After online reactions to Arrow Season 4 were pretty mixed, it has been refreshing to hear that the news about Season 5 of the series sounds very positive. The show’s stunt master James Bamford is directing the first two episodes of the season; there are some new recruits; there’s a villain with a personal vendetta that goes back to Season 1; and the notion of a Mayor Oliver Queen sounds very exciting. There’s even news that Dolph Lundgren will be guest starring, and the flashbacks should be exciting with audiences finally seeing Oliver Queen’s adventures in Russia with Anatoly Knyazev and The Bratva.

Two nights ago at the CBS/CW/Showtime party of the Television Critics Association Press Tour, we spoke with Executive Producer Wendy Mericle for details on what’s to come. Enjoy!

GREENARROWSTV’s CRAIG BYRNE: What excites you the most about Season 5?

WENDY MERICLE: Two things. I think the first is that we are really returning to our roots, answering a lot of the questions we raised in Season 1. We’re going back to some very cool action stuff; a lot more hand-to-hand [combat], having Stephen in the scenes… it’s darker, grittier, fun.

The second thing that I’m super excited about is Russia. We are going back to Russia; we’re going to see the Bratva. I’m just very excited about making that stuff fun and exciting and cool. I think the fans have been waiting a really long time, and our goal is to deliver as much as possible, what they have in their minds on what that should look like.

Anatoly Knyazev was seen in the trailer. He’s back quickly, right?

Anatoly’s back. David Nykl – we’re so lucky to have him. He was such a find. He brings so much humor and light to that role, and that relationship between Anatoly and Oliver is something very special. We’re very excited about how he brings Oliver into the Bratva and what happens to Oliver when he’s there.

We haven’t heard a lot about what is happening with John Diggle this year. Is there anything you can share?

I can tell you that Diggle’s going to be struggling with what he did last season. I think the thing that we’re most excited about is the fact that he’s done something in a way that is darker than anything Oliver ever did. He’s always been Oliver’s conscience; Oliver’s moral compass… and to have him be in a darker place now is a really interesting place to juxtapose the two characters. Obviously, he’ll come back to Star City, but he’s going to back to Star City under some very different circumstances. He’s going to have a much deeper understanding of Oliver’s emotional state when he came back in Season One, than he probably thought he ever might in his lifetime.

Oliver, when he came back to Star City, was in a place that psychologically was very similar to how we find Dig when he comes back this season.

What can you say about the new recruits like Artemis and Wild Dog?

I’m super excited about the casting. Rick Gonzalez and Madison McLaughlin — and David Nykl, too — have been absolutely bananas in the dailies. They’re so exciting. They bring such a new energy and freshness to the show, and we they bring humor. We have the opportnuity to have a whole new group of people, and a new dynamic, and they bring new life into the bunker.

What is coming up for Oliver and Felicity in Season 5?

In the past, we’ve always tried to write what the actors were showing us on camera, and I would say right now, we left Oliver and Felicity in a very ambiguous place at the end of Season 4. I think it’s going to take a while for them to figure out what that relationship is and how much they want it.

And what’s this about a new boyfriend for Felicity?

I can tell you that we love the character. He is very different than anybody else we’ve seen her with. He’s not Ray Palmer; he is not Oliver Queen, but he is a straight shooter good guy that we’re really hoping the audience likes and pulls for.

Speaking of characters that the audience pulls for, is there any truth to the rumors that Colton Haynes has been back already?

We would have Colton back on the show in a heartbeat. As always on the show, we want to bring back the characters that we know and love when there’s a story that can really serve them.

On that note, is there any chance we’ll see the Huntress again this year?

It’s funny you should mention Helena. We are big fans of Helena in the room. Jessica de Gouw is amazing. We had talked about it earlier this season; it didn’t happen, not for any reason of actor availability; we realized quickly it was not the right story. But because we are answering to a lot of Season 1 storylines, we’d [like to] bring her back and see her again. We’re fans.

James Bamford is directing the first two episodes of Season 5. You’ve talked about the action; can you talk about what he brings to the table as a director?

