Arrow is pointed in a very dark direction when the CW series resumes Season 4 this Wednesday at 8/7c. Who if anyone will be able or willing to stop him from crossing lines in the name of revenge?

When last we tuned in, Damien Darhk had ordered a brutal attack on the limousine taking Oliver and his fiancee Felicity away from a campaign event. Oliver escaped unscathed, but Felicity took a lot of fire. With his love in no condition to quell his anger, Oliver’s want for revenge is at risk of going unchecked. Or will he receive unexpected counsel from a frenemy?

Executive producer Wendy Mericle shared what’s ahead for the superhero series.

TVLINE | What are you most excited about, from the back half of this season?
I think we’re really excited to see the final confrontation between Oliver and Damien Darhk. I mean, this is the first season we’ve launched a Big Bad in the premiere and tracked him all the way through. When we left at the end of 2015, he’d obviously done something really horrifying. One of the things we’ve been most excited about is exploring how Oliver’s going to react — What is he going to do, and will he go back on who he’s become, and become darker? Will he go back to more of a Season 1 type Oliver, who’s willing to kill, to go to those dark places to get revenge?

TVLINE | In that respect, who’s the angel on his shoulder and who’s the devil?
Felicity was always the angel on his shoulder — and whether she is or is not going forward I will leave everyone to find out when Episode 410 airs. But Dig is interestingly also someone who’s always been his moral compass, and one of the things that’s interesting about this season is that we have taken everybody who would normally rein Oliver in to their own morally compromised and dark places. So I don’t know that anyone is necessarily going to be there to stop him. Even Thea is struggling with her own bloodlust. The one person that might be helpful to him is Malcolm. What the viewers will see is we’re going to have him give Oliver some very interesting and helpful advice. And obviously we’re going to blow that up. It will bring them a bit closer together, though, which will give us some really juicy stuff when we start to break them back apart.

TVLINE | How bad of shape is Felicity in? How many bullets did she take?
She took a lot. Damien really wanted revenge on Oliver, he wanted to hit him hard and hit him where it hurts. What we saw was brutal and that’s what happened to her. It’s very brutal.

TVLINE | The trailer out there hints at complications if Felicity survives, and that of course spawned Oracle theories. And her Season 3 origin episode did for a time have the word “Oracle” in it. Is that on the table, off the table…?
It’s off the table. That’s something we definitely talked about [doing] with her in the beginning and yeah, people have to tune in to see what happens and what happened. But yeah, it will not be Oracle, sadly.

TVLINE | Do viewers have enough information yet to know exactly what Damien Darhk’s Genesis plan is all about?
No. You don’t. One of the challenges in introducing a Big Bad early is his plan has to be even more elaborate than previous supervillains, and that’s one of the things we love doing this season, teasing out little bits of cool info. So we were really excited by that subterranean [room], because it will come back. It won’t be until the end of the season but you’ll definitely know what that was for.

TVLINE | Would you call his plan insidious, misguided, Machiavellian…?
It’s megalomaniacal. He thinks he’s a new god.

TVLINE | Oh, that’s all.
Just a new god! A new world ruler. [Laughs] He’s going small.

TVLINE | You gave us a glimpse of his family at Christmastime. How will that inform this Big Bad?
What we always try to do is allow our supervillains to in some way, shape or form be the hero of their own story. Damien Darhk is nothing but evil, but in introducing his family we felt it was an interesting contrast and something that would help give him dimension. It will eventually help us understand what his uber-agenda is, but in the moment what we like about it is the visual contrast of trimming the tree with his family while his men are shooting Felicity. But also, we really wanted to give him human dimension in a way but not in service of humanizing him. His wife, we’ll come to find out, also has her own dark agenda — no pun intended.

TVLINE | What’s next for Dig and Andy?
Dig and Andy are going to have some ups and downs. There’s going to be a big wallop of a surprise coming toward the end of the season. We wanted to give Dig his own journey and give the viewers the opportunity to really see his family and dig into more of his backstory, and we are going to deliver on that. There’s going to be a lot more of Andy coming up.

TVLINE | I love that you didn’t just “flip a switch” with Andy and have him be all better and become part of the team. You’ve kept us guessing what’s going on inside his head.
Yes, and Eugene Byrd (Bones) is just a tremendous actor. He’s bringing a lot to that role, so we’re writing to that for sure.

TVLINE | The fact that Damien’s power is neutered by Thea, will that come back into play?
It will definitely be a factor — especially for Oliver. It’s going to present him with some interesting moral questions and challenges.

TVLINE | It seems like her immunity could be used as a weapon against Damien.
Yes, that is definitely an interesting way to go.

TVLINE | Though there was some confusion about whether she was reflecting his power, or blocking it.
In our mind, she was more deflecting it, basically. She is immune to it, because the Pit has given her a certain amount of power. If you want to get scientific about it with fake science, something in her bloodstream allows her to repel his powers — and that’s something that he as a former member of the League [of Assassins] is surprised by.

TVLINE | For what purpose are you bringing back Roy?
Whenever we bring people back – same with Sara — we always have a very specific character reason in mind. We wanted to see Colton [Haynes] again, we wanted to bring Roy back into the fold — at least temporarily. He’s going to have a really cool and emotional story with Oliver and Thea when he comes back.

TVLINE | Speaking of Thea’s love interests, what’s the plan for Parker Young’s Alex?
Obviously he’s got two places on the show, including as Oliver’s campaign manager, so he’ll factor into the Damien Darhk and Oliver story going forward, because Damien is not backing off of [his attacks], you’ll come to find out. But the more interesting piece for us is his relationship with Thea. It’s going to have some ups and downs, but we like their chemistry. He’s her chance at normalcy and we’ll see whether she grabs it.

TVLINE | What was the thinking behind bumping up Donna’s presence this season? What has the show gained?
A couple of things. First, the audience and us, we love Charlotte [Ross]. She brings a definite, different energy to the show. And for us, in terms of expanding the world and the goal being creatively to see more of Felicity’s and Dig’s backstories and character and explore them more, she’s crucial to that. She’s someone other than Oliver for Felicity to talk to, and she has a longer view and a deeper understanding of who Felicity is and who she was in the past, and that is extremely helpful when you’re trying to accomplish exactly that in story. She’s a great actor and she brings some fun comedy and different storytelling possibilities with her.

TVLINE | Of course, by pairing her with Lance, you’ve increased the odds of him being the one in the flash-forward grave.
[Laughs] Everyone wants to know! It’s a very good question. We shall see.

TVLINE | The last time we spoke, you said we might get another flash-forward to inform that mystery….
There will be a flash-forward sometime in the next few months, yes. It’s somewhere between [Episodes] 10 and 15, I’ll tell you that.

TVLINE | Megalyn E.K. (The 4400) is heading over as a live-action Vixen. How does she figure into things? Will it be a standalone outing?
It will be a standalone, yes. We really needed someone to come in and give Oliver some help with magic. One of the things we’ve been exploring this season is “How does Oliver deal with magic, specifically with Damien?,” and she comes in for a very high-stakes, amazing episode. She’s done a great job [voicing] the cartoon on CW Seed and she’s a tremendous actor in her own right. We’re really excited.

