Are wedding bells in Beauty and the Beast’s future?

Fans of The CW’s supernatural romance have been waiting a year for the next chapter in Vincent (Jay Ryan) and Catherine’s (Kristin Kreuk) epic love story and boy, does patience sure pay off!

When Beauty and the Beast returns Thursday for 13 brand-new episodes, two months have passed after the devastating finale (R.I.P. Gabe) and things between Vincent and Catherine couldn’t be better. So naturally, Vincent – done with his beastly ways for now – makes the bold decision to propose to Catherine, and ETonline has your exclusive first look from the premiere.

Unfortunately for the couple, all good things must come to an end and their brief respite certainly does but at what cost? Ahead of the season three premiere, Ryan jumped on the phone with ETonline to chat about Vincent's marriage goals, conflicts with Catherine and a hint at season four.

ETonline: What do you want fans to know about season three?

Jay Ryan: Season three is a very precisely-sifted version of seasons one and two, and it’ll be in a more cohesive form. It’ll be more charming for the audience I think, because we know what the audiences want now, and it’ll have a good mix of the mythology and the romance that our dedicated fans are after.

Speaking of things loyal fans of the show like, Catherine and Vincent start off the season trying to be a real couple but I imagine that honeymoon period doesn’t last.

It doesn’t last. We definitely play on that in the opening of season three. Vincent is very much in a comfortable, glorious place – probably where we’ve never seen him before. It feels like he has come full circle and he’s put the lid on the darker side of who he is. The DHS agents, who are supposedly helping them out, he got them exonerated from his term in prison and they’re keeping this watchful eye on him and making sure he’s protected. He feels safe and he feels like he’s at the point now where he can life the commitment to Catherine a little higher and possibly pop the big question. But that doesn’t last very long!

What prompts Vincent to take that big leap forward and plan his proposal to Catherine? Does he feel, like you said, that this is the natural next step in their relationship?

Vincent feels like it’s now and never. There’s a calm in the storm, everything seems to be tied up, there are no creatures or nasty people hanging around in their inner circle – or so it seems. He wants to show Catherine that he can have this other side to him, that he doesn’t have to be a half-man, half-creature who is out to fight all the time – that he can be a regular Joe Blow and live a normal lifestyle. He misreads what Catherine wants in their relationship and that’s where conflict may hit the two. Vincent has a lot of maturing and growing up to do in terms of what he understands what a relationship should be and Catherine as well. They’ve been so occupied by their occupations that they’ve got to give time to really learn who each other are now and who they are as a unit together.

You mentioned Catherine and Vincent won’t be seeing eye to eye when it comes to their romance. Anything in particular you can speak to?

He finds out that Catherine is feeling a little empty [with] this new lifestyle the two have been living as a normal couple. He’s taken aback by that. The DHS agents withdraw their offer of keeping them safe because of supernatural occurrences in New York City. Catherine wants to jump on the case, she wants to fight the good fight and find out what the answers are, and Vincent just wants to pop the question and run away from it all. You’ve got these opposing stereotypes of the female and the male mind.

Does he actually go through with the proposal? Is there an answer?

There are several attempts and often when Vincent thinks it’s the perfect time to get down on one knee, a larger threat creeps in. But there is a proposal. I’m not going to tell you if she accepts it or not, you’ll have to wait and see. But I think what the conclusion these two characters come to is now that they’re at this point in their lives, they have to really accept who they are in this world and what their purpose is.

The fact that Vincent is bottling up the beast side of him for so long is going to be a major issue moving forward.

It really is. Vincent is so good at lying to himself and thinking everything is going to be OK. He is very much a dormant volcano at this point. It’s bubbling inside and he is so afraid of anyone asking him to show that darker side of him. He’s worried that as soon as it comes out – it’s been so long since he’s shown that side – it’s going be even darker and more ferocious than anyone’s seen before, especially Catherine because he’s always worried about losing her. Right at the happiest point in his life, everything can come crumbling down at the beat of a heart. He is on eggshells at this point.

There are several new characters coming into fray, notably Bob (Alan Van Sprang) and Carol (Natasha Henstridge), married Homeland Security Agents. How does their presence affect Vincent and Carol?