James has been on the show from the beginning. He is absolutely committed. Loves the show, loves the characters, and I think having seen it in Season One and seeing the growth and our attempts to expand and grow and seeing what else we can do action-wise on the show, he has now arrived at a very specific vision that hearkens back to Season One but also honors where we are in terms of [the show’s] evolution. He gets it. I think it’s his passion for the show and his passion for constantly pushing the envelope that is going to make Season Five really exciting.

How early will we get any hints of Flashpoint affecting Arrow?

I will say that you’ll feel it early in the season.

Hmmm.

Chad L. Coleman sobre su nuevo villano de "Arrow": 'Es como Jay Z, el Dr. Dre, y Suge Knight

The producers behind The CW’s Arrow have promised the series will be getting back to basics in Season 5, and one big change is the season’s new baddie: the imposing gangster Tobias Church.

So, we caught up with the man bringing him to life — The Walking Dead alum Chad L. Coleman — to talk about what it’s like to jump from the zombie apocalypse to the mean streets of Star City. When the casting sides first hit, Coleman’s character was described as a “ruthless crime lord” in the same vein as Idris Elba’s Wire drug kingpin Stringer Bell. The (seemingly) new gangster creation will be trying to fill the power vacuum left behind by Damien Darhk and H.I.V.E.

Check out our chat with Coleman below, where he talks about everything from who would win in a fight (Stephen Amell better watch out) and the interesting real-life characters he’s tapping for inspiration:

The obvious question: What can you tell us about Tobias Church, your new recurring character on Arrow?

Coleman: Tobias Church is a badass who likes to throw his intelligence and sarcasm around. Depending on your IQ and ability to negotiate on that playground will decide your fate, which involves brass knuckles! (laughs)

This seems to be an original creation for the TV series, so what types of characters (comic-based or otherwise) are you looking to for inspiration?

Coleman: He wants to be King of the Underworld and take out Arrow. He's on a mission. I told producers he's like Jay Z, Dr. Dre, and Suge Knight all rolled into one!

Your character has been described as an imposing gangster looking to consolidate power, so how do you think he'll fit into the dynamic on Arrow?

Coleman: He’s a great addition to the show because he brings that street edge that we all know and love.

What specifically attracted you to the role? Are you looking forward to (seemingly) playing a straight-up villain?

Coleman: Of course! The opportunity to play a villain on a well-established series is exciting and definitely something that grabbed my attention. Not only that, but the character is something you've never seen before. Think Kevin Spacey kind of smartass, who kicks ass!

You've obviously already worked on one comic book show, The Walking Dead, but what's it like getting prepped to walk into something a whole lot more (for lack of a better term) comic book-y in the DC superhero universe?

Coleman: This world is so juicy because of the larger than life nature of it, so Tobias Church is a force to be reckoned with! But you can't beat Jack Nicholson as the “Joker" in Batman!

Mano-a-mano, who wins in a throwdown? Tobias Church or the Green Arrow?

Coleman: Stay tuned people! Dat Green Boy bouta feel dat "Brass Asswhupper." (laughs)

Coleman will make his Arrow debut in the Season 5 premiere, set for Wednesday, Oct. 5.

- Dónde está el 'Team Arrow' cuando empiece la Season 5 (IGN):
Dónde está el 'Team Arrow' cuando empiece la Season 5
Por Terri Schwartz 16 Agosto 2016

Arrow: Season 5 is going to be exploring the theme of legacy and what happens when the past comes back to haunt you. For Oliver Queen, that means wanting to have a solid team of heroes ready to protect Star City, especially now that he's mayor and Team Arrow as we know it has disbanded.

"[Season 5] deals with legacy, it deals with the past, and the dramatic irony, the dramatic tension, that we get from it is Oliver's always been a guy -- admittedly, not the most self aware dude ever -- but he's always been someone who is trying to move forward. He's always trying to evolve," executive producer Marc Guggenheim told IGN. "The challenge for Oliver this year is how do you evolve and move forward when the past keeps grabbing at you, trying to pull you back."

Part of that is going to be striking a balance between his former team members and the new heroes who will be joining Team Arrow. Below, Guggenheim and executive producer Wendy Mericle offer teases of what to expect for Arrow's main characters.