Guggenheim llama a "Legends of Tomorrow" una 'carta de amor al DCU' y define lo qie es 'Místico' en la S4 de "Arrow"
Por Johan Weiland 19 Enero, 2016

Marc Guggenheim has built stellar careers in both television and comic books, and despite keeping busy as the co-showrunner of The CW's "Arrow," he just can't stop creating and working on even more new things.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know that The CW is about to debut its third DC Comics-based series this week, "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," co-created by Guggenheim, Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg. "Legends" follows a rag-tag group of heroes and villains established on "Arrow" and "The Flash" who are assembled by time traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) for a new mission -- traveling through time to stop Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from wrecking the future.

Speaking to Jonah Weiland in the CBR Speakeasy, Guggenheim discussed what sets "Legends of Tomorrow" apart from everything else on television, why the show stars the characters it does and how each episode is different from every other. He also discusses "Arrow's" mystical turn in Season Four, how that allowed for John Constantine (Matt Ryan) to pay a visit even after his own series on NBC was cancelled, and whether we can expect a return engagement. Guggenheim also talks about why he never wants to stop writing comics and the draw of his new "Agents of SHIELD" ongoing series from Marvel, which allows him to scratch some of the same itches in the Marvel Comics Universe that "Legends of Tomorrow" allows him to do on television.

In the first part of his interview with CBR TV, "Arrow" Guggenheim explains the genesis of The CW's third DC Comics-based series and what sets it apart from everything else on TV -- including "Arrow" and "The Flash." He also discusses the slippery slope that is time travel, whether or not the series is inherently more difficult to create and produce, and which character relationship has surprised him the most.

On why "Legends of Tomorrow" centers on lesser known DC heroes:

Marc Guggenheim: We had great actors. We had Wentworth Miller. We had Dominic Purcell. We had Caity Lotz. We had Brandon Routh. We had Victor Garber. We just, we had them. Already. I think a good chunk of television, it's really about casting. We had this incredible cast so it would kind of be criminal, from a TV perspective, not to build a show around these amazing actors.

It was very much a function of, we were thinking about, "Are we gonna do a third show? We're only gonna do it if it's different enough. It's gotta be its own unique thing." And sort of we were having our own conversations and Mark Pedowitz was doing his own thinking, he's the head of the CW, and we arrived at the same math, which is, "Hey, wait a second. We have these incredible actors playing these great characters -- there's a show there." And that's really where it started.

On whether a show like "Legends of Tomorrow" is harder to create, produce and market than "Arrow" or "The Flash":

It is. We definitely doubled down on the degree of difficulty. It takes, you know, the visual effects established on "The Flash" and applies them to all these different characters, all of whom have super powers or abilities -- we went crazy. There's a part of me that wants to say, you don't ground it, you just let it go nuts. And there's a certain element of us certainly doing that. I think the way you ground it is it's in the characters. I always say, people are gonna come for the spectacle, but they'll stay for the character dynamics. The spectacle, the visual effects, the production value, all that's well and good and it'll hopefully get people to watch, but eventually that becomes old hat and eventually you have to deliver the goods from a storytelling perspective and you can't just throw visual effects at everything. I think that's what we've done.

The first two episodes were originally conceived of as one, two-hour event, and we ended up breaking them up into two episodes. That's probably sort of why you feel like, "Oh, Episode 1 is this, Episode 2 is that." I will say, we're now writing Episode 12 and there is not a single episode I can point to that's like any other. This show is very unique in the sense that it literally is a different thing week to week to week to week. There's no villain of the week to sort of ground us from a storytelling perspective -- it really is its own animal. If you don't like -- I'm picking numbers out of the air -- if you don't like Episode 4, stick around, Episode 5 is totally different.

On the perils and promise of time travel:

I'm always the first to admit we are incredibly fast and loose with time travel rules. I always like to say, if you're someone who is turning in purely for the strict rules of time travel, and how they will be articulated and followed to the letter, honestly, probably not the show for you. The show uses time travel and we go to different corners of the DC Universe -- the show functions on a lot of different levels. One of the reasons I'm proud of it is that it works as a character drama -- it's almost like a family drama -- it works as spectacle, it works as a comic book come to life. It also, quite frankly, it works as this total crazy, nutbar combination of things. And that combination of things is really a love letter to the DC Universe. When you say which corners are we visiting, we're visiting them all. We're in prep on an episode right now that takes place in the Old West, we meet Jonah Hex. The show's a love letter to the DC Universe.

In the second half of the interview, Marc Guggenheim explains when in Season Three the show's writers knew what direction Season Four would take, how that allowed for "Constantine's" Matt Ryan to visit, and definitively explains fans can expect to encounter him again. The busy writer also talks about how he maintains his hectic schedule and why, amid many other projects in both TV and comics, he decided to tackle Marvel's new "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." ongoing comic series and the goals he has set for himself in the Marvel Universe.

On why this season of "Arrow" introduced occult and supernatural elements:

Each season has sort of required of us to come up with a theme or come up with a central concept behind it. In Season Two we sort introduced the idea of metahumans, in Season Three it was the League of Assassins. We were looking for something for Season Four and I think, you know, we always get to a point in the previous season where we start talking about the next season. We got to a point in Season Three and we were talking about the lazarus pit and we were talking about R'as al Ghul and there's this idea of mysticism that we really haven't a) explored on the show apart from the lazarus pit but b) fits very much into the voice of the show, and the take and tone of the show. If you go back and look at like, I think it's episode 3x15, Oliver basically says, "I've seen some stuff you can't explain." That was us sort of -- we love to plant a flag and say, "Look for that next season." And that's when we knew what we were gonna do in Season Four.

On whether John Constantine could have ever visited "Arrow" if "Constantine" remained on NBC:

I'm gonna get in trouble for saying this, but, dammit, who cares. Back when "Constantine" was on, we were talking about a crossover and then "Constantine" wasn't on so we stopped talking about a crossover. And then it was like, was it gonna show up somewhere else. Well, we can't talk about a crossover now. It took a while, but yeah, it was something -- I think it was actually something Matt Ryan and Stephen [Amell] started talking. It was always in the cards.

On whether another Constantine visit could happen:

When we were given the character, we were given the character with the understanding and the agreement that this was a one-off.

On what drew him to write the ongoing "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." comic book:

To answer that question, I have to answer the question why comics in the first place. Because you're right, I'm busy with television, why write comics, it doesn't pay as well. I do it really for the love of the game. I love writing comics, and I love bouncing back and forth between the Marvels and DCs, where it's the characters I grew up with, and the creator-owned stuff like "Stringers" and "Jonas Quantum" that I'm creating on my own. And I love working with the folks at Marvel -- I probably should say that because of DC -- but I love the books at Marvel and I've been working with them for over ten years now and they're amazing.

