The Flash: Barry & Co. finalmente se enfrentan a Wells
Por Natalie Abrams 28 Abril, 2015
It’s the showdown The Flash fans have been waiting for—and this time, it won’t be erased by time travel.
During Tuesday’s episode of The Flash, Barry (Grant Gustin) and the rest of his team make a play to confront Wells (Tom Cavanagh) for his role in Nora Allen’s death. Will Wells fall into their trap? EW caught up with executive producer Andrew Kreisberg to get the scoop on the episodes leading up to the finale, in which Iris (Candice Patton) also finally learns a big secret.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Now that Team Flash has found Wells’ lair, what does that confrontation look like?
ANDREW KREISBERG: The whole thrust of [this] week’s episode is Barry having enough information about Wells to realize that he can force a confession out of Wells—that he killed his mom and got his dad out of prison. That really becomes Barry’s overriding concern. Those people who thought that the events of episode 15, when the timeline was altered, was a full and total reset, and that those events didn’t matter, are going to be proven very wrong. It turns out that the key in getting Wells to confess lies is Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) ability to remember that alternate timeline.
Are we going to find out how and why Cisco is able to tap into that alternate timeline?
You will find that out this season, but not necessarily [this] week
Many fans suspect it has something to do with his future in the comics. Is that possible?
I would say that’s definitely a possibility.
In the comics, Eobard Thawne was fixated on Iris. Will we see a little bit of that on the show?
As always, we take our cue from the comics, but we don’t always necessarily follow the stories perfectly. People always ask how closely will it align with the comics, but it’s not as simple as when you’re adapting Game of Thrones, where you’re following one story. With the comics, you’re following multiple stories with multiple writers. People are constantly retconned and revised, backstories are revised and motivations are changed. In some ways, it’s good for us because it allows us to cherry-pick the best parts that we feel work for us. There’s definitely a confrontation between the Reverse Flash and Iris coming up, which is fairly exciting. It’s not necessarily the Iris fixation that was in that run of the comics.
Is it possible that Harrison Wells is collecting all of his imprisoned metahumans’ powers?
Interesting theory. [Laughs]
What can you tease about the upcoming interaction between Eddie (Rick Cosnett) and Eobard?
The fact that they have the same name is not a coincidence. It’s something that we’ve known about since the very beginning of the series. All of that stuff is starting to come to fruition. For those people who, just like Eddie, wondered why the Reverse Flash didn’t kill him in episode 9 when he killed every other cop in that room, you’re going to get the answer to that.
I hear Barry and Iris will finally have a heart-to-heart. How will Iris feel upon learning Barry’s secret? I have to imagine she’ll be pretty pissed off at not just Barry, but Joe (Jesse L. Martin) and Eddie as well.
The reason she’s not pissed at Eddie will become apparent, which is kind of interesting. But she’s definitely pissed at Barry and Joe. Keeping people in the dark for their own protection is a trope for these shows. Sometimes, especially on Arrow, we let that go on for too long. We’re trying to correct that on this show. We’re definitely building toward Iris finding out in this first season, not just in the finale, and her having a reaction to it that’s quite normal.
I don’t think Joe and Barry were trying to be rude or disrespectful. They thought what they were doing was right and was the smart thing to do. As Joe said, even if he had his initial reservations about keeping her away from all of this, once they found out that Wells was the villain, he didn’t want her coming to S.T.A.R. Labs and coming to hang out with him and getting closer to danger. As always with these things, there’s going to be emotional fallout—but it’ll end up bringing people closer together.
Iris is the last person not really in the know. So what does season 2 look like if everyone knows Barry’s secret?
There will be new people introduced on the show next year, and they won’t know. It’s funny because we read the comments and see some people are upset that Iris doesn’t know. For us, keeping this secret is the least interesting aspect of all of these shows. Especially on Arrow, there’s such a freedom to it now that everybody is in on this secret, everyone can just have real conversations. Everyone is on board, so everyone can be talking about everything that they should be talking about. That’s not to say those devices weren’t important and helpful in the earlier seasons, especially about episode 18 of the first season of Arrow, where Laurel’s (Katie Cassidy) journey—even though she didn’t know Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) secret—in that episode really helped him. For now, it’s better that everybody knows and everybody can talk about it and be on the same page. The false jeopardy of “we have to keep this secret” fades away, and it allows you to come up with more grounded, more organic problems for your characters to have to face.
You really seemed to be laying more of the groundwork for Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) to become Killer Frost last week, when she talked about how much Wells has changed her life. A lot of people expect it will come as a result of Captain Cold’s (Wentworth Miller) gun, but what’s going to surprise us about that?
We didn’t name these characters Caitlin Snow and Cisco Ramon on a whim. Their characters certainly have trajectories and we have thoughts on that. I, as always, ask the audience to trust us on these things. Some of these things are going to take longer than people suspect, and some shorter. It is very interesting to read all the theories out there. Every once in a while, somebody does come close to the truth, but people will just have to see.
What can you tease for the Rogues teaming up?
The episode is entitled “Rogue Air.” The team discovers that the pipeline is no longer secure, and they have to move all the metahumans that are there. Especially in the last few episodes, you want to nod back to the entire season. In season 5 of Doctor Who, they open an episode with seeing all the characters [that] the Doctor and Amy had hooked up with over the course of the year. In a way, this reminds me of that, where we get to see the Weather Wizard, Peekaboo, The Mist, Deathbolt and Rainbow Raider again. It’s fun.
And Grodd is coming back.
Yeah, we decided to put Grodd in the episode “Grodd Lives.” It just felt right. [Laughs] It’s crazy. There was an early episode of the original Flash series where Tina’s husband was a wolf man-type thing. I remember thinking back then, “Man, I wish that had been Grodd.” So to sit here and watch these dailies is amazing. When you watch the dailies and the first cuts before the effects are all added in, you do have to think, “Okay, I know this is going to look amazing.” Because at that point you’re looking at very crude animation, or sometimes a snap shot of the storyboard. Or worse, it’s a black screen that says what you’re going to see, and you have to imagine how great it’s going to be. What’s so interesting about the “Grodd Lives” stuff is you’re watching this episode, and everyone is acting with nothing. Grodd is in this episode, and it’s the first time we have a fully rendered CG character walking amongst our guys. That episode is going to be amazing. General Eiling (Clancy Brown) returns in it.
