- El elenco de iZombie habla sobre el Plan Real de Major, los cerebros de Mago y más (IGN):
El elenco de iZombie habla sobre el Plan Real de Major, los cerebros de Mago y más
Por Eric Goldman / 17 Nov 2015

Last week’s iZombie had a big revelation at the end, as we discovered Major (Robert Buckley) isn’t actually killing zombies, as he’s been ordered to by Vaughn Du Clark (Steven Weber), but storing them away in a freezer. I visited the Vancouver set of iZombie this week -- I’ll have more soon from that visit -- where Buckley remarked, “It’s such a huge reveal because up until this point it’s been really tough to settle with the fact that our white knight is killing people. It was a nice relief to see he’s not. He hasn’t turned into a completely cold-blooded killer.”

Buckley added, “I think that was the way of showing he’s kind of working on a secret plan and he has to go through the motions because he knows he’s being watched. To me, he’s not killing anyone yet. He’s buying himself some time to figure out a way to not kill anyone.”

Tuesday night’s new episode of iZombie involves Liv (Rose McIver) eating the brain of a magician, and Buckley revealed, “I was so excited about this episode because I was a magician growing up, so as soon as I heard… I think the way I found out was Diane [Ruggiero-Wright] had texted me out of the blue one day and said ‘Hey, can you still perform any tricks and if so, which ones?’

Buckley said that as soon as he learned why he was being asked that, his first thought was, "This is going to be so awesome!"

"We brought in David Blaine’s consultant," Buckley continued. "It was so great having all these magic tricks going on on set. It’s so fun. A large part of what’s happening this week is the way this magician’s brain effects Liv and how that carries over into [Liv and Major’s] relationship. What you’re going to see is this magician was very morbid and very death obsessed. That starts to become a big part of Liv’s personality to which Major is left wondering, ‘What the hell? What’s going on here?’ I think it’s the first time, since they’ve rekindled things that we’re going to see some struggle and that things aren’t just lovey dovey. Now we’ve exited the honeymoon period and we’re going to get to deal with some of the reality of our relationship problems.”

Malcolm Goodwin (“Clive Babineaux”) explained that in the same episode, “Clive, he wants to get the piece of the brain that Bozzio (Jessica Harmon) gave him. He wants to get confirmation that this is a human brain. He doesn’t know. So he sends it to a lab to try to get some confirmation about what exactly it is. He works on that. He also gets Bozzio to help him with that because he doesn’t have as much access as she has. So she actually gets involved like, ‘Let’s get this tested and figure out what it is.’”

Goodwin elaborated that this is opening the door to Bozzio getting, “A little bit more involved because our cases are kind of mixing, because York’s hair follicle was found at Meat Cute a couple of episodes ago. So they’re starting to come together and a lot of the people she’s seeing and interviewing start connecting to the people that I think are involved in the Meat Cute situation, outside of just Major.”

David Anders (“Blaine DeBeers”) also noted that this week’s episode had a lot of scenes between Liv and Blaine, explaining, “They share a common foe so they pool their resources and pool their knowledge together in order to find out some more information to take down this foe. They have to team up and he has to deal with her tripping out on magician brain while they are being Hardy boys together. It’s a lot of fun. It’s going to be a good episode.”

Recently, I visited the Vancouver set of iZombie where I sat down with the show's star, Rose McIver, to chat about the many plotlines swirling around Liv and her friends these days. McIver discussed the show's growing list of bad guys, the continually complicated situation with Major, her oh-so untrustworthy roommate (and Max Rager spy), Gilda, and more.

IGN: We’ve met Mr. Boss. Now you’ve got him in play and you have these three villains now - You’ve got Blaine still and you’ve got Vaughn Du Clark. Will those start to come together a bit; the fact that there are these different threats out there for her?

Rose McIver: I think the thing about those three villains and most villains in general is that they’re pretty self serving. It’s unusual for them to form an alliance. There’s a little bit of overlap in some of the story but they’re definitely three people who are looking out for themselves.

IGN: With Blaine specifically, she has no reason to trust him, even as we’re getting a lot of nuance to Blaine this season and learning a lot about him. But for Liv, does she still need to keep her guard up at all times with this guy?

