Tonight on Arrow, Seth Gabel brings high anxiety to Starling City as the CW drama’s version of the DC Comics baddie Count Vertigo — here envisioned as a psychotic drug-pusher whose primo product is called Vertigo. Gabel spoke with TVLine about how a Dark Knight nemesis informed his take on the first supervillain of Oliver Queen’s own making, and what he enjoyed most about his recent Fringe encore.

TVLINE | Under what circumstances do we first meet The Count?
When you first meet him, he is in his element, in the street, and he’s running his business, which he does so viciously, aggressively and sadistically.

TVLINE | Every villain has something he believes in. What is his rationale for doing what he does?
It’s pretty simple – he just loves money and power. He also loves the suffering of others, and that combination is a pretty deadly one.

TVLINE | [Exec producer] Andrew Kreisberg has said that the Count is the first supervillain of Oliver’s own making. What did he mean by that?
Well, Oliver ends up exacerbating the power that the Count has initiallyVertigoand increasing the danger that he faces with the Count being his adversary. The Count was doing his own thing on the street, having a good time. And then Oliver comes along and makes things personal [because of Thea], and that changes things. There are… repercussions.

TVLINE | Stephen Amell told me that Arrow becomes “impaired” in some way during this episode — and at a critical moment.
Yeah, [DC Comics' Count Vertigo] had some tricks up his sleeve, and this character has something similar to that. It ends up affecting the Arrow in such a way that he’s not 100 percent.

TVLINE | What else does this guy have in his arsenal? Is he protected by a fleet of muscle-bound goons?
It’s obligatory that you have muscle-bound goons! [Laughs] Part of being a supervillain is you need a band of thugs protecting you, and the Count definitely has that. But he also has a lot of other things to play with…. You can only expect the unexpected from him.

TVLINE | Who would you say informed your performance? In one clip I saw, there seemed to be a trace of Heath Ledger’s Joker….
The character was initially pitched to me as being a lot like Heath Ledger’s Joker [in The Dark Knight], which was initially incredibly intimidating for me. And I didn’t want to be redundant. So while the character is definitely inspired by what he did, I tried to find my own version of that level of freedom, that intimate relationship to violence and psychosis.

TVLINE | Turning to Fringe: I take it you totally knew you were returning when we met up last month in Vancouver.
Yeah – they forced me to lie! They threaten FRINGE_512_2you with litigation and stuff, and you can’t tell the truth to anyone!

TVLINE | How did you feel when you got that call to come back for the big finish?
It was an honor. I enjoyed every episode that I spent on that show, and to have them ask me back for the finale really felt like a validation of some kind. I felt honored that the Lincoln Lee character was a part of the legacy that was that show, and that he got a chance to complete his journey emotionally. And I was glad the audience got to enjoy the fact that he was married to Olivia on the Other Side, that he had a family and was doing really well. It was a win for me to get to experience that as an actor playing the character; hopefully it was a win for the audience to see that.

TVLINE | I liked the brief indication that he felt some remorse, or guilt, that he’d been Over There the whole time that our side was getting run roughshod by the Observers.
Yeah, there was a little bit of doubt – “Did I make the right choice? ” — because Lincoln sees that Olivia is suffering. He wonders, “Was I meant to stay in my own universe? Is it wrong that I’m over here enjoying myself and having a family when I could have been over there helping her and Peter? Maybe if I was over there, their child wouldn’t have died?” So there is a level of guilt. But at the end of the day, she gives him her blessing, saying that things seem like they’re supposed to be the way they are.

TVLINE | Both Lincoln and Olivia aged nicely – and there was that cute line, “Stop checking out my young ass.”
Yeah. [Laughs] That was really fun. I was glad we got to play that, and show that even though they were older, they still had some fire between them!

ARROW’s Oliver has faced his fair share of villains, but with his sister, Thea, getting wrapped up in the mayhem of a new street drug, Vertigo — which caused her car crash at the end of the last episode — Mr. Queen is out to make someone pay. And if Oliver’s angry, that doesn’t bode too well for The Count, the man responsible for this dangerous drug.