Bob and Carol were brought as a device to show what Vincent and Catherine could be like in the next five or 10 years and make it OK that there is another couple like them. [Bob and Carol] help them along with their predicament but also show how to live life as a loving couple. [Vincent and Catherine] are lured into a sense of hope with Bob and Carol entering the picture, but as is the way Beauty and the Beast is formulated, it all goes awry. They become best of friends and the worst of enemies, all in the matter of a few episodes. There are some great fight sequences between the four characters. Bob and Carol are almost carbon copies of Vincent and Catherine, so they’re a lot harder to manage than some of their other encounters.

There’s also Liam (Jason Gesnick), who is a new character that is said to be a major threat to Catherine and Vincent. What can we expect from him?

Liam enters the picture later down the track and Liam is connected to another character which you’ll discover. The audience will sort of put two and two together once he enters the picture. Liam is a mastermind who can definitely take Vincent and Catherine down. He is a huge threat.

How would you describe Vincent’s journey this season?

Vincent’s challenge this season is learning to be in a committed relationship as this creature that he is. He needs to really accept who he is and accept who Catherine is and accept that they’re meant to be together. “Who am I?” was season two and “Who are we?” is season three. That is the greatest challenge, not the life and death situations [they face] but the situation of love and lust.

I know it’s a little early to chat about season four but what can you tease?

We finished shooting 4x01 [on Tuesday]. We had a cast and writers meeting before pre-production and we got a rundown from Brad Kern, our showrunner, and I’m way excited for season four. Already the tone of the show is a little lighter than season three. That’s definitely more fun to play and I definitely have more freedom to develop Vincent’s character even more in season four. There’s only so much crime-fighting you can do. Finding those more human, comedic moments is something I get to do in season four.

So Vincent and Cat: The Comedy Hour in season four?

Yeah! Season three is a blood-curdler and season four is love and laughs.

- Kristin Kreuk habla sobre la nueva amenaza en la Season 3 de "Beauty and the Beast" (IGN):
Kristin Kreuk habla sobre la nueva amenaza en la Season 3 de "Beauty and the Beast"
By Eric Goldman 10 Junio, 2015

Most of the time, when the new season of a TV show is beginning to air, its future beyond that is still a question mark. But not the CW’s Beauty and the Beast. While the series’ third season was held for a summer launch this year, it has already been renewed for Season 4 by the network.

I spoke to the show’s star, Kristin Kreuk, about what’s in store for Catherine and Vincent in Season 3 and the oddity of talking about one season while already getting ready to work on another.

IGN: Is it strange for you to now be promoting Season 3’s debut, while you’re about to begin filming Season 4?

Kreuk: Absolutely. And it’s gonna get weirder and weirder. Once I start shooting and I’m on like, episode four, and 302 and 303 are airing, it’s gonna be confusing.

IGN: Going into Season 3, what can you tell us about the big storylines this year?

Kreuk: Vincent and Catherine are together and happy. There seems to be another threat in the world and Catherine wants to go out and fight it. She believes it’s their responsibility and their destiny to do so. Vincent just wants to be a couple, be a doctor, hang out at home, doesn’t want to deal with it. So they’re in that kind of conflict but it’s also propelling their relationship forward at the same time. And they’ve got to try to make their “normal” relationship work in the context of what’s going on.

IGN :Do you like how proactive she is and sometimes pretty gung ho?

Kreuk: Yeah, I do. I mean, it’s a failing of hers too, but she really does believe that - and she’s right, they are the only people who can stop this and that there is a responsibility to that. That those lives are their responsibility so she does take that on pretty heavily.

IGN: You talked about that big overriding threat this season. How personal might it get for them?

Kreuk: It does get very personal for them. We don’t know what it is at the top of this show. There are these dudes and they’re not beasts, but they seem to have abilities... And so we’re trying to figure out what’s going on, who would be doing this and why. They don’t seem to be coming after our two characters necessarily, so they’re doing their own thing, but we’re not sure what’s going on.