Will we see any new Flash tricks before the end of the season?
You’re going to see a couple of new Flash tricks over the next couple of episodes, one in particular that is right out of the comics. He’s going to learn how to do it for the first time in episode 20, and put to really good use in episode 22.

Candice is a talker! Her meaty answers forced me to break this up into a two-parter. I must say, if I'm going to be forced into something, I'm glad it was by Candice! How do you like that pic she took just for this interview?!
So many words I don't even have room for more intro. Be sure to watch for Part II where Candice discusses Rizzoli & Isles and The Flash fanfiction!
Tell us about your audition for The Flash.
My first audition was in December 2013 for the role of Iris West. I first read with our amazing casting director David Rapport. He liked my audition and asked me to come back later in the day with a different shirt. (I was wearing a plaid blue shirt and I guess I looked like too much like a farm girl). I read later that day for David Nutter (the director) and a few producers, I believe. I bombed. I forgot a line, something about "Channing Tatum" and had to start over. From that point, nerves took over. That was the end of it as far as I knew and I was pretty bummed about it.
I didn't hear back until late January 2014. They wanted me to come back in and read with Grant Gustin. I remember seeing Jordin Sparks in waiting room. In the audition during my first reading with Grant I remember I tickled him. I don't know why I did, but I just had the urge to tickle him.
I read for the studio, then the network and remember being sick to my stomach with nerves before the last audition. Hours went by, I didn't hear anything. Then I had to go audition for another pilot. Still hours went by and didn't hear anything. Then, after not hearing anything all day, I was started thinking it was over again. Finally, the call came in from my managers. It was around 6pm on a Friday. I fell to my knees and the first call I made after that was to my parents.
Is it nerve wracking never knowing where your next paycheck is coming from? What odd jobs did you hold in between roles?
Luckily I didn't have many "day jobs" while trying to find success in Los Angeles. When I first moved to LA, I worked at Bubba Gump Restaurant for about two days. I didn't even make it through training before I quit. I just didn't care to memorize all the different types of shrimp.
I also worked at Pink Berry. I lasted there a bit longer. Maybe a year. Maybe less. One day I finally left and decided I would try to make ends meet solely on acting. I worked steadily guest starring and doing commercials and I lived meagerly off of residuals for years.
What's the rundown of your day on The Flash set?
I find out the day before sometimes pretty late what my call time is for the next day. I know what time I'll be at work, but I don't know how long I will be there. It depends on how many scenes I'm shooting that day, how complicated the scenes are, how fast the director works, etc.
I self-drive to set. First stop when I'm on set is my trailer. I like to set my stuff down, and lock the door. Be in my own space for a few minutes. Answer some fan mail, set the lighting just right, turn on my fireplace (it's cold in Canada). Then I'm off to hair and makeup.
I usually stay away from Craft Services (food), so I'm not picking. If I'm hungry between meal times, I will have someone go get something for me from Craft Services (my usual: veggie plate - cucumbers, grape tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, snap peas, avocado and hummus. Having someone get my usual go to healthy snacks keeps me from lingering around the crafty table and picking up that cinnamon roll I really want, but don't need.
I learn my lines in a few different ways. A lot of my dialogue sticks with me in a general sort of way when I read the entire script for the first or second time. Then when I get the shooting schedule I have a better idea of what scenes are shooting when. I then will focus on those that are coming up first. I don't worry too much about learning lines per se. The memorization is the easy part for me, usually. For me it more about working on the context, back story, intention, motivation, etc. Once that's in place, the lines come pretty naturally.
What's the difference between shooting in Vancouver vs. Los Angeles?
Difference between shooting in LA and Vancouver is mostly the weather. It rains a lot here and it's cold. We aren't put up in a hotel in Vancouver. We've essentially moved to Vancouver because we shoot nine months out of the year. July - April. I visit LA very often, however. Whenever I get a few days off. Honestly, it keeps me happy and sane. At the end of the day, I'm a California girl and I miss it all the time. Sunshine, and good vibes. It's hard traveling back and forth all the time, going through customs, having different sim cards for phones, using different currencies, not having access to reasonably priced wine . The list goes on. Vancouver is work, California is home. But, I am grateful for what both provide me.
Who have you brought to visit the set of The Flash?
Only my parents have visited set! They came to set for one day, and I don't know if they enjoyed it because I think they kept feeling like they were in the way. Maybe during season two they will feel more comfortable eating from catering and crafty and walking around set.
I introduced them to the cast and and some of the crew, had them watch a scene during one of the crossover episodes with Arrow cast. I think they were surprised and maybe even bored by how long it takes to shoot one scene. I would love for more friends and family to visit, but again, I'm in Vancouver, and it's somewhat of an expense to get here.
You recently did some work for Maxim. What made you say 'yes' to that offer?
Maxim reached out to me. At first I wasn't sure about doing it, but my manager made a good case for it. My reasons for turning it down were based more in fear than anything else, and I decided that wasn't a good enough reason to not do things anymore. As long as the photos were classy and sexy at the same time, I shouldn't let fear stop me. And hey, I figured, I will never be this young and look like this ever again.
As someone who usually hates photo shoots (I can be obnoxiously critical of myself), I am really glad I did it! It was my first magazine feature and it was top to bottom an awesome day and shoot in Malibu. I was very happy with the outcome and I hope I get to do it again.

The Flash Iris Knows Barry Secret
Our long national nightmare is over: Iris West knows the truth about The Flash‘s identity. And dare we say, Candice Patton is even more excited than her Flash-crushing alter ego to join the club of those “in the know.”
As The CW’s freshman hit speeds toward the May 19 finish line, Patton found a moment to speak with TVLine about proving haters wrong, Iris’ sense of hurt, her feelings for Barry versus Eddie and a finale that is perhaps not what you think it is.
TVLINE | What was your reaction when you saw the script where Iris learns the truth — and that it was going to stick?
