The zombie apocalypse is nigh!

In Tuesday night’s Season 3 finale of iZombie, the secret of zombies’ existence threatens to spill out into the world at large, as Liv (Rose McIver) continues to investigate the origins of the deadly Aleutian flu outbreak in Seattle.

Will the Aleutian flu turn everybody into zombies? And how is Fillmore Graves, the zombie private military outfit, involved?

Last week’s episode ended with a bang, literally, as a house full of Fillmore Graves soldiers died in a bombing by a crazed zombie truther. But don’t expect COO Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) to go on the warpath against humans, creator Rob Thomas tells Yahoo TV.

“Chase can’t start just killing humans willy nilly in the streets of Seattle, so he isn’t going to start an all-out war,” Thomas explains. “He isn’t even quite sure who Harley is acting in conjunction with.”

But with more humans learning about zombies, and the zombies riled up and defensive, something will have to give. That’s exactly what Thomas had in mind as he and the writers approached this finale.

“We wanted to have a complete reboot. That’s what we’ve been gearing toward,” he says.

“We’ve known that we wanted to get to this day where zombies became an open secret, that people became aware of zombies living among them. And suddenly, there would zombie clubs and a zombie district. Then, we would have to reinvent things. So we’ve been aiming for this day.”

In other words: Get ready for Z-Day!

iZombie airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesday’s iZombie finale.

Welcome to the brave new iZombie world.

The CW drama’s season finale on Tuesday set up what will be a very different Season 4, with the undead out in the open. But before we get into what that means for Liv & Co., let’s recap just how zombies came out of hiding.

After discovering that a faction inside of Fillmore Graves, led by Carey Gold, was responsible for Wally and Vivian’s deaths, as well as the Aleutian flu outbreak, Chase Graves shot his right-hand woman dead. But it was too late to abandon her Plan B, so Chase committed to it, inserting zombie blood into the flu vaccine. As a result, every person who got the shot — Clive’s newly in-the-know ex Dale Bozzio included — began to turn into a member of the undead.

Via a news broadcast, Chase revealed the truth to the world, assuring the human population that Seattle’s many brain-eaters will stay put — as long as some of the dead donate their noggins to keep them fed. (Carey’s plan, it turns out, was to create more zombies, not procure more brains, because she viewed Plan A, aka Zombie Island, as a cowardly death sentence.)

Elsewhere, Major had Chase turn him back into a zombie following the massacre of his buddies and Natalie, while Ravi decided to test a zombie vaccine on himself by having Liv scratch him.

Below, executive producer Rob Thomas previews the show’s new direction, and why it’s a challenge for Liv and Major. Plus, the EP teases Ravi’s “fun” storyline, Blaine’s new venture and more.

TVLINE | Having the citizens of Seattle — and the rest of the country — learn about zombies really opens up the world of the show. What are you excited to explore with that?
Oh my God, the whole thing! It’s going to be a radical change. Zombie-ism is out in the open, so it’s going to be the top news story in the world. Seattle just became, effectively, a nuclear power. In fact, each of the 10,000 zombies now living in Seattle is its own sort of nuclear threat, if he or she wanders out of the city and scratches someone. I’m really interested in playing the dynamic of humans and zombies trying to live side-by-side. It’s going to create all sorts of issues this coming season.

Liv and Clive are still going to be solving murders, but now they’ll be solving cases of murdered humans. Fillmore Graves will have their own detectives solving cases of murdered zombies. All of the detectives in the Seattle homicide division will have their own zombies helping them solve murder cases because they all understand the benefits of being able to use the memories of murder victims.

It’s all going to feel very different. It’s going to feel a lot like West Berlin — God, we’ve used a lot of analogies — [and] like every day, you’re in the middle of the Cuban missile crisis. There’s going to be politicians across the globe wanting to nuke Seattle. Essentially, Seattle is holding a half million humans hostage. If you want to kill the 10,000 zombies in Seattle, you have to kill half a million innocent humans, too.

TVLINE | We know what Major’s part is in all of this via his job at Fillmore Graves. Does what’s happening push Liv into a more public role as a zombie?
Yeah. Fillmore Graves is urging all zombies to tan and dye. They don’t want zombies to be recognizable, because they don’t want the government to be able to tell the difference between the humans and the zombies out there. So Liv is still going to stand out, although Liv’s not going to be the only zombie in Seattle who’s refusing to tan and dye. We think about one in 20 are going to rock that look. But she’s also in an interesting job. One of the long arcs is she’s going to make a name for herself, but I want to hold the details of how she’s going to do that.