Oliver Queen

Oliver Queen understands that he can't protect Star City on his own, and in Season 5 he's assembling a new Team Arrow to work alongside him. He, Felicity and Curtis will bring on newcomers like Evelyn Sharp and Wild Dog, who will then face off against an array of villains popping up in the wake of Damien Darhk's death.

"He's going to have a team, so we have talked about having a team of villains, and how would Oliver get his new guys who are really rough around the edges -- totally wet around the ears, not ready for this -- how does he get them ready to take on really trained [enemies]?" said Mericle. "He's very cognizant of the fact that Laurel died in this line of work and he doesn't want that for them."

Guggenheim promised an Oliver who is "trying to be an optimistic" and "trying to be bright" -- though of course "circumstances just keep trying to pull him back into the darkness."

Felicity Smoak

Felicity is still going to be by Oliver's side when Season 5 begins, but as an ally and a friend; viewers won't have to see any residual baggage from their breakup. "We've talked a lot about how to deal with that," said Guggenheim. "We always play the true five month gap between the season finale and season premiere. And every time we've talked about Oliver and Felicity should talk about their feelings, we realized, wow, that feels really wrong because they've had five months to talk about their feelings. Any mature couple, they've had that conversation."

Guggenheim likens their relationship to being closer to where it was in Season 1, where "Felicity was Oliver's sort of light and voice of reason, and voice of positivity, and she's still trying to be that," while Oliver is "again torn between that aspiration and his own nature and his past." He did tease that episode 5 is "probably the most Olicity-centric episode we will have done in Season 5 so far."

"There's a very Olicity-heavy scene in [episode] 5. They're adults. At the same time, it feels a little like Season 1," Guggenheim said. "I honestly don't know how many shows have done this where you've gotten two characters engage, broke them up, but still kept them together on the show as partners."

John Diggle

Just because Diggle headed off to the army doesn't mean he's going to be out of the show. "With Diggle, he'll be in the army. We'll have storylines with him. Just because he's gone doesn't mean [Team Arrow] don't want him back, or that they're not trying," teased Mericle. "There's definitely contact, and he's going to have his own story in the army where he realizes maybe this isn't the place. Maybe he's going to have to still keep looking for these answers about how to get his sense of mortality back."

Thea Queen

Expect Thea to follow her older brother into the mayor's office. "She's going to be working as Oliver's chief of staff -- the youngest, least experienced, no college degree staff in the history of Star City," Mericle said with a laugh. This will tie back to the season's theme of legacy, as Thea proves to have a lot of her mother's political prowess in her.

"She's really good at it. And the fun part with her is that she's Moira's daughter, and Malcom's daughter, and she's trying to be normal," said Mericle. "Can she ever really be normal? It's a good question. With that DNA? Yeah, who knows? She might be a little -- maybe, a little House of Cards, a little Moira-esque action going on. It might be really fun."

Curtis Holt

Beyond helping Oliver and Felicity assemble a team of costumed heroes to protect the streets of Star City, Curtis is going to become one himself: Mr. Terrific.

"The show has always had these weird moments of... is this going to work? And if it doesn't work, it's really a disaster. I think Curtis in costume as Mister Terrific is one of those moments," said Guggenheim. "But what I think is so great about Echo [Kellum] is he plays it correctly as it's Curtis. He doesn't deepen his voice and suddenly become this badass. He's still true to his character. It doesn't feel like this ridiculous reach."

Quentin Lance

The shadow of Laurel Lance's death is going to weigh heavy over her father in Season 5. "Quentin is going to break your heart this year," teased Mericle. "He's still dealing with Laurel and he's going to play a role in the mayor's office, but he's probably at his -- he's in a dark place."

When Arrow returns for Season 5 on The CW on October 5th, Team Arrow will still be reeling from the emotional impact of the events from last season. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) now has to balance being the Green Arrow with being the mayor of Star City, while Diggle (David Ramsey) is back in the military and Thea (Willa Holland) is adamant about leaving Speedy behind. To make everything even more challenging, Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) is the only one left to help Oliver, as he trains a new crop of masked heroes who are looking to step up and defend the city.

