- De 'Smallville' a 'Lucifer': La Evolución de Tom Welling (THR):
De 'Smallville' a 'Lucifer': La Evolución de Tom Welling
Por Sydney Bucksbaum - 29 Sept, 2017 8:00am PT

After spending a decade playing the boy who would become Superman, the actor is finally stepping back into the spotlight for his first TV role in six years.

Tom Welling still remembers the exact moment he realized that he was truly done with Smallville.

After 10 years and 217 episodes following a young Clark Kent as he evolved and finally embraced his destiny to become Superman, Welling got into his car and started driving from the Vancouver set all the way to his home in Los Angeles. The drive started off as any other — it was his tradition every season to make the days-long trek along the coast at the beginning and end of each season of The CW's superhero drama. But as he crossed the border back into the U.S. for the final time after wrapping the series finale, a strange and exciting feeling washed over him.

"I just remember finally crossing the border and being like, 'I'm free!'" he tells The Hollywood Reporter with a big laugh. "I definitely remember that final moment crossing the border, thinking to myself, 'This is a new chapter.'"

That new, post-Smallville chapter ended up spanning six years as Welling took a break from working in TV. This fall marks the end of that chapter and the beginning of yet another as he returns to the small screen for his first TV role since Smallville ended in 2011 with Fox's devilish drama Lucifer.

"It wasn't so much returning to TV, what is was is being a part of this show itself," Welling says of what drew him back. His former Smallville colleague Greg Beeman, who now directs on the third-year drama, reached out to Welling and convinced him to accept the new role with simple advice: "'Don't over think it. Just do the show.' And he was so right."

Welling's former boss, Smallville co-creator Al Gough, isn't surprised that Lucifer is what brought his former star back to TV, noting that both he and Welling watch the series.

"You do a show for 10 seasons, and it's an action-adventure series, that's a lot of work. It takes a lot out of you. He gave it his all so he wanted to recharge," Gough says. "By going into a show like Lucifer which is an established hit on a big network, it's a great way to get your feet wet again but it's not all on your shoulders. It allows him to do something different and really distinguish himself from Clark." And to hear Welling tell it, the fact that Lucifer, like Smallville, is produced by Warner Bros. TV, "it's just icing on the cake."

Adds Gough, "It was the combination of the right show, the right time, the right network."

While Welling never intended to take an official break from TV, a full decade of filming in another country meant that when Smallville ended, he needed to reconnect with his life. To that end, the Los Angeles-based set of Lucifer also gives him a chance to Welling to have his cake and eat it too.

"Ten years being away from family and friends, it does take a toll on you," Welling says. "I had to go off and do some things that I couldn't do when I was on the show and that took a little while. I slowly started to get back into the idea and started getting passionate about getting back to work. I'm just lucky for this opportunity to come through because now I'm living in L.A., we shoot in L.A., and it's just a completely different experience for me where I don't feel so isolated. I feel like I'm a part of my own life and a part of the show."

Getting to sleep in his own bed after a long day on set is something that Welling has never experienced before, and he couldn't be happier about it. "I'm trying to just soak this up as much as I can because at this point, it's really only for this season," he says. "I'm trying to enjoy it because it may not ever be this good again."

Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson, meanwhile, still can't believe the DC Comics-inspired series managed to bring Welling back to the small screen.

"Tom has been on the list for a lot of years as one of the names you want to get [for casting TV roles]," Henderson says. "When we were casting this part we were like, 'Sure, let's try for Tom Welling. We're not going to get Tom Welling but let's try!' To our delight, he was in."

Henderson notes that his initial call with Welling and executive producer Ildy Modrovich to discuss the Lucifer role was unlike any other. "I talked a lot about how I had seen every episode of Smallville and knew how good of an actor he was, and I really wanted to get him outside of his box," Henderson says. "As writers just getting started, you write spec scripts for shows to prove you can write, and the first spec I ever wrote was for Smallville. That was a script I got a lot of meetings off of, so when we first talked to Tom on the phone, I started by thanking him for keeping the show on the air for 10 years because it kept my script alive for that long."

Both Henderson and Modrovich credit Welling's Lucifer character, Marcus Pierce, as being the main reason the actor agreed to join the series. "What really grabbed him is that this wasn't going to be Superman, this wasn't going to be a wholesome Clark Kent character," Modrovich says. "This is going to go darker and he's a threat to our heroes in a lot of different ways. And he thought that was great. He's not this all-American, kind, Clark Kent that he was on Smallville. He comes across as, if I may, as kind of a dick. When you first meet him, you're like, 'Wow, that guy is kind of an asshole.' Tom is so completely charming and lovable, so he's having fun with it. It's saucy."

That onscreen shift also reflects an offscreen change in Welling since Smallville went off the air. "Now he has such a different energy and he's grown into himself," he says. "I think his fans will be really surprised by what they see now. I think he wanted to flex different muscles after Smallville, and that's why our show was so appealing. We're a little bit of everything — we're a comedy, we're a drama, we're a procedural. He liked that because he can play with all these different toys."

First appearing in the Lucifer season three premiere, the highly respected and lauded police lieutenant Pierce comes into the LAPD to shake things up professionally and personally, specifically for Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German).

"My character is more of a straight man role," Welling says. "He's very earnest and has a bigger agenda. That was fun because I'm playing against what Tom [Ellis] is doing. There's comedy in that. Throughout the season, you'll learn more about my character and who he is and there will be an evolution, well, actually a couple [different evolutions]. But by playing against the comedy, to me that's hilarious."

Of course, there's more to Pierce than what he first seems — and that, too, is a stark contrast to Welling's time as Clark on Smallville.

"He knows more about what's going on. Clark never really knew what was going on, he always had to figure out what was going on, that's for sure," Welling says with a laugh. "Pierce is actually pulling more strings than you even know. He looks a little different than Clark, a bit older. He's not who he seems when he comes into town. The episode I'm working on now there is a reveal of who he is and what his intentions are. He's here to throw a wrench in the wheel."

While Welling acted in a few movies during his time away from TV, it took the actor — who also executive-produced The CW's Hellcats — a moment to re-acclimate.

"I was there, the very first take he had with Lauren," Henderson recalls. "He walks up to her and she starts blathering and he's supposed to interrupt her. We do our first take, he walks over, she starts blathering, and then she pauses and he's just looking at her."

"They call cut and Lauren is like, 'Huh, a little rusty there, Welling?'" the actor says with a laugh. "That was my first take, so it was nice to break the tension with that. After that, it broke the ice."

It was that attitude that surprised many on the Lucifer set. "He's very down-to-earth and hilarious," Modrovich says. Henderson agrees, calling Welling — who boasts an impressive Christopher Walken impression — a "goofball." And it's that sense of humor that Gough recalls the most about his time with Welling on the Smallville set. "That's not really a side you saw as much on Smallville because Clark was always very earnest, serious and saving the world, dealing with all of those villains. He was never going to be the acerbic guy who's delivering the zinger," he says. "But Tom is very funny, very sharp, so I'm hoping that's a side you'll get to see now that he's doing this new show."

Along with his sense of humor, the Lucifer showrunners were also surprised by the 6-foot-3 Welling's physical stature. "We had to get him a bigger motorcycle, because the motorcycle we had chosen for him looked too small on him." Adds Modrovich adds with a laugh: "Same thing as choosing a gun for him! It looked like a tiny little water gun in his hands so we had to get him a bigger gun so it wouldn't look silly."

Welling's towering height is actually what helped him get his career started almost two decades ago. Discovered at a party, Welling started out as a model for brands including Calvin Klein. That left him feeling unfulfilled, however, so when the chance to guest-star on the CBS legal drama Judging Amy came along in 2000, he jumped in with both feet. Welling played star Amy Brenneman's younger love interest Rob Meltzer for an extended stint in season two, and Brenneman recalls just how green Welling was when he stepped onto a TV set for the very first time.

"He just hadn't acted before," Brenneman says. "I thought, 'OK, he's such a beautiful young man, but we'll see.' And he just had this natural ease, which, for this show, the main thing we had to do was connect, and we did immediately. He was funny and I was amazed at his ability to stay relaxed when that big old eye of the camera is on you."

The actress recalls Welling being a "generous and complimentary" co-star.

"In the bathtub scenes, you're shot so it looks like you have nothing on from the shoulders down and I had on this battleship gray maternity bathing suit and we had to do an extra panel for my pregnancy," she recalls. "I felt really self-conscious so I grabbed these men's shorts and I looked so unsexy. And he was just like, 'Oh you look so beautiful.' He was the greatest guy of all time."

Looking back on his time with Brenneman on Judging Amy, Welling's first instinct is to laugh at his inexperience ("I really didn't know what I was doing!") but recalls the lessons he learned from his co-star with fondness. "Amy really took me under her wing," he says. "The way she treated and talked to people, when I moved onto a show where I was the lead, I knew I was going to treat people with respect and I'm going to be professional and on time. Those were all things that I saw her do."

Indeed, Gough recalls Welling's work ethic from his time on Smallville. "When you're No. 1 on the call sheet, you set the tone for the cast and on set," he recalls. "He really grew into that role. He was a young actor, his first big series, yes it's an ensemble show but he was playing Clark Kent so it all revolves around you. It ended up being a dream with that cast since it came from the top down."

As one of very few people who knew Welling before he became Clark Kent, Brenneman actually remembers the moment his life changed forever. "I'll always remember sitting on set and him talking about this audition and if he could play Clark Kent," she says. "And I told him, 'Don't get your hopes up. The business is hard.' Cut to me seeing posters [of Smallville with Welling] and I was like, 'Oh OK, or that could happen!'"

While Welling was still a relative newcomer in Hollywood, Brenneman knew early on that Welling was primed to break out. "He's a sane, hard-working, kind person, and coupled with his physical appeal, somebody was going to snap him up," she says. "We just happened to be the first one."

