- Diane Ruggiero-Wright habla sobre la Season 2 (ksitetv):
Diane Ruggiero-Wright habla sobre la Season 2
Por Craig Byrne, 05 Oct 2015

Season 2 of the CW “zomedy” iZombie begins this Tuesday night, October 6, following the season premiere of The Flash. The series stars Rose McIver and was brought to afterlife by Executive Producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright.

This summer, we spoke with Ms. Ruggiero-Wright about Season 2 as well as aspects of the first season. We also tried to get some hints as to what to look forward to. Enjoy, and don’t miss the season premiere on Tuesday night!

KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: When we last saw Liv, she had a big decision to make involving her brother. Can you talk about that?

DIANE RUGGIERO-WRIGHT: I can tell you some things: I can tell you that there’s going to be some very dramatic fallout from that… in the first season, the big thing was “I have to keep this secret, and I have to keep this secret because I’ve afraid of people getting hurt, and I’m afraid of how people will react to me,” and that was kind of her thing for the first season.

Now, for the second season, it’s like “Oh sh-t! Everything that I feared that was going to happen, is going to happen. The people I love got really hurt, and the people that I love left me.” And so, it all kind of falls down around her in the beginning of this season. It’s three months later, and she’s still dealing with this heartbreaking aftermath.

Will there be a continuation of the Max Rager storyline in Season Two?

Yes. There’s more Max Rager in Season Two, which I’m super excited about, because I love Steven Weber. I was actually pitching that we build part of his office out of chocolate so he could just reach over and literally eat pieces of scenery… he’s so fraiking good. He destroys me. So we’re going to have more of him, which I’m delighted about, and Max Rager will definitely be playing a role as another “Big Bad” in this season.

Were there any other guest stars that really jumped out to you in Season One?

It’s so funny that you should ask….

We always knew we were going to kill Lowell. We knew it. We hoped that we would find an actor that was compelling, because who could compete with Robert Buckley? So, it was like “oh, she could be with Major, but then there’s this other guy…” You look at any other guy and you’re like “Yeah, right.” Everything seems like a step down [from Major], but Bradley [James] was just so compelling, and he had such great chemistry, and those characters just blended so well together… I was hoping that the story would play well… I was hoping that people would be invested, but I had no idea how invested people would be, and I had no idea how invested I would be, and that I would actually backpedal to Rob and be like “Do we have to kill him?” But I knew that we had to kill him and that was the right thing to do, but I became super invested in him, and I am so sad that we can’t have him back.

There are certain people that are coming back from the first season, actors that we discovered that we really liked and have found a way to bring back, so that’s kind of fun for us to see that.

Are we going to see Peyton again?

Yes! She’s going to come back… I wish we could have more of her. I love her, and I’d love to see more of that relationship between the best friends, but we could only have her for a limited time… but this year, she does have a crossover of stories that is going to be pretty interesting. We’re going to get to see Peyton in a different capacity, and I think it’s going to be really fun.

Do you think we will see more females for Liv to work with in the future?

There’s another female cast member that has come on.

Last season you had some Veronica Mars guest stars like Ryan Hansen and Percy Daggs. Will we be seeing any more of that in Season 2?

Well, we had Adam Rose, he played Mac’s boyfriend, he’s in an episode…. and we will definitely have more Party Down people. Rob always has his friends who love being on the shows.

I loved having Percy on the show because I loved him so much — Wallace has such a special place in my heart. My favorite part about the Ryan Hansen thing, were those promotional posters that were on the wall… seeing the ones that we got to use, and the ones that we couldn’t use… that was the best fun, just seeing him in all of those different poses. He’s just so hilarious… him and Rose are very good friends, so she was happy to have him there.

Can you talk about Robert Knepper coming on to the show?

I am so excited. I love him, and he’s amazing, and he’s perfect for Blaine’s father. To go toe-to-toe with David Anders is no joke, so I’m really excited for that casting.

How is Blaine going to deal with his change in status?

I feel like he’s adaptable… His evil kind of crime aspirations, I feel like he might’ve been struggling when he was just a low-grade drug dealer, but turning into a zombie kind of his niche, and it gave him confidence to show that he was good at what he does, in a way, and so it’s with a new-found confidence that he embarks on his next endeavor which is just as bad. He’s not going to miss a beat.

How is Major going to adapt after all of the revelations from the season finale?

There’s definitely a journey that they’re going to have to go on. It’s three months later when we pick up. You’re not going to be over it in three months, let’s face it. I get his perspective, and I get why he’s going to struggle with what to do that. It’s also so bizarre… like, how do you even process that? It’s a lot to process, so I get it.

At Comic-Con, you had mentioned in an interview somewhere that you would love to write Wonder Woman at some point…

Which was so funny, because I had done this guest writing thing for the Hollywood Reporter, saying how I was never getting genre jobs, and then I finally got one… so they had just asked me about it, like “now that you can work in genre, what would be your dream?” and I said it, and then all of the sudden I was getting all of these Tweets!

I’m actually writing a comic for them [DC Comics], for the digital Wonder Woman series, Sensation Comics. I’m excited. That’s probably in the next few months. That was like the biggest dream come true. The fun part of it, for me, is that I’m kind of into the Golden Age… I’m kind of a retro girl… I always wanted to do Wonder Woman Noir, so I pitched like a Wonder Woman Noir story.

