- ¡¡¡"The Flash" encuentra a su 'Wally West'!!!:
CLrKaP0WIAA2wYE.jpg large.jpg

CMTt2LmVAAAh5b-.jpg large.jpg

Translating some of DC Comics’ most iconic villains from the page to the screen is always daunting for the creative team behind “The Flash.” But none more so than Grodd, an 800-lb. gorilla with psychic abilities and genius intellect who goes toe-to-toe with the CW show’s super-powered hero just as believably as the series’ human antagonists.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” have raised expectations for viewers accustomed to seeing photo-real creatures on screen, and yet “Flash” visual effects supervisor Armen Kevorkian and his team at Encore Hollywood eschewed the motion-capture approach utilized by those blockbusters in favor of computer animation, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Visual effects for the episode “Grodd Lives.”

“We start from scratch — that way we have total control,” Kevorkian says. “We have some really talented animators here and it was just a matter of me demonstrating what I thought the scene needed, what the shot needed, and going through different versions until we got to where we got to, even with the facial expressions.”

Although Kevorkian’s team consulted videos of real-life apes for inspiration, Grodd’s more human attributes altered their approach. “A lot of times, you realize that even if you reference a real gorilla, it doesn’t work for the character that you’re establishing here — you have to take creative license in his actions, his attitude,” Kevorkian notes.

The strategy paid off, with many viewers unaware that the character was entirely computer-generated. “We read some fan reaction and some people thought it was partially CG, partially makeup, maybe a guy in a suit for certain shots,” Kevorkian says.

Audiences were also fooled by the digital double used for Grant Gustin’s titular hero in a scene where Grodd lifts the Flash into the air like a toy. “It’s always challenging adding any kind of digital double to a shot. We’ve had Grant’s from the very beginning,” Kevorkian says, disclosing that Gustin was intricately scanned before the pilot, allowing the vfx team to perfect his double on a timetable similar to feature films. “I think we’ve fooled people a lot more times than they’ve noticed, but obviously there are certain scenes you know can’t be the real actor.”

With the demands of a broadcast television schedule always a challenge for effects-heavy series, Kevorkian is grateful that “Flash” exec producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns warned him that Grodd was part of their season one master plan soon after the pilot was shot.

“That allowed us to work on designing him based on how he’s been established in the comic books; (to) work with conceptual artists, design his new look. We started building him in 3D while we were delivering other episodes.”

Kevorkian’s team pulled off countless cinematic setpieces over the course of the first season, from crashing a train to simulating a tsunami to making fans believe a man can both fly and burst into flames, but it’s the little tricks that often escape detection that satisfy the vfx magician most.

“It’s the small things sometimes that make you smile, like (Flash) running up a building. Those things that work in a comic book that you’re always afraid might not translate well to moving picture, and finding a way bring the two together.”

Kevorkian notes that his team strives to bring artistry to the comic book spectacle.

“The equipment is great, the software is great, but it’s the guy who sits behind the box that makes the difference. In our industry, you have a lot of people who know how to use the software, (but) it doesn’t necessarily make them an artist. It’s truly the artists that we have that help me bring everything to life.”

As part of The CW portion of the TCA Press Tour, there was a compelling panel entitled “Running the Show: The Women Executive Producers of The CW,” with Arrow, The Flash, The Vampire Diaries, iZombie, Jane the Virgin, Reign and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend all represented. After the panel, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with The Flash EP Gabrielle Stanton to chat about what’s to come in Season 2 of the hugely popular series.

During this exclusive interview, Stanton talked about female representation on The Flash, collaborating with the teams at Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on character cross-overs, where Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) head is at in Season 2, the Speed Force, the introduction of Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears), Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) and the new meta-human task force, Iris’ (Candice Patton) journey, adding Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), when we might see Killer Frost again, and how Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is coping.

Collider: Since we’re celebrating the voice of female executive producers on The CW at the TCA, how do you feel about the female representation and viewpoint on The Flash?

GABRIELLE STANTON: This show actually has great female characters. You have Iris, who is now a reporter. You have Caitlin, who’s a scientist. It’s really cool that when Andrew [Kreisberg] and Greg [Berlanti] started The Flash, they just immediately put in these kick-ass equal characters. There wasn’t any question of, “Oh, what are we going to do with them?” They were there, and they were part of the show and part of the team. And they’re very different. We want make Iris and Caitlin friends this season because I feel like they would be friends, in real life.

This world keeps getting bigger, with Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. How do you decide where a character starts and who gets to pick the version of the character that we see?

STANTON: Oh, there are fights! It’s just what works for us, story wise, and what works for what we’re doing with Barry and the team, at the time. Sometimes Arrow will start things, or we’ll start things, and we’ll cross them over. We had Captain Cold and Heat Wave last season, and they were so popular that we have Legends. We juggle, but it’s fun. We have so many different worlds to play in that we can say, “Hey, can we borrow Felicity this week?” It’s neat to be able to do. It’s hard because of the scheduling and production. All the line producers go crazy when we talk about doing it. Fortunately Arrow and The Flash shoot right next door to each other, up in Vancouver. We can be like, “Just go across the hall.”