It wasn't long until another producer realized that, too. Smallville started its international search for a young Clark Kent, looking at actors all over the U.S., Canada, Australia, in the U.K. Gough remembers when the team was going through a stack of headshots and Welling's came up. But initially, he wouldn't come in to audition for Clark Kent because at that time, there wasn't even a pilot script written.

"In January of 2001, we finally had the script and we called him up to come into the room and read," Gough says. "At the time, this was all pre-Marvel, the last iteration of Superman was Lois & Clark, the last iteration of Batman was Batman & Robin. There were a lot of preconceived notions about what a young Superman should be, but Tom still came in and read the script. He really liked it, we talked about 'no flights, no tights,' and then he auditioned with Kristin Kreuk who we had already cast [as Clark's love interest Lana Lang]. They were really magic in the room."

Welling's inexperience at the time — along with his "ridiculously handsome" looks, according to Gough — helped bring "a real warmth and a real sincerity" to Clark.

"For Clark Kent in high school, that was exactly what we were looking for," Gough says. "When Tom came in and read, you knew it. We captured lightning in a bottle because not only was he great, but he looked like Clark Kent. With DC Comics, there was a 'likeness clause.' The actor we cast had to look like Clark Kent. We couldn't cast a long-haired blonde guy. The unicorn had to walk in. Tom for us was that unicorn."

When Welling finally accepted the role, which came down to him and Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, he felt as nervous as he had when he first stepped onto the Judging Amy set. But those nerves actually helped him get into character.

"The good thing about what I did on Smallville was I played a character who had no idea what he was doing at the beginning," he says. "In many ways, myself as an actor, I didn't have much experience. Over the course of 10 years, Clark got to know himself better, he got to know what he was capable of, understood his purpose, and I did too. I grew a lot. That was the perfect role for me."
In that time on Smallville Welling grew up personally and professionally. Gough helped guide him along that journey by creating an environment where all the young stars were allowed to do their best work.

"We created this combination of structure and freedom where they were all allowed to flourish," Gough says. "And we tried to cast in the older roles, the parents, John Schneider, Annette O'Toole, John Glover, we tried to really surround them with pros who they could also learn from. That's the best acting school you could have."

And then in season four, Gough pushed Welling to take on a new role: director. "He was nervous about it," Gough remembers, but Welling eventually moved behind the camera to direct in season five.

"When I stepped onto the set of Smallville for the first time, I was not thinking about directing or producing," Welling says with a laugh. "I was just trying to hit my mark and not screw up too bad. Over the years, I saw what directors were doing and how they could affect the set, and I thought it was like another language I could learn. The same way went with producing. I just wanted to learn everything I could while I was there."

Welling considers his years on Smallville as his college and grad school as far as the industry goes. "I got to learn on-the-job training for 10 years," he says. "As I go forward, I definitely want to develop shows with Warner Bros. and I want to direct and continue to produce. I love telling stories and creating opportunities that allow other people to follow their craft as well. Becoming an executive producer on Smallville and directing episodes, I saw more of my potential and where I could take the tools I'm learning and how to apply them."

It's a role that comes naturally to him. Gough remembers being on set in Vancouver when Smallville first introduced Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort) on the show.

"I remember watching the scenes, and every time I'd see something and I would want to go and give her a note, I'd literally hear Tom on the mic giving her that note in a very nice, warm, constructive way," Gough says. "I looked at James Marshall who was our producer/director and I go, 'You know who the best director on the set is right now? It’s Tom and we should just leave.'"

In the six years since Smallville wrapped, Gough made sure to keep in touch with Welling. Through emails and lunches to catch up, Gough kept reminding Welling that he belonged on TV.

"I have always encouraged him to come back and do television, preferably something we could do together again," he says with a laugh. "He's really one of the good guys in this business. I'm super excited he's back doing television. I've told him before, 'You have many hit shows in your future once you decide to make the return.' I think he's a total TV star."

But Gough understood why Welling had to take a step back for a while. "His first big role was an iconic role and went on for 10 years," he says. "As Christopher Reeve used to call it, 'You need to escape the cape.'"

Welling notes that there was never any doubt in his mind that he'd eventually return to television. What certainly helped pave the way was just how much the industry has changed since Smallville wrapped.

"There are so many cool things going on on TV right now, whether it's cable or broadcast. There is so much opportunity to be a part of really great shows," he says. "In the back of my mind maybe I always knew I'd be working again in this medium. I remember, during my 10 years on Smallville, noticing that there was more of sense of TV vs. film, whether you were a TV actor or a movie actor. Ten years later, that went away. Now with the way people access content on their phones, on their iPads and computers, people don't really care as long as they get to see you. Fans don't really compare TV vs. film as much as they used to."

And that's allowing Welling to have the most fun he's ever had in his career on Lucifer. He stops mid-thought to laugh as his co-star German passes by him on set.

"She just drove by listening to the X-Files on a Bluetooth speaker on a bike with a huge flag and bedazzled things all over it," he says. "Everybody on the cast, except for me, they all have these bicycles they ride around on set. It's hilarious."

So is he going to join in on the fun and get a bike of his own? "You know, I think it's a character choice," he says. "Everybody has them, so I'm not going to get one. Pierce wouldn't do that, he'd do his own thing. So I will too."

Lucifer season three premieres Monday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. on Fox.

“Smallville” star Tom Welling is soaring back to TV six years after the Superman origin series ended in 2011.

Welling, 40, has joined the supernatural Fox drama “Lucifer” as Marcus Pierce, a no-nonsense lieutenant in the LAPD homicide unit where the manipulative title character — the devil himself, played by Tom Ellis — serves as a consultant. The new role is a far cry from the emo version of Clark Kent he played for 10 years.

“Marcus comes off as very polar opposite, tonally, to everyone else on the show,” Welling told The Post by phone from LA. “My character comes in and shakes things up. It felt really exciting to me, like someone I hadn’t played before.”

Here’s what else Welling — a Putnam Valley, NY, native — had to say about his new character and post-“Smallville” life.

Since “Smallville” ended, you’ve run a production company and been in a few movies, but this is your return to acting on TV. Did you intentionally step away from the series grind?
Yeah, I was happy to take a break. I’m not complaining, but filming in Vancouver for 10 years, away from pretty much everybody you know — I wanted to take some time to do the things I couldn’t do. I used to drive up from LA at the beginning of the season and then 10 months later drive back down. And I remember crossing the border for the last time, getting back to the United States and being like, “This is a new beginning; this is also gonna be great.”

You were already a fan of “Lucifer” before you joined the cast. What did you like about it?
The tone — the procedural-slash-comedy and the lightheartedness. Especially the way Lucifer operates, the idea that he gives people choices and opportunities that shed a light on the deep, dark secrets and desires they have. It delves into the human condition of, “If I really could have what I wanted, what would that mean?”

Pierce is an older character with graying temples. Are those real, or courtesy of the show’s hairstylist?
I want to say it’s not real, but, no, it’s been a few years since “Smallville.” You know, a little older, a little wiser, a little more serious. Maybe a few more pounds. That was definitely a character choice — I had to gain weight.

Did you keep any souvenirs from the “Smallville” set?
I think I have some posters. You know, [Michael] Rosenbaum [who played Lex Luthor] would steal props that weren’t even his; he’s really the collector. Some day I may break into his house. I guarantee you he has a bunch of souvenirs of Clark’s. I picture him running around in the red Clark jacket or something.

When Lucifer returns for season 3, Tom Welling will make his debut as Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling), a devilishly charming police lieutenant who is also a potential love interest for Chloe (Lauren German). How will Lucifer (Tom Ellis) feel about that? Probably not great, to be honest, but Welling is loving it. Below, the Smallville alum dishes on why he chose Lucifer to make his TV return. (Read our interview with Welling about not really suiting up as Superman on Smallville here.)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was it about Lucifer that made you want to return to TV?
TOM WELLING: So this is going to sound cheesy, but it’s true. I had been in discussions with Fox on two other projects this year that didn’t work out — for one, I was too young and the other one I just wasn’t right for. On a Monday morning, I get a call from my agent and they say, “We have an offer for you for the show called Lucifer to do 10 episodes,” and I was like, “Okay, well, when does it start?” and they said, “Friday.” I was like, “Whoa, hold on a second,” and they go, “But, but, but, it shoots in L.A.,” which is good because I live in L.A. Having spent so much time in Vancouver, the idea of traveling to me isn’t a priority — in a sense, it’s luxury problems.

Anyway, shortly after I got a call from a very dear friend of mine, Greg Beeman, who was our showrunner on Smallville for many years and had directed episodes of Lucifer, and he goes, “I hear that your name’s in the mix to be on Lucifer. I know you, I’ve worked on the show, you’re going to love it, don’t overthink it.” So then I binge-watched about six episodes of the show, because I was familiar with the show, but they were like, “Take a look at these six that we recommend for you to watch, these are our favorites,” and I watched them all, and Wednesday morning the conversation was, “I don’t want to do 10 episodes,” and they said, “Well, you have to do 10, it’s 10 or nothing.” I said, “I want to do more, I want to do 15,” and so we signed on for 15 episodes, because I like it that much, and having met the cast and the crew they’re so much fun. They have a good time, they get their work done, they’re professional, but they’re enjoying themselves. I like the show, the show’s fun. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but they solve bit crimes and their issues and stuff like that. So I don’t know if that answers your question, but it at least gives you a jumping-off point about how it happened.