TVLINE | Without giving away what happens, can you talk about the decision to possibly have Ravi become a zombie? Was there a lot of debate internally in the writers’ room about whether you should make yet another character part of the undead?
Yeah, we debated that a ton — and I’m not saying he is a zombie. That will be revealed right away [in the Season 4 premiere]. We will not make the audience wait for that, and we will promise that it did not kill him. [Laughs] Ravi will be around for Season 4. The results will be fun. We’re actually pretty excited about what happens to Ravi.

TVLINE | We’ve seen the challenges and the downfall of zombie/human romance before. Is there more hope for Clive and Dale than there was for Liv and Major?
I can’t promise that the result will be any different. The thing that we wanted to do is not tell the exact same story. I’m not saying that Bozzio and Clive will have a happier ending to their human/zombie relationship than Major and Liv, but I will tell you that it will go a different direction.

TVLINE | Did I sense some disappointment in Liv’s voice about Major’s decision to become a zombie again?
Yes.

iZombie RecapTVLINE | What is their dynamic going forward, then?
There’s going to be a political divide between the two of them going into Season 4. We keep using these analogies in which this new version of Seattle is like Israel, the humans are Palestinians, and that Major is lining up sort of in the [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu camp, and Liv can’t quite deal with it.

TVLINE | How does Blaine feel about this new world order?
We keep calling [him] Rick from Casablanca. He’s the man who can get things. He’s going to profit from this new world. He is going to run the black market. Blaine is going to open a new restaurant. He’s going to be doing very well.

TVLINE | Can the new restaurant be called Meat Cute Again?
[Laughs] I believe the name of the restaurant is going to be Romero’s.

- El "Día D" llega a "iZombie" (comicbook):
El "Día D" llega a "iZombie"
Por Jenna Anderson | 27 Junio, 2017

Major spoilers for the season three finale of iZombie below!

Throughout iZombie's third season, many characters have been anticipating - and in some cases, avoiding - what has become known as 'D-Day.'

Discovery Day, the day that humans become aware of the existence of zombies, has arrived for the citizens of Seattle. After creating a widespread panic about the Aleutian flu, Filmore Graves injected vials of the vaccination with zombie blood, turning all of those who were given it into zombies.

Liv Moore (Rose McIver) convinced local newsman Johnny Frost (Daran Norris) to announce the existence of zombies due to the vaccine, thus preventing more humans from getting injected. Soon after, Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) sent out a video message to panicking citizens. In it, he revealed to the country that zombies are real, and would continue to remain confined to Seattle if the rest of America donated the brains of their deceased to Filmore Graves.

According to iZombie showrunner Rob Thomas, this brings the larger world of iZombie into uncharted territory in the show's fourth season.

"Here’s what essentially Chase Graves is saying to the rest of the planet," Thomas explained in an interview with ComicBook. "We’re going to take Seattle, we’re going to tan and dye, you can’t tell us from the humans. And if you want to nuke us, you’re going to have to nuke a half a million humans as well. There are 10,000 zombies, any of whom could start the apocalypse, so the ball is in your court."

While that conflict is pretty tense, Thomas argues that it almost could've been worse. The showrunner argued that Liv's decision to make Johnny say the announcement did have a positive effect, despite Chase still enacting that larger D-Day plot.

"At the end of the day, I sort of feel like Liv’s decision is trumped by Chase running that video," Thomas revealed. "What Liv might have accomplished is, rather than there being 20,000 zombies in Seattle, there are 10,000 zombies -- so if she can take credit for something, it’s that. Liv probably should deserve the credit for saving a good number of people from turning into zombies."

Nevertheless, the finale's closing moments showed iZombie's drastically 'new reality' already in action. Fans will just have to wait and see whether it can be sustained in season 4 - and what that will mean for Liv and the rest of Team Z.

Liv (Rose McIver) uncovers a shocking truth with far-reaching consequences. A reeling Major (Robert Buckley) looks to the future, and Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) gets closure. Meanwhile, Blaine (David Anders) makes a business proposal. Rahul Kohli and Aly Michalka also star.

The episode was written by Rob Thomas and directed by Dan Etheridge.

iZombie airs on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. "Looking For Mr. Goodbrain, Part 2" premieres on June 27.

Rob Thomas adelanta una Season 4 radicalmente diferente
Por Russ Burlingame | 27 Junio, 2017

Warning: spoilers ahead for "Looking For Mr. Goodbrain, Part 2," the season 3 finale of iZombie.

Seismic changes rocked iZombie in tonight's season 3 finale, and when the show returns in early 2018, nothing will be the same.

"Every season on iZombie, we always start from an ending: 'what is the kick-ass ending of this season, and then let's reverse-engineer it from there,'" executive producer Rob Thomas told ComicBook.com during an interview last week.

This time around? The kick-ass ending was to reveal the truth about zombies to the world at large, and announce that they were planning on staking out Seattle as the capital of the zombie homeland.

Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) promised that zombies would not go after living humans, but urged Americans to elect to donate their brains in order to keep Seattle's zombies -- now numbering in the thousands thanks to tainted flu vaccines -- fed.

"We're going to pick up next season three months later, and the United States has walled off Seattle like it's West Berlin," Thomas teased. "Chase is hanging on by a very thin thread; it's like every day is the Cuban missile crisis. Brains are coming in, but they aren't getting as many as they expected, and zombies are hungry. In fact, the opening sequence in season four is going to follow a brain from the moment a man dies somewhere in Texas to the moment it reaches the brain tube and is ingested by a Seattle zombie. In fact, it's even going to start earlier than that. We're going to see a commercial on TV; we want to get someone like Laura Linney making a commercial pleading for the people of the United States to sign their brain donor card."

As fans might remember from True Blood, though, bringing the truth to light is no guarantee that Liv and other zombies can live peacefully alongside humanity. In fact, it might exacerbate things and create larger and more aggressive groups in the vein of the "zombie truthers" seen in season 3.

"Seattle is going to be like living in West Berlin, and inside here, there are going to be these humans who are willing to try to live peacefully side-by-side with zombies, there are going to be humans who are incredibly resentful of zombies," Thomas continued. "We had a lot of fun trying to name a human terrorist organization; rejected names include Up With People and The Human Shield. There are going to be zombies who consider eating humans when they get hungry. It is a city barely under control, and meanwhile, they're still trying to have buses run on time and mail get delivered and murders get solved, and Chase Graves is trying to keep it running. Liv is still going to be solving murders, but the city itself is going to feel very, very different."

iZombie airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

- ¿Hacia dónde va ‘iZombie’ tras esa salvaje Finale? (uproxx):
¿Hacia dónde va ‘iZombie’ tras esa salvaje Finale?
Por Alan Sepinwall - 27.06.17

iZombie just concluded its third season with a pretty big change to its status quo. I reviewed the finale here, and I did a brief email interview with co-creator Rob Thomas about why they made the change and what the show is now, coming up just as soon as we watch some TV while my clothes dry…

What were your expectations of the series’ likelihood for renewal when you came up with this ending, and how much have you guys talked through what a post D-Day world is like, and what the show is now?

The writing staff has talked about Season 4 being the season where we launched into a post D-Day universe for a long time — maybe since season one.

Admittedly, we might’ve thought we’d be 60 episodes into the series rather than rather than 45. We didn’t know we’d be doing these 13-episode seasons, but this has been the plan. We didn’t arrive at it, because we thought we might be cancelled, and we thought we’d go out with a bang. We’ve felt confident there was going to be a season 4 for a long time.

There will still be a case of the week in post D-Day Seattle though things will work a bit differently. There will be a detective at Fillmore Graves who handles murder cases when the victim is a zombie, but the Seattle PD will handle all murdered human cases. Also, every Seattle homicide detective will get to work with a zombie helper. Clive won’t be the only one with the benefit of a partner with visions. Chase Graves will be trying very hard to make the trains run on time in the walled city of Seattle. He promised the citizens that mail would be delivered, garbage would be collected, etc.

Despite his best efforts, the crime rate is going to go up significantly. Clive and Liv will have their hands full with murder cases.

Season 4 will ask the question of whether humans and zombies can live side by side when humans know of zombies’ existence. It will come as no surprise that it will be a very bumpy road.

Will terminally ill people be flocking to Seattle to be scratched?

Much will be made of people flocking to Seattle to be scratched because they’re ill or just plain old. Chase Graves will have to put an end to zombies scratching humans as they are barely receiving enough brains from their fellow Americans to feed the zombies they already have. An underground railroad of sorts will spring up that will sneak humans into Seattle hoping to be scratched. If these humans trust the wrong people, they’re liable to be served up at Blaine’s upscale cemetery-to-table restaurant, Romero’s.

Did you feel the old incarnation of the show had run its course?

I like telling seasons as though each one is a book in an anthology series. I feel like I could have had more episodes in any given season, but I’m giddy about the upcoming season. I’ve been eager to get here. I feel like there’s a fun story everywhere I look in this new version of Seattle.

"I can't wait to see what the payoff is," Robert Buckley tells us of what will happen with his iZombie character Major in the wake of the show's Season 3 finale.

[Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers for "Looking for Mr. Goodbrain, Part 2," the June 27 Season 3 finale of iZombie.]

The undead secret is out on iZombie: In the aftermath of Fillmore Graves infecting a portion of the Seattle population with the zombie virus, the world is now aware that the walking dead are among them.

While some of the humans are freaking out (or fleeing the city), Major (Robert Buckley) took a different approach—prior to the wider spread outbreak, he opted to become a zombie again, in order to rejoin Fillmore Graves.

We spoke with Buckley about Major's big decision, how he might react if Ravi (Rahul Kohli) becomes a zombie and more.

