In the Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 finale, a big win was tempered by a bittersweet loss.

Unceremoniously deposited/ditched back in Star City of 2016 — albeit a few months later, meaning Sara heard from her dad the tragic news about Laurel — the team eventually regrouped and summoned Rip Hunter, so that they could complete their mission. And finish the job they did, vanquishing the immortal Vandal Savage not once but three times, and in three different eras.

Afterward, though, legends-of-tomorrow-hawkgirl-leaves the Legends were down another head, as Kendra aka Hawkgirl chose to start a new life (so to speak) with her rescued soul mate Carter. “It was one of the most difficult projects I’ve ever worked on, just because it was a whole new world for me,” says Ciara Renée, who largely worked in theater prior to the CW spinoff. “But it was really wonderful, because the cast and crew were behind me the whole way. I could write a whole book about how much I learned in one season.”

Plus, she notes with a smile, “I got the opportunity to fly! And to play a superheroine, where there aren’t nearly enough of them. It was a great experience, and I’m glad to have had it.”

Legends showrunner Marc Guggenheim spoke exclusively with TVLine about the decision to clip Hawkgirl’s wings, as well as share insight into the introduction of the DC Comics hero Hourman (Suits‘ Patrick J. Adams), who appeared in the finale and will continue on for a few episodes of Season 2.

TVLINE | What went into the decision regarding Kendra’s fate in the finale?
In the finale, as you know, Vandal Savage is killed and Kendra and Carter literally fly off into the sunset together. We got into the writers’ room to start work on Season 2, working up character journeys for each of the characters. We got to Kendra and we found ourselves a little stymied by how neat a bow we tied off her story with, to the point where it was like, “Now what?” It’s got such a definitive ending, and it’s such a graceful ending. We questioned, “How do we get her back on the team? What would be motivating her?” It felt like the ending of Season 1 was very much about her needing to take some time with Carter and with developing her new identity, and every time we talked about how to bring her back to the team, it felt truncated and rushed. That started to make us think, “Maybe we should let this character be on her own, off the ship for a while.” That’s ultimately what we decided to do.

TVLINE | Did special effects play any small part in the decision? You do have three people flying around….
No, not at all. In fact, truth be told, if visual effects factored into our decision ever, it would be an argument against writing someone off, because you invest time and money in developing the assets and the digi[tal] doubles and the costumes and everything to create any of these characters — whether they fly or they don’t. Whenever you only use a character for 16 episodes and then you move off from the character, it’s probably not the most cost-effective way of doing things.

TVLINE | Will we see Kendra and Carter at all in Season 2?
We don’t know. As with all things, if we have the right story, absolutely. If Ciara and Falk [Hentschel] are amenable and game… What’s really wonderful about this universe that we’ve built up [is] no one’s ever gone forever. I’ve been saying with respect to [Arrow’s] Laurel, dead is not goodbye. And alive and goodbye is not goodbye. It’s just a matter of those characters coming back around in an organic way, especially on Legends, where the conceit of the show has always been the ship itself is a revolving door. There can always be old faces returning and new faces being introduced. That’s part of the show.

TVLINE | How did you arrive legends-hourmanat the DC Comics character of Rex Tyler aka Hourman for Patrick J. Adams to play?
It was basically based upon a conversation I had with [DC Comics CCO] Geoff Johns, where we were talking about the variety of different characters Patrick could play. What’s cool about Patrick’s appearance is he’s not just appearing as Hourman but he’s also appearing as a member of the Justice Society of America. So for me, it was very much like, “OK, who’s a character that I associate with the JSA? Who can show up, say his name, and I go, ‘Ohhhh, JSA —that’s cool’?” Certainly, Hourman is a key member of the JSA, at least the version of the JSA that I hold near and dear.

TVLINE | Are you feeling like Season 2 will be another contained one-season arc? Is that the formula you’re liking?
[Legends] was always designed to be this hybrid, serialized/anthology show. We always said that each year would be its own distinct movie — almost to the point that you could give each season a subtitle. So we’ve got the same objective for next year and I think it’s really cool and exciting. It will have a very clear beginning, middle and end, much the same way Season 1 did. But it’ll be constructed a little bit differently, in so far as this first season was a pilot coming off of the Arrow/Flash crossover, so the villain was already set up. We weren’t able to roll things out with the mystery that we typically like to do on the shows. This will be a bit more of a cold start, which is exciting for us.