Tell us about Marcus as a character.
Well, Marcus, by design, you’re not going to know too much about him. The cliché is you’re going to have to watch to see who he is in the end and it’ll be worth it. At first, he’s a disrupter. At the end of last season, the characters of Lucifer started to get along maybe a little too much and they told me they wanted to bring somebody in to mix it up. He’s definitely going to mix things up between Lucifer and Lauren’s character, Decker, as far as like a love interest possibility sort of thing. But what you’ll find at the end of the season is he is much more of a character and you’re never going to guess who he is, but he’s definitely somebody that Lucifer is going to realize is maybe older than Lucifer, if that makes any sense. I’ll tease that. He’s not God. He’s not God, for sure. He’s not that, but he’s something that you’ll find is very much on par, if not greater, than what Lucifer is.

The description of your character intimated that Lucifer and Marcus had a lot in common. They’re both devilishly charming.
Well, I just did a scene this morning where Decker literally calls me a d—k, so that’s at least how I start out, and that she’s taking the brunt of my d—kish ways. I start out maybe one way, but hopefully I can bring some charm to him later on.

How similar or different is he from Lucifer and how does that cause them to butt heads?
The way that I see it is Lucifer, in some ways, comes in like, [in a mock British accent] “Hey, I’m Lucifer, I’m crazy, and I’m more powerful, I’m the devil, tell me what your desires are.” And Marcus is like, “Yeah, okay, anyway, let’s get the work done.” It’s taking the air out of the room, I think would be the difference. Where Lucifer brings it, he brings the energy to the room, my character sucks it out.

So he’s a little more straight-laced then?
I think so. Yeah, maybe a different goal than Lucifer has, a different global objective as far as the desire from a character point of view. He’s looking for something different than what Lucifer is looking for.

Can you say whether Marcus is good or bad?
Well, every character thinks he’s good, you know what I mean? He’s not necessarily doing bad things, to answer your question. He’s not hurting people necessarily, but definitely if somebody gets in his way, he’ll take them out.

What’s more fun for you to play, the hero or the villain?
Well, right now, the villain. A friend of mine was asking me about the character and he was like, “Oh, so he’s a d—k?” and I was like, “He’s not just a d—k.” He goes, “No, but I see why you’d want to play that character because he’s very much different than what you’ve played for so many years,” and in some ways, that is true. He’s got a different energy, he’s got a different delivery, he’s not so much like open-eyed as far as like, “Oh my gosh, what’s happening?” He’s like “All right, this is what I’m going to do, this is what I’m going to make happen.” So it’s a different energy.

Was that part of the reason that you wanted to come back to TV, doing the complete opposite of Clark Kent?
I definitely didn’t want to play Clark Kent again. The great thing about Clark is he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with what he had and his abilities. This character very much knows what he’s capable of and knows what he wants to do and knows how to do it. So as much fun as that is to play, it wasn’t necessarily because of Clark that I chose this character. I think it was a number of things, it was the cast, the subject matter, the show, the showrunners, the Greg Beeman recommendation, the location. It was so many more factors than just “I don’t want to play Clark again,” but I’d be lying if I was saying that I’m not enjoying playing something very different for sure.

What can you tease of the dynamic between Chloe and Marcus?
Well, hopefully it just puts everybody on their heels a little bit. At first, it’s not so obvious that there might be an attraction between Decker and Pierce, but it’s hinted in other ways. It’s television, so of course there’s going to be that. I mean, we all expect a little bit of that. But I think wherein most shows somebody just comes in and all of a sudden it’s like, “Oh, they meet at a bar and there’s a new love interest,” it’s almost like the reverse where hopefully you’re not going to see the beginning. It’s not that they’re gazing in each other’s eyes at the beginning. If anything, he’s a very authoritative, demanding boss that just wants results and doesn’t really care what she has to say about anything other than what the case is and what’s going on. The scene this morning was, “Decker, where are we on the case?” And she says, “Yeah, we’re doing this.” I’m like, “Oh, you don’t have any suspects in custody yet?” And she goes, “No,” and his response is, “I thought you’d be further along” and just walks past her. She’s kind of like, “What the f—k, why is he such a d—k?” Things may or may not heat up.

Is this strategic? Maybe he has it out for Lucifer so getting close to Decker is part of his game plan?
Maybe. [Laughs] You’re not sure. The big question that even I had in talking to the showrunners was who is this guy and why is he here? Their answer was awesome. I can’t tell you because it ruins everything, but he’s definitely there for a very specific reason and Lucifer is part of that, Decker is a part of that, but you’ll find out that it’s something even bigger.

Can he be trusted? And does he suspect or know what Lucifer is?
Well, we did a scene last week where my character shows up in Lucifer’s apartment and Lucifer goes, “Oh, finally somebody actually believes that I am who I say I am, I’m the devil himself,” and Pierce says, “No, actually, I’m not crazy, I have no idea why you prance around in that and call yourself the devil, but anyway,” and just sort of moves on. So you don’t know how much Pierce knows or doesn’t know, but you get a sense that he needs a little something from everybody to get what he wants.

Lucifer returns Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Jefes de "Lucifer" adelantan un nuevo misterio en la S3
Por Natalie Abrams - 29 Sept, 2017 a las 8:59am EDT

After mysteriously getting his wings back in the season 2 finale, Lucifer (Tom Ellis) will be suffering an identity crisis this year, making him even more dangerous.

“It’s really Lucifer exploring who he is, what it means to be the devil and in doing so, embracing his devilish side more than ever,” executive producer Joe Henderson says, promising that Lucifer will still keep his promise of revealing the truth to Chloe (Lauren German) in the premiere. “It just might not go as smoothly now that he has his wings,” EP Ildy Modrovich adds.

Making matters more complicated is the interestingly timed introduction of a potential new love interest for Chloe, Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling), a devilishly charming police lieutenant. Could his arrival have anything to do with Lucifer suddenly getting his wings back? Below, the Lucifer bosses tease the new mystery hanging over season 3:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where does the new season pick up?
ILDY MODROVICH: The standalone episodes that we made at the end of last year, we’re going to actually sprinkle them throughout, so we’re not going to just bang them out to begin with. They’re going to hopefully seem very seamless in their airing. Every time we air one, we pick up a thread from whatever it is and fold it into our ongoing story, so our new season picks up exactly pretty much two days after our last one ended. So Lucifer, when he wakes up in the desert with his wings, that’s where we start.

Is there anything you can tease about the unknown assailant who knocked Lucifer out?
MODROVICH: That’s really the mystery of the whole season, is who put his wings on? He thinks, of course, it’s his dad, but he believes that his dad has an emissary on Earth, because dad never gets his own hands dirty. He spends this season searching for the cause of his return of his wings. So the first episode is really centered around that. The mystery is who took Lucifer to the desert, and not who knocked him out and put him in the desert where he woke up with wings, and that’s where we start.
HENDERSON: Yeah, and at the end of the first episode, we get this first clue as to who this person might be, and realizing it might be a darker force than he’s encountered previously.

It’s Marcus, right? It’s totally Marcus.
HENDERSON: Totally Marcus. [Laughs]

What does it mean now that Lucifer has his wings again?
MODROVICH: He’s having an identity crisis. He doesn’t want what anybody tells him to do. He’s all about free will, so if God is taking his wings and throwing them out of heaven, he’s pissed off, but if God suddenly puts his wings back on, he’s pissed off. He’s nobody’s puppet, so he’s really having an identity crisis through most of the season. It’s up and down for him.

What themes will you guys be exploring this season?
HENDERSON: The big theme of the season is identity, and exploring the idea that Lucifer embraced the idea of being the Devil, but here he is with angel wings on his shoulders, and he feels like God is trying to tell him to be one thing. When the Devil is told to do one thing, he runs the other way hard, so it’s really Lucifer exploring who he is, what it means to be the Devil, and in doing so, embracing his devilish side more than ever.

Lucifer was planning to tell Chloe everything, but why would it be any different now? Why would she actually believe him now?
MODROVICH: Well, the main difference is he does have his wings back, and that takes center stage for him. At the very top of the season, he does find a moment to pick up with his promise, so you can tune in to that in the first episode. He made a promise at the end of season 2, and he’s going to honor that.
HENDERSON: Yeah. It just might not work out the way he had planned.
MODROVICH: Exactly. It just might not go as smoothly now that he has his wings.

Can everybody see them?
HENDERSON: Yes. Everyone can see them. That’s a very good question.
MODROVICH: Yes, if he were to whip them out…
HENDERSON: Which is very inappropriate, probably.

What are we going to be seeing for Decker this season?
HENDERSON: A big thrust of it is her trying to step away from identifying herself based just on Lucifer and trying to figure out what makes herself tick, and so part of it is “Well, is Lucifer my partner? Am I his partner? Or should I just focus on me being Detective Chloe Decker?” Also, part of it is putting herself back out there, moving on from her emotional attachment to Lucifer, and so when she first meets Marcus Pierce, he is very much someone that rubs her the wrong way, because he’s very much a no-nonsense, calling-it-like-it-is-guy, and he’s not much for social mores, if you will. What’s interesting is he also represents a lot of truth and justice and very much a lot of the things that draw Chloe to the side of law, so Pierce is very much the exact opposite of Lucifer, but also very similar, and so that duality is a big reason for the two of them to start coming together.
MODROVICH: And then of course Chloe, on her path to find her own identity, even though she’s attracted to Pierce at some point, she’s going to think, “Dang it, this would be number 3 in the workplace — I married Dan, I came close to dating my consultant, and of course, the feelings there that still are present, and now I’m going to date my Lieutenant? Oh, red light!” So she’s going to have to kind of contend with that.

So Tom Welling teased that Marcus may actually be older than Lucifer. What can you tease about who or what he is? [Editor’s note: Check back Monday for our full Q&A with Tom Welling!]
HENDERSON: I would say yeah, I think Pierce is probably like two years older than him, because Pierce has been around. He’s been a Lieutenant. He’s seen a lot, he’s seen it all, and so he’s more world weary, whereas Lucifer loves seeing everything new and is always excited about the next big surprise. So what you get is Lucifer being the eternal teenager and Pierce being the guy who’s been on every crime scene, has seen everything happen, so that’s a lot of the fun.
MODROVICH: Yeah, because even though Lucifer’s been around since the beginning of time, he’s only been on Earth five years.

