IZombie llegará pronto a nuestras pantallas.

With the first trailer out and a premiere date finally set, everybody's talking about The CW's iZombie...and there are few actors on the show you're likely to hear more about than its big bad, David Anders.

Anders, a veteran of Alias and Once Upon a Time, plays Blaine DeBeers, a sentient zombie like our hero Liv but without any of her scruples or aversion to eating the living.

Anders joined ComicBook.com way back during Comic Con International: San Diego to talk about the series, which debuts March 17 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

You are the antagonist here, which is not unfamiliar territory for you. Why do you think it is that everyone thinks you have such a punchable face?

I don't...I can't say. I'm going to blame J.J. Abrams on this one, I'm going to take the high road. He's the one who cast me on Alias so it's all J.J.'s fault. It's all Mr. Sark's fault from Alias. At least I'm playing Americans now!

Well, you trade off the accent for the makeup this time around, though.

It's true. I do have some makeup in this one, yeah. You've got to go through the Mikado works, get all whitened up, become pale-face.

How much time does it take?

It's about an hour. Rose is light-skinned, whereas I'm stained red from golfing.

Have you read the comics?

Yes, I have. They're good. It's a great story, it's great art. We take the template of it and the title and then make our own out of it.

Tonally, what do you do to keep it on pace with that?

For the fans of the comic, I think it's important to maintain that tone and I think we do from what I know of what the writers have planned for us. It's important so as not to alienate those fans, but it's also important to make it our own to get our own fans.

As a bad guy, is it fun to just have a character who can do whatever you want without consequence? I mean, you're already dead!

Oh, yeah. Blaine is going to wreak havoc and Rob says he wants me to chew scenery, so it's going to be a very broad performance from David Anders.

When Liv Moore comes to the small screen this spring, a key part of her crime-stopping team on The CW's iZombie will be Clive Babineaux, a police officer who's struggling in his job until he meets this remarkable young girl he's told is psychic.

In fact, Liv eats the brains of the recently deceased in order to get mental impressions of them and help solve their murders...but that's not something Clive knows or, according to actor Malcolm Goodwin, would be likely to accept if he was told.

Goodwin joined ComicBook.com during Comic Con International: San Diego this summer to talk about the series based on Chris Roberson and Mike Allred's Vertigo comics, which is presenting today at the Television Critics' Association.

Now, you've said before that your character had a very odd mix of influences. Can you recap that?

On the breakdown, when it came out for Clive Babineaux, they said he's a cross between Shaft, Cleavon Little from Blazing Saddles and Jordan Peele. For me, I was like, "I get it." For me, that was just crystal clear. So I just did my version of how that blend of characters would live for me, and I went to the audition and it worked out.

Are you going broad with the performance, then, or a bit more understated?

He's a bit more understated. That was the tricky part: finding out how big to play him, how small to play him and finding that balance. I just try to keep honest, you know? I'm also working with a great ensemble of actors, so there wasn't a need to push. Just be real and the comedy is already there without me having to play it. All I need to do is just commit to the situation and circumstances and the result should be funny as a testament to Rob [Thomas] and Diane [Ruggiero]'s writing.

Clive believes that Liv is a psychic. Is it fair to draw parallels to shows like Psych and The Mentalist?

Obviously the audience is on the fact that she's not really psychic, that she eats brains and she gets visions but I don't know that.

So I think that's a nice relationship, being that the audience is in on something that my character isn't in on, especially with the whole procedural side of things. Also, how I deal with it. Me being in the dark about that leads to some really funny conversations, some funny back-and-forth between Liv and me.

Have you given any thought to how your character would react when and if it all falls apart and he finds out the truth?

Yeah, that's going to be interesting. Obviously he has to believe it, and maybe a series of weird things happens over and over again?...But Clive would never think the zombie thing! That would probably be the last thing he would think. He'll buy the psychic thing because he got a story about that but whether or not he'll really 100% buy into the zombie thing, it would be a tough sell. He'll have to see it. Even if he sees it, he'd be like "Oh, that's a good makeup job. Somebody's playing a trick on me?"

But it would be interesting if that were to happen, how he would react to it.

What are you guys doing tonally to pick up what's important from the comics?

I think tonally it's just that the iZombie comics are tonally funny. There's a lot of sarcasm and humor within Gwen and her situation and I know for me, what I found to channel was Diogenes, the lead head hunter of the vampires. For me in terms of going ot the source and not even knowing how far away it was from the comics, for me it was like, "Should I go to the audition with some shades on? Should I have a bad eye?" Really, all those thoughts ran through my mind and choices.

But I think tonally, fans of the comic book will not be disappointed with the TV show. All they really did was just took the Gwen character and placed her in a different environment, but it's still the same tone, same sarcasm and kind of a similar struggle with her humanity. It's very close to the comic books in that regard.

With the announcement today that the series will premiere in March, iZombie takes one more lurching step toward viewers' living rooms.