As far as writing a super heroine, you get to do that with iZombie… was that also a life-long goal?

It’s the greatest thing, because it’s all I want to be. Growing up and being a big comics fan and being a superhero fan, or even when I was a Charlie’s Angels fan… that was always the dream, to write this hero. I always wanted that. As a kid going to see the Superman movies, and just thinking “I wish I could do that, I wish I could save people”…. so, getting to write someone that helps people and kicks ass is the greatest thing in the world. It was fun writing Veronica Mars, because she helped people, and she was bad-ass… and this is just like another level from that, to have more kind of action and that kind of stuff. It’s the greatest.

What about Season 2 excites you the most for people to see?

Max Rager.

Showrunners de "iZombie" sobre una Liv "Desatada" y la estructura de la Season 2
Por Sydney Bucksbaum 05 Octubre, 2015 10:45am PT

iZombie's showrunners are going all-in with season two.

As of now, The CW's DC Comics drama about a zombie (Rose McIver) working in a morgue only has a 13-episode order for its sophomore outing, the same episode count as its freshman run when it debuted midseason. But executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright are structuring season two — now premiering in the fall — as if they already got a back-nine order.

"I am betting on success!" Thomas tells The Hollywood Reporter. "If we only get 13 episodes, we are going to be in big trouble. I'm structuring this season like we're doing 22. If we don't get a back-nine order and end up only doing 13, it will just feel like the water cut off midstream. So we're putting a little extra spice on that 13th episode and hoping for the best. If not ... well, let's just say the fans would not be happy where we leave off."

Ruggiero-Wright said it was never an option to plan for a straight 13 for season two.

"Episode nine is our episode before we go on our six-week break for Christmas," she tells THR. "That's our midseason finale and it's a pretty big episode, and then 13 will also be a big episode. But we're breaking for 22 episodes since we're cocky bastards. And I saved [Warner Bros. boss] Peter Roth and [The CW boss] Mark Pedowitz's lives more than once, so I feel pretty confident."

So what can fans expect to see from season two? Check out what else Thomas and Ruggiero-Wright had to say about the zombie procedural below.

At the end of season one, Max Rager boss Vaughn (Steven Weber) was about to debut Super Max. If Max Rager made zombies, is it right to assume something even worse will come from Super Max?

Thomas: No. Super Max will have a different quality to it, but I'm not sure if it's worse or not. Super Max will actually have a lot going for it.

Ruggiero-Wright: There is more of Max Rager to come and things get pretty hairy. Max Rager certainly factors big into season two in surprising ways.

You revealed at Comic-Con that Vaughn is going to play a bigger part in season two. How so?

Thomas: He makes it pretty clear going into season two that he plans to take care of Seattle's zombie problem. So if season one was largely about zombies taking out humans, season two will be the reverse.

Blaine (David Anders) and Major have been injected with Ravi's (Rahul Kohli) zombie cure. Are we going to see them bond over being the only two cured zombies that we know of?

Thomas: Not at all. [Laughs.]

Ruggiero-Wright: You will not see Major and Blaine bond. I don't think Major will ever get over what Blaine's done, both to the homeless teens and to him.

How are they each going to be handling their transitions?

Thomas: Major was only a zombie for a couple hours so his issue is less about the fact that he was a zombie for a little bit and more that he's feeling pretty betrayed by Liv since she broke up with him without telling him why, she let him check himself into a mental institution, and so he's having a pretty hard time letting go of that. Blaine is very much enjoying being a human, though it is important for his customers to not know that he's human. In season one, we saw zombies trying to pass as human, and season two there's a lot of Blaine as a human trying to pass as a zombie.

Ruggiero-Wright: It is more difficult for Major than it is for Blaine. Blaine's an enterprising guy and he's got a mind for crime, so I don't think you can keep him down long. But it's going to be a struggle for Major, not only finding out the whole zombie-ness of it all but also that he was lied to by the person he was supposed to marry. She lied to him so much he thought he was crazy and had himself committed. That's a lot for him to process.

Thomas: And both Blaine and Major are going to experience some strange side effects from the cure. It was not a perfect solution. Ravi is going to be very involved in everything cure-related. That continues to be a high priority of his. Liv used up the last bit of tainted utopium at the end of season one, so part of season two is Ravi's quest to get his hands on some more of that.

Prison Break alum Robert Knepper has been cast as Blaine’s father. What is their dynamic like?

Thomas: It probably won't surprise anyone to know – I think we even teased in the season one finale that Blaine says he's got "daddy issues" – he certainly does have some pretty, pretty intense daddy issues.

Ruggiero-Wright: The relationship is what you hope it would be. They're not going to be throwing a ball around the yard together. You can expect to gain some insight into what makes Blaine, Blaine and what his motivations are for doing the things he's done, or at least what inspired him.

Will we see more of Peyton (Aly Michalka) this season now that she's clued in to Liv's secret?

Thomas: Most of what Peyton did in season one was bounce off the other characters. In season two, she is a bit more ingrained in the mythology. She has stories that are centered on her job and digging into Seattle's criminal hierarchy. We have some fun stuff for her planned. She's probably in about half the episodes again in season two, so about the same as last year, but she has meatier stories this time.