While the DC Comics films may be focusing on the Justice League of America, the DC TV universe is going further back in time to introduce the Justice Society of America, the very first superhero team-up ever published in comic books.

The CW's Legends of Tomorrow used Thursday's season one finale to reveal that Rex Tyler aka Hourman (Patrick J. Adams), along with the JSA, would be a major part of the Arrow/Flash spinoff's sophomore run. He arrived on a Waverider as the Legends team intended to take off as Time Masters, warning them that they would all die if they did.

"With his final words in the finale, he planted a pretty deep flag about where we're headed in season two, which is not just introducing Hourman but introducing his teammates in the Justice Society of America," executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells The Hollywood Reporter. "For comic book fans, everyone knows the Justice Society is really the precursor to the Justice League, so it's a pretty big move in our DC universe here on TV."

Although the DC Comics franchise keeps its film and television projects separate (unlike rival Marvel, which connects its film and TV projects in one shared universe), it's interesting to note that it's the newest — rather than the highest-rated DC show (Flash) — that is going to be the one introducing the iconic superhero team.

"God bless both the studio and the network. They've never said, 'This is too big. You can't do it,'" Guggenheim says. "They have often said, 'Jeez, this is so big, how are you going to do it?' They say that a lot. They're always asking us how the hell we're going to pull something off. Inevitably, our answer is, 'We literally have no idea. But we'll figure out a way.'"

The JSA was first introduced in 1940's All Star Comics #3, though it wasn't until the Silver Age of comics in 1961 that the JSA was retooled to become the Justice League of America. New rules were then set to differentiate the two groups: the JSA was established as the superhero team up from Earth-2, while the JLA came from Earth-1. This allowed for cross-pollination between the two universes and teams moving forward.

The introduction of Hourman and the JSA won't be the only reason Legends of Tomorrow will look different in season two. Along with some casting shakeups, the elimination of the Time Council and the set timeline takes away a huge part of the story and the rules that were established all season long.

"One of the other big things we've done in the season finale is we planted another flag in the form of Rip's [Arthur Darvil] statement. Because the Time Masters are essentially gone and the Legends have destroyed the Oculus, that all means that someone else has to do the job of the Time Masters," Guggenheim says. "Our Legends take that on as their new responsibility. It's sort of like, you break it, you buy it."

"That's really exciting to us, that our team of Legends, our misfits, are going to be responsible for the preservation of the timeline and protection of history," he adds. "As we've seen, our team, our guys are not always the most responsible people around so maybe time has got some new troubles. But it will provide a lot of fodder, a lot of fun story for season two."

While immortal tyrant Vandal Savage's (Casper Crump) story was definitively concluded in the season one finale, Guggenheim warns that season two's big villain is going to raise the stakes for the Legends team.

"The season two big bad is actually not going to be the [alien race of] Thanagarians," Guggenheim says. "It's going to be something else entirely. All I'll really say about the nemesis in season two is Vandal Savage looks like a walk in the park compared to what the Legends will be facing. This will be a much, much bigger threat. I'm going to leave it at that because when we do reveal it, it's going to be pretty big. People will be asking, 'Vandal who?' once they get the full picture of what our team is up against. It's going to be way bigger than what you can even imagine, I can guarantee it."

On tonight’s season finale of the CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Hawkman and Hawkgirl’s 4,000-year quest to kill the immortal Vandal Savage finally came to a successful end. After completing their mission, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were seen at the end of the finale flying off into the sunset.

With the Vandal Savage story arc over, we will see a lot less of Hawkman and Hawkgirl in Season 2. For actress Ciara Renée, who was a series regular on Season 1, playing Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl, that means that she is exiting as a series regular. (Falk Hentschel played Hawkman as a recurring guest star.)

This is the second major cast change on Legends heading into Season 2, along with Wentworth Miller’s departure as a series regular to become a regular in the combined Greg Berlanti universe, recurring on both Legends and The Flash next season.

