When The CW re-make of the cult classic TV series “Beauty and the Beast” premieres Thursday night (Oct. 11), you can take an educated guess as to which lead Kristin Kreuk will be playing.

The 29-year-old Canadian-born actress, who rose to fame as “Smallville’s” Lana Lang, is now the object of affection of a different kind of legendary heroic figure. In "Beast," Kreuk's character Catherine Chandler is re-imagined as a street smart police detective determined to uncover the secrets behind her mother’s murder, with the aid of a genetically altered mystery man named Vincent (Jay Ryan).

Kreuk settled in for a chat about the allure of reinventing the much beloved series, which itself was a contemporary spin on the enduring fairy tale.

Have you seen the original series?

I've only seen a little bit. I missed it – I didn't have TV growing up. I love the romance between them and I love what I saw as his goodness. I'm very interested in morality, and so that to me is really important. How is it that we become moral and understand good and bad, and how do we overcome our impulse towards violence?

Are you glad you're not visiting the sewers to see Vincent, like in the original?

In many ways I'm glad that we're not in the sewer! That's helpful.

Does Catherine have her own dark side?

I think the whole concept is that we all do. It's not like a dark side…I think there's things about ourselves that we want to hide, that we think are bad – sometimes they are destructive and sometimes they are violent. Even if it's something you say to me and I get pissed and I say something mean to you, that's violent. So for Catherine, she's got a lot of stuff that she's buried down and her impulse towards revenge, which is a violent act and isn't okay. She understands it's her impulse towards stopping these people that hurt her mom – she believes that somehow that's going to make it better. But Vincent in some ways knows that it won't, that no matter how much you exact justice in the world it won't make the feeling go away. That is her darkness.

You’ve received a formal blessing from the original Catherine, Linda Hamilton?

She's been shooting in Toronto doing a guest spot on "Lost Girl," and she actually signed photos for Jay and I both, and it was unexpected and surprising and wonderful. I got it on our first day of work, and it's in my trailer, and it feels really cool to have her know about what we're doing and wishing us well.

What's it been like playing a cop?

Tough, for me. I don't walk in to a room with an authoritative stance. I tend to be a little more submissive, in a sense, even though I think I have a certain amount of strength. So it's tough for me to play authority without feeling uncomfortable. I love it because it's such a challenge for me to go out there and take that position.

What's it like working with your Beast, Jay Ryan?

Jay and I get along really well. It's so wonderful. I feel very comfortable with him. I feel like we giggle a lot and there's an easiness to it. So we have a good friendship developing already and that makes it so easy.

How did you develop that slow-burn romantic tension which is at the core of the show?

I think that's just the nature of how the two characters relate, based on their own individual struggles. Catherine doesn't want to acknowledge that she might feel vulnerable in that way. So, she's making it about the case. She's making it about, 'We need to just figure out what happened to my mom and this will be over.' She really doesn't want to connect to that vulnerability. It's uncomfortable for her.

What do you like about telling stories in these genres, as you also did in “Smallville?”.

I don't think I realized this, but you can play with metaphor in a really intense way. You can look at Beast as a beast, someone who actually physically turns into a beast, which is a great metaphor. Whereas I think when you're more straight drama that's very realistic, you explore those concepts still, but you don't get to amp it up to the degree that you do when you have something that's supernatural where your metaphors can be really fun.

- La Nueva Beauty and the Beast reinventa la favorita de culto de los '80 (msn.com):
La Nueva Beauty and the Beast reinventa la favorita de culto de los '80
Por Sean Plummer, 10 de Octubre del 2012

He was only six when the original Beauty and the Beast debuted on CBS back in 1987, but New Zealand actor Jay Ryan has distinct memories of it from his childhood.

“I used to watch it when I came home from school,” he says. “My nana would always watch it so I sat down and watched it too. But I really liked that show. And Ron Perlman was just incredible, y’know? I mean, he won awards, and he was acting through all that rubber.”

Who knew that 25 years later Ryan would be in Toronto filming a new version of his childhood favourite, playing the Perlman role? Just to remind those of you who do not remember: the 1980s Beauty and the Beast was a romantic drama which cast Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) as Catherine Chandler, a New York lawyer who falls under the protection of Vincent (Perlman, Hellboy, TV’s Sons of Anarchy), a noble man-beast who lives in the tunnels beneath the city, after Catherine is attacked by thugs. The show lasted three seasons and became a cult favourite.