What was Major's mindset when he decided to become a zombie again?
Robert Buckley: One thing we know about Major is he has a breaking point. He is a good guy until a certain point. At the end of Season 1, we saw him be completely terrorized at that point, and he completely lost it. At the end of this year, there was another Greek tragedy unfolding in his life: Natalie's killed, his buddies are killed; most of the happiness he has in his life is taken out in one fell swoop. I think he sees it as 'I've lost everything I had, so I'm going to dedicate myself to righting this wrong.'

While making this decision, what consideration does he take for what Liv (Rose McIver) and Ravi might think?
I don't think he takes anyone else's feelings or reactions into consideration. I think it's one of those things where it's so devastating, you have tunnel vision. He didn't have the opportunity to really sit and think about the implications of his actions. I think he saw something terrible happen, and he wants to do something to take care of the people who did it.

What are his feelings toward Chase Graves (Jason Dohring), who is now leading Fillmore Graves?
I don't know if Major has completely made up his mind. I think he's seen enough to trust him and to be on his side. I think it becomes pretty clear that there is a line in the sand with zombies and not zombies, and it's getting quite hostile. He wants to be with the zombies. Whether he loves Chase or not, Chase is the gatekeeper for being back on that team.

We only saw a nanosecond of his reaction to the news that Chase and Liv slept together in the last episode. Does Major have feelings about that at this point? Or are the other circumstances of the world making it less of a priority?
I don't think that one impacted him. At the end of the day, Liv and Major love each other, and it's a situation where they just want to see the other person happy. Which we saw with Justin [this season]—Major was no longer a zombie, and there wasn't a chance for he and Liv to be together. He wanted her to be happy, so he bowed out and gave his blessings to that happening. I think the Chase Graves thing didn't really faze him.

Major was told he would have to take out humans, and at the end of the finale, we saw his first bit of that. What do you think this may do to him now that he's actually in that position?
I don't know! That's one of the things I'm excited about. When I read the season finale, I remember thinking, 'Where are we going to go from here?' There are so many possibilities. There is so much opportunity in this new world they've created. I still don't really know where Major's headed and where his head is at. I'm in the same boat as you and the rest of the viewers. I'm excited to see where [co-creator] Rob [Thomas] and the writers go with it.

Ravi took the potential zombie vaccine he created and had Liv scratch him to test its effectiveness. What do you think Major's reaction will be when he finds out?
Just because he's his buddy, he'd be rooting for him to not be a zombie. But on the same token, it would make the food situation at the house easier [if he turned]. So, I really think there is an argument to be made on both sides.

The way the season ended, Major could be off on his own for a bit next season. Given how close you all are offscreen, what conversations will you have with the writers about that potential detour?
I don't really have a lot of input with them. The good thing about our writers' room is that Rob, [co-creator] Diane [Ruggiero-Wright] and the whole room—they're such a talented bunch. It's never a concern about what they have planned or what they have happening; it's exciting to get each script as they come. But I've never worried, 'Where are they going with this?' Even if there's an episode or two where I don't know where it's going, I'm never concerned about this. I can't wait to see what the payoff is.

iZombie has been renewed for Season 4 and will return in Midseason on The CW.

The jig is up! The news is out! In the Season 3 finale of iZombie, the world found out zombies exist. In the face of possible bioterrorism, the residents of Seattle rushed to inoculate themselves against a deadly disease, only to find themselves infected with the zombie virus instead. Anyone who received the vaccine — including FBI agent Dale Bozzio and newscaster Johnny Frost — almost immediately began to turn. Liv quickly realized D-Day, or Discover Day, was upon them and forced Frost to broadcast the symptoms of zombism, thus revealing zombies to the population at large — and bringing Season 3 to a close.

But where does iZombie go from here? Fortunately, executive producer and co-creator Rob Thomas was on hand to answer that question and several others. Speaking to CBR, Thomas revealed the government’s reaction to Seattle’s zombie outbreak, what that cliffhanger means for fan-favorite character Ravi Chakrabarti, when Season 4 will pick up, how the show will maintain its procedural storylines and more.

CBR: Was that massive zombie outbreak always part of the plan for iZombie? How did that develop?

Rob Thomas: It was, yes. There was some debate about when it would happen, and we always kind of thought the end of Season 3, but admittedly we didn’t know that we would be doing these 13-episode seasons. We thought we might be doing longer seasons, so there was some discussion about pushing it to Season 4, but I’m pretty happy that we kind of went with the end of Season 3.

Chase Graves’ broadcast really opened iZombie‘s world. Could we see the show start to incorporate settings beyond Seattle?