I was so relieved. I was relieved for me, and for all of the fans who’ve been waiting so long for Isis to find out. I was relieved for all the haters [Laughs] who just thought Iris was stupid and would never find out. I was extremely excited to film this episode, and then for it to air.
TVLINE | It’s got to be hard to play The Last One to Find Out — did you get any tips from Arrow’s Katie Cassidy?
No, but I probably should have! Because I don’t think I was aware of how difficult it would be to play that kind of character. I just assumed that it’s a part of comic book series — you always have that Lois Lane/Iris West/Laurel Lance character — so it’s necessary, right? And other shows have dragged it out for much, much longer. We were almost afraid that we were going to be revealing it a little too soon. So to see people upset that Iris didn’t know right away, it was a bit frustrating. It was hard to be the last one to know.
TVLINE | What is the world is going through Iris’ head right now, standing there on that walkway?
I think she’s shocked. Hurt. Angry. And now she’s putting everything together, all of those meetings she has had with The Flash on rooftops, at Jitters, and realizing that those conversations were with Barry. Her whole world is kind of upside-down.
TVLINE | Will things slow down enough, so to speak, anytime soon for her and Barry to talk about this?
Yeah, [this week] especially you will see that Iris is actively going to confront Barry about being The Flash and keeping that secret from her — and subsequently, having that same conversation with Joe. These are two men in her life who were supposed to be honest with her. This is the only family that she really has, the people you’re supposed to trust the most, so for them to have been in cahoots…. She’s going to feel very, very angry and betrayed.
TVLINE | As she processesThe Flash Iris Knows Barry Secret this information, will she ultimately be prompted to reconsider her feelings for Barry versus Eddie?
There’s a lot that she’s having to think about — not just her feelings for Barry and for The Flash, but the fact that Eddie is missing and that she loves him. She’s going to continue to be conflicted about her feelings for both men. I mean, we havent seen anything from Eddie except that he’s a good man and he loves Iris and he treats her well, so she’s really in a difficult place. But at the same time, it’s evident to everyone who watches the show that Iris has feelings for Barry that she’s just not ready to deal with.
TVLINE | Are we going to find out exactly why Reverse-Flash took Eddie?
We will find that out by the end of the season — and that’s a really exciting plot point, so I don’t want to give too much away. But we will find out more about why Reverse-Flash took Eddie.
TVLINE | Meanwhile…. Grodd is on the loose this week!
Yeah! Cisco and Barry and Joe kind of go out to track down Grodd. We know that he’s a danger, so those guys go down in the sewers to track him down, and you’ll see Iris kind of join the team and help in her own way, using her skill set to do what she can for the S.T.A.R. Labs crew.
TVLINE | What is her skill set as applies here? What can she bring to the table?
She’s a reporter, so she knows what’s been going on. She knows more about the word on the streets than maybe Caitlin and Cisco, who are more [about] tech. Iris is a little more “in the know”The Flash Iris Knows Barry Secret about what stories have been written about the sewer system, people who have seen Grodd and where they’ve seen him….
TVLINE | Did you get a chance to act opposite any tennis balls-on-strings?
Oh, no. No. I’m waiting for my day with Grodd. Grodd is actually my favorite character on The Flash, so I am just waiting for my moment!
TVLINE | Lastly, what can you tease about the season finale (airing May 19)?
I know it’s typical to say, but the season finale is going to be epic. It’s bigger than 15 (aka the tsunami episode), it’s bigger than 20 (last week’s “The Trap”)…. We wouldn’t leave the season without something where people are going to walk away with their jaws on the floor. And it’s a season finale that a lot of people aren’t expecting. I think people have an idea where we’re going, but I will just say that it’s probably not what you’re thinking.
TVLINE | Is there a cliffhanger, lives in jeopardy…?
All of those things. All of those things, yeah.
TVLINE | Maybe a bit of time travel?
[Makes non-committal noise]
TVLINE | How do I transcribe that? “She shrugs her shoulders”?
“She shrugs her shoulders.” [Laughs]

Candice Patton desearía que Iris pudiera recordar el tiempo borrado también
Por Megan Vick 04 Mayo, 2015
Many "The Flash" fans have taken issue with the fact Cisco (Carlos Valdes) can remember what happened to him in the erased timeline, but Iris (Candice Patton) can't remember kissing Barry (Grant Gustin) and finding out his true identity.
Well, now fans don't have to feel alone. Patton confesses to Zap2it that she wishes Iris would remember what happened on that beach, too.
"I would love to see Iris remembering what happened in the alternate timeline," Patton says. Unfortunately, she continues, "So far, I don't know anything of that happening."
It's an easier pill to swallow now that Iris has figured out Barry is the Flash in the current timeline, but that doesn't simplify their relationship or mean that it's lessened her affection for Eddie (Rick Cosnett).
"We've seen that there are deeper feelings for Barry. It's just not something that Iris is ready to deal with," Patton explains. "She is in a relationship with someone that she very deeply loves and cares about and to throw that away is morally very difficult to do. She loves Eddie. He's a great man to her."
RELATED: Barry teams with Captain Cold to fight The Reverse Flash
Besides, Iris figuring out Barry is the Flash versus him telling her will require them to work on their friendship before those other feelings can be considered.
"[Iris] just wants to know that they can go back to having a relationship where they are honest with each other," Patton says. "That's the relationship they've always had. That's going to be important with her and Barry."
When the two life long best friends get back on track, then things can start to roll out naturally -- but no one should be in a rush.
"She has these feelings for Barry that she doesn't know how to deal with. That relationship with Barry will continue to play out in its own way," Patton says. "You get the impression that Iris and Barry -- it's always been deeper for them."
Whether or not Barry and Iris end up together in a romantic capacity, Patton is as aware as everyone watching that the two have a unique relationship that can't be replicated with any of their other respective partners.
"Even something as visceral as an electric shock says something about them. It's important and it says something about their special connection that they don't have with anyone else," Patton elaborates. "I don't think Iris gets that same feeling when she's with Eddie. I don't think Barry gets that same feeling when he's with anyone else either."

The Flash: Iris confronta a Barry con la verdad
Por Natalie Abrams 04 Mayo, 2015
Barry’s secret is out… to the last person who didn’t know it.