- Cómo Beauty and the Beast desafió a los malos rátings y regresa para una Season 3 y 4 (TVGuide):
Cómo Beauty and the Beast desafió a los malos rátings y regresa para una Season 3 y 4

Beauty and the Beast has had to continually triumph over low ratings and being shuffled around the CW's schedule to earn a renewal. But now that it's back with -- at least! -- two more seasons executive producer Brad Kern is putting his focus back on the heart of the show: Vincent and Cat's romance.

"In Season 2, the mandate was to broaden the characters and the reach and see if the network could attract a bigger viewership. At the time, a future pickup was dependent on that," Kern tells TVGuide.com. "It didn't work, but the good news was that the network was exceedingly happy with what we did and they really liked the pitch [for] Season 3. Luckily, the loyal audience stayed with us and they'll be happily rewarded."

The Season 2 finale saw Catherine (Kristin Kreuk) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) defeat their friend-turned-beastly foe Gabe (Sendhil Ramamurthy) as they found their way back to each other romantically. When the third season begins, the duo is in a bizarrely normal circumstance: figuring out how to be a couple. As fans are already anticipating, a proposal is also on the way, which will set the stage for the remainder of the season. But that's not to say the 13 episodes will be all puppies and rainbows. Kern warns that there are many obstacles ahead - just more relatable ones than we've seen on the show in the past.

"We're not challenging them with external threats anymore," he says. "We don't want to do that and the audience doesn't want to see it. The engagement period will run through Season 3 and will show that this wonderful romance still needs to grow. There's a difference between being engaged and being married, and there are real world and real couple issues that will be both fun and emotional for Vincent and Catherine to have to work through. We'll tie that into the overall story, leading into the discovery that Vincent and Catherine will have to be at their best in order to survive the season."

One of those internal struggles will be Catherine's past. "There's nothing like being engaged without it triggering old family issues," Kern says. "Her dad is in prison, her mom isn't there, she died, and she has a sister (Nicole Gale Anderson) who is there, but they have different recollections of their mom. So, we'll use that to delve into Cat's family backstory and a lot of revealing, cool elements that come out and help her grow."

Although this season's story is intended to be more grounded, there will be a new enemy for the season: a threat "that is worthy of Vincent's beastly skills, but not a beast!" Kern says. "The reality is that Reynolds [Ted Whittal] used Vincent to eliminate, we think, all the other beasts and there are only so many beasts Vincent can fight that can look different. So, in looking for new threats, we decided to come up with a story where innocent [people] are being experimented upon to see how far the human being can evolve. It's how they'll react as far as speed, thinking, agility, jumping, strength and what would a human look like in 10,000 years? As we discover more and more of these innocent people, we have to save and not kill them as they're trying to attack Cat and Vincent. We'll then begin to reveal the reason why the people are being experimented upon which will lead us back to our mythology."

Joining Vincent and Catherine in this fight will be the show's other couple, a pairing Kern admits he wasn't sure he wanted to see play out. "I was frankly resistant to the idea of Tess [Nina Lisandrello] and J.T. [Austin Basis] together, but Austin and Nina surprised me and [CW President] Mark Pedowitz with this wonderful chemistry," he says. "It's something we'll be further developing. I look at them as the more relatable couple, and through them we can enjoy the more fantasy, epic couple which is Vincent and Catherine. [Catherine and Tess'] friendship and partnership will actually be tested because of a change in their work relationship, but the goal of the season is to bring the 'Scooby Gang' together -- and that includes Heather. They're all a part of a greater destiny and the fun is how each comes to that realization in their own separate ways."

(TVLine):
Jay Ryan habla sobre la anisedad de Vincent y la pérdida de

Por Matt Webb Mitovich / 10 Junio 2015, 6:35 PM PDT

You’ll have to forgive Jay Ryan for not helping represent Beauty and the Beast at The CW’s Upfront event last month. Just know that only 6,600 miles would ever keep him apart from the drama’s passionate fans.

“I was in New Zealand, on the other side of the planet, and I couldn’t make it in time,” the Kiwi actor explains. “So I left it to the Beauty” — leading lady Kristin Kreuk (watch video) — “to take over.”

Because make no mistake, Ryan has a lot to say about Season 3, premiering Thursday at 8/7c. Here, he previews Vincent’s “big question” for Catherine, the twist that reveals a “vulnerability” in the sometime beast, the loss of something dear to “bachelor” Vincent and more.