While at The CW portion of the TCA Summer Press Tour, executive producer/writer Wendy Mericle sat down with Collider for this exclusive interview about the season’s theme of legacy, Team Arrow being scattered, who’s having the hardest time coming to terms with everything that’s happened, the new team of vigilantes, the evolution of Mr. Terrific, Diggle’s struggle, Olicity, and where the threats are coming from this season. Be aware that there are some spoilers.

Collider: What can you say about the story you’re going to be telling in Season 5?

WENDY MERICLE: Well, the theme of the season is legacy, and for everybody, across the board, but especially Oliver. He’s looking back at, “Okay, I’ve been here for four years. I’ve been trying to fix the city. Have I succeeded, or have I not?” And now, he’s working as the mayor and still working as a vigilante, which are two full-time jobs. He’s gotta figure out what’s really going to be his legacy and how he’s going to honor what he set out to do, which is right his father’s wrongs. And then, Thea will be doing the same thing from her position in the mayor’s office, and also grappling, personally, with if she’s like her mother, at the end of the day, and whether she’s more Merlyn or more Queen. Felicity will be dealing with the fall-out of Havenrock. She ultimately was responsible for the deaths of 20,000 people last year. We went big. A nuclear bomb went off. So, she’s dealing with that. And Diggle killed his brother. How do you come back from that and regain your moral center? He understands that he had to do what he did, but it doesn’t make it any easier that, at some point, you’ll have to tell your own child, “Hey, I kind of killed your uncle. Sorry.” It’s a little dark.

Who will have the hardest time, trying to come to terms with everything?

MERICLE: That’s a great question. I think emotionally it will be hardest on Felicity. Dig is a soldier. He’s seen some things in his time. Oliver has been a bad-ass for a long time, cracking some necks. Felicity, though, was an I.T. girl four years ago. She never thought she’d drop a bomb on a bunch of innocent people. It’s a new reality for her. We really wanted to play, what would happen if it was your or me, in that situation? How would we feel? We’re trying to honor that. That’s a challenge for her, this year.

Aside from being Green Arrow and the mayor of Star City, Oliver is also going to be training some new vigilantes when he doesn’t particularly have a lot of patience for others.

MERICLE: Come on, he’s such a people person!

How will that work?

MERICLE: It works exactly like you’d think it would. He does not care for them and he’s hard on them. For as much fun as it is to have Oliver basically just run roughshod over these very wide-eyed, wet-behind-the-ears, wannabe vigilantes, the truth of it is that he’s really informed by what happened in Season 4. Laurel died, and no one is taking that lightly. It’s informing the entire season. He doesn’t want them to die. He wants to make sure they know the gravity of the situation they’re going into.

Why these vigilantes?

MERICLE: Felicity has been tracking all of the new vigilantes in town. Evelyn Sharp, who will be Artemis, is somebody that Oliver is pretty confident that he can mold. He succeeded in turning her in Episode 419, so he’s like, “Okay, maybe her. But, this other guy? This Wild Dog guy? No idea what this guy is going on about!” Wild Dog is the one who gives him the most trouble, early in the season, and he’s also the guy who has his own dark past and is going to be dealing with his own legacy. And then, Ragman has a very spiritual identity and he comes from a place of really honoring his Jewish religion. He’s going to present some moral challenges to Oliver. He’s like a parent to these guys. They’re going to drive him crazy.

One of my colleagues who knows far more about comic books than I do wants to know if you’re modeling this group of vigilantes after The Outsiders?

MERICLE: In terms of an actual model of a team, we haven’t talked about that a lot. I think what we wanted to do was really look at it from the specific point of view of Oliver, Felicity and Dig. It’s tough to find characters in any other setting that would have that unique blend of perspectives. These are the comic book characters that spoke to us the most, and we felt would represent the biggest challenges to our guys. It’s going to be a ride.

Curtis Holt seems to want to get involved, but doesn’t have any idea what that really means. Will he get way more than he bargained for?