The way "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." quite frankly came about was, it was like last June, I went to lunch with a whole bunch of the Marvel editors I've been working with, because a) I was in town, and also I was wrapping up my "Secret Wars" tie-ins and everything. And I was like, "Oh, I'm kind of running out of stuff to write." And pretty much at the end of the lunch [editor] Katie Kubert said to me, "Really? Are you really available?" "Yeah, I'm totally available." She's like, "I could really use a pitch on 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'" There was a split second where I thought, that could really be weird if this ends up happening. For the longest time I think people put "Arrow" and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." in competition with each other, but at the same time, again, because I do it for the love of the game and I love the Marvel Universe, I really got excited about the idea of doing "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." essentially as, like, this could allow me to visit every corner of the Marvel Universe I could think of. Unlike other Marvel books I've done where it's X-Men or Spider-Man or Blade where you're in that corner, what's great about "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is it goes everywhere and they interact with everybody.

My sort of high-concept for the book is it's "Mission: Impossible," it's James Bond, but unlike James Bond and "Mission: Impossible" where they go to these exotic locales and it's all about visiting different places, different countries, this is different corners of the Marvel Universe. I try very hard -- and like Paris appears in the second issue -- but for the most part I want to go to Wakanda, I want to go to Attilan, I want to go to Genosha, I want to go to these different places that are unique to the Marvel Universe. That's just so much fun for me, and it's worth, quite frankly, it's worth making time for. It's been a blast to write.

- ¿Se volverá Oliver oscuro tras el tiroteo de Felicity? (EW):
¿Se volverá Oliver oscuro tras el tiroteo de Felicity?
Por Natalie Abrams 19 enero, 2016

In the wake of Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) being shot in the Arrow midseason finale, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is determined to put a stop to Damien Darhk’s (Neal McDonough) nefarious plans — but will Ollie revert to his old ways of killing criminals in the process?

“He’s going to pull out all the stops,” executive producer Wendy Mericle tells EW. “We’ll see him in real fire and brimstone. The gloves are off. It’s eye for an eye. He’ll stop at nothing.”

While the team will attempt to rein him in — “I don’t think any of them are going to let him fully revert to the darkest of dark places that he’s been,” Mericle says — Oliver will struggle with falling back into old habits. “We haven’t seen Oliver really fall in love on the show before,” Mericle says. “He really is in love with her, so this is a huge event that’s happened in the midseason finale. He’s definitely made big steps toward changing and becoming a new kind of hero, but the fact is, he’s still got those years of living on the island in the darkness and those tendencies inside him. We’re really going to explore the question: Can people change? We’re excited to explore that through the prism of Oliver.”

Speaking of the island, the Oliver of the past faces a new challenge after Conklin (Ryan Robbins) discovered that Taiana (Elysia Rotaru) is actually still alive in the fall finale. “Oliver’s cover has been blown,” Mericle says. “The most fun part of the flashbacks is the dynamic between him and Conklin. We’re really going to be seeing those chickens come home to roost. Oliver’s going to make enemies, not just with the guards, but with the prisoners as well. He’s going to find himself without a lot of friends going forward in the flashbacks.”

As for the big question of the hour — what’s Felicity’s fate?! — Mericle teases, “She’s obviously been through a hugely traumatic event. She’s faced with a lot of challenges, not just physical, but emotional as well. She’s got the team rallying around her.”

Jefe de ‘Arrow’ insinúa quién está en la tumba y la búsqueda de venganza de Oliver en la Midseason Premiere
Por Laura Prudom 20 enero, 2016

It’s been a long winter break for fans of The CW’s “Arrow,” after December’s midseason finale left Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) on death’s door following a brutal attack from Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough). Given that cliffhanger, it should come as no surprise that when the superhero series returns on Wednesday night, we’ll see our hero, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), “falling back into some old habits,” according to executive producer Wendy Mericle. “[He’s] going very fire and brimstone in his attempt to get revenge for Damien’s attack on him and Felicity.”

Mericle promises that episode 410, “Blood Debts,” will “pick up in a very dark place” for Team Arrow. “We’re really intrigued by the idea of seeing what happens when Oliver has someone he loves as much as he loves Felicity get hurt like that, and we’re intrigued by what he would do.”

Darhk’s attack will put him firmly in Oliver’s crosshairs, but Mericle teases that even as the vigilante is “dead set on getting Darhk and making sure that he never hurts anyone again, we also get some very interesting human insight into Darhk in this episode. It doesn’t necessarily complicate matters as much for Oliver, but it definitely does for the team, and it makes Oliver’s task quite a bit harder. We’re hoping that will provide some interesting challenges and context as they continue to battle through the rest of the season.”

With Felicity’s life in the balance, the show intends to keep us guessing about the identity of the person in the grave seen in the flashforward from the Season 4 premiere. Mericle says we’ll finally learn who dies “towards the end of the season. I can’t tell you which episode – you’ll have to watch! But it’s big stakes and it’s going to be a big shock, so we want to make sure that we handle it with as much care as possible, and that means making sure that we are ramping into it in all the right ways, so that pushes it towards the last few episodes of the season.”

Co-Showrunner de "Arrow" sobre la 'bendición y maldición' de los Crossovers y los peligrosos viejos hábitos de Oliver
Por Albert Ching, 20 enero 2016

Though she's been a part of the show since the first season, "Arrow" Season Four saw Wendy Mericle step into a brand new role, that of co-showrunner. And in a season that has already introduced a major new villain in Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and featured a major crossover with "The Flash" that helps set up the third DC Comics-based CW series, "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," it goes without saying that she's had her work cut out for her.

Ahead of tonight's midseason premiere which features the aftermath of the attack on Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), Mericle spoke with Managing Editor Albert Ching in the CBR Speakeasy about all things "Arrow," from her new responsibilities to the second half of Season Four. The conversation covers everything from whether we can expect Oliver to go Season One-style dark, what sets Damien Darhk apart from new villains and what the arrival of Vixen (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and return of Roy (Colton Haynes) mean for the series. All that, plus plenty of talk about how the writers manage to juggle the crossovers with seaso-long stories and how they're keeping fresh as the oldest superhero show currently on The CW.

In the first part of the conversation, Wendy Mericle explains how her role on "Arrow" has changed since Season One and what it means for her to become a co-showrunner on the CW series. She explains what themes "Arrow" is attempting to work with this season and whether the events of the midseason finale will lead to Oliver Queen returning to some of his darker former methods as the fight against Damien Darhk continues.

On making the transition to co-showrunner in "Arrow" Season Four:

It's funny, the way I describe it is just you get a lot more emails. [Laughs] You leave your desk for ten minutes, you come back, there are 40 emails for you. No, it's exciting. The guys had always created a very collaborative environment for everybody on the staff, but this season, just to be able to be in some of those high level conversations with the studio and the network about where we're headed and what we're doing, it's been very exciting. And to feel that I have a little bit more power and a little bit more say in terms of putting a stamp on the series, it's been a really exciting year.

On the main themes the show's writers wanted to explore this season:

The two main themes we are exploring this season are family and magic and we are going to be getting even more deeply involved in both of those with respect, not just to Oliver, but Felicity and Diggle and kind of exploring their backstories. Especially Dig, we're going to be resolving and exploring more some of the things he's been going through with his brother Andy.