TVLINE | All told, what’s different about Season 3?
I feel like [showrunner] Brad [Kern] is really diving unto the mythology element, which kind of unravels the greater purpose of Vincent and Catherine’s destiny, as two people together.

TVLINE | Playing an in-control, not-being-hunted, quote-unquote “domesticated” beast runs the risk of being non-exciting for the actor. What’s keeping Vincent interesting for you in Season 3?
Off the top, that’s what Vincent is kind of pining for, that normalcy in life, becoming part of the status quo and thinking that he’s going to enjoy that. But he soon realizes that the people who are around him, the ones he has been the protector of in a way, are feeling a little empty without this excitement and risk in their lives. Everyone’s in this slump while Vincent is on the up, and once he stops for a minute to marvel at the glory of his new life, he sees that everyone else is a bit off. He realizes that he has to fulfill who he is and his current purpose — and that is to protect.

TVLINE | Thank God, then, that a new threat comes along!
There’s always a new threat! Absolutely. We’re looking more at the supernatural side this year. Vincent’s in this kind of bubble of happiness, he’s about to pop the big question to Catherine, when this occurrence of the supernatural variety begins to rear its ugly head in New York City. Immediately, Catherine is back to her old self — she wants answers — while Vincent just wants to pop the question and run away from it all. But initially they don’t really know what they’re dealing with — just that it’s almost a hybrid of a human and something of the supernatural variety.

TVLINE | How will this new threat affect, or not, the next steps Vincent and Catherine were about to take?
It’s funny because Vincent is right on the edge of getting down on one knee and asking for her hand in marriage….

TVLINE | Really, he was gonna do the bended knee and all?
Absolutely! It’s The CW, man — we go all out. Red roses, candles….

TVLINE | I’ve always wondered who lights those dozens of candles. Because in truth it would take one person, like, 15 minutes.
That’s right, but through the magic of television we have the pre-lit candle, which is just an LED light, mixed in with the actual fire candles, creating a lovely setting.

But yeah, Vincent learns very quickly that in having this commitment with Catherine, he has to acknowledge what her needs and wants are. He’s on this happy plateau, but he realizes that that doesn’t work for her. It pushes him to a point where he feels so affected and hurt that Catherine wants him to continue to “unleash the beast,” it creates a bit of an anxiety in him, a bit of a vulnerability. He gets to thinking that without his darker side and without this risk in their lives, what do they have as a couple? In the end, he [decides that] if Catherine wants to continue on this journey of “fighting the good fight,” he wants that out of the way before they start their new lives.

TVLINE | And this new threat is how we keep JT and Tess (played by Austin Basis and Nina Lisandrello) in the mix?
Without JT and Tess, Catherine and Vincent would be long gone, I’m sure. [Laughs] Tess and JT are always in the shadows of those two but they are a bit of a life force for those two.

TVLINE | They really have become entertaining to watch in their own right. Great banter.
Yeah, they’ve kind of taken over the “new infancy of a relationship” that we saw with Catherine and Vincent in Season 1. They fill that need for our hungry fans who are romantic at heart. So that’s a new, blossoming relationship alongside Vincent and Catherine’s hunt for the Big Bad.

TVLINE | Nicole Gale Anderson is back full-time. Is Heather on Team Vincent yet or still coming around?
She’s still coming around, but Vincent has a great love for Heather. He’s never had that little sister dynamic in his life before — he’s always had his older brothers, who are now gone — so that whole sibling thing is very attractive to him. It’s sort of making his family unit a little stronger. And yet that also adds to Vincent’s anxiety — another one he has to keep alive!

TVLINE | What are guest stars Natasha Henstridge (The Secret Circle) and Alan Van Sprang (Reign) up to in Episode 3?
They were awesome to have come onto our show; they really brought a fun, kickass dynamic. It’s one of my favorite episodes of Season 3. They’re almost like a version of Vincent and Catherine in five to 10 years time…

TVLINE | For better or for worse?
Well, at first Vincent and Catherine think, “We have found our other couple! That we can hang with and be open with!,” because we’re sort of in the same line of work, but there’s always a twist on Beauty and the Beast. That episode also marks the end of Vincent’s sort of “bachelor beast” life as well. It may be the end of his reclusive house boat.

