Saving Hope delivered quite the cliffhanger with its Season 2 finale. Alex flat lined on the operating table, Charlie suddenly saw ghosts again, and Joel could easily be held responsible for all of it. To soothe our frazzled nerves, TV Guide Canada spoke to executive producer and writer Morwyn Brebner and co-executive producer and writer Adam Pettle about what to expect in Season 3.
That ending:
Saving Hope hadn’t been renewed for Season 3 when the writers penned the finale, so while they wrote it hoping for the best, they needed to make sure it could also work as a series finale too. “We knew strongly that we wanted Charlie and Alex to meet in the spirit world and that this would be the final image of the season,” Brebner said.
Charlie and the ghosts:
“Seeing Alex was about love,” Pettle revealed about why Charlie could see Alex’s ghost. Brebner added that Charlie would have been able to see Alex through just about anything. But don’t rule out Charlie and the ghosts, their presence is the show’s concept. Brebner teases “the ghosts won’t be going anywhere” but that anything–Alex taking over for Charlie or ending up in a coma the way he did in Season 1–is a possibility.
Joel:
The idea of the show ending with Alex and Charlie together doesn’t sound like good news for the charming doctor. “There’s always hope for Joel,” Brebner reassured TV Guide Canada, adding the character would have a much bigger story arc this season. Part of that comes from the sense of responsibility Joel will feel about what happened to Alex. “It’s going to be huge for him. He’s going to do some serious soul-searching and go to some new places,” they said.
The love triangle:
The love triangle is central to the show, Brebner explained, saying that the relationship between Charlie and Alex, and the triangle with Joel is almost their bread and butter—and that Season 3 will stick with that. But they’re also looking at exploring the lives of the other hospital staff connected to that triangle.
Maggie and Gavin:
Losing the baby was definitely rough for the couple, although we didn’t see Maggie and Gavin together in the finale. Pettle and Brebner said elusively, “It will have a major impact – that’s all we can say!”
Reycraft, Jackson, Dawn and Dana:
The hospital regulars will all be affected by what happened to Alex—including Reycraft who ominously warned against waking up a person who was sleepwalking. “We would love to have more Reycraft,” Brebner said about the possibility of K.C. Collins having more screen time now that his role on Lost Girl has ended. She added that everyone loves Jackson and his role will be expanding, likely with his own story arc. As far as Dawn and a relationship with Charlie, it’s always a possibility. Brebner had nothing but kind words for Wendy Crewson, who plays Dana, and said they would love to have her back exploring her role as a doctor and patient, but hadn’t worked out when that might happen yet.
Pettle and Brebner also said that Season 3 would pick up immediately where Season 2 left off, and that fans should expect “more romance” from the show. When asked for any reassuring words, Pettle joked “Don’t worry,” before Brebner added “but worry.”