Liv couldn’t save her brother with her blood. Her family is going to be upset with her about that — will that be a season-long arc?

Thomas: You will get some answers to the cliffhanger in the first scene of the premiere. So you will see it immediately when we pick up, but it won't be resolved right away. It will have season-long repercussions. It will be an ongoing issue in Liv's life.

Ruggiero-Wright: There's a lot of tragedy there. That will play out over the season. We're not going to jerk you around for a whole season though. There will be answers that will be given but there's a season-long story for her and her family.

Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) was still suspicious of Major after the Meat Cute massacre. How close is he going to get to discovering what’s really going on?

Ruggiero-Wright: He's a dog with a bone. He's not going to stop and he will make progress with his case.

Thomas: I don't want to say how close he's going to get because that's going to play out in some surprising ways, but I will say that he is persistent. As we start season two, he has been taken off the case because he was taking it in a direction that his superiors didn't like, and he definitely believes that Major is tied up in it in some way and he won't let it go. That will occasionally be a problem in his relationship with Liv, since she's Major's alibi for that night. That's Clive's great white whale of season two.

Are there any more Veronica Mars or Party Down alums going to show up on iZombie?

Thomas: Yes! We start off with Adam Rose who played Mac's (Tina Majorino) boyfriend Max on Veronica Mars. And there are plans for more to show up. I emailed Jason Dohring earlier this year saying that I was going to find a cool storyline for him. That was certainly my intention until he booked his gig on The Originals so that went by the wayside.

Are you going to hold that role for him for some point in the future or did you have to cast someone else in that role?

Thomas: We had to cast someone else in that role, but it would have been great to have him on the show. And we're going to get some more people in. It's just a bit tough since the show shoots in Canada and it's hard for some actors to get away and shoot for 10 days up in Canada. But there are many people from Veronica Mars and Party Down that I hope to get on the show.

If you had 22 episodes for the first season, would the show have looked any different?

Thomas: It's interesting doing a midseason show because you have no idea how the audience is going to react to anything until it airs, and we shot all our episodes way before anyone saw any of them. With a fall show, you can adjust to how the audience reacts to things. For example, I had no idea how much the audience would love Lowell. [Laughs.] We had always planned on a five-episode arc for him and we knew what we were going to do with that arc and how it was going to end, so who knows? If we had been on the air at the same time as we were breaking it and seen how the audience was responding to Lowell [Bradley James], he may have had a much longer arc. There was just no way of knowing.

What are you most excited for fans to see from season two?

Thomas: I feel like it's the year of Rose McIver unleashed. [Laughs] Her performances have been great, and she's getting to really push the character further than ever before because we're playing her a bit more brain-motivated. The personalities of the brains she eats are shining through more clearly this season and it's really fun.

Ruggiero-Wright: And we learned that we need to be as specific as possible with the brains. The more easily identifiable of a personality, the better. The more clear, the better. So you'll see that reflected this season.

Showrunner de "iZombie" sobre el grupo de cerebros de Liv, el próximo movimiento de Blaine, la reacción de Major y más en la Season 2
Por Eric Goldman 05 Octubre, 2015

iZombie returns Tuesday night for Season 2 with a ton in motion. The show ended its first season on a notably strong note, with a terrific season finale that found Blaine (David Anders) transformed back into a human, while Liv (Rose McIver) chose to save a dying Major (Robert Buckley) by biting him… only to use her final batch of the zombie cure on him, after he made it clear he wanted no part of her undead life.

With Season 2 here, I sat down with the show’s executive producer and co-showrunner, Diane Ruggiero-Wright, to discuss what’s next for Liv and her friends, family (and estranged friends and family) in Season 2. Not to mention the source of brains Liv will be consuming in upcoming episodes, temporarily transforming her own temperament and attitude, and letting McIver show off a bevy of skills in the process.

IGN: You guys had a huge finale that really shook things up. Going into this season, how much is Liv’s world still rocking from everything that happened?

Diane Ruggiero-Wright: It’s pretty rocking. The first season is about her keeping this secret from everyone to preserve some semblance of her life and the fears that she had of what would happen if people knew. The second season is those worst fears being realized. It’s “I’m so afraid that if I told them, they’d reject me.” And what happened? They left her. Peyton left, Major freaked out and so a lot of the beginning of the season is her dealing with the fall out and trying to get her life back on track with her family and those closest to her. We pick up three months later and we see how it’s affected her on that journey and getting her back together.

IGN: Major went through such a transformation, in multiple ways. Three months later, where is he at?

Ruggiero-Wright: He’s not over it when we come back. It’s funny because I vacillate between being really annoyed with Major, because it’s not her fault, and have some understanding and then completely seeing it from his perspective and thinking Jesus, his life was – the whole time she kept it from him and him thinking, “Oh my god, this person that I was madly in love with and was supposed to be my wife, just out of nowhere blew me off and was off the map and then kids start dying and I think I’m going crazy and the whole time my life was in danger and she knew.” I get why it’s going to take him a long time to forgive her. But then you see it from her perspective and you understand why she made those decisions and that’s not something that can be resolved with a phone call or a coffee date. There’s definitely going to be some fall out or reactions from that because I’d be kind of a dick if someone did that to me. But there are going to be some ups and downs with it but I’m hopeful that there is a future for them because I like them so much together.