TVLINE | Give me one last tease for the new season. Was there anything cool and new you got to do?
Actually, in the episode with Natasha, there is a fantastic stunt sequence a la The Matrix, so we got to work with some exciting new technology. Watching Natasha in Matrix-like slow motion is definitely something to watch out for!

Productora ejecutiva de 'Beauty and the Beast' adelanta la "Temporada más romántica"
Por Megan Vick 11 Junio, 2015 8:00am PT

Season two of Beauty and the Beast ended with Cat (Kristen Kreuk) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) realizing they're more powerful together and apart and defeating Gabe (Sendhil Ramamurthy) for their chance at a normal life.

Of course it was only minutes before a mysterious organization tried to recruit them to track down other supernatural threats. Heading into season three, Cat and Vincent will have to decide if living a normal life is more important than saving the rest of the world. Executive producer Brad Kern talks to The Hollywood Reporter about the pros and cons of that decision and why this season is one for all the romantics.

How soon after the season two finale does season three pick up?

It’s a couple of months later. They have gotten their normal lives back, which is something they’ve both been trying to accomplish. We will discover they have gotten their lives back. That means that Vincent’s got his doctor’s license reinstated and he’s trying to get back to a normal life without having to worry about beast stuff. Catherine will have gotten back to her detective work, but we are going to discover that there is more in store for them. The mysterious DHS agents that saved J.T. at the end of season two have a need and a desire for Vincent and Cat to help. It will force them to decide whether they are willing to yet again sacrifice their personal lives, normal lives, for the greater good.

Will the new organization put Vincent’s humanity at risk?

Anytime he has to beast out, he’ll have to deal with that primal side of him. The early part of the season will test his ability to control his humanity. We are going to tie that in specifically to his ability to advance his relationship with Catherine. The goal of season three is to develop and deepen and build upon the Cat and Vincent relationship and romance. Everything they have to do, both separately or together whether it’s with this secret organization or just with regular life, will be a challenge to their goal, which is to develop and deepen their love.

Are there going to be more beasts besides Vincent and Gabe?

First, we’re going to discover there’s a different type of threat out there that is not beasts. Only the power of the beast and only the power of Cat and Vincent working together will be able to thwart and stop this new threat. However, as the season progresses we will begin to tie that new threat into the beast mythology.

Will Rebecca and Alistair be returning in season three?

What we’ll discover over the course of the season is that there’s a mythology that was developed and introduced into Cat and Vincent’s life with Rebecca and Alistair. That will come back in to play as the season progresses.

There’s a short order for season three, but you have been promised season four already — how does that change the structure of the season?

It’s still 13 episodes for both season three and season four. It just forces us to focus more clearly on what our season direction is for each season. It just forces us to try hard not to have any middle episodes that aren’t really that good, which can happen in a 22-episode order sometimes. Every episode has to be good and tell a convincing story.

What do you want fans to get out of season three?

The romance. We were forced for a variety of reasons to try and expand the world and break up Cat and Vincent to discover more about them individually. We had to threaten their relationship from external love and forces. This season, the goal was for us to lean into Cat and Vincent and make their love and the growth of their love the center of the show. The overarching goal of the season is for Cat and Vincent to build upon their love. They need to save that over all else. It will by far be our most romantic season yet.

Are you seeing [season four] as the final season?

Every season is always a proving ground to try and do our best to tell a season story that rewards the loyal audience for watching every episode. Also setting up a compelling season finale that sets up another season. I always look at my job the same way at the beginning of every season, which is to do everything I can to assume that the show is always on the bubble and that we need to do everything we can to get the network to pick us up for one more season. I never look at any season I’m on at the beginning of the season and do anything other than build toward another season beyond this one.

Jay Ryan sobre los románticos planes de Vincent y la nueva amenaza de la Season 3
Por Jolie Lash 11 Junio, 2015 11:23 AM EDT

The wait is over. "Beauty and The Beast" roars back to The CW on Thursday night, bringing good things for Jay Ryan's Vincent Keller.