Legends co-creator/executive producer Marc Guggenheim said that he and the series’ other writers did not know that Renée and Hentschel would not have a significant presence in Season 2 until they got together to think about next season.

“We went through the team, made a list of all the characters and started to think of stories for them. When we got to Hawkman and Hawkgirl, we had trouble coming up with stories. The bow was tied so tightly and neatly with their story in the finale, that everything we thought of felt very forced. After 4000 years, they were no longer under the specter of Vandal, and we felt they need some time off. Bringing them back to the team as soon as the the beginning of Season 2 fedc-hawkgirllt premature.”

The idea behind Legends always was to have a rotating team of characters, Guggenheim said. “We have a very organic system in place to take a break form characters.”

In Season 2, “the composition of the team is going to change; there will be some new faces on the Waverider,” he said. “The season finale planted some very significant flags in terms of what the new concept of the show will be in season 2.”

Legends already is recruiting two new team members for next season, casting a male and female new regulars.

“We always wanted Legends to be distinct season to season, not only in terms of the composition of the team but also in terms of mission statements. The team’s mission statement for Season 2 is more compelling than Season 1, and at the same time, it is more streamlined. It’s a little bit higher concept, a very clean notion that will allow the show to do things that it does best.”

Tonight's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow was a game changer.

Despite rumors floating around the Internet that it would be Green Lantern Alan Scott appearing on board the Waverider at the end of the season, Time Master Rip Hunter has decided to be a Time Master -- along with most of the Legends and the newly-introduced Rex Tyler (Hourman of the Justice Society of America).

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim talked to us a little bit earlier this week about the future of the series, now that the Hourman cat is out of the bag.

Given the appearance of Hourman in this episode, and the reports that a couple of World War II-affiliated heroes are being cast for next season, would it be fair to guess that we could see some Justice Society-related characters showing up next season?

Casting breakdowns are not news. That’s true for any show, but for these shows, we know that they’re going to get picked up and reported as news, so the casting breakdowns for these shows are fake. Fake, fake, fake, fake, fake, fake. The names are fake, the descriptions are fake, everything is completely fake.

So people can assume whatever they want, and people can keep reporting on fake news, but I just want them to know that it’s fake.

With the fall of Vanishing Point and the deaths of most of the Time Masters, will Rip and the crew of the Waverider take on a more Linear Men kind of lean, mean model, where they’re a bit more self-directed?

With respect to the mission statement for Season Two, it’s basically that there are no more Time Masters -- and there’s that line in the finale, “Somebody’s got to do that job, it might as well be us.”

Yeah, I think we’re definitely taking a Linear Men kind of shape. We’re ultimately going to focus on telling the kinds of stories we want to see on the show, which includes having them free to explore the timeline and the DC Universe in ways that we haven’t seen yet.

With the Oculus Wellspring destroyed, how does that change the way Rip deals with these missions? He can no longer just look to Gideon to tell him how his actions may have changed history and exactly how to fix it.

It’s very much like -- there’s that line in 15, where he says it’s like sailing without a map. We’ve always kind of said that while Rip is the captain of this timeship, he’s also like an old sea captain.

And the difference between a 21st Century sea captain who has GPS and radar and extremely accurate weather models, and a sea captain in the 1600s is a whole other kettle of fish. It’s a fundamentally different job in a lot of ways.

This season, there were a lot of kind of two or three episode mini-arcs, and then ultimately we saw it pay off in a big-picture kind of way because of the twist in Episode 14. Will that structure continue next season, or will we see a bit more of a linear narrative like on Arrow and The Flash?

You know...I think it will be a bit more linear, a bit different. I think that some of what you saw in Season One of Legends was a function of, we didn’t have a chance to plot it out the same way as we would with Arrow or The Flash. And ultimately it’s a different show than Arrow or The Flash, but I do think that the approach to storytelling will be much more similar next year.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow defeated immortal threat Vandal Savage during Thursday’s season finale, but in doing so, they lost part of the team.