At the end of last week’s episode of The Flash, Iris (Candice Patton) finally discover that Barry (Grant Gustin) is the scarlet speedster… again. But this time, the day won’t be erased and Iris will get to confront her BFF about his alter ego. However, the duo will have bigger issues to tackle after the Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) kidnapped Eddie (Rick Cosnett). Will Team Flash be able to save him? EW caught up with Patton to get scoop on the final episodes of the first season:
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Iris finally realizes that Barry is The Flash. How does she feel about this revelation?
CANDICE PATTON: Well, Candice feels amazing that it’s finally out. [Laughs] Iris is shocked. It’s a huge revelation that her best friend has been keeping such a huge secret from her for so long. It comes out of nowhere that he’s The Flash, and she’s been meeting with him, and he’s been keeping this secret for a very, very long time.
What does the confrontation look like between Iris and Barry?
The thing about Iris is she will give Barry the opportunity to come clean. For the first time, we’re going to see a side of Iris that we’ve never seen—seeing her angry and unleashing her emotions toward Barry, her father and everyone who has been keeping this huge secret from her. It’s a new side to Iris. She’s finally getting a chance to say, “This is not cool and I’m really hurt and angry.” There’s a lot of hurt and anger in Iris in episode 121.
Even with all that anger, does she realize all the things that Barry’s been capable of doing? Is he a little bit off the hook for saving her and the city so many times?
No, because Iris could’ve helped and been a part of that. It’s still a matter of a person not trusting you enough to tell you the truth, and trying to keep you safe rather than believing that you could help keep your own self safe. Obviously she’s enamored with The Flash. She’s probably been his No. 1 fan since Day 1. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that this person she’s been following for so long has been right underneath her.
Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg previously told me that Iris would not get mad at Eddie over him not being honest with her about The Flash. Is that only because he’s been kidnapped by the Reverse Flash?
Well, obviously there’s a lot going on. She finds out that Barry is The Flash, that he’s been keeping this secret, that Joe’s been keeping this secret, and then on top of that, Eddie has gone missing. There’s a huge sense of worry about the safety of her boyfriend, who she loves so much. It’s not that she’s not angry with Eddie, it’s really her father and Barry’s responsibility to tell her the truth, especially about something like this. In a way, Eddie gets off the hook, but I don’t think he’s completely off the hook.
It seems like Iris has had a bit of a crush on The Flash, so how does finding out the truth affect her relationship with Eddie?
The main priority for Iris, and for the entire team, is to keep Eddie safe, find him and save him from Reverse Flash. The issue of Iris having feelings toward The Flash, and also subsequently feelings toward Barry, will continue to be dealt with. That can never just go away. That will be explored in later episodes, for sure.
How will Iris feel when she finds out about the connection between Eddie and Eobard?
She’s extremely shocked that it’s a possibility and what that means for Eddie in her life. Because they could be possibly related, does that mean there’s something evil in him as well?
How involved does she get with the S.T.A.R. Labs team now that she knows about Barry?
She immediately gets involved. Now that she’s allowed access into S.T.A.R. Labs and she knows who The Flash is, she immediately uses her skills to help the team. That’s all Iris has ever wanted to do, to be a part of helping her city. Now that she knows who The Flash is and that she can help him, she’s more than willing to use whatever resources she has to be a part of the team. That’s something I’m really excited about, to see Iris stepping into using her skills as a reporter to help this team that’s already existed for so long.
Is there a conflict of interest for Iris to report on The Flash moving forward?
We have not gotten to that, but that’s a very interesting point to make. I guess it’s a conflict of interest for her to know The Flash and work with The Flash and then to be reporting on him. We’ll probably get to that later. But it’s probably better because she’s going to know him better than anyone. She’s probably the best person to report about The Flash. At the end of the day, Iris is a morally sound person and I don’t think she’d let that get in the way of being a great reporter.
She wouldn’t feel a journalistic duty to tell the world who The Flash is?
Absolutely not, because she knows that The Flash’s secret identity is what’s helping save the city and save people from bad guys. She’s going to do whatever it takes to protect that source, so to speak.
Will we see her have another interaction with the Reverse Flash?
I wouldn’t say a direct interaction with the Reverse Flash. I’ll just leave it at that.
What can you tease about the season finale?
It’s epic. [There are] a lot of familiar faces. It’s going to be epic, that’s all I really can say. I know that’s not much, but we would never leave the season without it being bigger than [episode] 15, bigger than [episode] 20. It’s going to be bigger than both of those.
With so many bad guys on the loose, should we be worried about any of our heroes?
Yeah. Our bad guys this season are pretty big bad guys. There’s a lot of reason to be concerned for everyone at S.T.A.R. Labs, Iris West, Joe, Barry. They make it very difficult to keep everyone safe.

Jesse L. Martin adelanta la Season 1 Finale y la llegada de Grodd
Por Jim Halterman 05 Mayo, 2015 8:00 am
Will Grodd distract The Flash team long enough for Harrison Wells to get away for good?
That's basically where we are at the start of The Flash Season 1 Episode 21, as the big hairy gorilla becomes the main objective for Barry Allen and his squad.
And while the dastardly Wells (who everyone now knows is actually Eobard Thawne) may put some distance between himself and his pursuers, we still have a few episodes to go in The Flash Season 1 for Wells to make a mistake.
For now, the gang has Grodd to contend with - and Jesse L. Martin, who plays Detective Joe West, gave me a preview of what we're going to see.
The actor also talked about Joe's decision to not give Eddie his approval to propose to Iris and whether Joe will let go of the guilt he has over what happened to Barry's parents...
TV Fanatic: In the last episode, Joe didn’t give Eddie his blessing for proposing to Iris. Do you think his opinion can change? Will we see that play out anymore?
Jesse L. Martin: You will definitely see it play out and the truth is Joe’s only going on the information that he has then. You know if you’ve been watching the show this whole season that things turn on a dime and suddenly, I’m changing my mind about it but at the time when Eddie comes to Joe to ask for Iris’s hand, Joe knows some things that don’t make that a great idea.