IGN: I think it’s interesting because in a lot of shows, the cliffhanger would be her turning him. How much did you guys discuss whether that should be the end vs. having more occur, as you did?

Ruggiero-Wright: One of my favorite things about working with Rob is that he’s not a fan of schmuck bait. He doesn’t like the bulls**t of stringing people along for five years. He likes to present a problem and we have to find out how to answer it and to give them something compelling at the end and start over again next year. There are still unanswered questions like her brother and some other things. You like to give them some shocks and answers and that’s something we really pride ourselves in. So there was discussion about it, but not as much as you would think.

IGN: Last season had this pretty set unit with her and Ravi and Clive, although obviously Clive didn’t have all the knowledge Ravi did. Now, because other people have all this knowledge and Blaine is an X factor out there, how much might that shift that core unit and who she’s working with on a regular basis?

Ruggiero-Wright: Well, one of the things that’s messing things up for her right now is that Clive isn’t letting go. He didn’t buy the Meat Cute thing. He doesn’t think it was Suzuki. He more and more suspects Major. So that’s going to be a hard thing in that there’s going to be some pressure coming toward Major from this person that she works with on a daily basis. The thing is, no matter how much information you have, it’s a leap to go to “zombie!” You might go to cannibal but zombie is a leap. It’s going to make things tense but one of the things we enjoy in the show is Clive’s reactions to her - like when she’s on these various brains, he’s like “what is with you?” with this multiple personalities, psychic thing. We want to maintain that as much as we can before we eventually have to tell him. You can’t just have him not know forever but we want to keep it as long as it’s reasonable. Because after that, the show becomes very different. How do you go to just solving the crime of the week when there’s the potential for a zombie apocalypse? That’s sort of an all hands on deck situation. That’s something we have to be careful about and that we talk about all the time.

IGN: What about Ravi this season? Clearly the cure aspect is an ongoing concern, but at the same time does he have some new storylines?

Ruggiero-Wright: He’s still working on the cure which is a big thing for him. He’ll have relationships, but thus far there’s not a big change in him or a big change that’s going to happen. He’s such a fun character and such a great actor and having him there to make every scene better and brighter… I guess he gets a little short shift with having his own stories but there are a couple stories that he’ll have that he’ll play a bigger role in and we’ll get to see more of him but there’s not a big, giant Ravi, shocking twist.

IGN: How is Blaine adjusting or not adjusting to what happened to him?

Ruggiero-Wright: I so wanted to come back to Season 2 and just have him be fat. I wanted him to be like me after hiatus, when I’m just Jabba the Hutt. I so wanted him to be like Lee on Battlestar Galactica, like with powdered sugar on his face. But obviously we couldn’t do that. But yeah, I think that strangely, he was a criminal who never lived up to his criminal potential and being turned into a zombie provided him with the opportunity for an evil overlord type situation and that was the boost of confidence he needed to take things to the next level. So he’s not going to skip a beat and he’s going to find some new, interesting ways of being a big bad. This season we’ll see that he has a grander scheme. We’ll meet his father and learn a little bit more about what made Blaine Blaine, which is something we’re all interested in. I just love David Anders.

IGN: Can you talk a little bit about Blrain’s dad and casting Robert Knepper, who is obviously an awesome choice to play that character?

Ruggiero-Wright: I love Knepper. I love him. I was so excited that we got him. We almost didn’t and then Danielle Stokdyk, who is one of our executive producers, ended up knowing him. It was just so fortuitous. It was such a get to get him. I can’t really tell you too much about him, I’m sorry to say except that you’ll understand more about Blaine when you see that relationship. You kind of suspect that his dad was a dick. You’re not expecting Blaine’s dad to be Andy Griffith.

IGN: That’d be funny too.

Ruggiero-Wright: That’d be interesting too. He’s like the nicest guy like “Son, I just don’t get it. I taught you how to play ball. We hugged all the time.”

IGN: Peyton was the first person to learn the secret who was really from Liv’s past and she took off when she found out. What’s next for her?

Ruggiero-Wright: We’re going to see her again and process that fallout and see what happens to that friendship. We’ll do that pretty early on in the season. That’s one of the things that really bums me out is I wish we had Aly [Michalka] all the time so we could really facilitate those stories the way that I’d like to but we just don’t, which is a shame because she’s phenomenal and they’re great together and you want to see more of them. But we get her as much as we can. She has an interesting storyline this year, as much as we can use her. There’s a lot of cool things. Even though we don’t have her that much, there’s cool things coming down the pipe for her.

IGN: Clearly, a very fun part of the show is Liv gaining these abilities. Anything you can say about what you’re throwing both at Liv in Season 3 and thus at Rose?