I spoke with ARROW newbie Seth Gabel — whom television viewers may remember from his time as Lincoln on Fox’s FRINGE or Jeremy Darling on ABC’s DIRTY SEXY MONEY — about playing The Count (a role he’s previously called “the most fun I’ve ever had”), getting to tap into his darker side, on-screen fighting, what viewers can expect from “Vertigo,” and more…

I have to say, it’s been fun seeing non-stop ads of your ARROW guest spot. You seem to be playing quite the deranged character!
Seth Gabel: They put some nice sound effects on there, too, which I was pleased about.

It’s been a couple of months since the news broke that you were cast on the show. What reactions have you been getting from people as it gets closer and closer to air?
SG: I was very happy, because I went to ADR a few weeks ago for ARROW and I saw Andrew Kreisberg there, the creator [of ARROW], who I hadn’t seen since I had done the work. And it was really interesting when I went there, because in TV you have to work so quickly, it’s difficult to get on the same page as to what you’re going to do with the character. And a lot of times you find yourself shooting right away [after you're cast].

What was great was Wendy [Mericle], the director, she helped me and gave me the permission to go fully out there with the character and do some takes with it that way, and also sometimes bring it back [in other takes], and make it a little more grounded in reality, because I really wanted to make sure I nailed the tone for the show. Because it’s a comic book world, but it’s also very believable.

And what was great was when I saw the clips I saw during ADR and spoke to Andrew, they seemed really happy with all of it. Especially with the blend we ended up shooting, because then we were able to put that together in the editing room and craft the levels of which The Count character gets bigger or smaller or more intense or more psychotic as the episode progresses.

Oh, that’s very cool. What can you tease about how they decided to go with your first scene? Were you a bit quieter, or did you come in with guns figuratively blazing?
SG: You see The Count, initially, in his psychotic element; in his sadistic element. You see he’s a person not to be messed with, and that’s firmly established, so when Oliver decides to mess with him, it’s definitely a clash of titans on some level.

Uh oh. What can you share about their first meeting?
SG: Our first meeting is not what you’d expect, because both characters are clever, so they’re not going to go head-to-head right away. I think it’s pretty intriguing how it all pans out…It’s possible there are police officers involved. [Laughs]

Are one of you two responsible for bringing the cops in to try and manipulate the other?
SG: Anything is possible. [Laughs]

Fair enough! What can you share about the drug itself?
SG: The Count is the purveyor of this drug, he’s the creator of this drug and he’s extremely proud of his creation, so he’s willing to defend whatever it takes to keep it on the street, to keep the money flowing in and the power increasing. And so he’s not to be messed with.

Does he have to do anything special to get it made?
SG: I think you’ll find out what it took to create it. You just have to tune in to find out.

Interesting. Are most of your scenes going toe-to-toe with Stephen Amell’s Oliver, or are you sharing scenes with anyone else?
SG: There are a couple of other people, but there’s a lot of toe-to-toe action.

Do you get to physically fight Stephen?
SG: I get to physically fight, and Stephen was around. And…I think that’s all I can say. [Laughs]

Was that at all intimidating? The show has been showing off Stephen’s fighting a lot on the series, and this is a new cast and crew for you…
SG: What was great about coming in to this show was I had gone up to Vancouver where ARROW and FRINGE shoot and I was doing both. What was great was I had worked with the stunt coordinator and a lot of the stunt team on FRINGE. And so I was really comfortable with that team. So going in, even though, yes, as a guest star, you are intimidated by the amount of experience other actors have on set doing the thing they’re doing, I felt very comfortable with that team. And Stephen was incredibly welcoming and even though his character is intimidating — and he can be physically intimidating — he was really generous in his level of support of me being able to do the things that would make the scene as great as possible. So I felt really comfortable there and had a great time with the stunt team and I feel like we got pretty good stuff.

Very good to hear. Was there anything you watched to prep for the role?
SG: Well, I worked pretty intuitively. I had gone on Wikipedia and had done some research online to see what the original character of Count Vertigo was like in the comic books. But [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and Andrew had kind of initially pitched the character to me as being a version of Heath Ledger’s Joker [from THE DARK KNIGHT]. And so, my main focus was to find what felt true to me and what wouldn’t be redundant of the Joker character in terms of having a real brazen relationship to violence and psychosis and megalomania and physical freedom. I think The Count ends up being a version of my intuitive crazy-violent side on some level.

