the world of television. So, I can’t really take credit for the universe. I really think that’s Greg and Andrew’s baby. But I am very, very proud that we opened up television for this new era of superhero shows. The sky’s the limit, and that’s really a lot of fun.