Ruggiero-Wright: I feel like we’re building the perfect woman. Every episode she has to learn something else. I’m like “By the end of the first season, you’re going to be the master of all.” I’ll call her sometimes and say “Can you do this?” Or I’ll tell her she has to practice something. My episode, she’s a frat bro and she had to learn beer pong and flip cup. Kate Upton did Flip Cup against Jimmy Fallon and she just kicked his ass and had never done it before. I sent it to Rose and was like “Game on, Rosie. She did it. You have no choice.” So she had to learn how to do that and she’s playing guitar and singing in another episode. It’s really fun. In the first season, we got to see what she responded to and what she had the most fun with and what played the best and what served our stories the best. We saw that when a brain was more specific and more easily recognizable, it was more fun. The gamer brain was super fun and the cheerleader brain and the stoner brain were super fun, and the sex therapist was fun. So this season we tried to be very specific thus far so she has old man brain, like Archie Bunker brain kind of, and then Frat Boy brain and a Real Housewife of Orange County type brain. It’s interesting to do that and it makes it fun for her and it’s cool for the audience. I used to love, back in the day, Quantum Leap. In the writer’s room I said something about Flo from Alice and the young kids in the room looked at me and they were like “What’s Alice?” And I was like “you know, like Flo” and they’re like “from the Progressive Commercials?” I was like “everybody needs to get the f**k out of this room.”

IGN: The first season, her family members kind of filtered in and out of the show but like you mentioned earlier, a lot happened at the end of the season because she made this big decision to not help her brother. Can you talk about the fallout with that?

Ruggiero-Wright: I guess all I can say is there is fallout from that and it’s kind of a big deal. Like I said, the first season was about “I don’t want people to know and my fear of what will happen if they find out” and her wanting to protect them from it, her fear that they will be hurt as a result of it, or her fear that they won’t accept her. The second season is her fears being realized. People are hurt and are lost and people reject her in ways you don’t expect people to reject you. There’s definitely a fall out from that. That’s a big part of the beginning of the season and her journey for the season.

IGN: I’m sure you’ve heard from many about this, but the sequence in the Season 1 finale with Major going Taxi Driver was so great - the song choice was perfect.

Ruggiero-Wright: That’s very Rob to pick a piece of music like that. It was originally supposed to be “When Doves Cry,” but it was too expensive.

IGN: What I love about that sequence is this is a show that has a lot of tonal shifts it pulls off well. Is it a fun challenge for you guys to make those shifts and have a show that there’s a very comedic bend to it and a quirkiness to it, but that when you want it to be a badass scene, it can be?

Ruggiero-Wright: That’s the best. That’s the most fun of doing the show and I think that’s one of the reasons why Rob and I work so well together. We’re both of that mindset. We want the kick ass dramatic moments, but we want it to be funny and ironic and a little tongue in cheek at times. When you have [Robert] Buckley, some people would just “He’s the pretty boy and the love interest,” but he’s got more to him than that. He’s got teeth and you get to see him have this journey and go so dark and have him go so far. And also good on Buckley. He got his ass kicked a lot! He knew he was going to get his moments but he didn’t look so good for a lot of those episodes. But him taking it and doing it and then knowing at the end he was going to have his moment where he’s like “f**k this,” it all felt very earned and I’m very proud of it.

6 Aperi-avances que necesitas devorar antes de sintonizar la S2 de "iZombie"

Got brains?

Well, if you tune into tonight's season two premiere of The CW's deliciously addictive drama, iZombie, you'll definitely find plenty!

To help curb your cravings before the jam-packed debut, we're providing you with six appe-teasers you need to know before tuning in. Dig in…

1. A Buffet of Brains: Liv will be trying on many sensational cerebellum-fueled personalities this season. After the grumpy old man brains that she reluctantly devours in tonight's season two premiere, our fair-haired zombie will embrace her beerpong skills with frat boy brains in episode two. After that? "Our next three are real housewife brain, country western chanteuse brain, and then basketball coach brain," executive producer Rob Thomas dished. And later down the line get ready for "stalker brains." Yay!

2. Zombie Wannabe: Now that Ravi's cure is currently pulsing through Blaine's formerly undead veins, the blonde baddie is not quite ready to embrace the life of the living. "Blaine is a human in zombie's clothes," star David Anders spilled to ETonline. "His zombie hair is now found in a bottle of peroxide and so he's pretending and fibbing to maintain appearances for his business." As for Blaine's new business? Let's just say it puts the "fun" in funeral.

3. Super-Sized Season 2: Since iZombie debuted as a mid-season show on The CW earlier this year, fans were only treated to 13-episode first season. However, now it's looking like season two will go into "full on zombie mode" and will likely expand. "I think we're going to get to do 22 -- I'm feeling bullish," Thomas said of the sophomore season, which is currently slated for 18 episodes.

4. Quest for the Cure: Although it seems like Ravi's rat-tested zombie cure is working perfectly, Anders warns that nothing is perfect in the world of iZombie. "There are side effects that you're going to see in the first few episodes," the actor teased. "And those are just the tip of the iceberg because this isn't a fool-proof cure by any stretch."

5. Major Problem: If you thought that Major had a dangerously dark journey in season one, then you are in for a whirlwind of shock in season two. Even though Liv's former fiancé is seemingly a human again, that doesn’t mean that he is free from all the zombie drama. On the contrary, Major will be forced to complete an unspeakable act by the end of the premiere and the repercussions will haunt him for the entire season.