"We pick up in the best sort of headspace that Vincent's been in for a long time really, since the atrocities of him taking his turn as a medical experiment," Jay told Access Hollywood over the phone from the set of "BATB" in Toronto. "He has been exonerated and he's also been reinstated in his original profession – as a doctor. He really is in his happy place. All the loose ties of his darker past have been tied up in a nice little bow, he's fully in love and he's part of society now."

With a little normalcy under his belt, the man who was previously poked, prodded, experimented on and forced to hunt down his own kind is ready for some conventional romance with his love, Catherine Chandler (Kristin Kreuk).

"He's at that point where he's ready to take that next step of commitment in his relationship with Catherine," Jay said.

VinCat cuddled up and smooching on a park bench in New York City was the romantic final portrait "BATB" painted when it closed out Season 2 in July 2014, and in Thursday's "The Beast of Wall Street" episode, the next step involves a sparkler.

"I think Vincent feels that [all the] loose ends of being exposed and being chased down by Muirfield and Catherine's other evil lovers -- a la Gabe -- have all been taken out of the equation and he is in a safe little bubble and he sort of returns to his former glory before he became this creature. So, he thinks that he's got everything under control now and now is a good time to take it to the next level and pop the question," Jay told Access.

Beasties can also expect Vincent to share a little love advice with his best friend, JT Forbes (Austin Basis), who is moving toward the next step in his relationship with Tess (Nina Lisandrello).

"I think Vincent is much more aware of his buddy also needing love in his life, just as much as Vincent needs it to heal the darker sides of himself, so he definitely tries to lend a hand in the way that guys do, I guess, giving him some tips on how to treat the ladies, to keep them coming back," Jay laughed. "But obviously, Vincent's not that great at that kind of thing either and he still has a lot to learn himself, so he could send his buddy in the wrong direction."

It wouldn't be "Beauty and The Beast" without a heavy dose of danger and outside of the romance, Season 3 introduces new threats. Expect those FBI agents who helped Vincent out at the end of Season 2 to start demanding some payback.

"Yeah, [the FBI guys are] the people that Catherine and Vincent made this deal with… to create Vincent's new identity and sweep everything under the carpet, so they can start afresh. Now they kind of withdraw on that offer, as these people usually do in society, and they are at a point where these new occurrences of kind of the supernatural variety have started to [flare] up in New York City again, and it's just at the moment where Vincent is in a safe bubble," Jay said.

Getting back in the supernatural tracking game isn't exactly where Vincent wants to go now that things on the beast front have simmered down. For Catherine though, it's her calling.

"This kind of excites Catherine," Jay said. "And she tries to, I guess, convince Vincent that this is part of their bigger journey, of their purpose in this world."

"Beauty and The Beast" returns Thursday, June 11 at 8/7c on The CW.

- Kristin Kreuk habla sobre la Season 3, los Beasties y ‘Smallville’ (CBR):
Kristin Kreuk habla sobre la Season 3, los Beasties y ‘Smallville’
Por Scott Huver 11 Junio, 2015 at 8:58am PST

It’s been a long stretch between seasons of “Beauty and the Beast,” but star Kristin Kreuk promises Season 3 will be worth the wait.

As the cult CW series kicks off a more compact 13-episode summer run tonight, the actress reprises her role as Catherine Chandler, whose romantic relationship with the beastly Vincent (Jay Ryan) finally has been exposed to the world. Whether that’s a good development or a bad one will be at the center of much of the storyline.

Speaking with SPINOFF, Kreuk offered a few tantalizing teases about the likely rocky road ahead for the star-crossed couple, the introduction of each of their extended families, the pioneering qualities of her previous series “Smallville,” and the intense devotion of the international fan base known as the “Beasties,” whose dedication has already guaranteed a fourth season.

Spinoff Online: What were the elements that got you particularly excited about the third time around?

Kristin Kreuk: What’s interesting about this season is that Vincent and Catherine are together through the season, so it’s not a “will they/won’t they” kind of story. They’re together, but how do they handle it? And how do they handle differing opinions on things? Like in the beginning, we find out Catherine has been withholding certain information from Vincent, while Vincent’s happily been leading this very normal existence and wants to continue leading this normal existence, but she’s starting to question whether or not that’s possible and that kind of drives the beginning of the story. But it’s really very much about their relationship, than about them coming together.