With Oliver we are going to see how he can take on Damien Darhk without actually wanting to explore magic on his own. Oliver, in the past, as we've seen with Baron Reiter is very nervous about exploring magic, believes that it can only lead to dark places. And in the back half of our season he's going to be challenged to explore magic from a different angle and see if he can use it for good.

In part two, Mericle discusses the season's "Flash" ties and what it's been like introducing new characters who will play a role on "Legends of Tomorrow" while still telling stories that stay true to the core of "Arrow," as well as whether fans can expect more Star City-based stories moving forward. Turning to the subject of Neal McDonough's Damien Darhk, the co-showrunner describes what it's been like creating a different kind of villain, how the writers attempt to keep "Arrow" from becoming stale as the "oldest child" in the CW's DC TV universe and what to expect from Vixen's live-action debut and the return of Roy.

On the challenges of telling crossover stories that tie into and set up storylines and characters from other series:

It's always a challenge. I mean, the crossover episodes are so popular and we get such a huge response from the fans that there's no way that we can't do them now. But logistically and schedule-wise, and with the actors, and now we're adding "Legends" into the mix, I think we really felt coming into the season that we'd mastered this whole thing with "Flash." "We've got this down, guys." And then bam, in comes "Legends" and we have to figure out a way to incorporate that so that we launch Hawkgirl and Hawkman out of that. And in addition, you know, we had to kind of get Ray Palmer back, explain what happened to him and launch him into "Legends," and the same with Sara Lance.

It's kind of both a blessing and a curse. You have a lot of story that you have to deal with and the hard part is how are you going to make it all work within the space of, really, nine episodes -- or fewer than that because you've gotta set up your season as well.

On how they attempt to keep the show fresh four seasons in as the veteran of the DC TV universe:

It's 100 percent true and we often feel that way, that we're the oldest child that has to watch all the younger ones get all the attention. [Laughter] But it's a couple of things, because we have that universe to contend with, which is just limited to The CW. But [Executive Producer] Greg Berlanti always says, and he's right, we're competing on a much larger scale. We're competing with all the Marvel stuff; we're competing with DC movies. I mean, this is the same audience and film and TV have converged to such an extent that you really do have to keep the caliber of the production values high and bringing in new characters is also a key thing. We've been so excited to have Echo [Kellum] on the show, we think he's a fantastic addition, and also Alexander Calvert's been amazing as Anarchy. Those are two characters we'd like to explore going forward in further seasons if we can, pending actor availability and all that stuff. But it's great, we do feel like we've reinvented the show a little bit this season. We've closed the first three chapters in the first three seasons and looking forward, looking ahead, you have to constantly grow your show, you have to constantly bring in new people and we've been really lucky to get great people for that.

On the return of Colton Haynes as Roy:

Roy will be coming back to the show in a very surprising way. He'll be, like Oliver, sort of falling back into some old habits. We just actually cut that episode and there's a scene between him and Thea that will hopefully make everybody cry, it's just amazing. Colton and Willa [Holland] are just gangbusters together onscreen.

In the final part of our conversation with Mericle, she explains how "Arrow" always keeps Oliver Queen at the center of all stories even while it tries to balance an increasing supporting cast and tell different kinds of stories. Mericle also comments on what it was like growing up without a television and what series from her time before TV she's discovered in the years since.

On how the writers manage Team Arrow and the show's supporting cast as well as Oliver Queen's storylines:

It's tricky. When we break the stories, the first character we talk about is Oliver whether it's a Dig episode or a Felicity episode or whoever we might be focusing on that week. It always has to in some way involve Oliver. He has to be active, and ideally it has some emotional resonance for him. That said, I feel like this season, more than in previous years even, we've allowed ourselves to stray from the model and the way we've been breaking episodes in the past and to really explore more what is it like to have an episode where maybe Oliver does take a little bit more of a back seat. We've seen Dig step up and be a leader, and we've seen more Felicity-centric episodes as well, so I think -- you have to do it gradually, you have to be smart about it, you don't want to alienate the audience that is there just to see Oliver Queen kick ass and go through big challenges. But you do also, to keep it alive, to keep it interesting, you do want to expand the universe a little bit.

Jefe de 'Arrow' analiza la revelación del Flash-Forward y la "nueva realidad" de Felicity
Por Sydney Bucksbaum 20 Enero, 2016 6:00pm PT

Arrow just crossed one name off the list of Damien Dahrk's (Neil McDonough) potential victims.

The grave revealed in the flash-forward storyline, which both Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Barry (Grant Gustin) visit to pay their respects and vow to get revenge on Dahrk for putting that person in the grave, is not occupied by Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards). The final scene of the midseason premiere instead showed that Oliver's fiancée was waiting for him in the limo at the cemetery, so "Olicity" fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

However, the fan-favorite couple still have other hurdles to overcome. It was also revealed that, due to Dahrk's attack, Felicity will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Arrow executive producer Wendy Mericle about what this means for Oliver and Felicity's relationship going forward, why they chose to reveal that Felicity is not the person in the grave and more.

That final scene is going to inspire so many new fan theories about who is in the grave.

As we intended. (Laughs.)

Now that it officially isn't Felicity, have you decided in the writers room who it the person in the grave is going to be?

We have a pretty good idea, but as always on the show, we try to take stories and break them from an organic place. Truth be told, the episode is not written yet. We have a good idea but nothing is ever done until it's done. It's not a full question mark with us, but there are still some questions. We still have to figure stuff out.

When will that episode come about?

I can't tell you exactly which episode, but it will definitely be closer to the end [of season four] than to right now.

Why did you decide to reveal that it wasn't Felicity?

Honestly, that came from a place of wanting to play fair with the audience. At the end of [episode] 409, that was the question on everyone's mind. And rightfully so. She was brutally attacked and as we know now, she suffers a very significant spinal cord injury as a result. But the question of Felicity being in the grave, we really felt it was asked and answered by these two episodes. To continue teasing that just wouldn't be fair to the audience and it felt like we could raise the stakes in more interesting ways by shifting focus elsewhere.

In the present day storyline, Felicity just learned that she is never going to walk again, but she seemed pretty calm about the whole diagnosis. How is this going to affect her going forward?

What we're going for with this, as much as possible on a DC Comics show, is to try to play the reality of someone going through something that difficult and challenging. At the moment where you see her, it's in a place of shock with respect to her own issues and shifting her focus on Oliver and making sure he doesn't fall back into old habits and do something he would regret. Going forward, it's not going to be easy. The reality is, making an adjustment of that kind for someone at her age, it's not an easy thing to do. We wanted to be as respectful and real towards people who are facing that reality and explore the ups and downs of it. So yes, you see her calm in [episode] 410, but I don't think it's realistically possible for anyone to very calmly accept this new reality. She'll be dealing with this for the next few episodes, at least.

A lot of fans have always hypothesized that Felicity was on the path to becoming Oracle. Now that she's wheelchair-bound, should fans read into that theory again?