When Tom teased that, it seemed like Marcus might not technically be human.
MODROVICH: Interesting.
HENDERSON: I’ll tell you what, Marcus Pierce is human.
MODROVICH: He’s very human. Yeah.

Tricia is sticking around as Charlotte, so what will we see her deal with in the wake of all she did last year?
MODROVICH: Well, in her missing time, if you will, Charlotte went somewhere, so there’s really only a few choices then, and one choice is very boring. [Laughs] She wasn’t the best person when she was on Earth. She wasn’t a great mom, she was helping criminals get free with zero guilt. She’s haunted by where she’s been, because for three months, she was hanging out in the bad place, so she doesn’t know if that was real, she doesn’t know was she in a walking coma? But she knows that she’s going to do everything she can not to go back.

Will we see mom’s other world that was created in the finale?
HENDERSON: Yeah, it’s funny. It’s something we talked about a lot. If we can figure out a way to make it work, we’d love to see it. We have no plans yet.
MODROVICH: In the comic book, there are like centaur people in this other world, and so it always comes down to that. Do we want to introduce the centaur people?
HENDERSON: I think that’s your pull quote right there: Centaur people. [Laughs]

Can you tease what we’ll be seeing for some of the other characters this season?
HENDERSON: Amenadiel went through a big crisis of faith in the last two seasons, and he realized that he kind of failed, and it really hit him in the face when learned that he’s actually God’s favorite son. So season 3 is him going, “I keep getting tested and I keep failing, so you know what, I’m going to pass these tests. I’m going to move forward. I have faith in my father again. I am going to be the son that is deserving of being the favorite.” But as it turns out, that’s a lot harder than it looks like, so we’re going to have some fun with a newly sort of confident Amenadiel getting punched in the face a lot.
MODROVICH: We like to call him Zenamen or Amenazen this year, because he’s trying to just chill and have faith as much as humanly possible. Then with Linda, since she went through the crazy trauma that she went through, because she’s a therapist, she thinks she knows how to handle trauma, but the problem is she doesn’t have somebody else on the other side of the couch, so she’s dealing with it herself at first, and she finally realizes she needs somebody to sit in the proverbial chair for her, so she seeks out an interesting partnership or friendship, new friendship, that I think will be very exciting. Then Maze is gone bounty hunting for the first part of the season, i.e. having her child and spending time with her new baby, but when she comes back, she’ll find her best friend with this new friend, so she’ll be very, very jealous of that because hey, Linda’s her best friend, so that will be fraught with drama.
HENDERSON: And poor Dan has to deal with the woman he really fell for back, but maybe not back, because she doesn’t seem to remember a single thing about him. We love torturing Kevin Alejandro. And we’ve got a great episode coming up where Ella and Lucifer go on a road trip to Vegas, where we not only get to have a lot of fun of the two of them together, but we also learn a little bit more about Ella and what makes her tick.

Lucifer returns Monday at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Showrunners de "Lucifer" revelan que el Diablo abrazará su lado oscuro esta temporada
Por Sadie Gennis - 29 Sept 2017

Since Lucifer began, the Devil (Tom Ellis) has generally been working on the side of good. But now that he has his angel wings back, Lucifer will be embracing his dark side in a way viewers haven't seen before.

Although this may seem counterintuitive, it makes perfect sense for Lucifer, who has always done the opposite of what has been expected of him. "He's a man who's all about free will and he does not like anything imposed upon him," co-showrunner Ildy Modrovich tells TV Guide. "He did not like being made the Devil and he does not like it when someone's telling him that he's an angel again."

"So when Lucifer gets the feeling his dad either wants him to be an angel again or feels like he's worthy of being an angel again, Lucifer decides that he has to be the Devil all the more," adds co-showrunner Joe Henderson.

But as Lucifer quickly learns, his wings weren't a gift from dear ol' dad; they were bestowed upon him by the Sinnerman, Lucifer's new foe who was behind his kidnapping in the Season 2 finale. So what does the Sinnerman want with Lucifer? And how will introduction of the Sinnerman -- not to mention the hot new police lieutenant, Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling) -- affect Lucifer's relationship with Chloe (Lauren German)? Henderson and Modrovich reveal everything you need to know about Season 3 below!

How does Lucifer feel about the fact that he has his wings back?
Ildy Modrovich: Well, not good! You know, he's a man who's all about free will and he does not like anything imposed upon him. So he did not like being made the Devil and he does not like it when someone's telling him that he's an angel again.
Joe Henderson: Whenever Lucifer feels like someone's telling him who he is or what he's supposed to do, he runs the other way.

Lucifer sees getting his wings back as punishment, but Amenadiel (DB Woodside) would like nothing more than to get his wings back. How does that imbalance affect their relationship?
Henderson: That's a big part of Amenadiel's journey this season because you're exactly right, his brother gets the one thing he wanted back and he has to deal with what that means and also come to the realization that maybe this is part of his task. That ... instead of failing like he did last year without realizing that he was the favorite son and having his wings fall, he's going to step up. He's going to be worthy of the favorite son name that his father bestowed on him.
Modrovich: It's never good for men to compare body parts. Especially brothers.

Speaking of comparing men. There is a new guy in Chloe's life this season, Marcus Pierce. How does he set himself apart from characters we've seen before?
Henderson: Well, he's a lot uglier.
Modrovich: We thought we had such a beautiful cast, we thought we'd add one very unattractive man. No, he's great. There is no one like him on the show. And what's great about Tom Welling on the show is that he's not doing anything you've seen him do before. He's not Clark Kent. He's got an edge to him. He's got a lot of secrets too. He's not "all you see is what you get." There's more to him than meets the eye.
Henderson: We've also never had an authority figure come in with our characters, so it's nice that they're used to doing things their way and Pierce comes in with a very different approach than they have. It's one Chloe responds to quite a bit. Pierce is very different from Lucifer. What [Pierce] says in a little, Lucifer says in a lot. He's the kind of guy who wants to get stuff done while Lucifer wants to play. And there's a lot about Pierce that Chloe really responds to because this is a guy who's closing cases and getting stuff done.
Modrovich: He's kind of all about the rules. He's by the book. It's what Joe said: he's somebody who likes the rules, who follows the rules. She's kind of an eternal adult and he's maybe even more so and she doesn't really have any adults in her life. He fills that role.
Henderson: She has Peter Pan in one hand and an adult in the other, and both appeal to her in different ways.

We know that Pierce eventually tells Lucifer that he knows about the Sinnerman and they team up to track him down. How much are we going to see them butt heads during this unlikely partnership?
Henderson: I think you hit it right on the target. The fun of it is going to be [seeing] these two characters with two very different agendas when it comes to this Sinnerman character -- can they work together? Will their agendas clash? At times their agendas will be together and at times they're going to have to face off. And that's the fun of it.

Is it just a coincidence that Pierce comes into Lucifer's life or does he know more about the celestial world than he lets on?
Henderson: I'll say one thing. Pierce is human, so he's not a celestial character. But he's definitely come here following the Sinnerman, which is the uniting factor between them.
Modrovich: He is human, but as I said earlier, there is more to him than meets the eye.

What makes the Sinnerman a different kind of antagonist than ones we've seen before?
Modrovich: He's a badass. But what you also find is that he does have a hidden history with some characters in our show that come out and Lucifer has to face off against.
Henderson: We look at him like a bizarre reflection of Lucifer. We learn in an upcoming episode that he also gives out favors, but his are a little bit more nefarious. When this guy gives out favors, you're really dreading the payment that you'll have to give. So it's sort of the Devil facing a dark reflection of himself.

What can you say about the Sinnerman's intentions in kidnapping Lucifer?
Henderson: The Sinnerman's the kind of person who knows that putting angel wings on the Devil will only drive him deeper in the other direction. So Lucifer, whether he likes it or not, is being manipulated.
Modrovich: And that Sinnerman has a motivation in taking Lucifer into the desert that's other than the wings. He has this specific motivation that we will reveal to you throughout the entire season. He has a personal reason.

Lucifer was so close to revealing the truth to Chloe in the season finale. How much longer do you think you can draw out this reveal?
Henderson: 17 seasons.
Modrovich: Forever and ever and ever. No, you know one thing that we contend with to be really honest, we want to keep Chloe formidable, we want to keep her smart. But at the same time, the reason why she doesn't know at this time is because of Lucifer. Because Lucifer, even though he's very honest about being the Devil, he could have shown her at any time. He showed Linda (Rachael Harris). And so really, what we're hanging onto are the deep reasons why he's keeping it from her. It's because he's afraid she won't accept him, that she'll be afraid of him. And so that's sort of the place we're living.
Henderson: All we can tease is in the premiere, Lucifer will fulfill his promise to show her who he truly is.

Lucifer airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.

El diablo le hizo hacerlo: la estrella de 'Smallville' Tom Wellingregresa a TV en 'Lucifer'
Por Brian Truitt - 01 Oct, 2017

Tom Welling will never get over that final day on Smallville, heading back to Los Angeles from Vancouver, crossing the border for the last time after 10 seasons, and letting out a huge sigh of relief.

“I didn’t know what it was then, but now I realize it was just a sign of new beginnings and a new chapter,” says the 40-year-old actor.

Returning to the small screen for the first time since Smallville ended in 2011, after a 10-year run on WB and CW, Welling’s traded his Superman shield for an LAPD badge as Lt. Marcus Pierce on the third season of Fox’s Lucifer (Monday, 8 ET/PT). The show centers on Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), the devil come to Earth who helps cop Chloe Decker (Lauren German) solve crimes. Yet even his flamboyant persona stands a bit straighter when Pierce walks in as the new sheriff in town.