Which new sides or new elements of Catherine were intriguing for you to dig into this time around?

Well, I think what’s interesting for Catherine this season is that she’s kind of wrestling with … it’s not a secret that there’s a proposal that comes up pretty soon in the beginning of the season. She begins to process, I think, in part what that means and how is it possible to have like a normal, healthy relationship with somebody in the midst of the drama that Vincent and Catherine are always going through. So I felt that was interesting this year, for sure.

With a more condensed set of episodes to tell your story, what’s been the effect on the season? Did you see that as a positive thing in terms of telling the story?

Yeah, I do think that, generally, 22 episodes is too many [laughs]. I kind of like having a 13-episode season. I think it allows for more concise storytelling where you don’t have to drag things out. So that was really lovely for us to be able to do something short like that.

What’s it been like to have the opportunity to evolve the Catherine/Vincent relationship with Jay Ryan, and to have that experience of growing these characters out?

It’s been great. Jay is a pretty special actor, and I think he’ll go on to do really, if he wants to, really fantastic work. And I feel lucky that I get to work with someone who’s so naturally skilled. He just makes things work, and makes them interesting, and I love that. And in regards to characters, it’s fun for us because for me I think that we both want the best for these two characters. And we want for there to be drama, but we want for these two people to always be involved. And I think that that’s a big part of what the fans respond to.

Am I right that we’re going to see some new family members pop up?

Yeah, definitely! You’re going to see new family members from both sides of the family, from Catherine and from Vincent’s side. There are many ways in which they need to reconcile their pasts before they can move forward as a team. Especially for Catherine because there are some things that subconsciously are pulling her into a past, and she needs to let go of those things and heal those things before she can move forward with Vincent.

What has it meant to you to have started your career on what is now a complete genre, the superhero series? “Smallville” set the model for so many of the shows that are hits today.

The CW is littered with superhero show these days. Back when it was the WB, it was pretty much just us. So it’s pretty neat to see the evolution. I didn’t realize at the time when we were shooting “Smallville” that superheroes would make the comeback that they have. It feels like every other movie and pretty much every other television series is based on a comic book these days, which is neat.

It’s funny, because I think “Smallville” is making a bit of a comeback in Canada because [a national network is] airing all the episodes, so there’s a new generation that’s starting to watch it. I get recognized: I was at my sister’s wedding in Corona and this little girl came up to me and she was like, “Oh, my God, I love ‘Smallville’ so much!” And I was shocked because that age group could never watch the show, and I realized that “Smallville” is so innocent – so innocent –compared to what’s out there now.

Speaking of fans, not just the show, but the whole “Beauty and the Beast” myth has such a passionate fan base; it still continues to resonate with people. After your involvement in the show for three seasons, what has that come to mean to you — that sort of broader “Beauty and the Beast” love that’s out there?

Well, there’s a couple of distinctions. There’s people that fell in love with this show — the Beasties — and they are super-passionate. And they’re not tied one way or the other to the original story of “Beauty and the Beast,” and they’re, like, in their own league. They’re just awesome fans. Then there are the people that have followed all the “Beauty and the Beast” stories. I think any iconic tale, anything that’s become sort of mythological in our pop culture, I think the scenes are so universal. And that’s the intent. Like every fairy tale has a moral, and every superhero story is generally good versus evil. There’s something that appeals to us that’s very primitive. And that’s cool that people can tap into that in any incarnation.

And on the topic of specifically the “Beasties,” your show’s devoted fans, their passion has guaranteed you a fourth season.

Yeah, they are the reason. I hope they know. I think they know. But they are the reason that we are still here. The fact that this show is still going is because they have worked so hard to keep it on the air. And I feel like they have ownership of it, and they should.

What do you love about them – especially the fact that they’re such an international group of fans?

They are. Well, they’re funny because I think that they come together really strongly online. It’s interesting because guest stars come on the show, and the minute they announce that they’re on the show, they get bombarded with Beastie love. And questions, of course, because they’re always curious as to what’s going on and who’s playing what, and if there’s another love interest, which makes them really angry all the time. So they are really unique.