The series, based on the cult-hit Vertigo comic from Chris Roberson and Mike Allred, features Rose McIver as Olivia "Liv" Moore, a med student who wakes up after a particularly unpleasant party to discover that she is, in fact, a zombie. Eating human brains from the morgue to keep her baser urges at bay, Liv finds that she gets psychic impressions of the lives and deaths of the bodies, and that she can play a role in helping murder victims find justice.

The procedural tone makes perfect sense for Veronica Mars producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggierio-Wright, who are heading up the project for The CW, but it's not entirely like the comics, in which Liv was called Gwen, she was a gravedigger rather than a med student and her supporting cast included a battery of oddball supernatural characters including vampires and a were-terrier.

So...where are the similarities?

"With the comic, there was this vibrancy," actor Rahul Kohli told us at Comic Con International in San Diego this summer. "I mean, it did have its dark moments and it dealt with that. There's vampires and zombies and were-terriers. But at the same time, it still had that quirkiness to it and I think our show definitely embodies that."

Kohli plays Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti on iZombie, a character created for the TV series and arguably the show's primary source of comic relief. He works with Liv at the morgue and is the first to discover that she's undead. Which, by the way, he loves.

"Previously for most of the work I did back at home, it's very introvert and minimalist and gritty," Kohil said. "When I was given this, I think one of the notes is that he kind of had this Scotty behavior on the Enterprise. He's highly-caffienated and he has no off switch and no filter. So I was looking at these monologues that I have and he's rattling them off as fast as possible and he's a very, very colorful character. He was a joy to play, honestly, and it's fun to play somebody who can say anything and get away with it."

The show might seem an odd choice to play on Tuesday nights following the light, frothy superhero fun of The Flash, but Kohli assured fans that they won't be driven to despair in the next hour.

"If you describe the show as a zombie who just eats brains to keep her humanity, it sounds very dark," Kohli said. "But through Rob [Thomas] and Diane [Ruggiero] and the rest of the writers, they're able to still give that vibrancy and that colorful look and to eliminate some of the darker elements of it."

As "iZombie's" Olivia "Liv" Moore, Rose McIver has a bad case of the munchies, but it's not something a bag of chips can satisfy. Once a college student with a promising future, Liv joined the ranks of the living dead in the wake of a zombie attack. Since then, the young coroner employee must indulge her cravings for human brains once a month in order to maintain a normal appearance as well as her humanity. However, every time she chows down, Liv inherits the deceased's memories and feels obligated to solve their murders. To further complicate matters, evil zombie Blaine (David Anders) is causing trouble, and to make things even worse, may in fact be responsible for Liv's transformation.

Based on the Vertigo series of the same name created by Chris Roberson and Mike Allred, and executive produced by Veronica Mars' Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, "iZombie" is described by the network as a supernatural procedural with some heart... and bite. As part of the show's big coming out ceremony at Comic-Con International, McIver spent some time with the press to answer a few questions about her undead starring role. In addition to explaining how she landed the part, McIver discussed what ability comes with her character's diet, facing off against her nemesis and what happens when Liv gets a little peckish.

How did you get involved in "iZombie?"

Rose McIver: It was pilot season and I was looking at various pilots. My manager sent me this thing, "iZombie." I assumed from the title it would be along the lines of "Walking Dead," which I think is a great show. It was a big surprise when I got home, read it, and it's this bizarre zombie/comedy procedural. It jams in as many genres as we can, and they have a lot of fun with it. They subvert the idea of zombie genre quite a lot. I went in and tested. I Skyped with Rob [Thomas], who was at his Mom's 70th birthday, in Austin. We just hit it off, and it all fell into place.

Your character goes through a pretty traumatic ordeal in the first episode. She loses everything she's got and has to reinvent herself. That could make a very bitter character to play, but obviously Rob knows how to bring out the comedy, even in the darker situations.

Absolutely. I've always been drawn to comedy with a strong sense of tragedy and vice versa. That's smart writing, and Rob and Diane [Ruggiero] do a great job of it.

What was appealing about Liv is, she is cynical and jaded, and she's lost her sense of identity, but within the first episode, although she can maintain some of that sarcasm and dark sense of humor, she starts to see a sense of purpose as well. Thanks to Robbie, her colleague and boss, she's able to find a bit more of a purpose in her life. With that growing sense of identity comes a little bit more of a sense of optimism.

Liv is a zombie and still has to function in the real world. How do you stay human?

We're playing that she's able to pass off as a human. Her family and friends still believe that she's a human, but she's unhealthy looking. The other day, I actually saw somebody walking around the streets who had a similar complexion. I did a double take. Although I may have just thought she was unhealthy before, now I am getting suspicious.

Liv loses all her pigment. I have white hair. I have very, very white skin. I have dark circles under my eyes. The more hungry I am, the longer it's been since I've eaten a brain, I get red contact lenses and veins. We work with an amazing makeup and hair department that have created a really strong look for when I go rabid zombie mode.

Can you talk about the differences between Liv and her evil zombie counterpart, Blaine [David Anders].

