The DC Comics crime series Gotham is set to return to Fox later this month, and ahead of its spring premiere the cast and producers headed to WonderCon this weekend to promote the series chronicling the young James Gordon and even younger Bruce Wayne in their journeys toward becoming Gotham City’s protectors.

Actors David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle), Cory Michael Smith (Edward Nygma), Erin Richards (Barbara Kean), Jessica Lucas (Tabitha Galavan), and Drew Powell (Butch Gilzean) were joined by executive producer Danny Cannon for their spotlight panel, in which they showed a new trailer as well as the first five minutes of the upcoming episode, “How The Riddler Got His Name.”

The series took a hiatus after a huge confrontation between Robin Lord Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot and Nygma, who came up on top and is poised to make a huge impact on Gotham City as the series approaches its season finale.

While speaking about other villains that could debut on screen, alongside the recently announced casting of Alexander Siding as Ra’s Al Ghul, Cannon revealed anyone who is set to appear in a DC Film is off limits.

“If they’re not making a movie about them right then, we’re good,” Cannon said. “But they are making movies.”

Smith spoke about Nygma’s journey toward becoming the Riddler, revealing that they’re going to shy away from the look Jim Carrey employed in Batman Forever.

“He’s got some nice threads…I’m not going to be in a onesie, but yeah—theres a costume,” Smith said.

“The great difficulty here is that Edward, his opportunity to be a good person and live a normal life is passed,” Smith added, “He knows that his destiny is to wreak havoc. Now is the time.”

Nygma’s own arc will mimic that of Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne, who will be faced with his own trials in the end of the season.

“Bruce will go through a major transformation in these last eight episodes of the season, and it will result in him making a decision that he’s been searching for, for a very long time,” Mazouz said. “It will be the most important decision of his life. He is going to live out the reason he was created, and it will have very bad consequences for Bruce—catastrophic consequences. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s not going to be pretty.”

The panel then turned toward Bicondova’s portrayal of Selina Kyle, hinting that she may join up with Barbara and Tabitha in the future.

“I always love that concept of a female-only gang, Cannon said. “I think that’s something we’re really going to explore.”

To wrap things up, the panel discussed the presence of the Court of Owls, who have a long history and strong influence in Gotham City.

“We’re heading towards, is there somebody else behind the Court of Owls?” Cannon asked rhetorically. “We’re still unraveling what the city of Gotham is, how the city was created, who’s in charge. Things will get a lot worse before they can get better in the city of Gotham.”

Gotham returns to FOX Monday, April 24 at 8 p.m. for the final eight episodes of the third season. No official season four pick-up has been announced yet for the series.

by Scott Huver in TV News Comment 06 Abril 2017

Is “Gotham’s” Bruce Wayne getting closer than ever to becoming the Batman he’s fated to be?

In speaking with the press at Wondercon, David Mazouz, who plays the young, not-yet-Dark Knight on the Fox series was more than happy to hint that Bruce will be moving further down the path of becoming a masked vigilante. Along the way, he’ll struggle with both the increasing emergence of the Court of Owls, his enigmatic double, and his deteriorating romance with the young Selina Kyle when the series returns for its final eight episodes of Season 3 on April 24.

How is the Bruce/Selina relationship progressing as we head into the back half of the season?

David Mazouz: It was going good for a while. It hit a rough patch. I think it’s going to take some time to recover from that. Selina is very angry with Bruce, as we saw in one of the last episodes to air. It will take her a while to forgive him.

I think Bruce is going through something very, very big in his personal life right now in these coming episodes. Eventually, I think they will make amends, but it’s going to take a while to get there because what happened was such a big speed bump in their relationship.

He’s taken a lot of steps this season towards becoming the hero that he’s going to become eventually.

Absolutely.

What’s coming in the season that keeps him on that track?

It’s funny, because you’re saying that now, and you haven’t even seen what’s coming! That’s basically what the Bruce arc in these last eight episodes are. It’s him on his journey becoming what he’s about to become.

I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s really guided by his great desire to figure out his destiny, to figure out his greater propose in Gotham. He wants to know who he is, and somebody will come along and tell him. Whether that image of what he could be is really what he’s supposed to be… Basically, he’s going to be guided in a direction that probably isn’t the best – not probably, it isn’t the best route for him, and it’s going to take a lot of inner strength to bounce back.