Designed as a reimagining of that show, the new Beauty and the Beast stars Vancouver-born actress Kristen Kreuk (TV’s Smallville) as Catherine “Cat” Chandler, a New York homicide detective haunted by the murder of her mother nine years earlier. The then-teenaged Catherine was saved from her mother’s assailants by a mysterious, animalistic figure who turns out to be Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan, Terra Nova). A doctor who enlisted in the army after his brothers were killed in 9/11, Vincent was reported killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Now back in New York, Vincent takes a special interest in Catherine, and they forge a bond after she tracks him down during the course of a murder investigation. But Vincent has a secret: he turns into a powerful beast whenever he becomes enraged.

Given his love of the original (“that romantic element and the sort of mythology of it was really cool”), Ryan was initially reluctant to sign up for the new series, worried it would simply retread old ground. “I didn’t want to remake that show. Because why fix something that’s not broke?”

Fortunately he found the pilot script “quite plausible in a heightened sense” and liked the series’ proposed mix of police procedural and mythology. “It makes for an interesting show, ‘cause there’s lots to go on.”

The chance to play a character with two very different sides to him also held a big appeal.

“I get to play Vincent, who’s trying to regain his humanity and be the man he used to be, and sort of indulge in society again and forge a relationship with a woman and do all of these everyday things that people take for granted, and then him trying to quash this demon inside him, which comes out and puts everyone around him at risk, including himself.

“And I come from a very physical background as an actor; I did a lot of physical theatre and stuff like that. It’s fun for me to play this creature; throw my whole body in to it. And it feels quite theatrical and fantastical to do that.”

On that note, while we do not get to see much of the transformed Beast to start with, Ryan promises (and hopes) that later episodes will reveal more of the full-on creature. After all, Ryan’s Beast makeup – which consists of eight pieces (plus teeth and contacts) and covers his neck, face, and half his torso – takes up to five hours to apply, and Ryan often finds himself in it for up to sixteen hours at a stretch.

It is perhaps no surprise then that the Kiwi turns into a bit of a beast himself when suited up as his character’s darker half.

“I’ve been told by Kristin and other cast [that] I have this alter ego that comes out when I’m the Beast, and I turn into a joker basically. I think I can get away with certain things and saying certain things because I’ve got this thing on my face.”

Speaking of his co-star Kreuk, Ryan attributes their good working relationship to their shared work ethic and a mutual commitment to making each script work.

“We’ve definitely got the same headspace, and she’s great to work with,” he says. “We’ve got a good chemistry, I guess. We’re both present and working with each other. And she’s fun. I can make her laugh, so that’s good. She finds me funny.”

Currently based in Toronto for the duration of filming, Ryan has quickly grown to appreciate his adopted home.

“I love it. I love the temperament of the people; it’s very similar to Australians. And the city has kind of a similar feel to Melbourne, which is my home base. It feels quite comfy and warm here, even though it’s going to be frickin’ cold soon.”

- ‘Beauty and the Beast’ sobre las heridas internas (torontosun.com):
‘Beauty and the Beast’ sobre las heridas internas
Por Bill Harris 10 de Octubre, 2012 12:59 PM EDT

It's either courageous or cowardly.

The new Beauty and the Beast, which debuts Thursday, Oct. 11 on CW and Showcase, is lacking a beast in the traditional physical sense.

The beauty is Kristin Kreuk, that's easy. But the beast is hunky Jay Ryan with a small scar on his cheek.

Ah, but he's a beast within. Well, sometimes. Occasionally. When he's not helping and protecting people. And his beastly tendencies aren't his fault, anyway, so back off, okay?

Hmmm. Is this approach courageous as it acknowledges the vast majority of real-life beasts aren't threatening on the outside?

Or is it cowardly in that it wouldn't risk having a main character look like a beast because TV audiences in 2012 - especially young viewers - would balk?

The creators are trying to sell the former.

"Most of the beasts in our lives don't look like an actual beast," co-executive producer Jennifer Levin says.

"They are sometimes charming. There's something that might draw us to them. So there is that thing of what happens when you fall in love with a beast.

"It was beastliness on the inside that was more interesting to us."

So this is not your parents' Beauty and the Beast, a.k.a. the 1980s version with Linda Hamilton and a truly beastly Ron Perlman.

"The romance is still there and the themes are still there," Kreuk says. "But it's very much based in our society, what could be happening right now."