So, again, he can’t even explain himself, so of course that puts a strain on my relationship with Eddie Thawne but Joe sees it as absolutely necessary. Somehow it’ll all right itself when it needs to or at least he wants to believe that but he knows full well that the world they live in, things could get crazy at any minute then does.
TVF: I know Grodd is coming in the next episode…
JLM: Grodd is coming.
TVF: Is this going to feel like a different kind of villain compared to some of the other meta-humans and things the group has battled this season?
JLM: Yeah, particularly for Joe. I mean its one thing to stare at Captain Cold in the face and his gun and have a fear of that but at least he’s human. He’s susceptible to a bullet or pain but when you talk about a character like Grodd, it gets established that Joe doesn’t even really like normal gorillas let alone an eight-foot-tall, telepathic, supernatural gorillas.
This is a whole new world for Joe. He’s handled all this information he’s gotten since this accelerator exploded, all these meta-humans came out of nowhere and particularly what has happened with Barry but this Grodd thing is just off the chain. He can’t even believe that this is something that happens and that he’s part of this life and he’s actually in the sewer looking for this thing.
TVF: From the trailer it sounds like Wells is very much behind Grodd coming into everybody’s life. Is it really to slow everybody down so he can kind of keep his plan on track?
JLM: Well, you can imagine that anything that goes wrong and that has Wells’ name on it in any way, shape, or form is on purpose. He’s trying to throw us off pretty well and it works great. This giant creature that he seems to have some control over keeps us from him and it’s a good tactic on his part. I mean, he don’t know what to do with that big gorilla!
TVF: In the last episode, Joe talks about feeling responsible because he’s the one that kind of let Wells take Barry out of the hospital. Is Joe going to kind of let himself off the hook for that, or is he going to kind of continue feeling guilty for that?
JLM: I think as long the situation is the way it is…I mean, Nora Allen being dead and Barry’s dad is still in jail so Joe will always feel guilty about that. He’ll feel guilty like he may have had some hand in robbing Barry of his natural childhood and I don’t think he’ll ever let go of that. I think that’s a key part of the character. This still plays also with Iris. No one really knows at this point what has happened to Iris’s mom? Why she’s not in the picture? So he carries a lot of guilt with him.
TVF: I personally think Joe needs a little loving. Do you think maybe season two Joe can get a little action in on the show?
JLM: We can only hope so, man. At this point, Joe’s going through obviously quite a dry spell. He has too many other things to worry about in particularly his children that Joe doesn’t have a whole lot of time for loving, but hopefully, next season we’ll see.
TVF: Do you think anything surprises Joe at this point? He’s kind of seen a lot in the last year. Do you think anything can surprise him?
JLM: I think everything surprises Joe. No matter what he thinks he’s getting used to, it always goes a little deeper and a little bit further than he ever imagined it would go. So yeah, I think Joe’s surprised on a regular basis and it’s actually a whole lot more fun to play that way.
TVF: I want to ask you about the short film, The Letter Carrier. I talked to Rick Cosnett right before you guys were shooting and now it’s shot. What’s next?
JLM: We’re actually going into the editing process and the post thing. It was an amazing experience, first time I ever directed anything on film and I was really happy with what we’ve done. We got most our Flash crew to work with us and they were super psyched working on this little piece, which made us thrilled because we couldn’t believe that a whole crew pretty much backed us on our little story. It worked out really well.
The funny thing is we shot it just after we would finish shooting The Flash, right after we wrapped, and everything. Of course, we were all tired. We did 23 episodes of a one-hour action series, so you can imagine all of the work that went in to it but the fact that people still showed up to shoot our little movie was phenomenal. We couldn’t even believe that people were there and there with energy and excitement about what we were doing. Somebody even called it ‘the decompressing project’ meaning we did this whole season of a show and then we picked a project where we could do the same things we normally do but not under so much stress.

Jesse L. Martin sobre la reacción de Iris West al saber el secreto de Barry
Por Jolie Lash 5 Mayo, 2015 12:19 PM EDT
Iris West found out Barry Allen's metahuman secret in last week's "The Flash," and on Tuesday night, as the show continues, viewers will see she is not pleased she was kept in the dark.
"We will touch on that," Jesse L. Martin, who plays Det. Joe West (Iris' dad), told Access Hollywood of Iris' reaction. "Iris learns the secret, basically. She learns the secret and she didn't learn it from me or from Barry, so unfortunately, she's very angry that we did not tell her what was really going.
"And, of course, Joe's angle was, 'I was keeping that information secret from you because it would keep you safe,'" Jesse continued of his character's perspective. "Iris, of course, doesn't see it that way, so it's gonna be a big deal to try to get [back into] her good graces… because once Iris is mad, she stays mad for quite a while."
How Iris is going to feel when she finds out her dad turned down Eddie's ask -- for her hand in marriage – also hasn't been explored yet on the show.
"In a normal world, it might be fine, with Joe, for Iris to be with Eddie, but in this world, Joe knows too much and he knows where that relationship might end up because he's gotten a little peek of the future from Barry, through Harrison Wells, and he knows it won't end well for either one of them -- particularly for Iris, so he has to sort of shut Eddie down," Jesse said of Joe's recent Jitters coffee scene with Eddie. "He doesn't feel good about it, but it's what he has to do and he runs the risk of Iris going absolutely nuts on him for doing so."
What's next for Iris now that she's pieced together the truth about Barry is a big theme of Tuesday's "The Flash," but since the episode is called "Grodd Lives" it also means the return of the gorilla, who was affected by the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator explosion. Jesse's character Joe is central to that plot line, which mean a lot of green screen style work for the actor.
"That was a lot of green screen acting, but it was a hell of a lot of fun, I must say," Jesse said. "I mean, just having a notion of how giant that creature is, I mean, we did have an actor in a suit and he was definitely the size that you eventually see on the show, so it wasn't very hard to imagine, in most cases, what you are up against. … In the teaser, they show sort of Grodd doing the alien thing right in my face. That was just to plain air because they couldn't get in close enough without screwing up the effect, but you're just sort of using your imagination to the hilt. I mean, that's what little kids do, that's what we do."