MERICLE: Oh, yeah! He’s definitely bitten off a lot more than he can chew. The fun part about Curtis is that he really wants to do it, but in many ways, he’s the least equipped to do it, especially out in the field. He’s a very smart guy, but throwing punches is not his forte. You’ll be seeing the evolution of Mr. Terrific, and him dealing with his husband. His husband will have to come to terms with the fact that Curtis is out there fighting crime. I’m not sure Paul is going to be too excited about that.

Are you going to follow the Mr. Terrific that we know from the comics, or will there be a departure there?

MERICLE: In some ways. I would say we’ll definitely evolve the comic book characters this season, and he’ll be the closest to the original storyline. Canon, to us, is a starting part. In the show’s DNA, at its inception, is that it’s not the Green Arrow your father knew. It was very much inspired by Christopher Nolan movies and The Dark Knight, and they’ve been very open about that, from the beginning. It will always be inspired by the canon, but it won’t necessarily go as far as some comic book fans might want it to.

How does Diggle’s family feel about how he’s dealing with things?

MERICLE: Dig is in an interesting place. Coming out of last year, he feels this tremendous guilt about murdering his brother. He’s gone back to what he knows, which is the military, and he’s going to discover that he’s not going to find what he’s looking for there. He’s going to find it when he comes back to the team. But when he comes back to the team, it’s a whole other team. He’s got this other element to deal with, which is these punk kids that are coming in there to take his spot. He’s not going to be on board with that. He’s going to go through some complicated stuff. He’s got an interesting arc this season. I think he’s going to, in a lot of ways, be very similar to where Oliver was in Season 1. That will be fun to play with. We love him. His family is great, and they’re going to be a big part of the season, for sure. We’re going to see Lyla. We love Lyla.

You have a very devoted Olicity fan base who want to see Oliver and Felicity together. Do you think about that, moving forward?

MERICLE: Oh, yeah! At some point, we do think about it, and then you have to stop thinking about it. The funny thing about Felicity and Oliver is that it’s not in the comic books. Like you, I don’t come for a comic book background, and I feel like I speak for those members of the audience, who are a lot, that don’t. The thing about having Emily [Bett Rickards] on the show is that it was clear Emily and Stephen [Amell] had chemistry, and we wrote to that. Right now, they’re in an ambiguous place and we’re going to see where that goes. We’re going to lean into wherever these actors and characters take us, and that’s the fun of it. That’s why you can’t always please everyone. You’re in charge of figuring out what’s best for the show, creatively. Sometimes that isn’t what the Olicity fans or the Laurel fans want. Sorry guys!

How do Felicity and Oliver feel about each other moving on?

MERICLE: You’re going to see a lot of both of them reacting to this decision they made. Between seasons, they’ve definitely had a conversation about, “We’re going to work in the bunker. It’s going to be great.” They didn’t really get to that question of, are we going to date? So, when all that starts to come out, they’re going to have to make decisions. If they’re not going to be together, what are they going to do? They’re not going to be single for their own lives. They’ll have to see what happens. They’re going to have some big feelings. There might be some toes that get stepped on, for sure.

What can you say about where the threats are coming from, this season?

MERICLE: We’re excited, this year we’ve gone back to the real criminal underworld of Star City. We’ll be dealing a lot with the criminal underworld and the kind of gangs and mobs that are there. We’ll see Bratva, we’ll see Triad, we’ll see the Los Halcones, and we’ll see some of the Bertinelli family, as well. You won’t necessarily see some of the same faces, but you’ll see some of those same groups from earlier on. It’s much more of a gritty crime threat to the city. Damien Darhk didn’t succeed and we’ve had a lot of terrorist attacks there, and we were really interested in seeing what the real world fall-out of that would be. Crime is on the rise, and these vigilantes are on the rise. They’re as much a problem as they are a help, and how is Oliver going to deal with that?

It sounds like a very different kind of threat than you’ve dealt with before.

MERICLE: It is.

What does that give the show that it hasn’t had before?