McIver: Absolutely. I don’t think Liv trusts Blaine as far as she can kick him. She knows that he has the capacity to kill people in cold blood and she has been personally hurt by decisions that she’s made. She doesn’t trust him at all. But she knows, for the greater good, for them to be able to find a cure, she needs him. So they have a mutual understanding but I don’t think she’ll be sharing any intimate secrets with him.

IGN: Sometimes they maybe have to work along side each other, but they’re both kind of wary, always watching each other?

McIver: Absolutely, yeah. They feel like kind of two dogs that are on guard. They have a nice rapport as well. They do have an entertaining banter but they’re not relaxed. She’s on guard.

IGN: It’s been interesting to see what you guys have done with Liv and Major this season. As I’ve mentioned to you, I really like that it’s a realistic look at an unrealistic situation. For the two of them, is that going to constantly be, for a while at least, figuring this out and seeing if this can work at all?

McIver: All relationships are compromise. They just happen to have a very big compromise to make in that she’s a zombie! At least he knows now. I think that’s the biggest thing that kind of gives me some hope for them, is that they’re not operating blind anymore and she doesn’t have this big secret from him. Unfortunately, he has a big secret from her now, in terms of what he’s doing, work-wise. It’s kind of a ticking time bomb in terms of how that will all be revealed but it’s nice that they’re able to work together and try to make it work because she loves him dearly and doesn’t want to be with anyone else.

IGN: The other ticking time bomb relating to that is her roommate. Are any suspicions being raised yet by Liv or has she said all the right things so far?

McIver: I feel like it’s thast funny girl/girl thing. She knows something is up with her. She knows she’s a bit hostile or edgy and kind of prickly. I don’t think she has a clue what her involvement is with Max Rager or Major or anyone. But she definitely isn’t relaxed around her either. I think there’s some sort of intuition that has kicked in that says, “This girl is a little unusual.”

IGN: I have to ask you the requisite question of what are your upcoming brains? What have they asked you to do because it’s amazing to see what they throw at you.

McIver: I’m excited. We did the magician brain. That was one of my favorites. Last year at Comic-Con someone asked what I’d like to eat and I said a magician. So it’s kind of cool. Now I’m starting to feel like I have the power to make these things happen which is alarming. I have a stalker brain. I don’t want to give too much away but there’s some diverse stuff. It’s all over the map.

- Preparáos para una 'Liv' convertida en Superhéroe (IGN):
Preparáos para una 'Liv' convertida en Superhéroe
Por Eric Goldman 07 Dic 2015

While iZombie is based on a DC Comic, it’s specifically from DC’s Vertigo imprint and not based in the traditional superhero world – but that will change, at least for a week, on Tuesday’s new episode.

When I spoke to the cast about this episode, “Cape Town” on a recent visit to the set of iZombie, there was a lot of excitement about it, with Malcolm Goodwin (“Clive”) noting, “It’s one of my favorite ones. It reminds me of Kick-Ass and I love Kick-Ass.”

Yes, this time out, Liv will find herself eating the brain – and thus taking on the traits -- of a real life costumed vigilante; someone Goodwin described to me as, “A teacher by day. He was a teacher at a woodshop and he posed as a superhero at night.”

On top of that, Goodwin added, “You see that he’s not the only one. He’s not the only superhero out there. So you get to meet all these crazy vigilantes of Seattle and all their costumes. I have a lot of videos from those episodes. That’s a fun one. Liv and Clive bump heads on that episode, majorly.”

Rose McIver (“Liv”), who already has some experience in this realm thanks to her time on Power Rangers, shared the enthusiasm for “Cape Town,” noting, “It’s so much fun to play a superhero! I feel like Liv kind of is a superhero in general, the way that she works and has this supernatural element that helps her do good for humanity and zomb-manity. But I think that it’s really fun to see her play with the tropes of the superhero world and indulge in some ways and also kind of sendup, in other ways, some of the superhero genre stuff. It’s a lot of fun and she’s kick ass. She’s cool!”