To echo my co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim, Oracle is still off the table. It was really never our intention to go that direction. We wanted to throw Felicity some big curve balls this season. And this seemed like an interesting way to go. We want to explore what her place is going to be on the team and her relationship with Oliver. It was less about trying to honor Oracle, which is obviously a great comic book character, and more about trying to playing the reality of this situation for her.

Oliver wasn't by her side throughout her whole hospital stay, although she didn't seem mad or upset about it. Is their relationship going to be affected by her diagnosis?

The traditional way would have been to have her be really upset that he wasn't by her side. But the nice thing about Felicity and Oliver is that she's been with him since season one. She understands who he is and what he's been through. She knew and, I hope this played in that last scene with them in the hospital, she understood that this is what he was going to do. He wasn't going to rest until Dahrk was off the board. Even though he doesn't succeed in accomplishing that, he does realize his mistake. That's what we love about this season. Oliver is evolving and he's able to see, "Oh, that's what old Oliver would have done, and this Oliver is not going to leave your side going forward." That's the progress he's made.

How is this going to affect the dynamic of Team Arrow now that Felicity is going to be in a wheelchair?

The rest of the team will welcome her with open arms. Obviously they will want to give her space to deal with her new reality but they do not see it as any sort of limitation for her in any way whatsoever. For her, it's adjusting to a whole new world and how she's going to navigate that world. She herself is going to be dealing with it more than the team. The team loves her and will do anything for her. But this experience will challenge Felicity in a direct way.

The new sizzle reel for the second half of the season showed Thea (Willa Holland) back in the hospital on life support. What puts her there?

She's been grappling with her blood lust all season, and as much as it seems like Damien Dahrk whammy-ing her in [episode] 407 put that to bed, it is going to come back in a surprising and visceral way. That's the root of how she ends up where she ends up in that trailer.

The trailer also showed Roy's (Colton Haynes) big return to Star City, suiting up in his Red Arrow costume along with the rest of the team. What brings him back after essentially getting out clean?

We're so excited to have Colton back. I don't want to give too much away, but I can tell you that he and Thea will have some really moving scenes together. We're going to raise some interesting questions about their relationship and also when we meet him again, he is going to, just like Oliver in [episode] 410, have slipped back into some very, very old habits. We'll be wondering what the hell happened between the last time we saw him and now.

Jefe de Arrow habla sobre el destino de Felicity, esa noticia bomba del futuro y el nuevo enemigo de Darhk
Por Matt Webb Mitovich / 20 Enero 2016, 5:59 PM PST

This Wednesday on The CW’s Arrow, we not only learned of Felicity’s post-gunshot fate, we also were able to rule out one possibility for the Mystery Grave. The latest flash-forward, however, dropped a whole other bombshell on us.

Because although it has now been revealed that Felicity is very much alive four months down the road, it appears her engagement to Oliver may be pushing up daisies, judging by her bare ring finger.

Here, executive producer Wendy Mericle fields some of our burning questions about limousine tension, the cursed “him” and more midseason premiere topics.

TVLINE | As hinted, we got a new flash-forward. Now, I know you didn’t know at the beginning of the season, but do you know now who’s in the grave?
I would say that we have a pretty good idea, but that episode is not written yet. We always leave things open to change, but yeah. I think we have a pretty good idea.

TVLINE | Can you at least confirm that the “him” that everybody keeps referring to with gritted teeth in the flash-forwards is Damien Darhk? Or is that another of the mysteries?
No. I can’t confirm that, actually. That’s another mystery I’m going to leave to be unfolded at a later date.

TVLINE | Did I sense some tension in the limo there, between Oliver and Felicity? Are things maybe not going well for them four months down the road?
I definitely think there is some tension and we’re actually very intrigued to see if fans pick up on a very big clue about where they are at that point in their relationship. It’s in the scene, and it’s a visual clue. [Spoiler alert: Someone’s ring finger is bare!]

TVLINE | Are you going to revisit the William/Sandra storyline any time soon?
I cannot tell you anything about that.

TVLINE | What was Emily Bett Rickards’ reaction to the paralysis storyline when she learned about it?
She was intrigued, and she was totally game. She was excited because it’s a new challenge, obviously, to be dealing with this kind of permanent disability. I think most actors get excited about any sort of real “left turn” like that, and she was no exception.

TVLINE | It has to be a bit scary for an actor, though. Because for one, you want to do it justice. You want to properly depict the experience. But also, on such an action-heavy show, you almost hate for that agility to be taken from your character.
It’s true, and we’ve had discussions about that, obviously, just to talk about it and see where the character is going. We definitely do want to do it justice and we do want to be very sensitive to the reality of people in that situation.

TVLINE | Was Anarky introduced at the start of the season for the purpose of later serving this week’s story point — rooting out Darhk and setting Oliver up to save his enemy’s family — or did it just wonderfully work out that way?
We always had the intention, actually, of having Anarky be somebody that could come back in and out of our storylines. Not when we needed him to, but hopefully in a way that was organic and would most mess up our characters’ plans, and that’s really what happens in 410. He started out as one kind of villain and he’s gotten darker and more twisted in the aftermath of the events of 402, and now he is literally anarchy, whereas Damien and Oliver provide a counterbalance to each other in the traditional kind of good/evil paradigm. Anarky’s a wildcard that can come in and upend both of their plans with absolutely no remorse and no mercy, and we love that.

TVLINE | You didn’t have to have Anarky go after Damien’s family. You didn’t have to have Oliver save Damien’s family. What did you gain by having Oliver “earn” this few-week respite?
What we really wanted to do this season was follow a supervillain, Damien Darhk, from the beginning of the season and get more deeply into not just his psyche but what his life is day to day — and I think what we really like about having his family there is that it complicates things in a big way for Oliver. I mean, he’s bent on revenge based on what happened to his own family in [the fall finale], and yet, there he is saving Damien’s family. It creates a very interesting moral dilemma for him. He actually stayed on the ethical side, but it raises significant questions. To see Oliver actually make the decision not to go whole hog and take out everybody… we consider that growth for this character.

TVLINE | I kind of liked how, even though one might see Damien giving Oliver this “vacation from peril” as a tiny chink in his armor, his wife then shows up to make clear, no, this is in fact a ruthless power couple.
Exactly — and she’s the one who wouldn’t have shown him mercy had she had her way.

TVLINE | Apparently not!
She’s like, “No. You should have killed him. What were you doing out there?!”

TVLINE | So, how is Oliver going to use his “few weeks” off?
He’s going to have some Villains of the Week to deal with going forward, and he’s also going to be focused on helping Felicity. I mean, that relationship is key to him, it is key to his character this season, so he’s going to be there for her. He learned his lesson after 410.

TVLINE | Laurel, obviously, not as “The end justifies the means” as Oliver is, as we saw in this episode. Will they continue to butt heads on this topic?
I think so. I mean, she has really come into her own as Black Canary, and we really like that she and Oliver are on a completely new footing this season. She’s become a superhero in her own right on the team, someone with an equal voice and someone with power — and Oliver respects her. She has the ability, just like Dig had in previous seasons, to really put the brakes on things and make him think about his decisions. We really love that dynamic.