MERICLE: It’s just different villains of the week. It’s something else for the team to focus on. For us, it’s a little more real. If you look at where the world is right now, there is this focus on what’s happening in our cities and what’s happening with violence in the streets. We’re able to reflect that back, in some way, and have dialogues about it in the writers room, and have our characters talk about it, too. It’s not magic. It’s not metas. It feels very much of the world we set out to explore, in Season 1.

Arrow returns for Season 5 on The CW on October 5th.

When Arrow moves to Russia for its Season 5 flashbacks, it will make last year’s magical island adventures look like a picnic by comparison.

In exploring Oliver’s history with the infamous Bratva crime syndicate, “We really wanted to go gritty, dark, and make it feel very real,” showrunner Wendy Mericle tells TVLine.

“We’re dealing with the Bratva, and the Bratva is, as we all know, a pretty interesting and messed-up institution. I might get shot for saying that, but hey!” she adds with a laugh.

In order to make sure that the upcoming episodes stay true to that unflinching world, the creative team did their research. “Everyone on staff watched [the 2007 film] Eastern Promises,” Mericle says. “I watched documentaries about Bratva and how they operate in Russian prisons.”

But it’s not just crime bosses Oliver has to fear as he tries to keep his promise to ill-fated island pal Taiana, to tell her parents what happened to her and brother Vlad. A new Big Bad, played by Rocky IV opponent Dolph Lundgren, also awaits him in the flashbacks.

“[Dolph’s character] is a government strongman,” Mericle previews. “He is scary and formidable — and he had a role in some stuff with Taiana’s family last season. He’s a bit of a badass.” Ya think?

Arrow returns Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 8/7c on The CW, where it now leads into the freshman drama Frequency.

- La Season 5 estará libre de magia y mirará de nuevo a sus raíces (IGN):
La Season 5 estará libre de magia y mirará de nuevo a sus raíces
Por Terri Schwartz 23 Agosto 2016

The magic-filled Arrow: Season 4 was an experiment that won't be repeated in Season 5.

Executive producer Wendy Mericle told IGN the writing staff is going back to basics with the upcoming season and is developing a story and villain grounded in the real world.

"The show was always meant to be a gritty crime drama at its heart. And then Flash came along, and oh my gosh, we have meta powers. And then Damien was, well, we haven't done magic on the show, let's try to do that," she said. "I think for Season 5, just because it is an answer to Season 1, and we are sort of closing this chapter out, we did want to go back to our roots and figure out what is specific to this show. What is our universe? Go back to, 'What is Arrow?'"

The intention is to let the other shows' comic book DNA "swirl around" in the Arrowverse, but still focus on what makes Arrow Arrow within the season. Because of that, Big Bad Prometheus will be step away from Damien Darhk; Mericle described the character as "very grounded." Expect to meet Prometheus in the Season 5 premiere.

"[He's] not going to have magic, no powers," Mericle said. "He has a very personal grudge and axe to grind with Oliver and he's going to come at him in a really interesting, sociopathic kind of way."

Even though Arrow will be focusing on staying true to its own DNA, expect to see some ripple effects of the other CW DC shows on this one. When The Flash: Season 3 kicks off with Flashpoint, it will have an impact on Arrow.

"Flashpoint provides an interesting jumping off point for all the shows this year, in that we have this reset button available to us if we want it," Mericle said. "We've landed on a few things, but the door is open. That's the fun part. You can play with it in whatever way, shape, or form you want to. I think it will be small in some ways, and big in others."

There also is a big Supergirl/The Flash/Arrow/DC's Legends of Tomorrow crossover that coincides with Arrow's 100th episode. As of what we know so far, this will be the first opportunity for Oliver Queen and Kara Danvers -- aka Supergirl -- to come face-to-face. The Arrowverse's writers are still figuring out how exactly all the different pieces of the crossovers will work, but Mericle is looking forward to having Oliver meet the much bubblier Kara to bring "a different perspective to our show." "It's just a good break," she said.

That being said, Arrow will likely dial back on crossing over with too many of the other shows and will focus more on making a solid season. "I do think that because it's about Oliver this year, you'll feel that more," said Mericle. "That's more of our focus, I think, than trying to figure out where they would be best served on the other shows."