Said Robert Buckley (“Major”), “Any fan of the superhero genre will not be let down. They go for it and Rose, to her credit, really dove in headfirst. It’s a big episode. It’s the first one this year that we had to add an extra shooting day because of how much is going on. There’s a lot of great action and a lot of great cape references and the hero lore that goes on.”

While Major does have a notable storyline this week, as he has an important bit of interaction with a new friend, Buckley laughed that he couldn't help but be jealous of the superhero aspect he's not involved in. “Unfortunately, I wish Major was more in the mix! This was one of those episodes where I was like, ‘God, I wish I could eat some of that brain!’ I’d like to see Major lean into the superhero thing. It would have been awesome to see where he would have taken that, given everything he’s doing right now.”

iZombie isn’t set in the same universe as The Flash and Arrow, despite airing on the same network (and filming in the same city; Vancouver), but McIver remarked, “I felt a little bit like Grant Gustin standing on top of a building at some point. It really was the superhero stance. I was like ‘Oh, I really wish Grant was here to see this!’”

Diane Rugiero habla sobre 'Liv' jugando al superhéroe durante la Midseason Finale de "iZombie"
Por Amy Ratcliffe 08 Dic, 2015

Liv Moore (Rose McIver) goes through mood swings unlike anyone else. The iZombie lead’s special dietary requirements have her switching personalities with each meal to hilarious, effective, and often disastrous effect. So far, Liv’s been a painter, musician, a morbid magician, and a grumpy old man—and that’s just a tiny smattering of the brains she’s ingested thus far. And in the upcoming Season 2 midseason finale, “Cape Town,” Liv will become a vigilante crime fighter. Series executive producer Diane Ruggiero wrote the episode, and while on a visit to the iZombie set, Nerdist was part of a small group of journalists to get some details about the episode from Ruggiero herself.

Ruggiero said she wanted to do a nod to Phoenix Jones, a real-life superhero. The Seattle citizen is a vigilante who took battling crime into his own hands and eventually started wearing a full costume. He’s part of a group in Seattle called the Rain City Superhero Movement.

Ruggiero tapped into that real life news for the episode. “I’m literally fulfilling my own fantasies via the show. So, she eats the brain of a wannabe superhero. You know, like Phoenix Jones. Liv eats the brain of a vigilante, and it’s literally because I just want to do that. It’s our holiday episode, so it’s my Christmas present to myself.”

Liv doesn’t get a complete costume, but there is a slight wardrobe change. She gets a special outfit, and as she sat down for interviews inside Liv’s apartment, McIver teased how Liv ended up with the new accessories: Clive’s closet. But she doesn’t just upgrade her accouterment, she also adopts the deceased superhero’s name—The Fog—too. The actual name of the murder victim is Chris Allred—a mash-up of Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, the writer and artist (respectively), and co-creators of the iZombie comic on which the series is based.

And that’s just one example of the fun Ruggiero had with names. She said, “Probably the funnest moment of my iZombie experience thus far was coming up with fake superhero names. I actually called one of our writers, Kit Boss, because he was there when I was—he was mocking me periodically throughout the day as I was coming up with these names like someone’s life depended on it, like, ‘That’s not quite funny enough.’ So, I had gone to his office very serious and asked him what he thought of ‘Wonder Puma.’ He was literally like, ‘Are you fucking kidding? This is your desperate question? What I think of ‘Wonder Puma’?’ So, now I call Kit Boss ‘Wonder Puma.’ He does not enjoy it.”

Ruggiero mentioned that while the costume designers were working on the vigilante costumes they’d share some of their work with her—things like utility belts. She joked that she wanted one for personal use and said, “I think my only weapon would be duct tape because i’’s the only one I would know how to use. I would just be running up to people and just duct-taping them to things; I’d be completely ineffective.”

Besides feeling compelled to patrol the streets of Seattle to keep its residents safe, Liv is also faced with Blaine bringing in a lead on a possible zombie cure. McIver mentioned she loves working with David Anders, so she’s glad that they’ve been teamed up more this season. “It’s such a nice opportunity to work with David Anders. He’s one of my favorite actors.” She mentioned she liked how the writers came up with a way for Liv to have to rely on Blaine to get her chance at being human again.