Between the real Bruce and his identical doppelganger Subject 51A, which persona do you personally relate to the most?

Given that one’s good and one’s bad, I hope that I can relate more to the real Bruce! It’s interesting. He’s not bad. He’s lost. He’s very much a lost soul looking… actually, now that I think about it, similarly to Bruce these last eight episodes, he’s looking for a purpose as well.

Ultimately, he’s looking for love, he’s looking to be cared for, but his most direct goal is to find a purpose, somebody to give him something to do with his life, because he was created in a lab, let out, and where do you go from there? He doesn’t know anybody. He has literally zero relationships. So he sees Bruce, this is somebody who looks identical to him, and he thinks, “That’s it, that’s my calling.”

When Bruce kicks him out — with good reason, but he kicks him out from his life and says, I don’t ever want to see you again — Bruce 2 takes that and ends up in the hands of the Court of Owls. And now, because who he thought was going to be his savior ended up breaking his heart, he’s not going to have any trouble hurting him back.

Of the various versions of Bruce and Batman that you’ve explored while doing your research on the character, was there any previous iteration that left a long-lasting impression on the direction you wanted to take Bruce?

That’s a really good question. I’m trying to think now. I think one of the things that really influenced me in almost every single scene that I did, it was two things that really did this for me: It was the “Batman” series created by Greg Capullo and Scott Snyder in 2011, and also “Batman Begins.” Those two things, Batman shared a quality in both of those where he was very much stoic, and also you never could really tell what he was thinking.

That’s something that I kind of really started to explore, and I felt like it was fitting with what was happening with Bruce in the series. Something I really started to explore towards the middle of Season 2, if you go back, you’ll notice it. He’s much more transparent, simply put, in his facial expressions throughout Season 1 and the first half of Season 2, and then towards the middle of our series so far, he becomes much more stoic. I think that’s the simplest way to put it.

Set in Batman’s home city before the Dark Knight Detective started his nocturnal patrols, “Gotham” stars Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordon, David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Camren Bicondova as young Selina Kyle, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, Morena Baccarin as Leslie Thompkins and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney.

Currently on hiatus, the show resumes its third season Monday, April 24, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

- ¿Aparecerán "The Gotham City Sirens" en "Gotham"?:

"No estoy segura." explica Bicondova.

Ra's al Ghul will soon be making his Gotham debut. The enigmatic, fearsome, and centuries-old leader of the powerful vigilante group known as The League of Shadows is being portrayed by Alexander Siddig, who is best know for his performances in Game of Thrones, Da Vinci's Demons, or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

As Bruce digs deeper into The Court of Owls, he will discover that Ra's al Ghul is the one pulling the strings. And the relationship that develops between them will have a major impact on Bruce's relationship with Alfred, the one person in his life that never gives up on him and isn't afraid to tell the boy billionaire when he's crossed the line.

"[Ra's al Ghul is] going to be the answer to a question that we begin to pose fairly early on when we get back, when we start to see these forces at work in Gotham," executive producer John Stephens told TV Guide. "We're posing this enigma of what is behind all these things. His reveal will be an answer and a further question once he comes on the scene because he's such an enormous character in the Batman canon. What are his plans for Gotham? What are his plans for Bruce and how is that actually going to change Bruce going forward, because Bruce's encounter with Ra's al Guhl is definitely going to change his and Alfred's relationship from this point forward."

Will Ra's al Ghul play a part in Bruce's transformation into Batman? "I think we all know about how Ra's al Guhl figures into the creation of the Batman mythology from our own knowledge of the canon and Christopher Nolan's movies," Stephens offered. "It's a little hard for me to talk about without totally letting the cat out of the bag."

Just as quickly as Selina and Bruce officially became a couple, they young lovers were torn apart by the unsavory actions of her con-artist mother and, more importantly, that her new boyfriend wasn't open about what he knew and how he was handling the situation. Selina was none too pleased about being left in the dark, so she broke up with Bruce by slugging him square in the jaw. Ouch!

This Monday, Gotham returns with an all new episode, and in it, we'll find out that Selina and Bruce haven't spoken for quite some time. Is there any chance they will reconcile this season?

"It is a teenage relationship. It is a tortured one. I think we'll see them both come together and get pushed apart again," executive producer John Stephens told TV Guide. "The element of the Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle relationship that we as all fans know is that they are bound together and attracted to one another, but at their core they are also both mission-driven and loners. They push each other apart constantly. That dynamic we will watch again over the course of the season because they are drawn together, but they also can't be together."