For Welling, it’s a chance to be on one of his favorite series. “It wasn’t like, ‘I’m coming back!’ I was like, ‘Cool, I get to be on that show?’ ” says Welling, who's done a few movies (2014’s Draft Day and 2016’s The Promise) after hanging up his superhero threads.

When Pierce arrives, he’s aloof and hard to read — unlike some of the show’s more over-the-top aspects.
That’s by design. What you’ll find out is he’s not exactly who he says he is. You find out who he is but also why he’s there, and that’s going to be another big reveal that will come out in the season.

He seems to dislike everybody, but has a strange interest in Lucifer.
Pierce knows who Lucifer is and Lucifer doesn’t know that. It’s a bit of a standoff – like a Western situation in a way (or) a High Noon sort of thing. I don’t know if they like each other, but there’s going to be a respect there.

What’s changed for you the most since your Smallville days?
The better you know yourself and the more experiences you have, the more that can inform the choices you make as an actor. And I’m older. (Laughs)

You don’t look it, other than some gray hair.
Well, that’s a character thing. I don’t actually have gray hair.

So what have you been up to over the past six years?
I went to New Zealand for a month, that was a lot of fun. I kind of just tried to do some things I wasn’t able to do while I was on Smallville: traveling and catching up with people who I haven’t seen in a long time. I’ve been busy – it just hasn’t been on camera.

Do you feel Smallville’s long run paved the way for Lucifer and all the various comic-book shows?
Very much so, and I’m proud to say that. I love what this genre says about people and it really focuses on identity: Characters trying to figure who they are and what their potential is and their place in the world. In the history of storytelling, that’s a strong theme.

Tom Ellis sobre el mmento 'WTF' en "Lucifer" y su nuevo rival
Por Brittany Frederick - 02 Oct 2017

Lucifer season 3 is bringing plenty of changes for the devil. He may have his wings back, but he’ll also have a rival for Chloe’s affections in new arrival Marcus Pierce (Smallville‘s Tom Welling).

So it’s going to be a crazy season for Lucifer, and the man himself Tom Ellis spoke to FanSided to tell us how his character will react to all of this upheaval in his world.

Though so much has been made of recovering Lucifer’s wings, just because he got them back at the end of last season, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

“It’s kind of a WTF moment,” Ellis revealed. “He’s come around in this desert, and then the one thing, the big kind of f**k you to his dad that he thought he’d accomplished, that’s taken care of, get back on. The wings are back on.”

Naturally, Lucifer immediately blames his father for the new/old accessory and sets out to unravel not just how his wings are back, but what that means in the big picture and if God is working with anyone else.

“It’s got to be dad. What does he do about that?” Ellis continued. “What do the wings mean to Lucifer? Are they defining of him through his dad’s eyes? Lucifer only wants to be defined by himself. That’s what he wants. He wants to be his own man and he’s sick and tired of his dad controlling him.

“So as hard as his dad is pushing him in one direction, or he believes it’s his dad, Lucifer’s going to pull even harder in the other direction,” he added. “What comes from that is some extra devilishness for Lucifer this year. I think he starts to spiral back towards the dark side.”

While the wings will give our hero the ability to fly if he wants, don’t expect him to start showing off. As Ellis perfectly put it: “if you’re given a present by someone you don’t like, what do you do with it?”

The other major issue in Lucifer season 3 is the continuing will they or won’t they between our title character and Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). They’ve come so close to crossing the line, but when Tom Welling joins the cast tonight as Marcus Pierce, he’ll also express a romantic interest in Chloe.

“I’m very resentful about that!” Ellis told us. “No, it’s great. Dan [Kevin Alejandro] was never a love rival; he was someone who just sort of thought he was better. This new lieutenant comes in and turns Chloe’s head and [gets her] attention.

“It’s new territory for Lucifer because he’s not number one anymore. Not that they sealed the deal with each other, but they’ve got this thing and it’s the closest thing to a relationship that Lucifer’s ever had and it’s the one relationship that makes him selfless. So it’s kind of exposing for him.

“And then we got someone coming in that’s turning the head of the person he has feelings for. How does he respond to that? It’s going to bring a fun dynamic [and] Tom and I are both 6-foot-3 so we literally stand head to head with each other.”

But even if the devil might be starting the new season back on his heels, he’s still going to be the charming would-be crime-fighter that fans have come to know and love. One of the reasons why Tom Ellis is so perfect in the role is because he can sell that wisecracking, overconfident side of the character but he’s also able to stab him in the heart and let that vulnerability bleed through.

And even as he moves a little toward the dark side, we’ll still see some of that vulnerability in the third season, particularly in how he deals with Ella (Aimee Garcia) and Dr. Linda (Rachael Harris).

“It’s a sort of role reversal,” Ellis explained. “Aimee and I have a really fun episode where we end up going to Las Vegas to solve a case and I start to learn a little more about her. I love that relationship between Lucifer and Ella, because he can’t put his finger on it, but there’s something about her. I would suggest there’s a purity about Ella that’s sort of an allure somehow. I think she still thinks he’s a Method actor.

“In terms of Linda, Linda’s seen so much now. She knows the real truth,” he continued, “so he can probably have a conversation with Linda that he can’t have with anyone else. Therapy before was therapeuticm but it wasn’t based on the real truth and now it is. Does that mean she may open herself up to him a little bit? The show can start to cross pollinate. We can start putting them in each other’s paths.”

It certainly seems like there’s plenty of unpredictability ahead in Lucifer season 3, and Tom Ellis will be right at the center of it. It’s Ellis’s performance as Lucifer that’s lit a fire under this series, and now it’s his character’s time to get burned. We’ll have to see how he deals with being the one not in control when Lucifer premieres tonight.

When we last saw Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis), he was alone in the desert and had grown a gorgeous set of wings. Fox’s Lucifer season three premieres on October 2, 2017 at 8pm ET/PT and during the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich explained where fans will pick up the action. They also discussed planning out season three, inserting the four stand-alone episodes, and introducing Tom Welling as a police lieutenant who develops an interest in Chloe.

Did holding over four episodes from season two change the writing process for season three?

Ildy Modrovich: “It was banana pants!”

Joe Henderson: (Laughing) “Well, the funny thing is it didn’t actually change the story at all. We had broken an 18-episode arc. What it did was put us in the position of, ‘Okay, we have four more episodes.’ We sort of saw it as, ‘This is a bonus.’ We’re like, ‘Listen, we’re going to go crazy with these episodes. We’re going to go stand-alone but we’re going to introduce a new story; we’re going to change our characters a bit in it. We’re going to play with format and a whole bunch of stuff.’

And, they’re awesome. The ‘stand-alone’ thing is almost deceptive. They start stories for a number of our characters. My hope is when people watch them, they ask, ‘Was that a stand-alone?’”

Ildy Modrovich: “They won’t be glaring. And also, since we could put them wherever we wanted in this season, we put them in and then had a repercussion in the next (episode). There’s a reaction to what happened in that episode in the next episode, so they don’t feel totally stand-alone.”

Joe Henderson: “Our first two episodes pick up directly from (the season two finale), and then our third episode is our first stand-alone. And then we have a couple others, and then you’ll never know. You’ll find out.”

And season three introduces a new cast member – Tom Welling.

Ildy Modrovich: “Like we didn’t have enough candy…eye candy! We just were like, ‘You know what? We really need somebody beautiful on this show.’”

Joe Henderson: “[…] We are so excited to have Tom. He is awesome.”

Ildy Modrovich: “And so sweet. When we were talking about casting him, we were like, ‘Do you think he’ll do it?’ And then literally people came out of the woodwork to tell us how lovely he is and just what a kind, humble, hard-worker, professional…and none of it’s true.” (Laughing) It’s all so true. He’s the nicest guy. I’m so happy.”

Joe Henderson: “And what’s fun is we’re going to play him against type. I think what drew him to the role is this isn’t his role on Smallville. This is very different. This is a chance for him to show off. I’m a huge Smallville fan, I know the range he has. This is a chance for him to show that off. We’re excited about it.”

Ildy Modrovich: “It’s got an edge.”

How is his relationship going to be with Lucifer? Is it adversarial?

Ildy: “It will have many movements.”

Joe Henderson: “…of the bowel nature. (Laughing) Had to go there!”

And how often will the shirts be written out of those scenes?

Joe Henderson: “Why would we even write them in?”

Ildy Modrovich: “As often as possible! We already have that written into the script. Trust me.”

Joe Henderson: “Lt. Marcus Pierce is the new big man on campus, to a certain extent. Our cast – the characters in the precinct get along well. They have their conflicts, obviously, but this is a tightly knit team. It’s almost like family. He’s going to come in and mix it up.”

Ildy Modrovich: “And they’ll have different levels. At first it will be he’s this tough detective. And then as he starts to kind of have his eye on Miss Decker, that’s not going to sit well. That’s not going to sit well with Lucifer.”

How is it going to change the team dynamic given that at the end of season two it looked like Lucifer has gone missing for a while?

Ildy Modrovich: “He hasn’t been gone as long as perhaps you might think. So, even though his wings are back, how long did it take to grow them? A very short time.”

Joe Henderson: “And what does that say?”

Do we get some explanation or are we left hanging for a while?

Ildy Modrovich: “I can say this, that the premiere episode is him trying to solve that mystery. ‘Who took me?’ He knows dad is behind this for sure. Who is his emissary? He doesn’t like to get his hands dirty.”

Joe Henderson: “He doesn’t like to whack guys in the back of the head by himself. So, who’s his emissary? ‘I’m going to find that man/woman/demon/angel/whatever and figure out what my dad’s up to and send him a message back.’ That’s episode one.”

And there will be a pure musical episode?

Ildy Modrovich: (Laughing) “I want that so badly from the bottom of my soul.”

Joe Henderson: “We’ll get there.”

Ildy Modrovich: “We’ll get there. I’m not sure if it’s this season, but we’ll get there.”