JJJ caught up with our favorite on-screen villain to chat about what’s ahead for Blaine – including possible romance!

Is Blaine redeemable? What’s his deal with Liv (Rose McIver)? And what does David love most about his roles on The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon a Time?

All was answered! Check it:

Don’t forget – iZombie airs TONIGHT, December 8 @ 9PM on The CW!

JustJaredJr.com: Congrats on more episodes! Did you do anything to celebrate?

David Anders: I was busy Blaine-ing my brains out. Found out from many a crew member and gave out many many many high-fives to commemorate.

JJJ: Every time we think Blaine might have some good qualities, he goes and kills a family member or something pretty bad. Is he a redeemable character or is he evil at his core?

DA: I reckon he’s redeemably awful and we’re getting into more of why he is such in these upcoming episodes. People already seem to like him enough-ish in spite of his transgressions and I know when what’s to come comes…folks are going to play their tiny violins while weeping at a support group for him.

JJJ: His relationship with Liv is one of the most interesting of the series. How would you describe it? Is it a friendship? Is he attracted to her?

DA: Oh sure, he’s attracted to her. But also intrigued. She’s such a patron saint even when faced with being this weird aberration of nature…and bad utopium and max rager. I do think he thinks of them of being friendly adversaries. Of course, Blaine doesn’t read social cues real well.

JJJ: Speaking of attraction, we sort of love the idea of Peyton (Aly Michalka) and Blaine in a twisted way. Is that something you could see happening after some light flirting in recent episodes?

DA: I think there’s a strong chance of those sparks turning into wildfire. But like said wildfire…nothing good can come from it.

JJJ: How do you think Blaine would handle being in a real relationship? Would it soften him?

DA: Given the opportunity for true love I think you’d see the kid be a real true blue softie dear-hearted son of a b-tch. I can’t wait to see that. And play it!

JJJ: You’ve often played the bad guys we love to hate. What your secret to riding that line of likeability?

DA: Can’t say I can speak to that. I’m always flattered when people say that, but I feel most of the things my guys do on-screen are too despicable to quip his way back into good graces.

JJJ: Do you prefer zombie Blaine or cured Blaine? What are the major differences in how you portray him, if any?

DA: I’ve found human Blaine is a lot more dare I say, human. Flawed. Not as cocksure. Lots of self-examination and reflection, whereas ZomBlaine doesn’t give a f-ck bout nothing. They both love that paper tho.

JJJ: We have to ask about Vampire Diaries. What’s your fondest memory from filming that show?

DA: That show was such unexpected perfection working with old chums like Over the Shoulder [Ian] Smolderholder and making life long chums in [Nina] Dobrev, [Paul] Wesley, [Michael] Trevino, [Zach] Roerig, [Matt] Davis, [Sara] Canning, Paul Sommers, Kevin Williamson etc et al and on and on. Too many to “fonds” to count,so I’ll just say “every moment involving me.”

JJJ: You were recently back on Once Upon A Time. How was it being back on that set?

DA: Just like once upon old times! Love the lot of them over there, so it was nice to go back even if only for a frame or two.

The streets will be safe with superhero Liv (Rose McIver) patrolling her city on the midseason finale of “iZombie.”

The episode — “Cape Town” — sees Liv eat the brain of a recently killed high school shop teacher who fancies himself a superhero vigilante that suits up in a cape and goes by the alias The Fog. To catch his killer, Liv’s going to have to put on a costume and secret identity all her own.

For Diane Ruggiero — “iZombie” co-creator and writer of this episode — turning everyone’s favorite zombie into a superhero is practically a dream come true.

“It’s my Christmas present to myself that there’s a fake superhero,” she tells Zap2it and a handful of other outlets on the set of the CW series. “Probably the funnest moment of my ‘iZombie’ experience thus far was coming up with fake superhero names.”

For Ruggiero, it all goes back to the 2011 HBO documentary “Superheroes,” about real-life people who take up the role of costumed vigilante in their own towns across the United States.

In fact, one of the most notorious real-life superheroes happens to be based out of Seattle — where “iZombie” is set. Phoenix Jones has been attempting to keep the streets of Seattle safe for years and was a member of the Rain City Superhero Movement — an organization of “costumed activists.”