6. Unlikely Allies: While Blaine is on his quest to become the "crime lord of Seattle" he'll eventually need some help when going up against this season's big bad. Luckily for him, Liv will be his (reluctant) ally. "She hates Blaine but I don’t think Blaine really hates Liv -- he's kind of delighted by her innocence and equally frustrated by it," Anders confessed, "They are going to have to put aside their rocky past so that they may have a rocky future. They're going to team up and teammates don't have to like each other, they just have to win the ballgame."

Entrevista con Malcolm Goodwin de "iZombie"
Por starrymag | 06 Octubre, 2015

Q) Where do we pick up with “iZombie” this season?

A) We pick up nine months later. I won’t give it away, but what decision Liv (Rose McIver) made in regards to saving Evan (Nick Purcha) we learn how that transpired. Clive doesn’t believe the story that is being sold to the media about Suzuki, going down in a gun fight and shutting down this drug operation. He doesn’t believe it. He believes there is something else went down. He believes Major is involved, but he can’t prove it. He is struggling with that and his alibi is Liv. So, every now and then throughout the season they do have conversations about what really happened that night. There are breadcrumbs throughout the season that starts to lead Clive to the truth, but whether or not he’ll reach it – I don’t know. But there are some clues along the way that will leave the audience feeling like, “Oh my gosh! Is he going to figure it out?” You also get to see the effects of the cure. Blaine and Major are the first human trials of this cure. So, you get to see if there are side effects or if it is really a cure. It’s really entertaining what the writers did with those storylines.

Q) With these questions, are they just within the precinct or are they with the people who are close to him?

A) As of right now, his only leads are Major (Robert Buckley) and Blaine (David Anders). He knows there is someone named Blaine, but he doesn’t know he has already met him. He knows that the only clues he has is that Major is somehow involved because of the sneakers and Julien Dupont (Aleks Paunovic) being one of the victims in the meet-cute massacre. He feels like the bullet wound in Suzuki (Hiro Kanagawa) was self inflicted, but he can’t prove it. So, in terms of looking into it he has to do it outside of the system, outside of the people he is working with and outside of Liv. So, it’s kind of a covert operation he has to do on his own time.

Q) Who will be the new Captain that we get to meet this season and how will the dynamics in the precinct shift?

A) Someone from his past comes back and they take over that position. It’s going to be interesting to see that dynamic. Clive doesn’t have the best reputation on the force, although he is kind of rebuilding his name and is having success closing cases with the help of Liv. But someone from his past is taking that position as his Lieutenant and is making it difficult for him to pursue his lead from the meet-cute massacre. That person is the person who took him off the case and said, “I don’t want you to touch this case. Leave it alone.” Obviously, he defies that person and looks into it anyway. Clive also has a romantic interest this season and you get to learn so much about him. Every script I read I go, “Oh? Clive likes that? I didn’t know that! That’s cool. He has this talent? Okay. Maybe I should go and do some research on it.” The world they built around Clive’s personal life is pretty great and fun. It just fleshes out the character more and gives me more fun things to play with.

Q) Liv and Clive have this wonderful give and take relationship. What keeps them gelling together?

A) They are both willing to do whatever it takes in the name of justice. Liv has to stay a zombie and eat brains. She decides to use those visions in the service of these particular victims. I think it brings her some type of resolve, justification or it humanizes her more than she really is – in terms of being half dead and half alive. I think it makes her feel more alive to eat the brains because she is a zombie, but she can at least help these victims. She’s willing to do what she has to do. Clive is in the same position. Clive is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means working with someone who has pale skin, white hair and is a psychic (zombie). He thinks, “If that’s the situation, I’ll work with it.” And if it is working than he doesn’t care what anyone thinks about it. As long as it bringing these victims’ killers to justice it is working. You also learn why he has such a strong sense of that and a lot of people don’t agree with that. When he was in Vice, he was willing to beat-up his own partner in order to not blow either of their covers to solve this bad particular case they were on. I think that also makes him feel more alive. I think that makes him feel more human, too. Although it is unspoken and they never said it to each other, I think they have that common thread.

Q) The cast is known for their funny videos to promote the upcoming season. Which has been your favorite?

A) We always try to top the last one. The one we did with Rahul [Kohli] as Wonder Woman was hilarious. When we were pitching ideas for this “iZombie” badass countdown we were like, “We are going to countdown all the female badass characters from TV.” Rahul was like, “I want to be Wonder Woman! I’m going to get the costume and everything.” He showed up to set, on his day off too, and was like, “I’m ready to shoot!” We had a Kill Bill one that was pretty crazy. Our cast really gets along. One thing that makes this experience special is that we are all friends and we all really, really get along. That’s what makes doing these videos and all the things we do on social media a good time.

Q) Was there anything you have added to this role that wasn’t originally scripted for you?

A) Clive kind of became the straight man in the show, which I think was important to ground the cases. Everything is so fantastical with Liv being a zombie, being a psychic. Then, you have Blaine and all of these other stories that exist within a supernatural world and you have this procedural element that kind of anchors those particular cases and gives Liv a reason to take those cases seriously. In terms of bringing that and trusting that, but also watching Clive get better each episode, I always say when you see procedural elements of the show you don’t really see rookies too much. Everyone seems to know what they are doing. Everyone has years of experience, but he is learning on the job day by day. That first case in the pilot is his first collar! He had been working on the job for two months. What I love is the progression of him improving week to week and getting a handle on dealing with each suspect. I love that the producers allow me to play with that and as an actor it is fun to play that growth. Obviously, Clive is a lot more comfortable this season because he has gotten some success. I enjoyed the first season of playing the honest of what that progression is. That was probably one of my favorite parts of playing Clive last season.