- Joe West habla sobre el enfrentarse cara a cara con Gorilla Grodd (cbr):
Joe West habla sobre el enfrentarse cara a cara con Gorilla Grodd
Por Bryan Cairns, 05 Mayo 2015
Central City's Detective Joe West has encountered some pretty menacing super-powered adversaries since S.T.A.R. Labs' particle accelerator exploded. So far, they've all been human in nature, but that's a streak that's about to end because tonight, the savage primate Gorilla Grodd is unleashed.
Introduced by DC Comics' "Flash" team of John Broome and Carmine Infantino in 1959, Grodd was once an average ape until an alien crash landed on Earth and imbued him with super-intelligence and psionic abilities. The CW series reimagines Grodd as a lab experiment gone horribly wrong -- or right, depending on your point of view. Tonight, after lurking in the shadows over the last few months, Grodd finally makes his move, targeting the Flash and Joe.
Ahead of tonight's episode, Jesse L. Martin spoke with CBR News about Joe's confrontation with Grodd, the newly revealed villain's head games, how Joe will continue to protect his daughter Iris now that she has learned the truth about Barry, and what to expect from the wrath of Harrison Wells. Plus, Martin hints at Barry's potentially game-changing decision to come in "The Flash's" Season 1 finale.
CBR News: There's been a lot of build-up to Grodd's full debut. What makes him such a big threat to the Flash?
Jesse L. Martin: First of all, [his] size alone. He's a giant, so he's just a physical threat to anyone who comes near him, including Barry as the Flash. But, apparently Grodd has been evolving, so he's gaining in intelligence and things like telepathy. That makes any creature dangerous. We learn Joe doesn't even like regular gorilla,s and here he's hunting for a supernatural one.
Grodd has been prowling the sewer system for a while now. What finally brings him into conflict with Flash and Joe?
The fact that Harrison Wells has been found out and has gone missing, if you will. That seems to have some sort of effect on Grodd. It's why Grodd seems to show up out of nowhere. Harrison is sort of the paternal figure to Grodd, or at least that's what we perceive.
Unfortunately, as we've seen in the clips and commercials, Joe gets captured. How dire do things get?
Pretty damn dire. Joe had no idea what he was coming up against. He had never even seen a gorilla in person. Then, when Grodd finally shows himself, I don't have a chance to get away. He keeps Joe in his lair for quite a while.
Does Grodd get in Joe's head like he did with General Wade Eiling?
Yes, he does. Joe can't even believe this thing is real. The fact that it's communicating with him the way it is -- that's the first time that's ever happened to Joe in any way, shape or form, especially dealing with all these different meta-humans. He just can't believe the situation he's in. On top of that, it's absolutely terrifying.
The episode's teaser trailer shows Grodd right up in Joe's face. How was it filming that scene? Were you acting against thin air, or did they have someone opposite you and then digitally removed them?
In the close-up you saw, it was me acting to the air or an "x" hanging on a stick. You can imagine how terrifying it is. It was fun to actually work that way, because you can just assume the worst as far as what this thing looks like and how scary it might be and how close it might be to you.
It's that "Aliens" moment.
No kidding! A lot of people say that -- that's exactly what it felt like.
In the episode "The Trap," Barry had a very bad idea on how to trick a confession out of Wells. What are the ramifications of that plan crashing and burning?
The hard part about that is Wells is always a little bit more prepared and a step ahead of us every single time. That's when we realize it's totally true, and the gig is up because he figures out what we are doing while we are doing it. That has ramifications, because now he knows we're on the hunt for him. That's when things get really bad between us and Harrison Wells and the Reverse Flash.
Joe also didn't give his blessing to Eddie proposing to Iris. In what way does that affect their relationship?
It definitely affects Joe and Eddie's relationship because [Eddie] thought they were getting closer and working well as partners, and that I accepted the fact that he and my daughter were having a relationship. I had accepted that fact, but the idea of it becoming permanent, and me knowing what I know about the future between Barry and Iris -- there's no way I could let him do that. It's going to end in ruin for both of them. I can't have that on my shoulders.
Iris also figured out Barry is the Flash. How does Joe feel about that development?
Joe feels terrible that he kept that from Iris, but he was very sure he was keeping her safe by keeping her in the dark about this information. The fact she finds out, particularly with Iris being the kind of hothead she can be, is a bad thing. She feels we don't trust her with that information, and that's a bad thing with Iris, because she won't let it go right away.
He must freak out knowing the Reverse Flash went after her.
Oh, my God -- yeah. We've learned Barry can't even stop the Reverse Flash at this point, and the guy just keeps showing up. The more I get involved in the investigation and the hunt, the more danger I put Iris in, and Barry -- and myself!
Joe is mostly worried about Iris. Barry is obviously a superhero, so he can handle things she can't. I'm a cop and happen to have a gun, so I might be able to do something. Iris is a young woman who works at the newspaper. She has a pen. It's wrong for me to put all of us in danger, but we have no choice. This guy is literally hunting all of us, so we have to do the same.
After tonight's episode, there are only two episodes left this season. What's on the horizon as we head into the finale?
Particularly in the finale, viewers can expect to see Barry grapple with the notion of really going back in time again to try and save his mom and stop his dad from going to jail. The big story in our finale is, what are the ramifications if he does so? If you go back in time and change one little thing, everything from then on becomes a completely different story.
Barry realizes if he does do this and goes to save his mom, that he won't have the life that we've all seen up until now. It weighs heavily on him, and he asks Joe what he should do. Joe says that if he has the chance to help his mom and dad, then he should do so. The gist of the episode is whether he does or not, and what kind of changes that would make.

Though The Flash is a spinoff from the CW's Arrow, the freshman superhero drama is clearly learning from its mother show's mistakes.
Take, for instance, the fact that Arrow waited almost three whole seasons for the detective-turned-captain of the police force to figure out the guy he's been talking to, working with and hunting is also the guy who dated both his daughters. It became quite ridiculous that a police detective of all people couldn't tell that underneath a hood and eye mask was the man who made his life a living hell without a hood or mask on. The character development of Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) unfortunately suffered as a result of that creative choice.