In this new foray, Catherine "Cat" Chandler (Kreuk) is a homicide detective haunted by her tragic past, in which she witnessed the murder of her mother. The teenaged Cat might have been killed, too, but something - or someone - saved her.

Years later, while investigating a case, Cat uncovers fingerprints that lead to a doctor named Vincent Keller (Ryan). He reportedly was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2002.

But might Vincent have been a victim of clandestine U.S. military experimentation? And if he's still alive, is it possible that Vincent and Cat have a mysterious connection?

Ryan advises not to judge Beauty and the Beast too harshly by its setup-heavy pilot episode.

"He (Vincent) is actually more like Jekyll and Hyde, and as you go through the series, you'll notice that more as it develops," Ryan says.

"It's almost like two people inside this one character. The beast is more like a serial killer, and Vincent is trying to suppress him throughout.

"You don't get a lot of that in the pilot, but as we go along, that will become more apparent, and the beast will become much more dangerous."

The question remains, will viewers accept a Beauty and the Beast in which the beast doesn't look like a beast?

Hey, vampires are sexy now, so you never know.

'Beauty and the Beast': Jay Ryan Puede ser un Animal, pero es de Corazón Romántico

If you're hoping the latest version of "Beauty and the Beast" is going to be a tale as old as time, think again. The CW's version is dark and serious with a modern, military-experiment twist. Jay Ryan's Beast isn't furry or lion-like; rather, he's all our nightmares brought to life in one animalistic superhuman.

HuffPost TV spoke with Ryan over the phone (it isn't normal for me to pass up the opportunity to chat face-to-face with a handsome, talented actor, but not even the New Zealand-born actor could get me into my car for a two-hour -- one way! -- bumper-to-bumper drive into the city), and not only did we agree on where we want the series to go, but Ryan also revealed what it's like filming in Toronto (disguised as New York, of course) and how he's really pushing for more romance on the action-drama.

What's it like filming in Toronto?
This is my home base, at the moment. Obviously we color and paste the city to make it look like New York. It's very similar in Toronto, with the rundown old factories and brick places, so it's not too hard to make it look like New York City. But any references to New York City landmarks, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, we have a special effects team that paints that stuff in.

I was trying to figure out where the warehouse is, where Vincent and J.T. live.
That warehouse ... it's one of our grossest sets to shoot at. That building itself is an old chemical factory, so it's actually a high-risk set.

Oh, good! How lucky for you.
I know! It's not great, but it looks fantastic on camera.

How many episodes have been shot?
We're up to episode six at the moment, so we just hit halfway through the series [season]. And it's really heating up. The show has strong procedural elements, but there's also this mythology genre that we have, of the beast and his background, which is my half of the show, I guess. The mythology really starts to heat up in the second half of the series [season], and mixes in with that procedural element a lot more. You learn a lot more about Vincent's back story, where he comes from, and also this mutation, this beast within him that's the product of a military experiment. You learn this thing could possibly be curable, but is also mutating in him.

He's lulled into this false sense of hope, that he can be a normal person in society with Catherine (Kristin Kreuk) present, and he starts to believe there's this woman that loves him and he can be what he used to be. But at the end of the day, you can't love a beast, especially one that's murderous on the side.

We get why Catherine is the way she is in the pilot. And, to a certain extent, we know how the Beast comes about. But do we learn more about Vincent's past, what he was like before the experiment? Family, friends, lovers?
I've really been pushing the writers to explore that because that, for me, is interesting. And because he has such a large past, I think that is just as mysterious as a soldier of crime in a procedural. Vincent has a lot of turmoil going on inside him, and to deal with that, to work through that, you have to discover who he used to be.

As he starts looking more for answers to this cure/antidote, he starts flashing back and Vincent, on his own procedural, I guess, is trying to find someone who knows the cure. He returns to his old neighborhood in New York City and because he's stamped dead on a piece of paper by the military, he starts running into people that may recognize him, or may know his father and his similarities to his father, so all of his old life starts to surface again. It becomes really interesting. And then we start to see clues to whether there are other beasts out there that were part of his platoon that had this experiment done to them. Is he not the only one who was able to escape? There's some great stuff that is about to be explored, and that hits in about episode five or six, just as the audience thinks Catherine and Vincent can have this connection and move forward, up come these barriers and walls.