I only recently watched "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and I feel like my character is a cross between Buffy and Angel. She's this ethical zombie. She's the heroine, solving these crimes and fighting against injustice in her community. She's also a zombie who is trying to eat brains in the most socially responsible way. She eats brains of the people who have died in order to preserve something.

It serves us to have a bad zombie whose intentions aren't so ethical or socially responsible. We have cast the divine David Anders as Blaine. He is the peak of the bad zombie world. We get to see her and his interaction. That's a big part of the storyline for the first season.

How grueling was it getting the proper zombie mannerisms down? Did you have a particular walk or sound you had to practice?

Yes, it was incredibly challenging in thinking about it in the weeks leading up to shooting. Luckily, the first time I actually had to play a zombie was in the middle of the night. We were shooting in the cold, in Canada, and in the woods. I had been clinging to the roof of the car. My brain was mush, I wasn't thinking at all. It was a relief. Stuff just happened. I had no inhibitions. I played around and managed to find something that worked.

Rose McIver's Liv isn't your typical college student. She works in a morgue, she helps solve murder cases and, even stranger, Liv is a zombie who reluctantly consumes brains once a month in order to maintain her intelligence and humanity. On top of it all, evil zombie Blaine (David Anders), is amassing an undead army to take over the city -- and only Liv can stop him. This is "iZombie," a new show debuting March 17 on The CW, based on the Vertigo comic of the same name created by Chris Roberson and Mike Allred.

During the series' big push at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Executive Producer Rob Thomas spoke with press about his upcoming adaptation. The man behind "Veronica Mars" discussed transferring the "iZombie" concept from the pages of the comic to the small screen, building a new mythology from there, containing the show's "zombie outbreak" and why McIver is perfectly cast in the role of humanity's main hope of preventing a zombie apocalypse.

Obviously, "iZombie" is a great comic book property. When you're looking at adapting something, what are the things that you want to keep and the things you need to change for television?

Rob Thomas: What we kept from the comic was the big idea, the premise, which was that this woman in her 20s is a functioning zombie. She's not brain dead; she's just kinda dead. She needed brains to survive, and when she ate brains, she inherited the memories of the brains she ate. That, we kept intact. But because we were going to do 22 [episodes] a year, we wanted there to be a real procedural at the core. By making her work in a morgue -- in the comic book she's robbing a grave -- but by putting her in a police morgue, it meant that every brain she was eating was a murder victim. Each week, we could solve a murder case.

Besides the procedural element, can you talk about the mythology that you are building and what viewers can expect on a weekly basis?

As we pick up the show, Liv believes she is maybe the only zombie. She got turned into a zombie at a boat party, where it was utter desolation. Very few people got off alive. You could argue she didn't even get off alive. It was a way for us to contain the zombie outbreak. Over the course of the pilot, she discovers there is one more [zombie]. That's the ending reveal of the pilot.

The long arc, the mythology, will involve her trying to stave off a zombie apocalypse. She will be the lynch-pin in that. When we start the show, we sort of have one good zombie and one bad zombie. It's much easier to be a bad zombie. You can create other zombies at will. The long arc will be trying to survive and stave off a zombie apocalypse.

Can you talk about casting Rose McIver as your lead?

The interesting thing for me was -- when we cast "Veronica Mars," Kristen Bell was literally the first of a hundred actresses that I saw for that. I spent the whole time knowing, "I got it. That first girl I saw. I want her." This time, Rose was the 100th of a hundred actresses I saw. Literally, we were down to the last day and I was a little panicked because I did not think we had it. It's looking at her thinking, "She has star quality. She's magnetic, and people are going to want to watch her. She has charm." In the pilot episode, we had a lot of that hidden because the arc of the pilot is, she begins feeling she has no reason to get up each day. She hasn't been solving crimes. She's merely surviving. She had this great life. She's marrying a great guy. She was going to be a doctor. She was going to save lives and be someone important. When she gets turned into a zombie, all that is taken away from her. She doesn't want to give her fiancé "zombie," so she ends that relationship. She needs brains, so she takes a job at the morgue, which she doesn't really want.

The pilot story is one in which she starts with no reason to go on, barely able to get out of bed, and she ends it discovering she might be able to do some good in the world. We spent two-thirds of the pilot with a very dour character, and I needed someone who had charm that shined through that.

People are expecting more of a horror element with a zombie property. Where is it landing for you right now?

On the CW, we could never out-"Walking Dead" the "Walking Dead." Being on that network, we could never do the sort of shotgun to the brain stuff that they do, which I enjoy. We're relying on wit. We want the drama to have stakes, but we want it to have levity. There were a lot of comparisons between "Veronica Mars" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I actually think "iZombie" is closer to what "Buffy" was doing. We've referenced "Buffy" and "Warm Bodies" a lot as to where we're going to land.

Is it a lot about metaphor for you?

No. Thematically, we've been very interested in Liv having the worst ever quarter-life crisis. All these 25-year-olds who have gotten out of school and there's nothing waiting for them? She's gotten that, with a baseball bat. Everything she thought she had worked for is stripped away from her. She's having to start over at 25.