The Flash, however, didn't keep its aspiring investigative journalist Iris West (Candice Patton) in the dark when it came to her BFF's secret identity, and the show is only benefitting from that. Last week, she figured out on her own that Barry (Grant Gustin) is the Flash, and that huge, game-changing moment had fans shouting from the rooftops (okay, actually on Twitter) that #IrisBest is back. And we couldn't agree more!
"The fan response has been pretty amazing, and I didn't expect it to be as great as it is," Patton tells E! News. "Fans are extremely relieved, they're happy with the way Iris found out, and what's really important for them is that Iris found out on her own. No one had to tell her. They're excited that now that Iris knows, we'll see her work with Barry as the Flash and the S.T.A.R. Labs team to find Eddie [Rick Cosnett] and bring him back. She's also going to use her skill set to aid in finding Grodd."
Patton reveals that playing that moment when Iris feels the spark with the Flash, realizing it's Barry, was such a relief after playing "dumb" all season long.
"It felt so awesome to finally play that," Patton says with a laugh. "After 19 episodes of playing her kept in the dark, it meant I was spending a lot of time isolated. To finally get to the play the moment where Iris found out, it opened up so many more possibilities for her. And the way it happened, it was right. She's extremely intelligent so it felt deserved."
Thought Patton does defend the show's writers with keeping Iris in the dark about Barry's identity for as long as they did.
"The idea of being the damsel for so long was troubling for some people, but I understand that," Patton says. "You kind of have to have that Lois Lane, that Iris West, and I feel like we got to the reveal of her finding out much sooner than I thought and sooner than other shows have done in the past."
She continues, "But it's good that the truth is finally out there, because she can be the Iris West that we know her to be in the comic books, which is strong and smart and helpful and intelligent."
Preach! But what does this mean for WestAllen, aka Iris and Barry's relationship, now that Iris knows, but Barry doesn't know that she knows? (That's a mouthful, huh?)
"We'll see Iris processing this huge piece of information, and she's going to give Barry the opportunity to come clean on his own, and then she'll confront him about it," Patton reveals. "She's very angry and disappointed and hurt that her best friend and her father, basically her family, has been lying to her and keeping this huge secret from her."
But that doesn't mean that Iris and Barry's relationship is going to take a hit in light of this major secret coming out. In fact, Patton teases it might actually bring these two closer, ahem, if you know what we mean!
"Barry and Iris, for the most part, they have an extremely healthy relationship apart from this lie," Patton says. "Other than that, they've always been honest with each other and this revelation is only going to open the door for them to put everything on the table and go back to having a great, honest relationship with each other. You're going to see great scenes with them where they have a heart-to-heart and really say what they need to say to each other."
But don't get your hopes up for a full-fledged WestAllen relationship this season, despite the fact that Barry knows they're going to get married in the future. There's a certain Detective Prettyboy standing the way of that at the moment! (And as much as we want WestAllen, we can't deny that Eddie has totally stolen our hearts this season.)
"That storyline is going to play out past season one, because you need to remember that Eddie is still in the picture," Patton says. "At the end of the day, Iris loves him. He's a great man, so while she has feelings for Barry to some degree that she's not willing to deal with, she is still going to be a good girlfriend to the man she's with. She's going to continue to be conflicted about this."
And you can bet that Iris is going to play a part in rescuing Eddie from the Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) in tonight's episode, "Grodd Lives."
"There is nothing more important to Iris coming up than making sure that Eddie is safe," Patton says. "She will do anything and everything she can to find him and get him back."

Jesse L. Martin habla sobre el enfrentar a Grodd, y la ‘Enorme’ Season Finale
Por laura Prudom 05 Mayo, 2015 | 03:46PM PT
As “The Flash” speeds toward its season one finale on May 19, secrets are finally being revealed; last week’s episode ended with the Reverse Flash — aka Eobard Thawne, aka Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) — kidnapping Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), for reasons that have yet to be uncovered. Meanwhile, Eddie’s girlfriend Iris West (Candice Patton) finally figured out the secret identity of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) as the Flash, which should lead to a painful confrontation between Barry, Iris and her father, Joe (Jesse L. Martin), once she realizes that the men in her life have been lying to her for months.
Ahead of the May 5 episode, “Grodd Lives,” Variety spoke to Jesse L. Martin about Joe’s relationship with Iris, his confrontation with Grodd and what’s ahead in the “huge” season one finale. Light spoilers ahead.
Last week’s episode saw Eddie being kidnapped by the Reverse Flash — what’s Joe’s reaction when he discovers that Eddie is missing?
That is the most devastating news; I keep losing partners to these meta-humans. So we don’t know what he’s planning to do with Eddie, but we do know that there’s some connection between their names, the Thawne name. So we’re not sure what he could possibly be doing with Eddie or why he would kidnap Eddie, but it seems quite dangerous that it’s occurred, and it’s all about finding Eddie at that point. It definitely can’t be good.
This week’s episode also reintroduces Gorilla Grodd — what was it like to shoot those scenes?
It was actually quite amazing. This is one of those shows where you end up acting to almost nothing sometimes — maybe an X taped on the wall, or on a stick, or what have you — but just seeing what the renderings were for Grodd and how fantastically huge he is and obviously bigger than life, it’s pretty easy to imagine how horrifying that would be. Joe is particularly horrified by normal gorillas, let alone a supernatural one… It’s ultra-realistic and a lot scarier than I ever imagined it would be.
Viewers might have some idea why Grodd is on a rampage, given his history with General Wade Eiling (Clancy Brown), but how much does Team Flash know about his motivations in the episode?
We don’t even know what Grodd’s motivations are right now other than that he may have been treated very poorly by someone, and we’re not exactly sure who that is. Barry has flashes of the treatment that Grodd received, because Grodd’s sort of telepathic, so he shoots some of those images to Barry. So Barry has an idea of what happened to Grodd. We don’t know who did it and why Grodd would be on a rampage.
Like any good parent, Joe always manages to justify keeping secrets from his kids under the guise of protecting them, but now Iris knows the truth about Barry — what can you say about the repercussions of him hiding that from her, once she finds out that Joe was in on it?