Q) Any more investigation into Max Rager?

A) Oh yeah! There is a whole big Max Rager storyline. We have Steven Weber back. There is a whole huge storyline about Max Rager. Obviously, we blew the whistle on them at the end of last season and they don’t take that too lightly. We get to see how that company rebounds from this. Obviously, they know there are zombies out there and they use that to their advantage. It opens up a whole other can of worms in the pre-zombie apocalypse.

Q) Liv has dined on some interesting brains in the past. What can you tease are some delicacies for her this season?

A) The first one of the season is a grumpy, cantankerous older guy who is crass and inappropriate. He is a person who has no barometer on tact. There were some things where Rose said, “Oh my gosh! Do I really have to say that?!” So, she had to go for it and she killed it. She was like, “This is guy is so mean!” It does make for great comedy. She eats the brain of a popular guy in a fraternity and that is also hilarious! Another one she eats is a Seattle housewife. What is really crazy is this the first time we get to see her inhabit a character physically in terms of how the character dresses and takes care of themselves. Rose is a knockout! She has the long nails and the dresses. Liv got to play some dress-up, which is great. That’s also a fun and pretty action packed episode.

Q) Is there anything else you want to be sure that fans know about the season or share with them about their support?

A) We always thank the fans. We try our best to try to show grateful we are for their support. We do social media, fans see us comic conventions and live on the street. It’s so appreciative and we’re so grateful for their support. We wouldn’t have a second season or be doing this again without that fan support. We’re really, really excited for them to see what is in store for the second season. I feel it got bigger and better. What Rob Thomas, Diane Ruggiero and the writing staff with these scripts that I just feel like it is genius. The fans can expect bigger and better. And we’re thankful for all of their support. We’ll be doing a lot more videos this season, we’re going to try to add a lot more behind the scenes stuff and we’ll be more active on social media. Stay tuned for a bunch of exclusive videos and our crazy antics between takes and off camera.

Jefe de 'iZombie' habla sobre la "jugosa" historia de Major en la Season 2: "tenemos grandes planes para él"

Major (Robert Buckley) is on a mission in iZombie season two… and he's not happy about it.

At the end of the premiere, Liv's (Rose McIver) ex-fiance found himself being blackmailed by the evil Max Rager head honcho Vaughn (Steven Weber) to hunt down and kill all the zombies in Seattle, or else Max would take out the one zombie they know of: Liv.

After spying on him, Vaughn found out that since Major was cured of being a zombie, he can now sense when another zombie is around, making him the perfect weapon to take care of the ever-growing zombie population in the city. The hour ended with Major's first ordered kill, a father of two who hadn't done anything wrong besides getting turned into a zombie.

iZombie executive producer Rob Thomas spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about Major's mission this season, how it will affect his already-frosty relationship with Liv, and more.

Last season, Major spent a good chunk of time trying to hunt zombies down on his own. But now that he's being blackmailed to do it by Vaughn, how is his journey going to look different this season?

The huge difference is that last year, he didn't even end up killing any zombies until the finale. And they were murderous bad guys. They were killing the teenagers he worked with. At that point, he was just out to find out who was doing it and trying to make it stop. But this year it's such a tougher position because, through Liv, he knows that these zombies are not zombies of their own free will. They have families and they're good people. Of course, there are probably some bad zombies as well but the first zombie he takes out is a family man, and his kids are crying on the news after he disappears. It's tearing Major up. It's going to be a very different journey for him this year. Last year, it could almost feel like he was on the noble side of things. But this year, he's struggling. It's going to be juicy and fun. We have big plans for him this season.

Obviously he's going to be dealing with the emotional ramifications of this for a while, but is he going to start to fight back against Vaughn and Max Rager at all?

Yeah, he will eventually fight back, but it takes him a while to get his bearings. There's a good deal of paranoia that comes with it, too. He can already tell that Max Rager is following him, and listening in to his conversations. He needs to find out what they know, how they're watching him, what are their weak spots, and once he figures all that out, he'll start to put together a plan.

Major still has feelings for Liv, seeing as how he's doing all this to save her life. How is his secret mission going to affect their relationship moving forward?

This will send Major spiraling into a utopium addiction, and that runs hand-in-hand with his difficult relationship with Liv who isn't as aware as Ravi will be to what Major is going through. Ravi doesn't even know about Major killing zombies but Ravi will at least see the addiction problems firsthand that Liv doesn't. Major will eventually hit rock bottom and, at a certain point, he'll have to throw out a lifeline. The question is whether Major and Liv are too far past the point of repairing their relationship for Liv to be there for him when that happens. We have to take him all the way down, but I wouldn't be a fan if we did that for half of a season. I'd get tired of that pretty quick.

So he will eventually turn to someone for help?