TVLINE | What plans do you have for Laurel moving forward?
Oh, we have some big plans for her. She’s going to be key to taking on Darhk in a very kind of new and surprising way. We’re going to see her in a role we haven’t seen her in in a while and it’s really going to put a big crimp in Damien’s plans!

Arrow postmortem: ¡Revelado el destino de Felicity! ¿Qué es lo siguiente?
Por Natalie Abrams 20 Enero, 2015

Good news, Arrow fans: Felicity Smoak is not dead! The bad news?

In the wake of Damien Darhk’s (Neal McDonough) Ghosts shooting up Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) limo in the midseason finale, the Green Arrow’s go-to IT gal is now paralyzed. As much as the fans hope this means she’ll now be going by the codename Oracle — as was initially hinted toward — Felicity is not taking on that famous DC Comics moniker. What’s next, especially after another flash forward revealed that Ollie will be standing over someone’s grave (not Felicity’s!) in four months? EW spoke with executive producer Wendy Mericle to find out:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How is Felicity going to handle now being paralyzed?
WENDY MERICLE: She’s really grappling with the question of getting through this tragic event and figuring out what her life is going to look like afterward. She knows Oliver has a tendency to revert to [his darker ways]. Despite herself, she’s still in shock about what happened, and her focus is going to be mostly, and interestingly, on Oliver and trying to keep him from falling back into this dark hole he’s been in the past.

Even though Felicity is in a wheelchair, she is not Oracle, right?
She is not Oracle. We are going to give her a very fun, cool name in a future episode. It’s going to be fun. We definitely want to give her a codename. It’s been a long time coming, but no, she’s not going to be Oracle.

How are Felicity and Oliver dealing with this new situation now that she’s going to be in a wheelchair?
Oliver is going to be taking the stand of being very optimistic and hopeful — not in the sense that he wants to find a way for her to walk again. He’s optimistic that her power lies in her brain. She can still do everything that she wants to do. This is not the end of anything, it’s more of a new beginning. In future episodes, we’re really going to be seeing Felicity try to maintain that level of optimism, but she’s the one living with it and experiencing it in a direct way. We’re going to be taking her on a little bit of a dark journey of her own as she tries to grapple with the reality of this new situation. It’s a huge game-changer, obviously, for her. How is it going to affect her life and role on the team? Not really her relationship with Oliver, that doesn’t come into question, but certainly how she perceives her future and her role on the team is definitely coming into question.

Is this permanent?
You’ll have to watch to find out.

Will we see other flash forwards that reveal more information about the cemetery scene? And are you basically saying that it’s going to happen in the finale?
We try to leave the timeline a little bit open. We went back and forth about what timeline that was. It’ll be close to the finale. Right now, the plans are not to have it in the finale, but we won’t be doing any more flash forwards going forward. We wanted to revisit that and have a little fun with the audience in terms of noting where Oliver and Felicity are, emotionally and physically — they’re in a limo outside the gravesite. We have no plans, at this point, to do anymore of those.

In that trailer, we also see Thea (Willa Holland) in the hospital, and potentially looking like she was trying to kill herself. What’s going on there?
Thea’s really been dealing with the bloodlust that was induced by the Lazarus Pits. She has been trying to figure out a way to keep that at bay without resorting to killing. We’ve really likened her journey this season to what Oliver was going through in season 1, where she’s trying to figure out where that line is for herself, morally and ethically, as a superhero. After episode 407, when Damien Darhk whammied her, she’s not really had to deal with this in any sort of visceral way. It’s going to come back to haunt her. She thinks she’s cured the bloodlust, and what we’re going to come to find out is the Lazarus Pit has a very lasting affect. It’s not going to leave her that easily. She’s going to be grappling with some shocking new realities about the way it’s manifesting itself in her body and what that means for her going forward.

What can you tease about Roy’s (Colton Haynes) return, which coincides with this storyline about the Calculator (Tom Amandes)?
Roy comes back in a really surprising, new way. Like Oliver, he seems to have fallen back into some old habits.

We’re going to see Nyssa (Katrina Law) “make her move” in an upcoming episode. What’s going on there?
Nyssa has had a long-standing feud with Malcolm (John Barrowman) definitely since episode 403, but it also predates that. She’s going to be basically putting a knife in Malcolm’s back for the rest of the season, and really changing the nature and the context of the League of Assassins as a result.

Shadowspire will also be coming into play in the current timeline. Can you set that up?
We’re really excited about Shadowspire. They’re a very cool organization that we’ve always wanted to explore from the comic books. We’re going to be bringing it in in what we hope is a surprising and cool way through Andy Diggle (Eugene Byrd). It’s really going to be an Andy-Dig (David Ramsey) story and we’re going to see some cool flashbacks about how Andy got involved with them and also how that led Andy to be involved with H.I.V.E.

Shadowspire’s arrival appears to put Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) in pretty grave danger. Is that connected?
It is tied. Lyla is going to, at least temporarily, return to A.R.G.U.S., and we’re going to see some big stakes and some big changes happening in that organization as well.

We saw what appeared to be Hacker Felicity in the trailer, though she’s standing. Could this be Earth-2 Felicity?
I love the idea of Earth-2 Felicity, but we on Arrow try to stay in this time and space. But yes, I definitely think there will be a time and place in the future where we could see Felicity stand.

Any hint as to who is in the grave?
I absolutely cannot. It’s going to be a big shocker.

Whew!

Arrow fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when it was revealed that Felicity isn’t the beloved character buried six feet under in four months’ time. But, Felicity will be going through one massive change following the devastating shooting that left her hospitalized: She won't have the use of her legs.

If the scene in the limo between Felicity and Oliver -- the tension between the two could be cut with a knife -- is any indication of what transpires in Star City during those four months, it’s not looking good for the power couple. Are they still engaged? (Answer: Nope.) More importantly, are they still together?

As executive producer Wendy Mericle tells ETonline, “It will definitely be one of [their big tests] this season but it will pale in comparison in some ways to some of the things we have planned for later.”

Mericle jumped on the phone to answer several of our biggest questions following tonight’s winter return!

We have to start off with the final scene in the cemetery. Now that it’s established that Felicity is not in the grave, why was it important to make that point now?

The real reason is we felt that we raised that question in 4x09 and put it to bed at the top of 4x10, and there really wasn’t much to be done in continuing to ask that question with respect to that character in particular. The other reason is, it was important to us to show that this loss that we’re headed for has an impact not just on Oliver, but on a lot of people. It’s going to be a big shock and a big game-changer, and it’ll have an impact on Felicity as well.

How frequent will the flash-forwards be for the remainder of the season?

I can tell you that we have no immediate flash-forwards, other than that one. We want to use them judiciously because we know how anxious it makes everybody. (Laughs.)

It also looks like, in four months’ time, Felicity’s spinal injury is put to bed. Is that an accurate read or is there more to the scene in the limo?