Well, it’s one thing to hide something from Barry. Barry has his own way of reacting to those things, but Iris is a whole other story. I liken her to her mom [who we don’t even] know yet, but I’m imagining that she would get that from her mom where it is devastating to her to be left out, to not know what’s really going on. And when she finds out by herself, she feels betrayed by both me and Barry, and rightly so. But again, Joe is right at least in his own mind that she shouldn’t know these things until needs be, because it’s probably safer that she didn’t know.
Is it really, though? She has still ended up being targeted by a number of villains despite not knowing the truth…
I think it had been… Iris is a very inquisitive girl. There’s a reason she’s a journalist. So if she finds out, she has a way of doing things without saying so, like reporting things without coming to us and saying, “Is it cool that I report this?” So that’s a good reason to keep that information from her, at least temporarily. [Laughs.] But I understand the conflict because we are talking about my flesh and blood, my daughter. So she’s right in a way when she says, “Don’t you think it would’ve been safer for me to know so I could protect myself?” But to me she’s always my little girl so I’m going to treat her that way on instinct.
In episode 22, “Rogue Air,” the synopsis reveals that Barry turns to Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) for help against Wells, which Joe obviously can’t be thrilled about. Does that mean we’re going to get an “I told you so” moment when things inevitably go awry?
I imagine that that is the case. [Laughs.] It’s not necessarily an “I told you so moment,” but it is brought up and Barry pretty much says “thank you for not saying it.” So it is approached, but I never actually have to say those words. But Barry gets in bed basically with one of the super villains and that can never go well. We’re learning that with Harrison Wells. We don’t even know Captain Cold that well. So the fact that Barry’s so desperate for help that he would go to somebody like that just sticks in Joe’s craw like you wouldn’t believe.
How much of a role does time-travel play in the final few episodes, beyond what we’ve already seen of Wells coming back to the past?
We do approach the notion of time travel, and Barry’s presented with a chance to save his mom, and the big dilemma is, if you go back in time and you change one little thing, of course that affects everything going forward, and he realizes that he may not have the life that he had growing up with us if he goes back. So there’s a huge dilemma as to whether it should happen or not, and of course, he turns to Joe and asks for advice. Joe’s notion is that if he can make things right then he should. So the entire episode for the audience will be about whether or not Barry actually goes back and changes history.
What can you preview about the potential repercussions of the finale and how it’ll affect the show’s trajectory going into season two? Are we heading for a cliffhanger?
Absolutely. Yes, it is. So many huge things happen in that episode and I’m not even sure what I can say. There’s so many surprises, but it’s definitely a cliffhanger. By the end of it, you have to imagine that things are just going to be crazy at the start of season two because I believe that we’re starting season two directly after the last moment you see at the end of the season.
The pace of this season has been staggering — there have already been so many plot twists and reveals, I can’t imagine how you’ll top yourselves in the finale.
I have to say, it’s one of the luckiest jobs I’ve had. I mean, luck is a funny word because I did work very hard, but just being in the situation where I actually get to work with these people every single day and the stuff we get to do because of the genre, it’s awesome. It’s like an actor’s playground.

Armen Kevorkian and his team tackled their biggest challenge yet by bringing the villainous gorilla to life.
Even the fastest man alive needs a boost from his friends.
The Flash has earned praise as one of the most visually ambitious comic book shows on television, thanks in large part to visual effects supervisor Armen Kevorkian and his team.
In Wednesday's episode, Kevorkian's team faced its biggest challenge yet when Barry (Grant Gustin) finally faced off against Grodd, a psychic gorilla whose appearance fans had been anticipating for months. In a world in which Andy Serkis and Fox's Planet of the Apes franchise has set the bar high for such effects, the stakes were even higher.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Kevorkian talks the pressure to live up to comic book fans' expectations and what to expect from season one's final two episodes.
What were the challenges of bringing Grodd to life?
I knew we could pull off something that would be pleasing, but it had to be pleasing to the masses for you to know you did your job right. Until last night, it was still that nervous feeling of, "I hope everyone is going to be happy with this character" that is pretty well known in the DC Universe.
Did the great effects in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes weigh on you at all?
Absolutely. Audiences come from these $200 million movies. They know it's television, but still there's what they are used to visually that you have to kind of live up to, even though you don't have the same amount of time. We try to structure what we do by prepping early. Our producers — Greg [Berlanti] , Andrew [Kreisberg] and Geoff Johns — are great about giving us a heads up on certain things where I have a little bit more time to think about it, develop it. It is very challenging coming from last year's Planet of the Apes, which looked amazing, to recreate a character people were waiting for all season long.
What do we have to look forward to with Robbie Amell's Firestorm returning next week?
What was fun about creating him, and also challenging at the same time, is obviously you look at the comic book references because you want to stay in the same flavor of what has been established. But you have to create it for a moving picture, and having a guy whose head is on fire and hands are on fire, you're at the borderline of "this could look cheesy." There have been other characters in movies where people have been on fire — The Human Torch and things like that — so there are those challenges of what they've established in movies that you kind of want to steer away from because your character is different, but you kind of want to stay on the par of the quality that has been established. Itt was challenging to make sure we did him justice, because he was a favorite character of the fans and you didn't want to screw it up.
Do you work on things like Grodd really far in advance?
After we completed the pilot, Greg, Andrew and Geoff Johns gave me a heads up that they wanted to introduce Grodd this season. It allowed me on the side with my guys to think about how we would do this character. It does give you a little more time, even the thinking part of how we would organize things to get to where we want to when the time came. We just started building him a little bit in advance. But you are involved with episodes that actually air, so there's only so much time you have to spend on side projects.
Visual effects is notoriously a 24/7 job. Do you and your team manage to have outside lives?
It's hard to. When you sign up for it, you know it's going to take up a lot of your time. As long as you are OK with it, then it's a choice you've made and you just go with it.
Are you already thinking about season two?
We'll get a little bit of a break. There have been things thrown around that we are possibly going to be doing, which is always good to have in the back of your mind so you can start thinking about it. We'll definitely get a break after we've delivered the last two, which are pretty big and pretty cool episodes. Firestorm is coming back in next week's episode to help out with things, and he looks great.