Was there any scene in particular you enjoyed filming?
SG: I enjoyed all of the scenes. The first one was really fun; the first one you’ll see in the episode. Because it is The Count in his element, fully confident in his abilities and the havoc he could wreak on any individual and the suffering he could cause. And he just relishes it. So that was really fun to play.

Having permission to be so sadistically dark is really interesting when you have a wife and two kids at home and you’re a generally responsible person.

It’s a nice, safe outlet to do those things.
SG: Yeah. I’m always surprised by the fact that I can get paid as an actor, because it just feels like you get to have these emotional catharsis all the time. It’s just unlike any other job. It’s pretty incredible you get to do the things you do and there’s no consequence.

A good point. Has anything been firmed up about whether you’ll return to ARROW beyond this one episode?
SG: It’s possible those talks continued. And it’s possible The Count will be back. You just have to tune in to find out.

You’re a good tease. Is there anything else you want to tease about your ARROW arc?
SG: I just hope people enjoy it! I made it my goal to take risks and be as out there as possible and do so with 100% conviction. I definitely feel good about the conviction part, so I hope people enjoy it.

- Arrow Scoop: ¿Será Oliver capaz de derrotar a The Count? (TVGuide):
Arrow Scoop: ¿Será Oliver capaz de derrotar a The Count?
Por Natalie Abrams 29 Enero, 2013 09:55 PM ET

Following a run-in with the Dark Archer, Arrow's titular hero may once again meet his match in the form of The Count (Seth Gabel), a maniacal villain whose drug has hit the streets of Starling City.

Like all fantastical DC Comics characters who have made their way to The CW series, The Count will be more grounded than in the comics. In particular, his powers will be manifested through a drug called Vertigo — which is some strong stuff considering Thea (Willa Holland) crashed her car while on it.

"He don't have any super powers per se, but I think he still qualifies as a super villain because he is psychotic," Gabel tells TVGuide.com of his version of The Count, which was inspired by Batman's nemesis The Joker. "[Executive producers] Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg had initially pitched the character as a Joker type, which I was intimidated by because I didn't want to live up to anything that Heath Ledger had done. But at the same time, I was really excited to come up with my own version of that intensity and intimacy with violence.

"I really want to make The Count worthy as being Arrow's adversary," Gabel continues, noting he spent a lot of time figuring out how his psychotic character would hold a gun. "Ultimately, I found that being super casual with it and super relaxed about it — like I might drop the gun at any moment or blow someone's head off at any moment — was the coolest way to do it. The Count has a physical presence that can rival anyone."

After Thea was arrested for crashing her car while under the influence last week, Oliver (Stephen Amell) will go on a manhunt to find out who is responsible. "For Oliver, in this instance, it's personal because it involves Thea," Amell says. "Uncovering this guy and sending the police towards The Count is a way that Oliver can get Thea off the hook. We see a lot more personal responsibility, angst and determination from Oliver than maybe we see when he's just pursuing someone on the list."

The Count, however, will take pride in the pain he's caused Oliver. "Anything that gets to someone and takes their power down a notch and increases his power is a good thing," Gabel says. "He sadistically feeds off of the suffering of others and the acquiring of wealth and power in his own right."

Because of that, Oliver may go too far in his quest for vengeance, which may lead to a return visit from The Count in the future. "There's something that the Arrow does that will possibly make things much worse in the long run," Gabel says. Adds Amell: "He is formidable, and I don't think, regardless of what we see Wednesday, that we've seen the last of The Count."

The roster of villains on the CW’s “Arrow” series continues to grow, and fans of the “Green Arrow” comic book will definitely recognize the bad guy introduced in this week’s episode, “Vertigo.”

Count Vertigo has been part of the Green Arrow mythology since 1978, but the TV version of the character, played by Seth Gabel, is a little more down to earth — less super-powered bad guy and more psychotic drug dealer.

Gabel should be well-known to genre fans, as he recently completed a multi-season run on Fox’s “Fringe.”

He recently talked to Hero Complex about his appearance on “Arrow” and the conclusion of “Fringe.” (Beware, some mild spoilers about “Fringe” lie ahead).