Don’t worry, everyone survived — except Vandal, obviously — but with their centuries-long nemesis gone, Kendra (Ciara Renée) and Carter (Falk Hentschel) decided to start a new life together, one in which they wouldn’t constantly live in fear. And yes, this does mean that Renée will not be returning as a series regular in season 2. But is Kendra gone for good? EW turned to the actor to find out:


ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did you first learn Kendra would be leaving and how did you feel about about her sendoff?
CIARA RENEE: It had been something that was in talks for a little while toward the end of filming. We didn’t exactly know how we were going to wrap up the season, but once the final script came out, we understood where we were headed. Honestly, I was like, “Oh, I get it, it makes sense. We wrapped up the story. Totally cool.” Marc [Guggenheim], Phil [Klemmer] and I, we all chatted about it and we were like, “I think this is going to be for the best.”

How did you feel about her sendoff, that she did ultimately get to kill at least one version of Vandal?
Yeah, I was very excited about that. That was basically her whole purpose on the show and in this mission was to be the one person that had to kill Savage. I’m glad that she got to fulfill her purpose.

But did you feel like there was more story to tell?
With all of these comic book characters, there’s thousands and thousands of stories to tell. There’s 4,000 lifetimes to tell for Kendra, specifically, but there are plenty of origin stories and other earths and other dimensions for these characters. So I think absolutely there’s more to tell if that’s what maybe we would talk about later, or something like that. But for now, this is definitely the best move for everybody.

This show deals in time travel. Are you really gone for good? Or if they asked you back, would you return?
Yeah, I mean it definitely depends on what’s going on in my life. This show has really opened up a lot of opportunities for me and allowed me the freedom to start doing a lot of the writing that I’ve wanted to work on and starting my own production company. Yes, I would totally love to embody Hawkgirl again, but I’m also happy to be doing other things as well.

You come from a stage background, so how difficult was filming a show like Legends of Tomorrow where it’s very stunt heavy?
It was very difficult. It’s a huge transition from stage to TV. I think that there’s a lot of integrity and grit and awesomeness in stage, but nothing compares to a TV schedule. It’s very difficult and very grueling. It’s a very stunt-heavy show, there’s lots of fighting. Luckily having a stage background, it is a very physical thing that you do every night, so I felt like at least I had some preparation for that. It was very different, but I learned a great deal. I’m very grateful to have had that opportunity.

What was your favorite part about filming Legends?
I actually really did like doing the stunts. Yeah, it was very physically demanding and hard, but I liked feeling like a badass. My favorite part was probably our cast. We just worked so well together, and we were all so different that we meshed perfectly. I became close with a couple of my castmates. We really worked well together and we had a lot of fun together. It was very inspiring, and I learned a lot working with seasoned professionals like Wentworth Miller and Victor Garber. I’m going to miss my cast for sure.

What was it like filming your final scene?
Oh wow, honestly those two weeks were such a whirlwind. A lot was happening. I was packing to move. I think it might’ve actually been the goodbye scene. I think that was our last scene when Kendra and Carter flew off from the team. Because it had been something that we had talked about for a while, me leaving the show, it was just like, “This is what is supposed to happen. This feel fine.” I was like, “OK, I’m sad to be leaving you guys and sad to be leaving Kendra for now… or forever, who knows?” It was a good sense of closure and exactly what it should’ve been, I think.

Do you think it’s fitting that she went off to take time to be with Carter?
I have a lot of opinions about whether or not they’ll actually stay together. I do believe that, in some capacity, they’re going to have to be in each other’s lives. I don’t know necessarily that it’ll have to be a romantic one. They’re the only two people in the world who have shared this much and have this much knowledge together. Who else can she go to and be like, “Hey, remember back in 1742?” I just feel like without Carter, it’s going to be a really lonely life for her.

Without Savage around, are the Hawks still immortal?
That is another thing, yeah. I wonder about that too. That would be really interesting if this was their last lifetime. How do they know, honestly, until one of them dies? Or both of them die and they don’t come back. It’s impossible to know.