That’s tough for us! You know, we have discussed a couple storylines. Seattle is going to become a walled city in Season 4, sort of like West Berlin. We’re going to play it that the U.S. government has put up a wall to keep all the zombies in Seattle. We have discussed a couple storylines where characters have to get out of the city and get certain items to the government, but our shoot is in Vancouver and there’s a certain look to the Pacific Northwest that’s hard to get away from. So we might to be able to get an establishing shot of some other city and then shoot a scene in an office and say we’re in Washington D.C., but it would be hard for us to say we’re doing a road trip across the Southwest U.S. That would just be too tough for us to fake, being where we are. I think you might see scenes where we say we’re out of Seattle, but it won’t feel like a road trip. It won’t feel like one of those going-cross-country zombie movies or TV shows.

In light of the zombie outbreak, how will the show maintain its procedural nature?

Well, the city still has to function, so Chase Graves is trying to keep Seattle running and the mayor’s office is trying to keep the city running. I mean, even in that video, he says the trash is still going to get picked up, the mail’s going to get delivered… Things are going to be a little weird, but they are going to keep happening. Fillmore-Graves is actually going to handle murdered zombies; they’re going to have their own detective handling murdered zombies cases, and we’re going to see that detective every once in a while. The Seattle police department will still handle murdered humans, and — in fact — they’re going to bring on a couple more zombies who work with the other detectives. Liv will continue to work with Clive, so things will have a slightly different bent but murders still have to be solved. It’s a city in crisis, so you could argue there’d even be more murders, because it’s a city of unrest right now, a lot of families in crisis. A lot of crazy stuff is going on in the city. So that element of the show, we kind of need to keep. Part of the joy of the show is Liv eating a new brain each week and putting on this new personality and having whatever new talents or skills she has. That’s part of the magic of the show that we want to keep.

Just how worried should we be about Ravi?

You should know that he’s just about everyone’s favorite character or second favorite character, and we’re not going to kill him off. We know that he survives Liv’s scratch. So Ravi is not dead. I will promise everyone that. The vaccination he took will have some side effects, and people will get to see them in [season] 4 [episode] 1, so we do not make people wait see what happens from Liv’s scratch and that vaccination.

Because so many crazy things happened in the finale, Liv didn’t seem to have much time to really digest her new reality. Will that be something that’s explored in Season 4?

Well, we’re going to pick up three months later, so she will have had time to digest it quite a bit more. We will see where she has landed with it. One of the big things we’re going to be playing is that… Fillmore-Graves has become a bit of a wedge issue between her and Major. You know, Major is pretty fully aboard the Fillmore-Graves train. He loves being there; he thinks they’re doing the right thing, that he’s on the right side and that Chase Graves is a great guy and a terrific leader. I think Liv is becoming less and less enamored with Fillmore-Graves and kind of thinks they’re right-wing bullies.

Clive and Peyton are now humans in a zombie world. Could that impact their dynamic?

No. I mean, they are humans with a group of friends who are zombies with a lot of zombies around them, but — in our estimation – there are ten thousand zombies in Seattle and a half million humans. So it’s really still a mostly-human city. Zombies are still the exception most places. They are a small minority, although everyone is very aware of them now. So I don’t think it’ll affect their dynamic. You may see a little bit more of them together this year, just from a little bit of the stories we’re planning, but I don’t think it’s because they’re two humans.

We saw the return of both Dale and Mr. Boss this season. How will they factor into Season 4?

We’re going to see a lot of Dale. I’m not sure if Mr. Boss is or not. Right now, we don’t have any plans for Mr. Boss, but Bozzio is going to be back quite a bit. She’s going to be the new Lieutenant because she can’t go back to the FBI, because she’s walled in in Seattle. She can’t leave Seattle because she’s a zombie. She can’t go back to the FBI, so she takes a job and so she’s the new Lieutenant. Technically, she is Clive’s boss at the police station.

Expected to return to The CW next year for its fourth season, iZombie is produced by Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, the creators of Veronica Mars, and stars Rose McIver as Olivia Moore, Malcolm Goodwin as CliveBabinaux, Rahul Kohli as Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, Robert Buckley as Major Lilywhite, David Anders as Blaine DeBeers, Aly Michalka as Peyton Charles and newcomer Jason Dohring as Chase Graves.

“Dont be a dick.”