Well, it's interesting. It's a hard story to write because there's really no one he can tell about all this. The network keeps asking, "Well, what's going on in his head? Why is he doing this? What is he thinking?" Do we make Major start keeping a video journal? (Laughs.) There's no one he can confide in about this. But eventually, he goes to take out a zombie and it doesn't go exactly as planned and he gets to have a conversation about it with a zombie who he is abducting, and we finally get to hear a bit about what's in Major's head. But it takes a few episodes to get there. It's written but not shot yet and it's going to be great.

Where did the inspiration come from for the cure's first side effect, with Blaine (David Anders) and Major being able to sense other zombies?

There was a lot of conversation about how we depict Major sensing a zombie. For so long, we were trying to figure it out. We can't have him smell zombies. If we make Robert Buckley play having to sniff a zombie, I mean. (Laughs.) We can't. It would also indicate that Liv smells, or smells like death. We didn't want the audience thinking that, or how dumb it would look. (Laughs.) The discussion to get to "hair standing on end" was just days of talking about that and only that.

Are we going to see other side effects start to present themselves?

The cure is not … well, let's just say that Ravi needs to keep working on the cure. The cure is not perfect in its current form. There will be other stories generated by certain things that the cure lacks that will throw them into the fire more.

Now that Vaughn's assistant Gilda (Leanne Lapp) is posing as Liv's roommate, what are we going to see from that dynamic going forward?

You'll get to learn a lot more about Gilda and who she is and what she wants. Liv certainly doesn't have the same relationship with Gilda, or even something close, to what she had with Peyton. Gilda's a wildcard for Liv and she can't really peg her. Try as she might, Gilda can't convincingly play "friend" to Liv. There's also something a little off about her. I'm not sure if Liv will ever take her completely in, but Gilda will still have this mission of being a step ahead of Liv and Major. It will all come to a head at some point, but not for a very long time.

No wonder iZombie executive producer Rob Thomas has been keeping mum about Major’s arc in Season 2!

At the close of the CW series’ sophomore opener on Tuesday night, Liv’s ex-fiancé was blackmailed by Max Rager into agreeing to kill off all of Seattle’s zombies. In return, Major’s pretty, undead ex stays unharmed. (Oh, and thanks to the cure’s side effects, Major can now sense when somebody is a zombie. Helpful!)

“That is his big mission: to keep himself and Liv alive,” Thomas previews. “In order to do that, he has to take out these zombies. It’s going to be a moral crisis for him. … It will be tearing him apart, and it doesn’t get any easier for him for a long time.”

That said, Major is “not just going to sit back and take it all season,” the EP continues. “At some point, he’s got to figure out how to turn the tables on Max Rager.”

Below, Thomas previews Season 2’s fresh foes, Liv’s shocking new roomie and more. He also weighs in whether a full season order is in the cards for the show.

LIVING WITH THE ENEMY | Max Rager’s plan to keep an eye on Liv by planting Vaughn’s assistant Gilda as her new roommate is paying off. Even though there are potential alarm bells, Gilda won’t be found out any time soon. “We’re writing Episode 12, and it hasn’t happened yet,” Thomas reveals. “She’s clever, that girl. But yeah, I doubt she’ll make it through the season.”

FAMILY RELATIONS | Liv wasn’t exactly on speaking terms with her mother and recuperating brother at the end of the premiere. So how will she make peace with them after refusing to give up her blood to save her sibling’s life — with no explanation? The answer may have to wait a while as “we don’t get back to the family right away,” Thomas says, “but we just shot a couple episodes with them.” Adds fellow EP Diane Ruggiero-Wright: “There are some pretty interesting, cool developments with the family.”

BADDIES GALORE | As “the world is getting bigger” and “more moving parts” come into play in Season 2, the number of villains will grow, Thomas shares. “Last year, Blaine was the sole Big Bad, and this year, Steven Weber [as Max Rager boss Vaughn] is occupying a bunch of that space,” he says. Plus, Blaine — who’s pretending to be a zombie while operating a funeral home for his brain-dealing business — “has really fun, juicy stuff this year. [He] is going to try to become the crime lord of Seattle.” But there’s just one problem: there already is a crime lord of Seattle, named Mr. Boss (played by Ocean’s Eleven’s Eddie Jemison).

THE CURE IS IN THE RODENT | If you’re wondering whether the zombie cure will stick, then you’ll want to keep a close eye on Ravi’s furry, little friend. “We’ve got a whole Flowers for Algernon story playing here,” Thomas describes. “We’ve got the one zombie rat, New Hope, who will be the canary in the coal mine for both Major and Blaine. Once stuff starts happening to that rat, you have to figure that it will eventually happen to [them], as well.”

FULL SEASON, HERE WE COME? | The CW series received an additional five script orders on Monday, but Thomas isn’t stopping at 18 episodes. “I think we’re going to get to do 22,” he says. “I’m feeling bullish. We’re breaking towards 22. If we air on Tuesday and it’s a disaster, I will start thinking about 13. But I feel good. We have nine that play before the break for the holidays, and we built a really big Episode 9. And then 13, we’re treating like an episode on the way to 22. It could change, but that’s how we’re building it.

“I have to say, having done 22-episode seasons on Veronica Mars — and it’s been a long time since I’ve done it — it is a slog. Like last year, doing 13, it was so great. If I didn’t like money…” he adds with a laugh. “Thirteen is such a good number. But I’d still rather do 22.”