What’s next for you?
Like I mentioned before, I started a production company about the same time that I started Legends, so a lot of stuff got put on hold. But I’m now currently writing a musical, and it’s titled Anything But Love, and I have two co-writers, Arianna Taxman and Arielle O’Keefe, and we are actually putting up a concert version. The show is in its infancy stages at the moment. We’re putting up a concert version at 54 Below in New York on June 26 at 9:30. Plug, plug, plug, plug, plug. [Laughs.] I’m really excited to be writing, I’m really exciting to be producing and directing. I’m wearing a lot of hats right now. I love being challenged, and I love learning new things. I’m learning a completely different side of my craft, which is really, really a wonderful experience. I’m also in talks for a web series right now that I’m writing. There’s a lot of stuff on the burner that we’ll see in the next couple of months where those things are leading.

What do you think Legends taught you that you can implement in future projects?
Endless amount of lessons were learned filming Legends. I learned a lot about writing and I also learned a lot about being a leader, because I got to watch a lot of people leading, and I got to talk to a lot of the writers and learn about that process. That was very helpful for me. That’s going to help inform the way that I start crafting my pieces now.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow finally rid the world of Vandal Savage in the season finale, but it came at a price.

After a brief pit stop in 2016, the team realized their mission was not finished, so they re-teamed with Rip (Arthur Darvill) to take down Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) once and for all. However, Vandal aimed to use Thanagarian technology to basically go back in time and rewrite history. That technology, by the way, is what turned Vandal, Kendra (Ciara Renée), and Carter (Falk Hentschel) immortal.

Ultimately, the team would need to kill Vandal across three different time periods — which they succeeded in doing, but not everyone decided to stick with the team. In the wake of Vandal’s death, Kendra and Carter decided to start their life free from fear. While the Legends lost a part of the team, they gained a new ally. Patrick J. Adams’ mysterious DC Comics character was revealed to be Hourman, who crash-landed in another version of the Waverider. This version of Hourman is Rex Tyler. In the comics, Rex discovered a drug that basically gave him superhuman powers for one hour at a time.

“He’s not just Hourman, he announces himself as a member of the Justice Society of America,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells EW. “We’re planting a big flag that season 2 of Legends will not only feature the Legends of Tomorrow, but also the JSA.”

However, Guggenheim is shy to say which members of the JSA will be joining him next season, especially when it comes to a familiar JSA member from the comics: The Flash (portrayed in the hit CW series by Grant Gustin). “I can’t go spoiling stuff they’re doing on Flash,” Guggenheim says. “Phil Klemmer, Geoff Johns, Dan Evans, and I sat down in a room at DC with a list, and it’s a long list, of the members of the JSA. One of the more fun afternoons I’ve had recently is sitting down and actually composing our JSA lineup, our perfect JSA lineup. That was a blast to do.”

As for axing off this season’s big bad, “It was always our plan to kill Vandal,” Guggenheim says. “We gave ourselves the out of, ‘Well, if we come up with a really good idea, then we don’t necessarily have to kill him,’ but it felt right. For us, the thing that was the discovery was the way we killed him was different from our original plan — not with whether or not to kill Vandal, but how we decided to kill Vandal.”

The Legends and the Justice Society will have their hands full next season, as Guggenheim promises an evil bigger threat in store. “The beauty part of it is we already know how we’re going to top it,” Guggenheim says. “I will say literally the threat that Vandal Savage posed it’s going to seem small in comparison. That’s not even hyperbole, and you know I’m prone to hyperbole. People will be saying ‘Vandal who?’ by the time the big bad of season 2 is fully explored or fully revealed.”

- "Legends of Tomorrow" añadirá a una nueva 'Vixen' como personaje regular en la S2:

La 'Waverider' contará con un familiar nuevo pasajero cuando "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" regrese para su segunda temporada el próximo otoño.

La CW ha revelado a TV Insider que el personaje de 'Vixen' se unirá al spin-off de Arrow-Flash como personaje regular. Sin embargo, va a verse un poco diferente de la 'Vixen' con la que los fans se encontraron cuando Megalyn E.K. apareció como estrella invitada en "Arrow" la pasada temporada como 'Mari McCabe', la vigilante de Detroit imbiída con los poderes animalísticos de un tótem sagrado.