Sadly, Phoenix won’t be seen on on “iZombie.” Luckily, there’s more than just The Fog and Liv’s alter ego to behold, though.

The iZombie fall finale packed quite a punch.

As Liv (Rose McIver) took on the persona of a part-time amateur crime-fighter (thanks to her brain of the week), her relationships fractured: Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) realized how much danger Liv was in after she got shot, while Major (Robert Buckley) tried coming to grips with Liv’s multiple personality changes with each new brain. He couldn’t understand why she wasn't open to options that would give her an out, making Liv realize they had to break up (again). Adding to the trauma and drama, Ravi (Rahul Kohli) discovered the zombie cure—which Blaine (David Anders) and Major reaped the benefits of—but it had a limited window of effectiveness, so he set out to find the ingredients to make another batch.

We spoke with Diane Ruggiero-Wright, iZombie co-creator and writer of tonight’s episode, “Cape Town," about those relationship splits, Ravi’s evolving quest for the cure and more.

When you went about writing this episode, how much of the story was inspired by the superhero shows on The CW?
I am the biggest nerd…I watch everything. I’m so excited about [The CW’s upcoming superhero series] DC's Legends of Tomorrow. I’m a big superhero fan, a big comics fan. I do secretly wish I was a superhero…I think I’d be really bad at it. The best fun was naming the superheroes. I want people to call me Ghost Cobra. Or Mega Fist. And the whole costume process was really fun, too. For me, it was just total wish fulfillment, because I love all those shows, and I’m on the network.

A lot of things came to a boiling point all at once. What made the timing right for things to explode?
We knew we were getting the break, and we wanted to do something big. To be honest, we weren’t sure what our situation would be, if we were getting the back-nine [episodes], or if we were just getting the first 13. We weren’t sure what was happening, and it was hard to break the first [arc], because we never knew how much time we had. So we eventually just said, instead of looking at 13 as the big episode [of the arc], we were going to treat 9 as the biggest episode, because it was the one before our break. And, hopefully, [we would then] be able to treat 13 as a regular episode, because we’d be getting more. Luckily, we did get more. So we treated 9 as a midseason finale.

Liv and Clive’s partnership has been such an important part of the series. Now that he is more conscious about protecting her, where does that leave Liv, and how does it impact them going forward?
I think it’s really hard for Liv, because she was in such a bad place when she started with Clive. That relationship, and that working relationship, brought so much to her life and helped her so much in dealing with the newfound status of her life. It’s not going to be easy for her, but she’s also a tough girl and will work towards making her life better. But there’s definitely a rift between them, and over the rest of the season, their relationship will take some turns. There’s going to be some big stuff going on with the Liv/Clive friendship.

As viewers, we know Liv can’t stop her visions, even if Clive doesn’t want to work with her. How will she be an investigator if he doesn't want her to be as involved?
It’s schmuck baiting to say, “Liv and Clive will never speak again.” It’s more that they have come to a kind of agreement. And over the course of the season, they’ll be redefining their work relationship.

Speaking of relationships, what led to the decision to break up Major and Liv before any reveals about Major’s relationship with Rita (Leanne Lapp) or his zombie “killing”?
We really liked their relationship not ending because of some chick. Their relationship has been through so much, that if it wasn't going to work out, we wanted it to be because of reasons we believed. As much as people want love to conquer all, being in love with a zombie is hard. Dealing with someone whose brain changes every day is hard. I don’t know how the United States of Tara husband did it, but it’s a hard thing. Not being able to have full-on, regular sex with your partner, and having them change brains every day, makes a relationship very difficult.

Another thing that was important for me was, in this new life of Liv's, working with Clive had become a calling…and given her purpose. The idea of someone not getting that is like, “If you don’t get that, you don’t get me.” There’s all these sorts of elements. And then there’s this key point of, “I have changed from this person you first loved. Now I’m me, but I’m also this new person. And if you can’t understand this new person and you can’t roll with it and you don’t respect it, you’re not meant to be with me.” Liv says, “You’re in love with the girl that I was. But I’ve changed. You have to be in love with that girl, too.” It’s kind of brutally honest. But Major hasn’t really made that shift. I’m glad [the split is] not just about some girl. I think that would be giving the audience short shrift.