“Gotham” executive producer and frequent director Danny Cannon isn’t just the person responsible for the visual look of the stylized pre-superhero series. As one of the show’s’ regular writers, he also has a strong hand in the series’ overall vision.

With “Gotham” returning Monday, April 24 to close out its third season, Cannon joined a small group of press to reveal some of the secrets of the remaining episodes – and to hold tightly onto a few bombshells to be dropped along the way.

On the evolution and endgame of the current season:

Danny Cannon: At the beginning, we had two agendas. We had Bruce Wayne really needing to confront his parents’ death, and where that leads him, and the rabbit hole we went down in the Court of Owls, which plays out completely at the end of the season – and then turns into something else.

Then the other one was Ed Nygma, finally. Right from the pilot to this point, we’ve been adding to him. He’s been evolving gradually, whether it’s wardrobe, hair, makeup, glasses, props — but more than anything, what Cory was really good at doing was body language. You find this man’s confidence, do you know what I mean? And his confidence to say, like so many villains in the DC [Comics] canon, “I shall not be ignored. I shall be brave enough to be more than human.”

I think that’s what the theme of the season was. It was like metamorphosis. Bruce Wayne is metamorphosing into an adult now, and so is Ed Nygma… it’s just Ed Nygma is more psychotic and violent.

On the reveals that Ra’s al Ghul is coming to Gotham:

It’s a shame. We wanted Ra’s to be really a big surprise, because it’s a great intro, but these things get out. But the idea of like, how does the journey with the Court of Owls end? With ancient mysticism. They are such a political party, a Machiavellian, Borgia kind of world, that we wanted to go more mystic, and go back centuries and talk about history and stuff like that – which is the next evolution of our villain; which Ra’s is really good for that.

So that’s where that comes in, and that — really, the end of the season is about, just when you thought you found the bottom of the rabbit hole, just when you know what’s in the shadows, comes guys who live in the shadows.

On possible plans for more Jerome:

Jerome – oh, I don’t know! He didn’t die, though, did he? I just can’t get enough of Cameron [Monaghan].

What happened was, I did an episode — I wanted to do a comedy, except people thought they didn’t think I was funny. But John Wells did, and I said, “I like ‘Shameless.’” He said, do an episode of “Shameless.” I did an episode of “Shameless.” I love that show, and I love that cast — it’s the only episode of something I’ve done where I’ve haven’t written it or done the pilot. I met Cameron on that. I walked in and somebody said that they liked this idea of this character from a circus. I was like, “Dude, I know the guy. I know the guy!”

That’s happened twice on the show for me. Anthony [Carrigan], who plays Victor Zsasz, was the other guy. “I’ve got the guy. We’ve got him.” That’s a nice feeling.

On the rumored evolution of Barbara Kean – possibly into Harley Quinn:

I can’t. I can’t. All I can tell you is, the great thing, the joy of working with Erin is the range. The reason we changed her character, [is] because we knew what she could do. We’re like, “We can’t keep you in one place. You’ve got to keep evolving.” So she’s going to evolve again. That’s all I can tell you.

On walking a tonal line between the dark and macabre and the intentionally humorous:

We all feel like we’re on that line. When you read the scripts, you all feel like you’re on the same page. You all feel like you’re doing that. It’s just a tiny, little shove. When you’re dealing with a world that you want to be real, but it’s an alternative reality, it’s lost in time, any little shove that way or that way takes you – it’s really hard to tread that.

It’s very hard to get writers who completely get that world, directors who get that world, and to get day players who can come in and play the scene with these guys who have really embraced the world as well. Just sometimes, if you have a dark scene with a director who’s dark, and a dark line, in a dark work, just one little tip that way, sometimes in the cutting room we’ve gone, ooh, whoa. It’s weird. It’s like playing in a band, and somebody just plays a riff along with you, they’re playing exactly the same chords, but he plays it like Twiggy in Manson’s band.

I wrote that Mad Hatter episode. It was good to go down that path for a little while, because when you think about what this guy does for a living, it’s creepy as hell. But at the same time, that was definitely in the cutting room going, “Ooh….”