HC: John Barrowman [who plays the villainous Merlyn on the series] revealed he has a copy of the DC Universe Encyclopedia that he refers to constantly. Do you do the same kind of research?

SG: I didn’t have time. I found out about the role just a few days before we were going to shoot it. There wasn’t time to delve deep into the comic book character, so I went on Wikipedia. When I got the script, it immediately became apparent that they were making an adaptation of the original Count Vertigo character and from that it was free for me to interpret what was originally intended and kind of create something new that fit into the world of “Arrow” and fit into the world of what void there was for a supervillain to come and fill on that show.

HC: Based on the preview of the episode, “Vertigo,” it seems like you’re playing the Count as pretty crazy.

SG: Yeah, the character was initially conceived by Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg as being a Joker-type for the series. I didn’t want to copy anything that Heath Ledger had brilliantly done, but at the same time I was very much inspired by his intense relationship to the violence and that sense of sadism and that physical presence. This was my own version of that I could express on the show. I dove into that headfirst and took big risks I’ve never taken before as an actor.

HC: Any other performances or people you looked to?

SG: I absorb everything, so there was no one thing I looked to. I watch as many movies and TV shows as possible and I kind of absorb different things from everything that I see. What has come out in the Vertigo character is a version of my own inner trickster and someone who’s willing to be megalomaniacal and dangerous. As a parent of two kids and a responsible father and husband, it’s incredibly cathartic to be that character on set and do dangerous things without real consequences.

HC: When you play a character like that are you exhausted or energized at the end of the day?

SG: I think you feel exhilarated because you get to do things that are taboo, things that in life you’re never allowed to do and do them in a safe environment that you know no one is getting hurt. You have no guilt at the end of the day. It was actually difficult for me to go to bed at night after filming on that show because what I had done on that show was so fun and outside the box from anything I had experienced before.

HC: Is this the first time you’ve played a character the audience was already familiar with?

SG: I think so. There’s definitely a sense of intimidation knowing there are people out there who know a lot more details than you do about the part you’re going to be playing. So that was a big factor in giving myself permission to loosely adapt what was already established for the character and fully immerse myself as much as possible in what I could find. Ultimately this was going to be an adaptation based on what the writers had created for this show now. What we did was definitely inspired by the original character but at the same time, this was free to explore territory that hadn’t been explored before.

HC: Are you a science fiction or comic book guy?

SG: Definitely. I’m a big sci-fi person. Comic books I wasn’t able to get into as a kid. My mom wasn’t very supportive of it. But the sci-fi world I love. Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite sci-fi writer. I know he writes a lot of satire, but I consider him one of the greatest sci-fi writers.

HC: How physical is the character?

SG: What’s great about going into the show is that the stunt team is the same stunt team I’d worked with on “Fringe,” so I felt very comfortable. Usually when you’re a guest on a show, you’re somewhat intimidated by the regulars on the show, who have a lot more experience working with the same people on set. I know Stephen [Amell] has a lot of combat experience. At first I was intimidated by his ability to fully do all the things they were doing on set. But they were all really supportive, so I was able to fully go for it, in terms of the fights. Ultimately, I think it turned out great.

Betrayal Episode 13Stephen Amell and his castmates have a lot to say — and yet little to reveal — about Arrow‘s 13th episode, titled “Betrayal” and airing tonight at 8/7c on The CW.

On the surface, the episode guest-stars David Anders (Alias, Once Upon a Time) as Cyrus Vanch, a nefarious criminal resigned to reclaim his position atop the underworld after release from prison. That agenda thusly lands Starling City’s hooded vigilante in his crosshairs.

“He is a different kind of villain,” Amell shared during our visit to the set, as “Betrayal” was being filmed. “If The Count was very diabolical and scheme-y, this guy is sort of reckless and incredibly confident. And I don’t go after him; he comes after me, which is a change for us.”

To that end, Vanch “figures out who is close to me, and if I have any weak spots, and he tries to exploit them,” Amell says. For that reason (and perhaps another), Laurel gets targeted by the big bad. “You definitely see some more of the relationship betweenBetrayal Laurel and the Arrow, and you see a lot of betrayal going on,” Katie Cassidy shared. “I mean, this is a big episode for Laurel and there’s a lot of action and a lot of things happening.” The actress then echoes something Amell has hinted at, saying, “Yeah, there is a huge, huge ending that I am really excited about…. I think it might be one of my favorites.”