Where is Barry Allen’s head at, after everything he went through last season?

STANTON: He went through a lot, at the end of last season. He’s definitely going to start this season with a step back and be like, “What am I doing? Why am I doing this?” If last season was the journey of Barry discovering he’s a hero, this season is definitely him trying to figure out what that means. What is it to be a hero? What does he need to be a hero? What is it going to do to his personal relationships? It’s an evolution that’s going to start in the beginning of the season, and go all season long. You’re going to see, early on, Barry coming into his own as The Flash, a little bit more. He has to make some terrible decisions, and he’s going to struggle with those. He’s going to think about, can I live with myself, having to make those decisions, and still do what I do? That’s something he’s going to be struggling with, for the first half of the season. Some of it is learning how to be okay with his past decisions, some of it is learning how to make better decisions, in the future, and some of it is about how he can let people help him make decisions.

Is there anyone he can confide in about what he saw in the Speed Force, or will he keep that to himself?

STANTON: He still has Joe, he still has his dad, and we’re introducing Jay Garrick, who will be a mentory character to Barry. Jay has seen some things that Barry hasn’t seen, and he’s going to be helping him through the process.

How will the mentor relationship between Jay Garrick and Barry Allen compare to what he had with Harrison Wells?

STANTON: Reverse Flash was always trying to get Barry to run faster. He seemed like he was really helping him, but really, he was doing it for his own evil purposes. Hopefully, it’s going to be a little bit different now that Barry is exploring the use of his powers without the man who killed his mother sitting on his shoulder.

Is it harder for Barry to trust people now?

STANTON: I think he’s a little more careful to trust everyone because of what happened, as anyone would be. But, he’s still Barry. He still has that fantastic, optimistic energy. He’s still willing to say, “Okay, let me see what you’re going to do, and then I’ll decide.”

How is Joe West doing now, after facing meta-humans and an enormous gorilla?

STANTON: I know! Poor Joe. He’s our everyman. Imagine if you or I had to walk into the lab and they’re like, “Oh, Joe, by the way, there are all these meta-humans and a giant gorilla.” At the end of last season, with that singularity in the sky, Central City obviously knows there’s stuff going on. So, when we open up the season, The Flash and meta-humans, and the idea that there’s other stuff out there, is going to be a lot more in the zeitgeist. Joe is going to be working on the meta-human task force at the police station, so when a call comes in, if it’s a bank robber with wings and horns and he’s shooting fire, than they’ll probably send Joe.

How is Iris dealing with everything she went through, with the absence of Eddie and her feelings for Barry? Is she going to have to deal with all of that?

STANTON: She’s going to come into her own a little bit, this year. All this stuff has happened and she’s gotta figure out what she’s gonna do about it. Hers is going to be a journey of, “I’m going to become the woman I want to be. I’m not going to be as reactive as maybe I was, in the past.” She’s definitely going to be more of a part of Team Flash because she knows all the secrets now and we don’t have to be hiding things from her. We’re going to see more of her, as a journalist who’s generating stories. Maybe Team Flash needs her help one week, and then she goes to them and says, “I need you.” We’re going to see a lot more of the world outside of STAR Labs, and Barry and Iris interacting in it.

Were you personally rooting for Iris to be in on Barry’s secret?

STANTON: It was so hard! Everyone was so mad that Iris didn’t know, but I watched Lois & Clark, and she didn’t know for like ten years. It took forever. It was important for Barry to keep the secret from her, as long as he did. To defend Joe and Barry, they had really good reasons. Was I really happy when he finally told her? Yes, but more as a writer and storyteller because I now get to bring Iris into those stories more.

You’re adding Wally West this season, who is a very beloved character. Did you know that there would be such interest in him?

STANTON: I knew people were going to be excited about Wally West, but I didn’t know they were going to be this excited about Wally West, which is a bummer because I can tell you nothing about Wally West. I can say that he’s going to be on [the show] and it’s going to be really exciting. The fans will definitely like what we’re doing with him.

How did you decide which version of Wally West that we get to see?

STANTON: We want to stay respectful and totally satisfy what the fans want out of this. But on the other hand, we also need to change the character, twist things and put our own spin on it, so that it’s not exactly what everyone expects. Otherwise, you’re like, “We’re introducing Wally West,” and someone looks it up on Wikipedia and knows the story, so they don’t watch. So, it will definitely be our twist on the Wally West character.

We got to see a glimpse of Killer Frost in the Speed Force. Will we have to wait awhile to see that again?

STANTON: It’s going to be a slower burn on that. That was just to keep people guessing. Who knows when Killer Frost is going to turn up? We did the helmet. We try to drop little Easter eggs. What I really like about The Flash is that I am a comic book fan, so I know a lot of this stuff, but my husband is not a comic book fan at all, and he still gets everything.

What is Cisco’s journey, this season?