We’ve been told there’s some Sinatra and Vegas showgirls coming.

Ildy Modrovich: “That is coming. That episode will air before Christmas – I won’t say exactly when. Yeah, there’s a case in Las Vegas that they have to go solve and it becomes part of a sting operation to basically call the bad guy out by doing this big Vegas number. Ella gets to dance as the showgirl and of course Lucifer is the man on the mic. And, it’s truly my favorite moment of television. I cried when I saw the rehearsal. I cried. Ask Tom and Aimee (Garcia), I was crying.”

Joe Henderson: “Let’s see…who did he meet in Vegas last time he was in Vegas?”

Ildy Modrovich: “So going back is an interesting thing.”

What do you have in mind for this season as far as arcs go?

Joe Henderson: “We’ve been structuring it in three acts right now. We’re building toward our 10-episode arc of the fall, and then two other acts. We’ve got our waypoints. One of the things we like to do is we have the point where this is where we’re headed to but we are ready for a swerve if all of a sudden you come up with a better idea or all of a sudden you start to see something happening on screen and you’re like, ‘Whoa, that’s good! We should play with that.’

So, it’s a three-act play to a certain extent. But the fun of it is, it’s jazz. You want to be able to go, ‘Oh, this is really working!’ Or, Ildy comes in and she’s like, ‘What about this?’ ‘Well, that blows everything up.’ ‘That’s awesome!’”

Ildy Modrovich: “Joe’s just like, ‘No.’ I go, ‘Here’s an idea.’ ‘No.’ He’s always going to say no.”

How will Dr. Linda feel safe again?

Ildy Modrovich: “That’s a good question. She does. We actually worked just on an episode where she has to really face what happened to her. The strange part about it is she’s a therapist who helps other people through grieving and things like that – PTSD and traumatic experiences. She thinks she knows how to do it for herself but what she’s missing is someone to help her through it. She’s missing the ‘her’ in the equation. And so, she finds someone who helps her through it.”

Joe Henderson: “It’s me.”

Joe Henderson sobre la Season 3 – Entrevista Exclusiva – Partes 1 & 2
Por ABBIE BERNSTEIN - 02 Oct 2017

There are some big changes afoot in LUCIFER’s third season when the show returns to Fox on Monday nights, beginning October 2. At the end of Season 2, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) – who is actually the Devil, though a very honest individual – almost got together with his true love, LAPD detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German). Then someone bonked him over the head and he woke up naked in the desert, with his angel wings reattached, even though he’d previously cut them off and burned them.

Meanwhile, Lucifer’s mother (Tricia Helfer) has moved on to her own dimension to create new worlds, as befits a goddess. However, the body she inhabited, defense lawyer Charlotte Richards, is still with us. Tom Welling joins the cast this season as police lieutenant Marcus Pierce. Behind the scenes, LUCIFER has moved from shooting primarily in Vancouver to shooting entirely in Los Angeles, where the series is set.

Tom Kapinos adapted LUCIFER from the comic book series by Mike Dringenberg and Sam Kieth, which itself is a spinoff of Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN graphic novels. Executive producer Joe Henderson, who with fellow e.p. Ildy Modrovich is LUCIFER’s show runner, previews what’s in store for the series’ angels, demons and ordinary mortals.

ASSIGNMENT X: When you did the Season 2 finale with that final sequence of Lucifer waking in the desert to find that he had wings again, did you know that you were getting picked up, or was that just going to be this amazing metaphor if it ended there?

JOE HENDERSON: At that point, we felt very comfortable that we were getting picked up. When Fox tells you, “Feel free to do a cliffhanger,” you feel very comfortable doing so. But also, what I personally believe in is, every season, you wrap up that season and then leave a tease of what’s to come. I always plan on success. A big part of it was, all right, we want to wrap up the Mom story, we want to give it an ending, and then we want a tease of what’s to come. And we knew we’d be getting to a whole exploration of identity, and we just wanted to make the big swing that would force everyone to come back.

AX: Now that Lucifer has his wings back, what is he going to do about them?

HENDERSON: All I’m going to say is, if you give Lucifer wings and tell him he’s an angel, he’s going to run in the other direction. You tell the Devil he’s good, he’s going to show you how bad he is, and that’s what this season is about. The Devil is back.

AX: Are the wings detachable?

HENDERSON: That is a big question we will ask early on. And/or does Lucifer want to cut them off yet again? He’s got them off before – what’s going to stop him now? Or will he just slice them off again in spite?

AX: Lucifer’s angel brother Amenadiel, played by D.B. Woodside, has lost his wings, but when he had them, they weren’t always in evidence. So how does this work?

HENDERSON: So our angel rules are, there in your back, but they’ll come out when you expose them. They’re hidden until you want them to come forth.

AX: You’ve had some scenes where you were clearly in recognizable Los Angeles locations, but until now, you were mainly shooting in Vancouver. What’s happening with Season 3?

HENDERSON: We are now entirely relocated in Los Angeles. The first two years, we shot in Vancouver, with splinter units in L.A. And now we are shooting entirely in Los Angeles. Our Vancouver crew was amazing, they did amazing work making Vancouver look like L.A. But it’s so much fun being able to shoot Los Angeles for itself and making it a character on the show, it’s been incredible. To shoot on the Warner Brothers lot – I’ve never shot on a lot before – it’s an incredible experience to actually be home.

AX: Tricia Helfer is still a season regular, even though Lucifer and Amenadiel’s Mom has gone off to create her own universe. Does Mom return?

HENDERSON: [The character of] Charlotte Richards is still on the show. And Charlotte Richards is very confused, because she died, and suddenly woke up again, and time had passed, and it appears someone has been walking around, pretending to be her. So what we get is a wonderful opportunity to explore a character who is suddenly wondering what happened to her life, and who was this person living it, and where was she while she was dead? And part of the mystery is, was she in Heaven, was she in Hell, was she somewhere else? And that’s a question she’ll be asking herself when we finally see her again.

AX: Was it tricky to figure out how to keep her character interwoven with everybody else?

HENDERSON: Honestly, we had written a one-season arc for Tricia Helfer. And then we got Tricia Helfer. And the problem is, when you have Tricia Helfer, you don’t want to let go of her, because she is so good. And so as we got towards the end of the season, we started talking, we just started breaking stories, and started coming up with so many ideas of what to do with her character, and what to do with such a talented actress. And honestly, it was one of those situations where we loved the character, we loved the actress so much, that we kept building stories, and a lot of it came from that. The story of Mom ended, but the story of Charlotte Richards suddenly came to life.

AX: There was an episode where Timothy Omundson played a man who might or might not have been channeling Dad, aka God. At least, Mom seemed to think he was. Are we ever going to find out if that really was Dad or not?

HENDERSON: For one thing, Timothy Omundson was quite possibly the greatest guest star we ever had. We adore him. He’s recovering right now – he had a stroke recently and he’s been detailing it on Twitter in a very brave, open way, and it’s awesome. We’ve never had a guest actor come in for one episode and make such an impact on us. He’s part of the family, even though he’s only in one episode. So we would love to explore that again. Part of the question is when he becomes available again. He’s currently recovering. We are there for him, we are wishing him the best. He will recover. I am hoping when he does, he wants to come back, because we love him and he had a great experience, but honestly, what we’ll do is, we’ll work around him, and that’s a testament to his skill. He took such ownership of the role in a way that few actors can.

AX: So if that was Dad, he’s only going to manifest as the character played by Timothy Omundson?

HENDERSON: What I would say is, that’s a guy who thought he was Dad. And whether or not he had a piece of him or not is something to explore. But Dad is bigger than a single mortal being, so the full version of that is yet to be seen.

AX: Chloe’s ex-husband Dan, played by Kevin Alejandro, was involved with “Charlotte” last season, who he never realized was a deity, and now thinks is Lucifer and Amenadiel’s stepmother, rather than their actual mother. Where is Dan going this season?

HENDERSON: So a big part of Dan’s arc is, despite all of the machinations, he actually kind of fell for Charlotte Richards. But then when he found her on the beach [in the Season 2 finale], she didn’t remember him at all. So where we start is, he fell for Charlotte Richards, because she is a weird, confusing woman, but she actually seemed to care for him. And now she seems to pretend that she doesn’t even know him. So a big part of it is, who is this new Charlotte Richards, is she the woman I fell in love with, and/or is she someone I can care about? So what we’re really going to do is explore what happens when the woman that you didn’t expect to fall in love with but did seems to be a whole new person.

AX: Does this mean that Dan is over Chloe in the romantic sense?

HENDERSON: Yes. One of the things I love is, you see the two when we broke them apart. I think towards the end, in particular, when Chloe was like, “Oh, if you [marry] Charlotte, you’ll be Lucifer’s stepdad.” It felt like they were just like, “You know what? I love you, but I love you as a friend. And not only is that okay, that’s good.” I like showing that healthy version of divorce. As someone who is a child of divorce, there are very many ways to make it healthy, and to me, the two of them have healthily decided, “I love you, not in that way anymore, but I care about you.” So what we’re going to see more and more is, “Dan, be careful with your heart. Chloe, be careful with where you go. I love you in the ‘Don’t get hurt’ sort of way,” not the, “I love you, I’m jealous” way. I love being able to depict that healthy separation.

AX: Is Chloe and Dan’s young daughter Trixie, played by Scarlett Estevez, going to get curious about what’s going on? When the show started, she was so little that she matter-of-factly accepted that her mother knows somebody named Lucifer. But as she’s getting a little older, is she going to start to notice some odd things about Lucifer?