Seeing as that was the last line of the season 3 finale of iZombie, we were prepared to use it back to showrunner Rob Thomas when he evaded our questions about what happens to our favorite members of the undead in the aftermath of Discovery Day and Liv (Rose McIver) scratching Ravi (Rahul Kohli), possibly turning him into a zombie. But we didn’t have to use it. Much like the episode itself, Thomas did not disappoint; instead, he loaded us up with all kinds of season 4 details to help us through the long wait until Liv and co. are back on the air.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Even though we’ve been building to it all season, I was a bit surprised to see Discovery Day, the day when humans learned zombies are real, come so early in the series. Can you talk about the decision to go there at this juncture?
ROB THOMAS: I really like thinking of each season as an enclosed story, like each one is a book in a series, and I’m so excited about what we can tell in season 4. I’m excited to get to those stories…. I don’t believe there’s any show in which zombies and humans live together in a city, and I think it’s going to be interesting. There’s so many comparisons we’ve been using in the writers’ room. It’s like zombies and humans living together in West Berlin in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Because, in the three months between the end of season 3 and season 4 begins, the U.S. government is going to wall off Seattle so it’s going to have that Berlin feeling. It sort of turns Seattle into this independent quasi-nuclear power: If zombies go flooding out of Seattle, they have the power to end the world, essentially.

That sounds really timely and intense. Is the government going to be rounding up zombies that leave Seattle?
Both Fillmore-Graves and the U.S. government would be working in conjunction to keep all zombies in Seattle. It’s in everyone’s best interest. There’s a mutually assured destruction there. And there’s going to be a No Man’s Land. So, essentially no sides want zombies to escape. And, if you’re a zombie, brains are available in Seattle; brains are not available outside of Seattle unless you kill humans or grave-rob.

What will be the brain source in Seattle?
In Seattle, Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) has told America, “Give us your brains.” And we’re going to start season 4 with a celebrity commercial reminding Americans to sign their brain donor cards. I think Chase Graves says if just one in 10 Americans donate their brains, everything is fine and dandy.

That still seems like a pretty low percentage.
I did the math on this. I actually sat down and I don’t know how good my math is, but I did rough it out with death rates and tried to actually figure out how many brains they would need. So if one in 10 Americans donates their brains, Seattle should be able to operate just fine. In fact, episode 401, the first one back, because I want to illustrate it for the TV audience, we’re going to open on a montage of how the whole brain system works, starting with a guy dying, showing the brain harvesting, showing it going on a shipping container, showing it getting to Seattle, going to a brain processing plant, getting put into to a tube, going to a dispensary, going to a Zombie With a Brain card, and being consumed. I think it’s important that the audience knows how it’s supposed to work.

Have you cast a fun cameo for that celebrity PSA?
I’ll tell you who we want to get: We want Laura Linney. She is the perfect person to help ask America for brains.

Getting back to this episode, I so enjoyed the platonic “I love you” exchange between Liv and Ravi, but I worry there are shippers out there who will cling to that.
They are wrong.

Ha! Good. Now, are there going to be any side effects to Ravi making himself a guinea pig for his own zombie virus vaccination?
Yes, there are going to be side effects. You will see those in episode 401. We will not make you wait. You will see them right away.

With Major (Robert Buckley) in such a different headspace in this finale, it seems like we’re a long way from he and Liv getting back together, even though they’re both zombies now. Is there hope for them in season 4?
I never want to say that there’s no hope for them because I think that they would do anything for each other at any time. But they are on opposite sides of a political divide as this season moves forward, and there are going to be some political wedge issues that are forcing them apart over the course of the season. Major has found a home in Fillmore-Graves and Liv becomes in increasingly disenchanted with how Fillmore-Graves is run and what they are decreeing and how they manage the city. That is going to put them at increasing odds. It’s going to be the topic that they can’t discuss without fighting. I don’t want to imply that season 4 is going to be one long fight between Liv and Major because that won’t be the case. There’s still a lot of affection between the two and they’ll still be jokey and fun until they get on that one topic, and occasionally they will battle that out.

Can you talk about that cheeky scene showing Baracus (Kurt Evans) in a very George W. Bush-like situation, reading to schoolchildren as he receives news of Discovery Day reaching a violent head?
I don’t know what you’re talking about. [Laughs] Cheeky was exactly what we were going for…. Yeah, the nod to a certain government official — we thought we were being cute, and now, I find myself longing for George Bush, wishing we could have George Bush back in the White House and remembering him fondly. So I sort of regret making fun of that moment. It did make us all laugh in the writers’ room at the time, allowing Peyton (Aly Michalka) to be the person who whispered in his ear, recreating that moment.

iZombie will return for a fourth season on The CW.

Warning: Spoilers for the iZombie Season 3 finale below. Read at your own risk!

The world of iZombie will never be the same. In the Season 3 finale, the zombie cat got out of the bag after Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) had Fillmore Graves employees inject all the flu vaccines in Seattle with zombie blood, creating a mass outbreak of zombie-ism. But before Chase could gain full control of the narrative (and the population), Liv (Rose McIver) had Johnny Frost (Daran Norris), a fledgling zombie himself, break the news on TV.