Is their relationship really over? Or is it a will they/won’t they get back together situation?
Oh, I think they’re truly done for [now]. Is it ever [possible] in the future? Who knows about the future. But this is real; they’re broken up…I can promise you we won’t come to episode 10 and they’re back together. That’s one of the things about the breakup being substantive, about “I am a different person now.” It’s kind of a big deal. It’s not a wishy-washy, let’s-get-back-together-in-two-episodes deal.

I can't imagine this will change Major’s desire to protect Liv, but how will this impact his side project of “killing” zombies?
One of the things I love about their relationship is, the basis of it is friendship. Not being together is not going to change, for one minute, Major’s desire to protect her…he still loves her; they still love each other. They’re just not in a place where they can have a romantic relationship.

Will there be a new romantic relationship for either of them in the near future?
There is a potential love interest for one of them.

Is the love interest someone we know or someone new?
Someone that you know.

On a more dangerous topic, the cure wasn’t quite as effective as one might have hoped. How will Ravi be dealing with the setback?
I think Ravi, as you saw at the end of the episode, will be really determined to find the ingredients he needs. I think there’s a lot more of a ticking clock now, and a lot of pressure for him. He’s going to pull out all the stops to make this cure, and it’s not going to be an easy road. Every time he takes two steps forward, there is something in his way; he can’t catch a break, cure-wise.

Mr. Boss saved Liv’s life in the episode. How much is this going to bite her in the butt?
It doesn’t really bite her in the butt that much. Even if he could [say], “Hey, remember that time I saved you?”, she’d be like, “Yeah? And, murderer?” [Laughs] It’s out there, it’s mentioned, but it’s not like he can control her or anything. It’s more that this guy she wants to take down saved her life.

Patrick Gallagher recently tweeted about appearing on the show. Is there anything you can say about his character?
I don’t think I can say who he’s playing, but I love him. Who doesn’t love Patrick Gallagher? [Note: A rep for the show later shared that Gallagher will be playing a reporter named Jeremy Chu in an upcoming episode.]

iZombie has never shied away from embracing Veronica Mars (which iZombie co-creator Rob Thomas created, and Ruggiero-Wright worked on). Should fans expect any homages or nods in the next batch of episodes?
John Enbom is writing two episodes…he wrote on Veronica Mars with us, and he wrote Party Down. He was kind of a fan fave with Veronica Mars viewers...we’re trying very hard to cast some of the Veronica Mars alums in his episode. Dan Etheridge, who is also a Veronica Mars alum, is directing, so we’re trying to get as many Veronica Mars people as we can involved.

Also, with 19 episodes instead of the traditional 22, will storylines be impacted? Will anything planned for this year be pushed to season 3?
If you knew Rob well, you would know there’s no pushing. [Laughs] Now it’s, “Oh, the stuff we’re going to do in 22 [episodes], we’re going to do in 19.” There’s just a ton happening; there was already a ton happening, but now there’s a ton happening. It’s a river raft.

Will the show ever go back to Liv’s drama with her family?
We’ll definitely be seeing them in 2016. I’m not really sure how much, but we’ll definitely be seeing them. It’'ll be pretty satisfying for fans.

What brains of the week are coming up in 2016?
We get to see Liv on this method actor brain. There's a show—it’s been in episodes—[in their world] called Zombie High. It started off as a joke in the writers’ room that [the characters] were watching a show called Zombie High that they were really into. And [episode 10] is about [the death of] one of the actors on Zombie High. So it's Liv eating the brain of an actor who plays a zombie fighter on a show about a bunch of high school kids trapped in a school fighting zombies. So there’s a lot of fun, tongue-in-cheek things about zombie TV shows. And it’s written by Kit Boss, who writes a lot of amazing episodes.

What else you can tease about what’s in store next year, especially for Blaine?
There are so many good episodes in the back half. There’s some Liv/Ravi stuff coming up that’s super fun. And Blaine has some hilarious stuff regarding his dad…he has a really fantastic “get back at dad” moment in the new year.