And what were Amell’s own words to tease the bejesus out of “Betrayal”? “I will say this. The ending of Episode 13 is season finale-worthy. It comes out of nowhere,” he enthused. “It is something that people have been waiting for, and it is one of those moments that end with people screaming at the television and clamoring for next week.

“It is the most [gasp-worthy] ending of the entire series, so far,” he added.

As for milder-mannered Oliver’s own arc within the episode, he will show Moira his father’s notebook, which he got from Felicity (who got it off Walter), and question her about the names on the list. And that will likely put Mom in a pinch. ”More suspicions are raised around her” — including and especially by Diggle, said Susannah Thompson. (Watch for a tense exchange ‘tween the two when he steps in as her driver for the night, and she ominously notes, “It’s a very dangerous city, Mr. Diggle.”)

And, as previously promoted, the episode also flashes back to Oliver’s very early island days, including his first meeting with Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke (played by Spartacus’ Manu Bennett).

All told, at least two major twists are on tap tonight — so if you think photos floating around from the next episode reveal all, think again. What are your predictions for “Betrayal’s” big bombshells?

Speaking with ET Online, actor Manu Bennett talks about his role as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in tonight's episode of Arrow, "Betrayal". He discusses his audition for the action-heavy role, and how he discovered that he was cast as well as his preparation. He then comments on what we can expect to see from his take on the iconic DC Comics character. For ET's full interview with Bennett, in which he talks about Spartacus and The Hobbit, click the source link below. Arrow airs on Wednesdays 8 PM EST on The CW.

On Auditioning For The Role Of Deathstroke And How He Found Out About His Casting:

"When I read the script in LA, I was a guy named Holloway. So when I flew to Vancouver [where Arrow films], I thought I was playing a guy named Holloway. When I got to the airport, my manager said, [your casting] has been released online, so I opened the link and it said 'Manu Bennett has been cast to play Slade Wilson, a.k.a Deathstroke.' I rang my manager up saying, 'They've made a mistake!' When I went into the offices, the [producers] told me they don't like information getting out there, they hold their cards close to the vest, so that was all a lead on for me to end up being Deathstroke."

On His Preparation For The Role:

"It was such a quick casting process, but the Spartacus cast members got invited to Kuwait to meet the military [in November 2012]. We went to one of the American bases and while I was there, I became friends with the Special Forces guys. They showed me a whole bunch of moves and the choke-outs and the different disarming maneuvers. Funnily enough, the special forces guys showed me moves I'm doing on the show! There's a hidden language in life and you just have to keep your eyes peeled for the signs. It's really fascinating."

On What We Can Expect From His Take On Slade Wilson, And How Much Action Will Be Seen:

"Stephen [Amell] and I have really started building something that I know the fans are excited about. But Slade will be a big surprise to people -- the relationship between him and Oliver is not what anyone's expecting. We don't start off the way people expect us to start off. That's actually all I can say about it.

"During the [Arrow] audition, I needed to get Arrow in a headlock...and I choked the reader out. He collapsed on the floor. I didn't mean to, I honestly didn't. I just got in the moment. I looked at the casting director and expected to be kicked out of the room, but they loved it. He was looking at me like I did something extraordinary, not criminal. There was something in my realism that has meaning in this industry. I'm not a big subscriber to method acting, but realism is something I always like to put into my roles. I'm a firm believer that there's a fine line between just acting and selling a scene as something the audience truly believes. And I take it very seriously. Maybe too seriously in this case."

- Arrow Canadian CTV Promo 1.14 "The Odyssey":

- La CW renueva "Arrow" para una segunda temporada (TVLine):
Aunque no parece que sea una sorpresa, la CW acaba de renovar a "Arrow", "The Vampire Diaries" y "Supernatural" para una nueva temporada.

He aquí la nota de prensa:
LA CW ANUNCIA LA TEMPRANA RENOVACIÓN DE TRES SERIES PARA LA TEMPORADA 2013-2014

“Arrow,” “The Vampire Diaries” Y “Supernatural” regresarán la próxima temporada.