The most interesting part in the limo to us was where it sets Oliver and Felicity in their relationship. We were less trying to answer the question of where her spinal cord injury lands, as opposed to where she and Oliver are -- especially vis-a-vis Damien and whoever it is that’s responsible for what happens and whoever this loss is.

Oliver and Felicity certainly seemed distant in the limo. Should fans be worried about what may transpire during the four-month span to get them to that point?

I’m not going to pull any punches: We should be worried. Our goal this year was to explore the reality of a relationship between two vigilantes essentially and I don’t think we’d be good at our jobs if we weren’t throwing some significant curveballs their way. That was our goal and we’ll see them go through some big ups and downs, for sure.

Because there’s a timetable on Felicity’s recovery, how do you navigate those waters without diminishing the severity of what she’s going through?

What we want to explore with what Felicity’s going through is be as respectful as we can be with the reality of what it’s like to go through what she went through, to have a spinal cord injury and how do you move forward with your life emotionally, physically, on the team, off the team, and the way we have been exploring it on the page in the writers’ room is through the prism of Oliver and Felicity’s relationship and we want it to play really real. Oliver is very optimistic that we live in a world where The Flash exists, so things are possible, and for Felicity, she’s grounded and practical, and this is her new reality, so that’s really where we’re at. It’s less about the timeline and much more about finding the emotional reality of where they are.

How does this fundamentally change Felicity’s role on Team Arrow?

She’s really grappling with what it means and the fact that she doesn’t have the freedom or the independence that she had. That said, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you don’t need your legs to do what she does. She’s a hacker. She uses her brain -- that’s her superpower. The truth is, as much as the team might still want her there, I think she herself realistically would go through some real fundamental questioning of her role and her new place in the world.

There were moments where Oliver felt guilt over the entire situation. What’s his mindset like moving forward?

At the beginning, he’s bent on revenge, no question about it, but once he’s got a second to think about it and think about it and question his actions in 4x10, he is going to feel guilty. If he had just gone farther and been more brutal and been the killer that he was in the pilot, would this ever have happened? He does feel responsible for what happened and the consequences in [the midseason finale]. He’s definitely questioning a lot.

Is this Oliver and Felicity’s biggest test for their relationship?

It will definitely be one of [their big tests] this season but it will pale in comparison in some ways to some of the things we have planned for later. (Laughs.) In an interesting move, Damien Darhk spared Oliver a few weeks.

What can we expect from those two as their cat-and-mouse game continues?

One of the things we were intrigued by in that moment -- Oliver’s been pursuing Damien the entire episode and then he finally encounters him. This is one of the realities Oliver’s going to walk away from the episode is Damien has magical powers and he is not as easily defeated as Oliver, The Flash, the Green Arrow may have hoped. It’s a combination of two things: It humanizes Damien -- he has a family -- and Oliver chooses in that moment save his family thinking, wrongly, that they’re innocent but [Damien’s wife] Renee is definitely not innocent. By the same token, try as he might, this will raise the stakes in the back half because as much as Oliver has gone after Damien, he hasn’t won and vice versa. They’re both formidable and they’ve proven themselves to be more challenging to defeat than either side thought.

Felicity’s father will eventually come into the picture, so how does his impending entrance complicate matters?

One of the ways we were most intrigued by with that storyline was with respect to her mother. What does Felicity learn about herself through this flash from the past, so to speak. What does her mother know? What does that dynamic look like? She was very young when he left and she doesn’t really remember -- she remembers the abandonment but she doesn’t know who he is aside from what her mother’s told her. There’s going to be a lot of emotional tension and some pretty big questions that she’s going to want to get answered.

In the background of all of this, Oliver still has a mayoral campaign to spearhead and he’ll soon be facing off against a new opponent. What’s ahead in Oliver’s political and public persona?

We see him doubling down on this idea that he can change the city in legitimate ways and in an open, public way. What happens in the [midseason finale] really makes him question his decision. He’s going to continue to pursue it but with the entrance of an opponent and with everything that’s going to be going on with his personal life, there are question marks about what’s going to happen to that campaign. I can’t tell anything specific but it’s going to be complicated. Staying in that race is going to present significant challenges to him, both personally and as the Green Arrow.

There seemed to be a step toward reconciliation between Andy and Diggle at the end of the episode. Is there hope for their relationship to be fully mended?

That is something we’ve been excited to explore and dig into, pun intended, this season between the two of them. For Diggle going forward, he still has a lot of questions – for as much as he comes back and has that moment with Andy, the story is not going to end there. It’s not going to be that easily wrapped up. Andy has a lot more history that Dig is going to find out about in coming episodes, both good and bad, that are going make him question who his brother is. He’s already going through that, he’s had to completely recalibrate who he thought Andy was. When he found out Andy was actually a competitor of H.I.V.E., that alone has turned his world upside down and it won’t be righted for a while.

Lastly, we must talk about Roy’s return to Arrow.

We’re really excited about Roy’s return. Colton [Haynes] is such a great guy to work with and he’s great on the show. The chemistry between him and Willa [Holland] on-screen is amazing, so seeing them having that moment is definitely going to raise questions moving forward. When we see him again, Roy is going to be back to some old habits.

We still may not know who’s in the grave that was teased in “Arrow’s” Season 4 premiere, but after the flashforward we saw in tonight’s midseason return, at least we know who’s not: Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards), who survived a shootout with Damien Darhk’s (Neal McDonough) Ghosts, but may never walk again as a result of her injuries. Still, that bombshell didn’t stop Oliver (Stephen Amell) from reaffirming his commitment to his new fiancee, giving her back the engagement ring that the nurses dared to take off while she was in surgery in a heartfelt hospital scene. (A ring that later seemed conspicuously absent from Felicity’s finger in the episode’s final flashforward.)

The show easily could’ve kept viewers in the dark (no pun intended) about Felicity’s ultimate fate, but executive producer Wendy Mericle told Variety, “we wanted to put some questions to bed and raise the stakes about who it could be. We now know for sure that it’s not her, but that just shifts the focus to a whole host of other characters. We’re lucky to have a big ensemble and it’s still a big question mark, so we got a chance to have our cake and eat it too, and we took it.”

The recently released midseason sizzle reel offered up a few potential alternatives for the identity of the casualty, including Oliver’s sister Thea (Willa Holland) and Diggle’s wife Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson), and although Mericle told Varietythat we’ll have to wait until “the last few episodes of the season” to know for sure, she believes that the ongoing mystery will be “organic to the story,” teasing of the possible victims, “Thea is dealing with this bloodlust which has not gone away, and with the Lazarus Pit, there’s no way it can’t be serious.”

Said teaser also gave a glimpse of Felicity back in her gothic hacker gear from her life before Oliver, and Mericle offered one hint about how this previous iteration of Felicity might make an appearance: “In the wake of this injury, she’s going through a little bit of a dark time of her own; she’s questioning some of her earlier decisions and when she encounters that version of her old self, it’s going to be in a very emotional and grounded context about how she got where she got to with the team and working at Queen Consolidated and, like anybody would after going through a tragic event like that, really looking back at her life choices and doing some hard thinking and reevaluating.”