So hence you’ve got, later on, you’ve got him using rhyme a lot more, and being in a different balance. It’s not like a movie where you can spend six months in the cutting room, or six months writing, or two years writing. We write these things, and it’s barely dry, and people are saying it on set. Then the writer walks by the cutting room, and they’re saying his words in a scene, and it’s been cut, and two weeks later it’s on the air. So walking that thin line of what is “Gotham,” it only takes one little shove one way or the other and the tone shifts.

What is easy to get into, but hard to get out of?

The answer to that riddle is trouble, which Fox’s Gotham has plenty to serve its heroes as Season 3 resumes this Monday at 8/7c.

When last we tuned into the third-year, DC Comics-based drama, Edward Nygma (played by Cory Michael Smith) had sent Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) to sleep, literally, with the fishes. “But in Gotham, you can’t keep a bad man down,” executive producer John Stephens reminds TVLine. “History has shown us that Oswald’s a slippery fish. He’s a hard one to kill.”

With the action picking up weeks later, Nygma himself, meanwhile, “takes that next step towards becoming a supervillain,” including the acquisition of the Riddler nickname and the dapper wardrobe that goes with it.

Elsewhere, the emergence of Frank Gordon (Dexter‘s James Remar) will “provide us with an understanding of Jim’s emotional and historical connection, family-wise, to the Court of Owls,” Stephens says. “For Jim (Ben McKenzie) to realize that he has sort of a family legacy within the Court, to choose against that to take it down, helps to establish his journey — not in just this story, but beyond it, going forward.”

Bruce Wayne will encounter a shaman (played by Justified‘s “awesome” and “terrifying” Raymond J. Barry, pictured above) who “in a very iconic way” nudges the future Batman “a few steps further” toward his fate, the EP shares, while the infamous Ra’s al Ghul (Deep Space Nine‘s Alexander Siddig), we come to realize, “has been a presence in Bruce’s life for a long time” — a revelation that will set the stage for any possible Season 4.

Effusing about Siddig’s take on the role, Stephens says, “He kills it,” noting: “I don’t think we could have cast someone who looks more like the idea of Ra’s. Plus, he plays everything with an effortless dignity, and a kind of majesty that brings a lot to the character.”

As for the town’s terrible (and terribly sexy) twosome of “Babs and Tabs,” “There will be trouble in paradise” as Barbara (Erin Richards) continues her quest to become “the queen of Gotham,” only to be met with new obstacles. Says Stephens, “That friendly sisterhood that exists will become… distressed.”

Ahead of “Gotham” returning tonight from midseason hiatus, members of the cast gathered at an event in New York City, attended by CBR, to screen the “How the Riddler Got His Name” episode and answer questions from press. Cast members in attendances included Ben McKenzie, Cory Michael Smith, Robin Lord Taylor, Camren Bicondova, Erin Richards, Jessica Lucas, Drew Powell, Chris Chalk and Maggie Geha.

The Q&A started with a question about whether or not anyone was still waiting for answers about their characters’ past — and if they are, if they might be answered soon. Cory Michael Smith jokingly responded by saying, “all questions are answered, I’m done” when it comes to his character Edward Nygma before expanding on the new answers the character is looking for in this part of the season.

“Now that he’s finally claimed an identity, it doesn’t necessarily answer any deep questions about his identity,” Smith said. “He’s called himself something, but now begins the journey of finding out what that actually means to him. Who is this new person? This is someone who constantly struggles with identity.”

Smith continued by stating this struggle was manifested literally in season two when Ed started to see two of himself.

“He’s constantly searching for himself, but now it’s like, well he has this outfit, what does that mean? How does he behave now? How does he walk into a room or interact with people? How does he expect people to respond to him? So now begins a whole new journey of a new identity for him so I feel like it’s kind of a new beginning,” he said.

For these characters that we know so much about, are there any surprises for the audience, or a lot more that we haven’t seen yet? Camren Bicondova, who plays Selina Kyle, replied that Selina “always packs a good surprise.” For her, she always sees Selina going one way — and then she goes the complete opposite.

“I’ve gotten used to just letting her be and just go with the flow,” Bicondova said. “The way that she lives is survival and that’s how she lives her life is just doing what she needs to do to survive and throughout the rest of the season we’re going to see how she’s struggling to survive for the first time in a really long time because she’s dealing with teenage girl issues that she’s never dealt with before… by the end of the season she’s going to figure out that she wants something else and I’m excited for everyone to see that.”