HENDERSON: For one thing, Scarlett is such an amazing actress. You get kid actors, you don’t know what you’re going to get. With Scarlett, you know exactly what you’re going to get, which is a kid who knows timing and comedy and also can do heart. But when it comes to Trixie’s character, the fun of it is, she’s the disarming character who sees through the b.s. And that’s something we’re going to lean on. But like a kid, she sees the truth but also misinterprets it. What I love about Trixie’s character is, she’s actually very similar to Lucifer. She’s a child who’s oddly adult in many different ways. So as much as she’ll understand the heart of something, she won’t necessarily be able to interpret what it means, and then I think one of the reasons Lucifer is so uncomfortable around her is, children are his equal, because they are innocent, but also have more insight than you can expect.

AX: Maze, played by Lesley-Anne Brandt, is Lucifer’s demon associate from Hell who had an affair with Amenadiel and is currently roommates with Chloe and Trixie. Maze believes that she does not have a soul. Will she have any concerns about this?

HENDERSON: One of the big things that was important to me was teeing up how demons are different from everything else. And in Episode Thirteen [of Season 3], which I co-wrote, one of the big things I really wanted to hit was the fact that Maze doesn’t have a soul. Because to me, it’s a fascinating idea on a couple levels. One, what does a soul even mean? Two, what happens if you don’t think you have a soul? What I love about Maze, and what we’re going to explore in our Maze-focused episode coming up this season is, if you don’t have a soul, then when you die, you’re just dead. So why not live every moment like it’s your last? And what does that say about you, what does that say about the way you live? To me, Maze knows she might die tomorrow and that’s it, no loss. And you know what? Not only is that fine, isn’t that healthy? Isn’t that better than living with the sort of dread of what’s to come? That argument, that debate of morality, of soulfulness, but also the question of, yeah, you’re living that way, but does that mean you don’t have a soul, or does that mean you just don’t know it? That’s our show. So that’s a big thing we want to explore is, do you not have a soul, or is it just easier to say you don’t?

AX: Chloe doesn’t seem very introspective on the soul issue. Despite the fact that she has Christian trappings, she doesn’t seem overly concerned with how things will affect her immortal soul. Dan seems maybe a little more religious …

HENDERSON: We try to make every character a different aspect of [the spiritual question]. And Chloe very definitely represents our logic side. She’s a detective – “Give me proof and I’ll believe it.” She’s not an atheist, per se, but she wants proof of things, she wants to understand things. To me, that’s the beauty of her dynamic with Lucifer. Lucifer, ironically, he’s a character derived of faith. You have to believe in him. But the irony is in front of you saying, “I exist,” but you have to believe what he’s saying. So it’s just another version of the faith versus realism debate, and Chloe very much represents the Scully side of that, if you want to use THE X-FILES.

AX: Well, you sort of want somebody to say to Lucifer, “Look, dude, you’re telling me you’re the Devil, but let’s say you are who you say you are, you look human, and you know that humans lie. So why should I believe you?”

HENDERSON: It’s funny, because to me, one of the things Chloe understands is Lucifer’s soul. But what I love about Chloe’s character in particular is, I think she’s got Lucifer pegged. And one of the things she knows is that he does tell the truth. Now, he says he’s the Devil, and she can’t quite square that. But when it comes to moral truths, when it comes to truth of the heart, when he says something, she believes him. And so I guess to me what’s so interesting is, she has faith in him. Amongst all these questions, the one thing she believes in is Lucifer’s character

ASSIGNMENT X: What will Tom Welling be doing as LAPD lieutenant Marcus Pierce?

JOE HENDERSON: This man is so talented. Here’s what I love about Pierce. We haven’t had an authority figure on our show. Our characters run around, they solve cases, but no one’s come around and said, “How are you guys doing this? What are you doing?” So when Lieutenant Marcus Pierce shows up, he’s like, “Wait, what exactly is going on?” Ella [the police coroner played by Aimee Garcia] and Dan [the police detective played by Kevin Alejandro] and Chloe [police detective and Lucifer’s true love, played by Lauren German] and Lucifer [played by Tom Ellis], they’re getting along now. There will always be fights, but there’s a rhythm. This is the character who comes in and blows it all up. This is the character who comes in and goes, “What are you guys doing?” And to have a character who can be – “antagonist” is the wrong word, because he’s just trying to figure out how this stuff works. He’s just trying to lead the precinct. But to have someone who’s coming in, going, “How do we run this well when you guys are doing this crazy stuff,” that’s a fun toy to play with. And Tom Welling is such a joy and such a nice dude. And he just immediately melded with the cast in a way that was a relief and a joy.

Pierce has got an eye on Chloe, or at least will eventually. So what’s fun is, you’ve got the super-handsome dude showing up, and then you’ve got the Devil showing up, and then you’ve got the thing of like, “Oh, hey, you’re the big guy coming in, swinging his everything.” And Chloe might be frustrated at first, but in Season 2, we pushed the will-they/won’t-they of Lucifer and Chloe. In Season 3, we really want to explore a love triangle. Pierce is a tough guy, but a good guy. Lucifer is a lech, but a good guy. We want to play, Pierce is much more Chloe’s rhythm. He’s a cop who believes in the rules implicitly. He can be very difficult in very different ways, but he much more follows Chloe’s moral path than Lucifer does. So who do you choose? And really exploring that duality is a lot of the fun of the season. We will definitely get into more mythological stuff as we go on, but right now, the idea was, really explore a love triangle in this police world.

AX: How much is Season 3 going to be procedural, and how much is it going to be serialized?

HENDERSON: We are going to try to replicate the formula of the last year, which is, every episode will have a serialized element, we will always have a case of the week, and honestly, I like the cases, because Lucifer makes every case about himself, so every case is an opportunity for Lucifer to explore whatever he’s going through. The fun of it is, is the case appropriate, or is it not, but does Lucifer make it about himself anyway? So that’s the fun to me.

AX: Are we going to get any more mythology this season as far as how angels and demons work?

HENDERSON: To me, our show always has to be balanced. And I love the mythology – I’m a mythology guy, always balance the mythological with the case. So there will always be a case of the week, but there will always be mythology. For example, I may have slowly snuck in one of my favorite characters from LUCIFER, who will be slowly seeded into the season. Will we see this character? Maybe, maybe not, but we are laying the breadcrumbs. There are mythological elements that will always be on the show. We have a demon from Hell. We are not going to run away from that. We have a character who can go to Hell at times. These are our toys, but we try to use them carefully, we try to use them when the characters demand it. That’s both the fun and the challenge of our show, but we will never walk away from the mythology. That is what makes the show sing.

AX: Last season, Lucifer’s therapist Linda, played by Rachael Harris, ended up in trouble and it looked like she was going to lose her license. Is that storyline continuing into Season 3?

HENDERSON: I love Rachael Harris, and I love what she’s done with the character. And the first two seasons, Linda was very much the bouncing board, like, let’s use her to dig into other characters. But very slowly, we tried to also dig into Linda and show the cracks. And her near-death experience will be our beginning to really show the cracks and really dig into the character of Linda. One of our big goals in Season 3 is to learn more about who Linda is, but also break her apart a little bit and put her back together, because Rachael Harris is such a good actress. Also, that character is so rich. So many times, you get the therapist who lets everyone bounce off them, but their story could be the most interesting one. You just don’t know [that], because they’re always listening. And it’s time for her to stop listening, and time for us to start listening to Dr. Linda. And that’s one of the things we want to do.

AX: Any thoughts of bringing in Peter Bogdanovich as Linda’s shrink, the way he played the therapist for Lorraine Bracco’s psychiatric professional character on THE SOPRANOS?

HENDERSON: Oh, my God. You have no idea how many times we have wanted and discussed bringing Peter Bogdanovich in. Peter, if you’re listening or reading, please call us. How great would it be to do something like that? We’re a phone call away.

AX: And is Amenadiel, Lucifer’s angel brother played by D.B. Woodside, going to continue to pine for his ex-lover, the demon Maze, played by Lesley-Anne Brandt?

HENDERSON: These are great questions. So Amenadiel’s arc in the last two seasons was very much a challenge of faith, and very much, he failed, because he didn’t believe his Father [God, had confidence in him], and then his Father proved that actually, Amenadiel was his favorite son. So Season 3 is all about Amenadiel going, “You know what? I got test after test – I failed it. I’m not failing again. Now I’m going to stand up, now I’m going to prove that I am actually deserving of this.” Season 2, we deconstructed Amenadiel. Season 3, it’s all about him proving why he should be the favorite son, but we’re going to make it really, really hard on him.

AX: And is LUCIFER ever going to mention the son of God who was apparently here and left after thirty-three years?

HENDERSON: [laughs] We are taking a page from the comic book [LUCIFER is based on a series of comics by Mike Dringenberg and Sam Kieth, which itself is a spinoff of Neil Gaiman’s SANDMAN graphic novels], which is, do not open that can of worms. Mike Carey actually wrote a forward to one of the comics, where he very smartly said that if you bring up Jesus, it just unravels everything on your mythology, but if you don’t bring him up, you’re fine. So we’ve just come to the philosophy of, we’re just not going to deal with that right now. If we ever find a way to do it, we’re interested, but right now, we’re telling our Old Testament story. That’s not to say he didn’t exist – obviously, he did, [as illustrated by] Father Frank and other things, but it’s not a story we’re telling right now. The comic book was very smart about it, and we will follow their lead.

AX: SUPERNATURAL has gone twelve seasons with God and Lucifer as sometimes onscreen characters and gotten around that issue, so …

HENDERSON: Right? And by the way, we should all be so lucky and do it so well. We shouted out to SUPERNATURAL, who shouted out to us. I don’t know if you saw, but they have Mark Pellegrino, who plays Lucifer, a couple years ago, they did a shout-out to us …

AX: SUPERNAURAL’s Lucifer had a line about, “What am I gonna do, go to L.A. and run a club?”

HENDERSON: That was very nice of them, I really appreciated it.