“Blood Debts” also introduced Damien Darhk’s wife, who was revealed to be in on her husband’s plan to bring “this world to its end” through a plan ominously called Genesis. “We really wanted this season to have a Big Bad that we see from the beginning, and really explore his world. Bringing in this character, his wife, was part of that plan,” Mericle said. “We always knew we wanted to see Damien’s family, and having her be an equally evil part of this plan and have her own drive and her own agenda just felt really cool and dynamic and interesting and something we hadn’t seen on the show before.”

Before we get to the death and potential destruction of this season’s final episodes, we can also expect the return of Colton Haynes’ Roy Harper, who left town after pretending to be the Arrow in order to protect Oliver’s identity.

“The real impetus is that we wanted to see where he’s landed, what has happened to him,” Mericle said. “And when we find him, just like Oliver in 410, we find him slipping back into some old habits, but with some surprising reasons for why he’s doing what he’s doing.”

Comic book fans can also look forward to more of Echo Kellum’s Curtis Holt (aka the future Mr. Terrific) in the back half of the season, per Mericle: “We saw him in action in 406 and I can tell you we’ll probably get a little bit more of that sometime in the next seven episodes or so,” she teased.

Wendy Mericle sobre la sed de venganza de OIiver, el futuro de Felicity y una muerte que cambia el juego

In the latest episode of "Arrow," the bonds between Oliver and his friends began to crack. Still reeling from Felicity being caught in a barrage of bullets, Green Arrow took drastic measures in his effort to take down Damien Darhk once and for all.

Among the decisions Oliver made was to cut the psychopathic Anarky loose in order to do their dirty work. Ultimately, however, he was unable to fully stoop to either villain's level. When Darhk's family was placed in danger due to Anarky's deadly machinations, Green Arrow saved them. Meanwhile, though Felicity survived her emergency surgery, it was revealed that she is now permanently paralyzed.

"Arrow" Executive Producer Wendy Mericle spoke with CBR News about where Team Arrow finds itself in the wake of their all-out assault on Darhk. Oliver reverted back to his old habits, after all, and that's going to put additional pressure on his already strained relationships. Plus, Diggle will continue to learn more about his estranged brother Andy --and he may not like what he discovers), Felicity and Oliver will struggle with her new condition, Darhk's wife wishes Oliver was dead, and the team remains unaware of the death that looms in their future.

CBR News: Without his friends to rein him in, Oliver almost slipped back into his old vigilante ways. What did that relapse say about the character? Is that temptation always there?

Wendy Mericle: With Oliver, one of the ideas that we're coming to this season is it's really hard for him to overcome his past. He had three years in the city dealing with these PTS and solider-of-war issues that we saw him grappling with in those first few seasons. Prior to that, he underwent some pretty serious trauma over the course of five years. I don't think that is ever easily overcome. Those events changed him.

One of the things we're really excited about going forward is [exploring the idea], if you do go through that, and you do have the desire to change like Oliver does, how much can you actually move past those issues? And, is there a part of him that is always going to default to that kind of darkness inside of him? That is always a danger, and will definitely have complications. Not just for him as a superhero going forward, but also for him and his relationships with everybody on his team, especially Felicity.

Diggle physically beat up his captive brother for information... and then he played cards with him. Where does that relationship stand moving forward?

This has been one of the real finds this season. The dynamic between David Ramsey and Eugene Byrd has been so amazing and dimensional and surprising. We're going to be taking this to some cool and exciting places.

The real question on the table for Diggle right now is, yes, he went and played cards with Andy in the episode, but can he ever really trust his brother? Diggle is going to discover in episodes going forward that there's even more to Andy's backstory than he knew. In some ways, Andy is more than the brother Diggle thought he was -- but he's also darker in some things beyond working with H.I.V.E. that calls for Diggle to question his own judgement.

Anarky seems to consider Thea a kindred spirit. How does that resonate with her?

She's initially just confused by it. She's like, "What the…? This guy is a whack job and here you are telling me I'm your favorite person." The interesting thing about Thea is that ultimately she's the by-product of Moira Queen and Malcolm Merlyn. For her not to be a bonafide sociopath would be a sheer miracle of genetics. There's something very dark in her and it does resonate with her. What Anarky does and the lengths that he's gone to -- and the fact that she is ultimately responsible for giving birth to the character he becomes -- I think, despite her best intentions, it is part of her.

Speaking of family, why was it important for Damien Darhk to have one?

When we introduced Damien Darhk at the beginning of the year -- kind of upending our traditional way of introducing the supervillains and waiting until midseason or even later -- we knew we were going to have to keep turning the knife and twisting and changing the story. One of the things we were really excited about doing was giving dimension to the supervillain and in a different way than we had in the past. Before, we understood Malcolm's motives. We understood Slade's motives. Ra's al Ghul is a completely different kettle of fish in terms of why he's doing what he's doing. But, Damien is just a maniacal sociopath, for all intents and purposes. Yet, he's a man who would do anything to protect his family. It both gives him some dimension and humanizes him in some way.

His wife seems far from innocent or helpless.

That's very important, too. Truth be told, we wanted to do a female supervillain, and she's a version of that. She's just as crazy as he is. She has her own drive. She's very Lady Macbeth in the way that she's goading him. We like that she has an agenda of her own. It's the same as Darhk's, but it can diverge in terms of the means to get to the end. She thinks he should have killed Green Arrow.

Another major development is that Felicity is now paralyzed. As the computer whiz, is Felicity being groomed her for an Oracle-type role on the team?

Oracle is completely off the table for a slew of reasons. We were really more interested in exploring the reality of what it's like to go through something like that. How do you deal with it emotionally, and how do you deal with it on a practical day-to-day basis. Specifically for Felicity, how is she going to deal with it in a relationship with Oliver, and also, her role on the team. It was less driven by any agenda with Oracle and much more of, "What are these challenges like?" Hopefully, we are doing some justice and paying a lot of respect towards people that really do live day-to-day with that reality.

Does Felicity's condition further fuel Team Arrow's desire to take Damien down?

It absolutely fuels Oliver's fire to take down Darhk. And, as you saw in [episode] 410, it's what motivates Diggle to go after his brother the way he does. Obviously, Felicity is beloved by everyone on the team. It's definitely going to galvanize them. Not that they needed anything extra to take Damien Darhk down, but this will motivate them in a big way.

The episode ended with another clue as to who is -- or isn't -- dead and buried in the cemetery. What went into the decision to deliver that tease?

A couple of things. It's keeping it alive and, in a lot of ways, reminding the audience that these are the stakes this season. Also, we've been through a big tragedy in 409 with Felicity. We felt it was important to see the evolution of her. This loss that we're going to experience in the future puts her in a dark place as well.

When will those scenes pay off? And, given the buildup, how confident are you that it will be worth the wait?

I'm very confident it will be worth the wait. It will definitely happen towards the end of the season. I can't tell you which episode, but it's going to be a game-changer, for sure.