Desafortunadamente, la demandada actriz —quien acaba de terminar "Damien" de A&E' esta pasada primavera y que ya está trabajando en Atlanta en la comedia "Step Sisters" con Eden Sher ("The Middle") y Matt McGorry ("How to Get Away With Murder")— no está disponible para el papel ya que está pendiente de algunos posibles próximos proyectos de cine.

El actor Nick Zano se unirá al elenco de la S2 de "Legends Of Tomorrow" como uno de los nuevos personajes regulares de la próxima temporada.

Interpretará al 'Dr. Nate Heywood', un historiador cuyo abuelo era 'Commander Steel', uno de los miembros de la 'Justice Society of America'.

En los cómics, Nate se convierte en 'Steel/Citizen Steel', un anitiguo miembro de la 'Justice League of America'.

Los productores de la serie de la CW están siendo ambiguos sobre si Nate seguirá los pasos super heróicos de su abuelo pero, dada la naturaleza de superhéroes de la serie, parece casi seguro.

TEl personaje original de los cómics de Steel, Henry Heywood/Commander Steel fue introducido por primera vez en 1978. No debe de confundirse con otro personaje más conocido de DC, 'John Henry Irons', que se convirtió en un personaje influenciado por Supermán y que se llamó a sí mismo 'Steel' tras la famosa historia de "La muerte de Supermán" de principios de los '90s. i

Tras el original Commander Steel, Henry Heywood, el segundo Steel, su nieto Hank Heywood III, fue introducido en 1984 como miembro de la 'Justice League' que al final fue asesinado. Eso lleva a Nate, el tercer Steel, introducido en 2007 y también bisnieto del original. En los cómics, Nate es una antigua estrella de football universitario que se rompió la rodilla y se convirtió en adicto a los analgésicos. La serie de la CW "Legends of Tomorrow" acaba de encontrar a una nueva recluta para sus personajes regulares.

La actriz Maisie Richardson-Sellers, quien fue regular en "Of Kings and Prophets", fue estrella invitada en "The Originals" y tuvo un pequeño papel en "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", se ha unido al elenco de la S2 como la nueva 'Vixen'.

Esta versión es la abuela de la 'Vixen' que protagoniza la serie animada de la CW Seed y que hizo una aparición en vivo en "Arrow" la pasada temporada (ambas interpretadas por Megalyn Echikunwoke).

Esperad a que el equipo de "Legends of Tomorrow" cruce su camino con un Albert Einstein de circa-1942 en la Season 2, pero se ven desilusionados cuando descubran que el legendario científico es un sarcástico y brusco mujeriego. No es necesario decir, que prueba ser muy problemático cuando ellos intentan salvar su vida.

When the CW's lineup of superhero shows returns in the fall, their number will have increased. "Supergirl" has zoomed over from CBS to join "Arrow," "Flash" and "Legends of Tomorrow" on the network, increasing the shared superhero universe to four concurrent series. And, as is tradition with the shows, the fall will see a crossover between the quartet of shows.

In an interview with MovieFone, "Legends of Tomorrow" star Caity Lotz expressed her excitement about the upcoming crossovers. "Yes, crossovers are what I'm most excited for, just because the potential of that! I want to go on 'The Flash.' I want everybody to come on to our show," said Lotz, who plays the White Canary on "Legends."

Lotz also has two specific characters she wants to fight. "I want to see, like, especially with Earth-2 on 'Flash,' I think it'd be really cool to kind of see [White Canary's sister] the Black Siren, which is Katie Cassidy. I want to see Katie Cassidy and Danielle Panabaker's evil alter egos. I want to go head-to-head with them."

The actress also wouldn't mind seeing the Earth-2 alter-ego of her all-action assassin character, Sara Lance. "I'd be, like, a librarian, or I knit scarves. That's what Sara does in Earth-2."

There is one development Lotz teased about season two of "Legends of Tomorrow," and it involves Sara Lance's love life. "I think Sara might get a new girlfriend!" While further details about Lance's potential romance have not been revealed, Lotz did touch on White Canary's ex Nyssa al Ghul. While actress Katrina Law will be appearing on a new show, "Training Day," Lotz says Law "worked it in her deal so that she could come and see us!"

"Legends of Tomorrow" returns to the CW for its second season on Thursday, October 13 at 8 PM ET.
