(@mskristinkreuk: Growing up in Vancouver, I never had to buy a proper winter coat(jacket? I can never remember the correct word); most years it just rained from October to May. Despite the bare deciduous trees, it stayed green and alive. Living in Toronto has forced/allowed me to develop a yearly ritual around winter. Here, it actually gets cold. Here, you need a proper winter coat. And the ground freezes, the trees are naked, and everything really does feel dead. Which was, at first, very bleak. But it is kind of the introvert's season--a time to turn inward, to reflect and recharge. As cheesy as it sounds, I have found that using the season to reflect on mutability and impermanence has made winter far less dreadful.
As I read this silliness over, I am aware that I am insanely privileged to be able to consider winter in abstract terms. If you have the means, perhaps consider donating warm clothes or giving to a charity this winter. Covenant House has locations all over North America. And it is likely that your town has something at jives with what's important to you.
Happy Sunday, kids. Sorry for long post. Oy.