I absolutely loved the pilot. On The CW, you're paired with "Vampire Diaries" but your show reminds me of another CW show, "Nikita." Strong, young characters, lots of action, based on a previous concept ... I used to watch the original. Did you?
I did. I watched it as a child. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up and after school they would be watching it and I was really drawn into it. The technicalities of it, the way that Ron Perlman, he was in this prosthetic the whole time, but he could show love through his voice and his eyes. It's a bit of an honor to take on this role even though it's nothing like anything that's been done before. I think people who are expecting a remake of the original series will be disappointed, because it isn't.

I love the modern spin. The military/scientific experiment gives the story so many places to go, and it can be told so many different ways.
For me, it gives it a plausibility. I could believe that this could happen, in this world that we live in. I like that stuff, everything that's being swept under the carpet, the mysterious angle of who Vincent is. He's just a guy trying to regain his humanity and deal with his demons. It brings up the themes of this wild beast within us all and whatever that is, to our viewers, hopefully they can connect to that through Vincent.

What's it like playing such a physical role?
I love it. That's where I got my fundamentals in this industry, through physical theatre and creating European theatre-style mask work, so this kind of character is brilliant for me because I play the exterior of Vincent, but then I have to play this thing, this creature that comes out of him. The DNA of the strongest, fastest animals in the world have been collected and inserted into these soldiers to create these beasts, and it's taking all these elements of animals and trying to put them into the character of the beast, which you will slowly be fed as we go through the series. We give a little more away in each episode. I have a thousand cuts and bruises from playing this wild animal, but at the end of the day, I just try and give as much as I can to the director and the studio.

Do you prefer acting out Vincent's animalistic characteristics, or would you rather rely on makeup and special effects?
Well, the makeup is just a by-product. For me, the beast is an internal turmoil. The makeup is cool because it's an element the viewers want to see, they want to see what the beast looks like. It also helps with Catherine's turmoil. The original theme of "Beauty and the Beast" is don't judge a book by its cover. Love what's inside. So you've got to have that beast exterior; it's an important part of the character. People might find it shocking that the beast doesn't always look like a beast. But Vincent has this big, red scar that runs down his cheek, and that, for me, represents the beast within that's cracking on the surface trying to get out. To keep that reminder there to the audience of what he's trying to shove back down.

Do you prefer playing Vincent as Vincent, or the beast?
I prefer Vincent as the whole character and what's going on inside of him. It's like playing two characters, the two extremes of someone's personality or moral compass. All characters that I play have the good and the bad, and for me, this is just the extreme. You can't have one without the other and we all have this wild part of us which we keep hidden and maybe only show in our darkest moments, or to our most loved ones. For me, it's the complete gamut of the character.

The pilot is dark and I don't expect there to be too many light moments, at least not in the beginning. But I love Vincent's relationship with J.T. (Austin Basis). It shows a tiny bit of his lighter side, which I suppose is mostly Austin's character, but it does give Vincent more shades of normal. It's nice to see. Do you like those scenes?
I agree. I really love those scenes because it shows who Vincent used to be, and what is at the heart of him, the real Vincent, because J.T. is the only one he trusts, who's been in his life for a long time. J.T. has such great lines, he's kind of like the forboding mother character with Vincent. J.T. and Vincent are also like husband and wife, they've been in a marriage for so long, cooped up in this one place, they know each other so well, there's this love bickering that goes on, so I do love those scenes. It is quite tense, but we are searching for more of that lightness and touch.

In the original, it was always Vincent dropping in on Catherine's home, but I'm assuming it will be the other way around here. When does the romantic element pick up? It was touched upon in the pilot, but when will it get good?
There's this whole courting thing that goes on between Vincent and Catherine. First, they need to trust each other. Catherine's a cop, and at the heart, Vincent, to her, could be a serial killer. She puts people like him away, and he's on the run from people like her. There's this real push and pull, there's this undeniable chemistry and connection between them, but it's a long, slow burn.

Just as Vincent gets lulled into this false sense that he is OK to enter this relationship with Catherine, the beast takes over again and puts up barriers. That's my favorite element from the original series -- the romance. So I'm really pushing for the writers to continue that and have it come forth a bit more. And because Vincent's on the run, he can't use technology and Facebook and Twitter, or text her or call her. So we're bringing back that old way of courting with secret notes and secret whispers, pebbles on the window, Juliet/Romeo styles. So I want all that stuff to surface as well. There's so much on this show that sometimes it gets pushed out. But I will keep fighting for the romantic element.