Although Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) and Peyton (Aly Michalka) weren't injected with the vaccine before the truth came out, Clive's former partner and lady love Bozzio (Jessica Harmon) wasn't so lucky and is now a card-carrying member of Team Z. Major (Robert Buckley) also decided to give up his human life when he purposefully got scratched by Chase in order to rejoin the Fillmore Graves forces, effectively pitting Major against his more centrist friends.

As for Ravi (Rahul Kohli), his fate remains unknown. After the zombie outbreak went public, he convinced Liv to scratch him in order to test out a new vaccine he had created. Whether his vaccine works or Ravi is about to develop some very intense cravings for human brains is a question that will be hanging over us until iZombie returns in 2018.

The iZombie cast needs your help to make a musical episode happen

Fortunately, we won't be without any hints about what's to come. TVGuide.com spoke with creator Rob Thomas about what this new zombie world order means for the show, Ravi's heartbreaking decision and more of our biggest burning questions about Season 4.

Zombies are public knowledge now, which means that the way the show has operated for three seasons will be turned on its head.
Rob Thomas: Actually, and this is a bit of a spoiler, we find out that the finale was just a dream episode and it just goes right back to the way -- no, I'm kidding. This season, Season 4, zombies are absolutely public knowledge.

How will this twist affect the series moving forward?
Thomas: Oh, it's a brave new world. We're in week two right now of breaking Season 4 and god, it's craziness because we're doing things like thinking, OK, what does the new justice system look like? What does the zombie prison system look like? Are there zombie-only restaurants? It is like having to build a new world. Some of this we thought about last [season] but we're having to drill down on a lot of these things. And they're really interesting questions like, how many people would flood out of Seattle and interestingly, who would flood in? Like, would old people rush to Seattle because they would want to be scratched and not die? Would terminally ill people come to Seattle because they didn't want to die? Would brave humans come to Seattle because suddenly it would be like Detroit and you could get a $3 million home for $20,000? What are all the things that would happen if this really happened? And we're trying to figure out answers to all those questions and figure out our new reality. And how would Chase Graves manage all of this and how would the U.S. government handle all of it? And how would America respond to a city that had sort of declared its own independence? And in essence, Seattle is kind of its own weird, nuclear power. So all of this has occupied all of our discussion time and it's funny sometimes what we get paid to do. A group of writers sitting around a room deciding what happens if Seattle becomes a free zombie city.

With the zombie secret out of the bag and the knowledge there's a working cure somewhere out in the world, it feels like the show is closer to the end than the beginning. Are you going into next season thinking it will be the last or are you open to continuing beyond Season 4?
Thomas: Oh, definitely not. We're definitely not thinking that this is going to be the last. You said there was a working zombie cure out in the world. We're not thinking there's a working zombie cure out in the world. There are 17 vials of a cure somewhere and nobody seems to know where they are, but they're definitely not out in the world. In fact, as far as I know, I'm the only person who knows where those cures are in the world. They might pop up at some time, but nobody knows where those 17 syringes are with the cure.

I loved the introduction of Jason as Chase this season and how he shook things up. Will Jason return next season full-time, and what can you say about how Chase and Fillmore Graves factor into this new world?
Thomas: Jason came in, he was sort of a back-up plan [after Andrea Savage's show got picked up] but he kind of did us a solid there. But yes, you will be seeing him throughout Season 4. But [Chase is] trying to hold things together. Politically, he's got people on his left and people on his right. He's holding things together by a thread. Now, he's certainly taken a pretty militant stance, but he's got a city full of people who aren't pleased with him. He's created 10,000 new zombies who aren't particularly happy that they are zombies now. They're essentially being used as a bargaining chip. He's got a city full of humans who aren't happy that, among other things, the Seahawks have left town and that some people in the U.S. want to nuke Seattle. And so he's under a ton of pressure.

Ravi chose to have Liv scratch him in a really emotional scene. How soon into Season 4 will we learn whether his vaccine worked or not? And what does that decision say about him and his relationship with Liv?
Thomas: You'll find out in Episode 1. You'll find out right away what happened. And yeah, I think they are -- you know, it's funny. I was about to say best friends, but I don't want to take away anything from her relationship with Peyton. Certainly, it's her best guy friend. I think they care deeply for each other. They would go to the end of the world for each other. They tell each other they love each other in that moment, which they have never done before. So I think there's something very deep between them. It felt like the right time to say that out loud. My producing partner Dan [Etheridge] directed that final episode. He was the one who asked me to do a callback to the first episode in that scene. I hadn't written that in initially, but he thought it would be fun to have him call back to the pilot and his discovery that she was a zombie and take us back to that moment, which I think played nicely.

When Major and Liv thought they were both going to be human again, they seemed excited at the possibility of getting back together. Now that they are both zombies, how much will we see that romance be explored again season?
Thomas: Politics will create a divide between Major and Liv this season. Major will be a gung ho defender of Fillmore Graves. Liv will become more and more disenchanted by what she sees as a heartless occupying army. Season 4 won't be one big fight, but there's enough of a gulf that it will get in the way of romance.