While viewers may know the ultimate fates of many of the characters on the show based on the classic Batman stories, others aren’t quite as clear — such as Erin Richards’ character, Barbara Kean. There’s been quite a bit of speculation about whether or not Barbara might be Gotham’s version of Harley Quinn. Richards was asked if those comparisons to Harley are frustrating to her, and she said no, because she can understand it.

“I’ve sort of seen and been playing a little bit of that,” Richards replied. “Not as Harley Quinn, but in her own right the kind of madness. The thing about Harley Quinn I feel is that her madness, her crazy, is kind of joyous which Barbara has but Barbara is a lot more focused, especially in this part of the season. We’re going to see her really getting her teeth into kind of being the queen of Gotham which is what she wants and using the characters around her to get there and I think that she maybe has left behind that part of her that was the Harley Quinn type where it was just kind of madness for madness sake. Crazy and outlandish because that’s fabulous.”

“Now she’s got her mind set on this thing,” Richards continued. “The thing about Barbara is she’s always looking for her place in the world and she’s certainly found it. She’s like, ‘Oh my god I can run this thing!’ But then there might be a kind of very interesting thing happening at the end of the season.”

Barbara’s rise to the top may put her in the crosshairs of some characters, but maybe not Ed. When asked about everyone having a grudge against Ed and if they might align against him, Smith pointed out that Ed is not interested in running the underworld.

“He’s interested in finding his own identity,” Smith explained. “He’s on a journey of self so in terms of being in charge of things, he never wanted to be the mayor. He has no interest in taking the role which he easily could have done if he really wanted a power structure that way so it’s interesting.”

Smith did say alliances will be made though, and that Ed will run into Barbara, which will cause problems since he tortured Tabitha and Butch. Jessica Lucas, who plays Tabitha Galavan, added that it all brings her character and Butch much closer together and “stirs up a lot of trouble between Barbara and Tabitha.”

“That will get more and more intense as the season goes on,” Lucas said.

Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Penguin, agreed when Smith said Ed is not interested in running the world or being powerful.

“He’s interested in finding himself and weirdly that makes him all the more terrifying because that is unpredictable,” Taylor said. “He doesn’t even know who he is. We don’t even know the depravity where this character can go and that’s what’s motivating him. Whereas someone like the Penguin [is about] order, structure, king of Gotham, and let’s go. But that makes the Riddler all the more dangerous.”

When the cast was asked about potentially taking on Batman or a Gotham version of the hero one day, Bicondova said she loves the journey.

“Everybody knows Nygma becomes the Riddler. Everyone knows Oswald becomes Penguin. Everybody knows Selina Kyle becomes Catwoman and I think that’s what makes Gotham so fun and interesting is that nobody’s seen the journey so I feel like that cheesy saying ‘it’s the journey not the destination’ but really it is for me at least,” she explained.

Ben McKenzie, the actor behind Det. Jim Gordon, thinks that “as Bruce evolves the people around him are obviously evolving as well.” Smith later on added that there are a lot of stories to tell before Batman becomes Batman.

As for the cast’s favorite scene or storyline from this season, when asked the answers varied, though Taylor and Smith agreed the relationship between Riddler and Penguin was a highlight.

“I have to say the fact that we introduced a queer element to a traditional villain storyline, something that’s been around for a very long time, I thought that was very brave,” Taylor said. “I thought that even though it’s not the traditional trajectory that things tend to go I thought that really what we brought to it both Cory and I was a place of emotional honesty and the fact that that was embraced by both Warner Bros. and Fox I think is something that should be applauded and I’m really happy about that.”

Smith saw this season as an “embarrassment of riches” and that in addition to loving the queer storyline, he liked the fact that Chelsea Spack, who had played Kristin Kringle, returned to play Isabella. For Chris Chalk, who plays Lucius Fox, his favorite part was how fun it was working with McKenzie and Donal Logue who plays Det. Harvey Bullock while for Drew Powell, who portrays Butch Gilzean, it was the scene where Ed was torturing Butch and Tabitha.

“Getting my hand cut off was definitely a highlight, and reattached” Lucas added. “And working with the lovely Erin Richards all season long has been a treat I have to say.”

Richards revealed that one of her favorite scenes was one they shot the day before the Q&A and said it was “pretty epic,” taking about six hours and breaking a wall.

“Gotham” airs at 8 tonight on Fox.