STANTON: Wells was like a father to him and it was pretty devastating, losing him, and it was pretty devastating when he tried to kill him. So, he’s definitely going on a journey, this season. The second season of a show is always great because you’ve built up your main character, explored a little bit of him and sent him on his journey, and then you can fill in some of the other characters and get a deeper look into their psyches. We’re definitely going to be doing that, this year.

Will he get a love interest?

STANTON: He just may get one. That’s all I’m going to say. It’s possible. Even Golden Glider likes him.

"THE FLASH":

Keiynan Lonsdale began acting only three years ago in his native Australia, but has already landed a couple of high profile Hollywood gigs.

He plays fan-favorite Uriah in Lionsgate’s “Divergent” franchise opposite Shailene Woodley, and recently wrapped up filming on the YA adaptation’s two-part finale, “Allegiant.” He also recently landed the role of Wally West on The CW’s “The Flash.”

The character is a pivotal transfer from the pages of the DC comic books, and has been teased by producers since the very start of the show. Lonsdale will be a series regular when the show returns for its second season in October, joining Grant Gustin as Barry Allen aka The Flash, Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Joe West and Tom Cavanagh as Harrison Wells, who is also the Reverse-Flash, The Flash’s ultimate nemesis.

The actor talked to TheWrap about the long audition process that landed him one of the most talked-about roles of the season, and how his new gig has already conflicted with his status as a “massive fan” of the CW superhero drama.

What was your audition process like for “The Flash”?
It was interesting. I auditioned for a different TV show that was still in the same universe, and then I got a call a couple weeks later and my team said I wasn’t going any further for that role, but the creators of “The Flash” wanted to see me for Wally West. And I was like, “Oh that’s crazy, I’ve just been watching the whole season,” so that was pretty cool. And then I went in and met Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and they seemed really cool and really excited about the potential for the character. I had a couple of auditions and it spanned over a couple of months. So I really didn’t know what was going to happen. I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to assume I have anything until it’s completely announced, so once it was announced I was like ok cool, I got it for sure.

So were you keeping this giant secret for a while before it was announced to all of us?
Yes and no. It’s the same with a lot of jobs. You kinda have a job, 90%, and that’s almost enough to celebrate, but not really. I’d been in situations where I had the job and thinking it was 100% and then a week before it’s fallen through, so you just never know. For me I don’t like to get too excited too quick. My team had told me some good things so I was like, okay, that’s cool, and I’m just gonna relax on it and not think about it. So I guess I had known it was a possibility for a while but I didn’t know for sure.

When do you start filming?
I start filming in October, but I don’t know the exact date yet.

So what can you tell us about Wally and how he’s connected to the “Flash” universe, particularly Iris?
Everything has been kept under wraps, even to me, which I think is really cool. Since watching the show I’ve become a massive fan, so when I found out I got the part, one part of me was like “oh but now I’m going to know all the spoilers and stuff, I don’t want to know that!” [laughs] But yeah, they haven’t even told me the exact details yet in terms of the relation to Iris or how exactly Wally is going to be connected into the storyline and how he’ll weave through the different storylines, so I’m not really sure. But I’m sure I’ll find out soon. It’s going to be a hard secret to keep!

Have you met your cast mates yet?
No, the only person I met was Candice. I got to meet her in my final auditions, which was really cool. It was awesome. She was great to read with, she had a great energy, so I’m super excited to work with her, and everyone.

When The Flash returns for Season 2 on Oct. 6, Barry Allen won’t be the only one running through Central City. In fact, the young hero will be joined by not one but three other speedsters, that we know of thus far!

So how does the CW series keep Barry’s story special and unique when there’s people zipping in from all sorts of places and timelines?

“We didn’t want Barry to get lonely so we thought we’d bring in some more speedsters,” executive producer Gabrielle Stanton tells TVLine. “It’s always Barry’s journey. The Flash is always about Barry, but these people who come in will show us different ways that The Flash can be.”

For starters, blast from the past Jay Garrick (played by Masters of Sex‘s Teddy Sears) — the first DC Comics character to take on the Flash persona — will represent “another version” of the scarlet speedster. “He’s going to be Barry’s mentor a little bit and help him really reach his potential” as the costumed superhero, Stanton previews.

Then there’s Wally West (Dance Academy‘s Keiynan Lonsdale), who in comics lore becomes the hero known as Kid Flash. Stanton is mum on how he will be introduced into the show, but hints at “a very interesting and close relationship” between the newbie, Barry and the rest of the team.

Not to be outdone by all the fast-moving heroes, Season 2’s Big Bad will also ramp up his speed. “Zoom is just scary as all hell,” Stanton says of the new nemesis. And although he may resemble Eobard Thawne upon first impression, Stanton promises there will be no mistaking him for Barry’s previous foe once he’s introduced.

“Zoom is going to be very different in terms of motivation, in terms of what he wants from The Flash, in terms of why he’s doing what he’s doing,” the EP teases. “I know a lot of people are thinking, ‘[Zoom and Reverse Flash] were so similar in the comics. What’s going to make them different?’ I guarantee no one will confuse him for one second with what we did last year. It’s actually much more different than people would think.”