AX: Even though you are shooting Season 3 in Los Angeles, you actually shot several episodes earlier this year in Vancouver that haven’t aired yet. John Billingsley was in one of them …

HENDERSON: Yes. First of all, John Billingsley was amazing. So what happened was, we thought we were doing eighteen episodes, and then we found out we were doing twenty-two. They [Fox] said, “Listen, we only want to make the eighteen-episode arc, but we want to order more episodes, and if we find room in our schedule, we’ll air them in the spring, but more likely, they’ll air in Season 3.” So those four episodes are airing in Season 3. so we have these four episodes, and we’ve laced them through the top of Season 3. Towards the end, we knew they were going to be in Season 3. So what we did is, we wrote the episodes early, and we made them standalone stories. For example, the third episode to air [in Season 3] is one of our standalones, but I doubt you’ll be able to tell, because it’s a Maze-centric episode that really starts off her story for Season 3, because we knew this would be one of the things we’d be doing. John Billingsley is in Episode 2:21, which is airing early in Season 3. It might be one of the best episodes we have made. That is our weird, slightly bizarre TWILIGHT ZONE episode. And he’s fantastic.

They have some L.A. shoot in them, because while we shot in Vancouver, we also shot L.A. splinter. So we have an episode which is a flashback episode, when Lucifer first came to L.A. And a very big amount of it is in L.A. That was part of our challenge for the first two seasons is, we always shot some in L.A., so you’d be like, “Wait, I thought this was Vancouver, but that’s definitely L.A.” That was the challenge and fun of the show was, we would try to get a scene or two per episode to make you feel like you were there. But now, this season, every shot, you are there.

AX: Which studio are you shooting at?

HENDERSON: We are on the Warner Brothers lot. We are in the largest soundstage on the Warner Brothers lot, and it is awesome. It is so exciting, there is a single soundstage which has the Warner Brothers logo – that’s ours. We are proud to bring production back to L.A. I’ve never shot on the L.A. lot before – I could not be more thrilled.

AX: What else should we know about LUCIFER Season 3?

HENDERSON: Here’s what I would tease. Lucifer got his angel wings back. He doesn’t like that. If Lucifer is told to go left, he goes right. If he has angel wings, he re-embraces his Devil side. So the fun of it is, Chloe’s been a good influence on Lucifer. And he’s getting nicer and nicer, and part of him wonders, is that part of the reason that Dad [God] gave me these wings back, assuming it’s Dad? Maybe it’s time I go in the other direction. So we’re going to see the Devil re-embrace a bit of who he used to be, and we’re going to play with the toys that we already have.

AX: If it’s not Dad, is there somebody else it might be?

HENDERSON: In Lucifer’s perspective, it’s always Dad. But someone knocked him over the back of the head. Someone on Earth did this. So in the premiere, the question is who. And that becomes the big string that we pull at the top of the season. So that’s the big examination – “I know it’s Dad, but was it Amenadiel? Was it someone else? Or, if it wasn’t Dad, was it something darker?”

We [Henderson and fellow executive producer/show runner Ildy Modrovich] are on Season 3 of a show that we love. We have almost the exact same writing staff that we had – even though we’re redoing our crew, we have the exact same cast that we had. We have hit our groove in a way that makes me so happy. So right now, all we’re focused on is getting this show done, and honestly, I love it so much.

Kevin Alejandro sobre los tiempos confusos que llegan para Dan
Por Carla Day - 09 Oct, 2017

It's not going to be easy being Dan on Lucifer Season 3. Charlotte Richards doesn't remember their romance, he's still in the dark about Lucifer and he's getting a new boss!

BuddyTV spoke with Kevin Alejandro about those coming storylines, Dan's relationship with Chloe, directing his first Lucifer episode, and even Dan's fun socks!

For this season, we have an interesting set up for Dan's character. Can you first talk about Dan and Chloe's relationship as the season begins. After last season, they kind of seem that they have come to a pretty good spot in their relationship.

Yeah, I think Dan and Chloe have sort of found a way to accept where they are in their relationship at this point and trying not to bring it to a place where it will conflict with either one of their goals in life with work. It's really interesting to see how Dan and Chloe have that interaction with each other and have learned how to be friends and learn to carry that sort of weight of "we used to be a family, we have a daughter," to carry that responsibly. It's interesting to see how they are going to deal with that.

The real Charlotte is back. That has to be very confusing for Dan.

Absolutely. You know we pick up were we ended season 2, were Dan sort of gets his heart broken a little bit with the realization that Mom doesn't know or Charlotte Richards doesn't know who he is. We pick up this year with Dan being even more confused. As he sees Charlotte Richards sort of wandering around, and she doesn't seem to remember the love affair that they had, and it's sort of a punch in the gut for Dan. Throughout the season, you kind of see them get a little bit closer and he questions the possibility for as to whether or not they can have a relationship between the real Charlotte Richards and Dan. They really delve into that to see if those two humans can interact in a way that Dan really wanted to happen.

Does her profession as a cut-throat lawyer and his as a do-good cop conflict at all?

I think it's definitely going to be a challenge, but they have done some very interesting things with the development of Charlotte Richards that I can't really hit on too much. That definitely poses a bit of a challenge for awhile.

Even though Dan and Chloe have found a good place in their relationship, will the introduction of Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling) influence their relationship or not?

I think it's going to influence it greatly. Not only Chloe and Dan, but it's going to influence Lucifer and Chloe's relationship as well. This new guy, who is completely opposite of Lucifer. He's strategic, he's reserved, he's well-respected and he's super handsome. There in lies the conflict between Lucifer and him, but also with Dan-- Dan wants to be the best, right? He's going to do what he has to do to be the best. I think it's a challenge for Dan to gain Marcus Pierce's respect and you see him sort of grasp at straws trying to get some sort of recognition or acceptance from Marcus Pierce.

Is their challenge going to be more on a professional basis than a personal? Or both?

I think it's going to be a combination of both. I think the writers do a really good job of winding and twining together business and pleasure and drama and comedy. I think it's going to mix both worlds in such a way that they're going to conflict in a pretty interesting direction.

Dan doesn't know who Lucifer is and he's one of the only people who doesn't have any clue. How much does that inform on the relationship between Dan and Lucifer? And add in the Charlotte situation, Dan is the one who doesn't know what's happening.

Right. [laughs] He's definitely the one that doesn't know what's happening. I think it has this interesting dynamic of "What the heck are you talking about dude? You're so weird." But, it's gotten to that point where Dan's just embraced the fact that Lucifer is going to say something super-strange and I'm just brush over it and be like, "Okay, whatever, dude. I don't have time for you right now. You're weird and you're freaking me out." I think it's pretty cool that he's the only character who doesn't really know much about it, because it has that ability to add that dynamic of the human thrust into this sort of celestial world without really knowing what he's surrounded by.

One of my favorite parts of the is how the writers and the actors have been able to evolve the characters over the seasons. All the characters have been able to grow, which doesn't happen on all shows. For Dan, what's your favorite part of his evolution?

I think one of my favorite evolutions of Dan is you're really getting to see him struggle with making choices and you understand-- you almost get to see who he was as a younger guy, the ambition, the drive and it never falters, with him making decisions to succeed like the comedy between he and Lucifer and how he gets things done. I'm really liking the journey they are taking him on. He had a family, he's losing his family, but they're making him human enough to give him characteristics like doing improv classes and trying to deal with that, introducing relationship possibilities, and watching him not fully succeeding in all of that and the way he handles that really funny to me.

In the first episodes, are there any great scenes like the improv stuff or fun stuff like that?

Absolutely. Very early on, Dan revisits the stage. We'll just put it that way.

That's exciting. Improv or something else?

I'm not sure I'm allowed to say. It's all in the same vein of improv and a little something different that I really think people are really gonna [laughs]-- that they're going to laugh their socks off actually.

Does Dan have fun socks on in this scene like you usually wear?

Dan always has fun socks on. The key is-- I'm trying to figure out how to slightly expose them in a lot of scenes, so people-- so they will be like a little Easter egg for people to hunt for.

What episode are you directing this season?

It's kind of changing around a little bit. At presently, it's episode 19, I think it is. I was originally going to direct the last episode of the season, but I think they are making that episode a little more about my character, so they're switching it around so I won't have to direct myself in a Dan-heavy episode. That gives me more time to really focus on what I'm going to do wrong [laughs] or do right. Yeah, either way, I'm super, super excited.

Do you know anything about this Dan-centric episode?

I have zero knowledge about that. They are very secretive with us and we are with you guys. They don't like to tip the hat too much. I do know that they are considering it a standalone episode. It's just an opportunity for the audience to get to know a little bit more about who he is and how Dan ticks and constantly making difficult decisions for the right reasons.

He's done a lot of that, hasn't he?

Yeah, he certainly has.

It sounds a lot like the extra four episodes that you filmed last season for other characters. Is it in that vein?

It's absolutely in that vein. I'm not really quite sure how they're boarding everything, but my assumption would be that if I directed that one, it would be a standalone so I'm not sure it would even air until Season 4. Just to have an opportunity to venture down that inevitable transition of my career is pretty exciting.

Have you directed before?

You know, I have. I've directed a lot of my own things, like little short films and a little spec pilot. And that's kind of what helps get me accepted into the Warner Bros. Director's Program, I believe. They looked at the little things I've done for virtually no money and thought it would be interesting to see what I could do surrounded by a team of professionals and be able to direct something surrounded by my peers.

As much as it would be maybe more difficult to direct people that you act with regularly, I think it would be more helpful, because they are there to help you and support you.

Absolutely, I agree with that. I don't think their intention would be, "Hey, come direct this show and set you up to fail." They have what works, we have what works, and because we all get along so, so great as friends as well as colleagues, everyone's going to have each other's back on that episode. The key is, I've learned, to really trust the team that surrounds you, like the DP (Director of Photography), and grips, and everybody who helps put everything together on the technical side and really, really trust that everyone's there to support you.