Peyton was investigating this big murder conspiracy all season and now she's the Chief-of-Staff to the first zombie mayor of the first zombie city. Where do those storylines take her in Season 4?
Thomas: She'll have her fingers in a couple of pies next season. Half of the prosecutors working in Seattle escaped the city before the wall went up, and Peyton will get called in on occasion to fill in when the case load becomes such that they need an extra hand. Working the mayor's office, she will be on the front line of mediating disputes between zombies and humans. Turns out humans don't want their children going to school with zombies, or sharing restrooms, or sharing city parks. There is a lot of work to be done.

Over the course of the season, we saw Blaine (David Anders) really return to his evil roots. Do you think the inevitable conclusion of his arc is to come full circle and have another showdown with Liv and the gang or is redemption still on the table?
Thomas: If it were Blaine's fate to go full circle, I wouldn't admit it. We'd just have to watch it happen. I will say that Blaine is like a pig in slop this season. New Seattle is the perfect city for him. When there's a thriving black market, odds are, Blaine is doing well. And the black market is alive and well in Seattle. Whole brains are worth their weight in gold and Blaine has a pipeline to them and a handshake deal with Chase Graves to leave him alone. He's raking it in.

In a heartbreaking twist, Bozzio was turned into a zombie. What can you say about her place in the show next season and how Clive will cope with her transformation?
Thomas: I can say that Clive and Bozzio are together as the season begins. They've been making things work for the past three months even though they can't have sex. They're going to have to go through the same things Liv and Major had to go through. The thing I'll promise is that they'll make different choices than Liv and Major made, and we'll see how those choices turn out. I think we'll watch the relationship evolve across the season. We're going to slow play it, feel it out, see how it feels.

iZombie Season 3 heads to Netflix on July 1. It will return to the CW for Season 4 in 2018.

Can zombies and humans co-exist peacefully?

That was the question set up in the Season 3 finale of iZombie, which finally blew open the secret that zombies exist. The entire world knows — so, now what?

In the finale, Liv (Rose McIver) discovered that the Aleutian flu outbreak had been caused by zombies craving a bigger pool of brains to eat. It was a plan hatched by a Fillmore Graves executive who was trying to pull a coup over her boss, Chase Graves (Jason Dohring).

After taking care of the traitor, Chase took matters into his own hands by infecting the flu vaccine with the blood of zombies. To warn the public, Liv spilled the beans on local television. And Chase followed up by announcing that Fillmore Graves would feed all new zombies and accept brain donations from across the country.

But despite his overture, tensions between zombies and humans remained high. A re-zombified Major (Robert Buckley) is forced to take action against a group of rioting humans.

The secret of zombies has been the driving factor of the series since it began. Now that everything is in the open, iZombie will see something of a reboot, as creator Rob Thomas tells Yahoo TV.

“As a showrunner, I like seasons being new stories. I like reinvention. I like progression. It gets boring to me if you just keep doing the same thing each week,” he says.

And while Thomas and the writers considered stretching out the big reveal over two seasons, “You don’t know how many seasons you’re going to get.”

The big reveal opens up many new possibilities for the show.

“I’ve been very excited about the stories we can tell in a universe where humans and zombies co-exist because it’s a story I haven’t seen told,” he says. “We already felt like we were doing a fresh zombie show — like, we are the only zom-com-rom-dram.

“Now we’re going to be the only show where zombies and humans are aware of each other and existing together in society. Each zombie is contagious and could cause the apocalypse; now, how do you live together. That seems like such a great story to tell.”

For many viewers, this season, with the conspiracy theorists who spewed hatred online and pitted humans against zombies, resonated with the current political climate. Thomas said that next season “will have a lot of political overtones.”

“This one does really make you think about the refugee crisis,” he says. “We talked about refugees quite a bit. No one wants zombies. If you think people don’t want Syrians, no one wants zombies.”

Thomas noted that a reverse crisis will occur, as terminally ill humans seek to get into Seattle. “They want to get in to be turned into the zombies, and there aren’t enough brains to feed them all,” he explains. “Chase Graves will have the responsibility of, ‘Do we let in more humans who want to be turned into zombies who we can’t feed?’”

And while there will still be a murder of the week, how cases get solved will change.

“Things are going to change up at the police station a bit. Like, every detective is going to have a zombie they work with,” Thomas says. “The Seattle police force will only handle cases in which the victim is a human. Fillmore Graves will have their own force that will handle cases where the victim is a zombie. Things within the system will change a bit.”

But don’t worry, iZombie fans, your beloved show isn’t undergoing a complete transformation. As Thomas says, “Everything will have a slightly different flavor but the structure will feel very similar.”
