Julia Taylor Ross sobre el viaje de Maggie
Por Christy Spratlin | 21 Junio, 2017
Right from the very beginning Dr. Maggie Lin (Julia Taylor Ross) has been one of our favorite characters on Saving Hope. Her quirky personality and impressive ability to make us laugh in all kinds of awkward situations has always made her fun to watch. Maggie has struggled quite a bit over the years, both professionally and personally, but as the series nears its end Maggie seems to finally be finding her place. More opportunities have started coming her way professionally and with Sydney (Stacey Farber) she seems to have found someone that will truly make her happy.
Maggie is brilliantly played by Ross and The TV Junkies had the chance to talk with her earlier this week via email. Read on to see what she has to say about Maggie’s growth, her friendships with Zach (Benjamin Ayres) and Alex (Erica Durance) and her relationship with Sydney.
The TV Junkies: I have to say watching Maggie grow and change throughout the past five seasons has been one of our favorite things about Saving Hope. What have been some of your favorite parts of playing her?
Julia Taylor Ross: First of all, thank you for saying that! It brings me great joy to hear you enjoyed Maggie’s journey so much. My favorite parts of playing this role include pranks with Ben Ayres, my episode with Christine Horne, the Sydney/Maggie love story, endless laughter with Erica in the OR and at the end of long days. But I could list many more things! I’ll miss everyone a lot.
TTVJ: Maggie has always kind of stumbled through life (personally and professionally) never quite being able to find her place. Why do you think that she seems to have finally found that now?
JTR: I think “finding your place” comes with time and with growing up. It’s a natural progression, if you are working at it and curious about life and people, which I really think Maggie was.
TTVJ: Maggie was a part of two very important friendships on the show – one with Zach and one with Alex. We don’t see enough friendships on TV, so why were those so important to show and what was it like building those with Ben and Erica?
JTR: I am so happy to hear you picked up on this. I agree that friendships are rare on TV, especially platonic friendships with two characters who might easily be love interests. I was so happy that the writers made Zach and Maggie’s friendship blossom in the way that it did. It made for a more complex dynamic at first and then an ease and a trust later in the show. I LOVED the Alex/Maggie friendship. It was wonderful to navigate how these two women balanced their professional and personal relationships and supported each other through trying times. I look back at the pilot now and see how much their relationship grew.
TTVJ: This week’s episode is very special for Maggie. What can you tell us about it and what the future holds for Maggie?
JTR: This episode is special for Maggie because it is her “Aha” moment — she realizes that she loves Sydney and is ready to give their relationship a go. It’s lovely that it’s Zach who facilitates that moment.
TTVJ: We’ve seen Maggie and Sydney go through a lot in their relationship. Why was now finally the right time for them to be together?
JTR: So many things and people kept standing in the way of them being together! But they have finally found their way back to one another and are ready to commit.
TTVJ: What have been some of your favorite aspects of Maggie and Sydney’s relationship and how it developed?
JTR: Aside from making an amazing friend in Stacey Farber off camera, I loved that they started off with a bit of friction professionally and slowly worked their way towards a romantic relationship. They have taught each other a lot professionally and personally. Also, who doesn’t love a will-they-won’t-they dynamic?!
TTVJ: The Saving Hope writers made a commitment to LGBTQ characters when they signed the Lexa Pledge last season. Did you feel the effects of that play out at all through Maggie’s arc?
JTR: I have always felt that the writers were committed to this part of Maggie’s identity and we always leaned into it with her love stories. She has dated men on the show, she has dated women on the show, and she is looking for the right person. The final act is about her finally committing to Sydney and no longer being afraid of love.
