From repairing cardiac walls to curating film festivals – it’s all in a day’s work for actress Michelle Nolden, who plays Charlie’s caustic cardiac surgeon ex-wife on “Saving Hope” and is also the artistic director for Lakeshorts International Short Film Festival.
“My husband and I started the festival three years ago,” Nolden says about film and television producer, Chris Szarka. “I was sitting on a programming committee for Lakeshore Arts and we had a night called, ‘My Neighbour is an Artist.’ We got a few local film makers and showed some short films. It was a huge success so we decided to take it to the next level and here it is!”
The project has quickly expanded from a homegrown event to an international short film festival with 170 international submissions this year.
“Not everything knows about short (films) and how great they can be,” Nolden says.
On Friday, May 3, Lakeshorts will premiere the Loved and Local screening, featuring emerging and local filmmakers as well as selected award winners from the Gala held the following evening. Loved and Local is hosted by acting celebrity duo Gabe Hogan and Inga Cadranel.
Hosted by renowned film critic Richard Crouse, the Gala Performance on Saturday, May 4 will feature a dynamic program of films by filmmakers from Canada and around the world, including the festival award winners.
“Flashpoint” fans will be thrilled to learn that Enrico Colantoni’s film “Issues” will have two screenings, and will be awarded the Steam Whistle Brewery Home Grown Award.
“I’m always the most excited to see people’s reactions to the films,” Nolden says. “We always try to throw a few controversial ones in there, real discussion provokers.
“I’ve been trying my hand and directing and writing and realizing all the other aspects (of the craft) have made me really appreciate just what it takes to make a film or television show,” Nolden reflects.
“I find the shorts really inspiring. There are some really amazing ones. I think it just rounds out my acting world.”

Perhaps the only people more excited than “Saving Hope’s” devoted fans are its stars, Erica Durance, Michael Shanks and Daniel Gillies.
“I’m excited for everyone to see Charlie and Alex together again,” Durance says on the CTV Upfront red carpet. “There are great, cataclysmic tragedies that happen and every episode there’ll be some great medical procedures, a lot of heart and a lot of great moments between Alex and Joel.”
When the first season ended, Charlie had woken up from his coma (yay!) but it turns out he can still see ghosts (boo). And if that wasn’t enough, Alex was left waiting at the altar.
“You find them coming back from a trip to tragedy and thrust right back into work and right back into their lives,” Durance says. “It’s all about Alex trying to figure out who she is and how she and Charlie are going to work now that he’s back.”
“I’m excited to work with everybody!” Shanks says, sporting a bit of a beard. “You know, standing up, moving around, doing surgeries and interacting with the other actors!
“It feels like starting a whole new show, because I get to play with the other actors in the sand box!”
So, did he consider sporting his now infamous tux from Season 1 to this red carpet event?
“I did not, oddly enough,” he says with a laugh. “Although I do miss the ol’ thing. “I’m always in grubby scrubs, though they’re really comfy. It’s all PJs all the time!
“Whenever I see Daniel in a suit on set , I get a little jealous.”
So what is Gillies, whose character Joel Goran is now playing the new Chief of Surgery, excited about?
“I’m really excited for people to see Charlie coming back to the land of the living and enjoying and exploring being reunited with his love, Alex. I’m excited to see Alex being a bit more hands on in the procedures and I’m excited see Joel balance his administrative duties with his deep love of being a surgeon.
“The confluences of all those forces are going to make for a great season.”
And though he’s excited about the premiere of “Saving Hope,” he’s even more excited for the arrival of his first child in September.
He won’t reveal if it’s a boy or a girl, and says he is still uncertain on the name front. “I’m circling a few, but I haven’t found anything that leaps out at me yet. I’m excited. I can’t wait!”