I asked someone over here at The CW which shows have the most intense fans. It really seems to be “Beauty and the Beast” and “Supernatural,” which I thought was really interesting that our fans are so intense, and I think that a part of that is because the show’s constantly on the bubble. They never know if it’s going to come back, and they really, really are invested in it.

The CW’s Beauty and the Beast is back this week, with Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan) ready to move his relationship with Catherine Chandler (Kristin Kreuk) forward in a big way. But with the supernatural world always stirring up trouble, can these two ever have a normal life?

EW caught up with Ryan to get the scoop on potential new threats, Vincent’s “happy place,” and what a fairy-tale ending would look like for Vincent and Catherine. Hint: It might not be what you’d expect.

Beauty and the Beast returns Thursday, June 11 at 8 p.m. ET to the CW.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tell us about the threats that were alluded to in last season’s finale?
RYAN: The DHS agents come into the picture at the end of last season/the beginning of season 3, with a deal that’s almost too good to be true from Vincent’s perspective. And that’s that they’ll exonerate him, they will sweep of the darkest sides of him under the carpet for what he has accomplished—what him and Catherine have accomplished—in helping out this agency. However, we open up season 3 with Vincent kind of in his happy place; he has this very comfortable bubble around him and he thinks that things have come full circle, and he’s got the life back that he had before all of the atrocities of the medical experiments he had undertaken. He feels like these DHS agents are in the background; they’re keeping everything under wraps, and Vincent and Catherine can progress in their life and also their commitment to each other.

So, Vincent gets ready to pop the question, he’s rearing up for that. But these agents—as they do in these big, bad agencies—withdraw that offer because there have been these occurrences of the supernatural kind, I guess, which have started popping up all over the city. These agents go to Catherine at first, knowing Vincent isn’t going to be happy about being pulled back into the fight. So, they convince Catherine to try to convince Vincent, and Vincent is not too happy with the sight of anything supernatural or creature-like in his life anymore. At the perfect time for Catherine and Vincent to commit to each other, this huge conflict of a larger threat [starts] rearing its head.

So, this will obviously be a roadblock for Vincent and Catherine’s relationship. What other roadblocks can we expect coming up for the two of them?
I think the yin and the yang of having a healthy side of fighting the supernatural, the mythology side of the story, and also the intimate side of their relationship. And having those two aspects sit happily together so that Vincent feels satisfied and Catherine also feels satisfied in life and in love. He’s certainly ready to pop the question, but he soon realizes that Catherine is feeling a little empty in life with this co-habitation—the almost suburban-like quality of their relationship, which Vincent has been pining for. Catherine unleashes her truth on him, and that is who are they together without the risk and turmoil and excitement of the big fight that she believes they are destined to carry out.

That’s a big kick to Vincent’s ego, and it makes him very vulnerable. He thinks, without this darker side which he has just managed to put a lid on, do they have anything else? Do they have any other dynamic in their relationship that’s going to keep them going? Last season—season 2—the mantra for the writers was, “Who am I as individual characters?” Season 3 is very much, “Who are we?” in terms of Catherine and Vincent, Tess (Nina Lisandrello) and J.T. (Austin Basis), and also the dynamic of all of them together as a family unit. All of those boundaries will be tested this season.

Is there a side of Vincent that you want to explore more but you haven’t had a chance to? Especially now you’re filming season 4, is there something you want to tap into a little more?
I really would’ve liked to have played with the more supernatural side to the beast, and seeing how that would develop within his DNA and in his system—possibly creating new powers that arise within him. That’s something we touch on in season 3 and possibly season 4. I think that kind of bubbling effect of the beast inside of him can throw Vincent out of whack—I like that kind of Jekyll and Hyde side of him. It’s nice to see that kind of imbalance in those characters every now and then and see who takes the lead in an episode: is it his darker side or his more human side that takes control?

What are you most excited for fans to see this season?
I’m really excited for them to see this dynamic of Vincent wanting to lead this normal life and pop the question, while Catherine is more head-to-toe on discovering her true identity and her family’s purpose within this whole beast mythology. It’s this really intricate season. There’s a lot of information, there’s a lot of new characters, and they are all very much interwoven in the episodes. It’s not until the last three episodes of season 3 that we really start to see bigger answers. I’m excited for the audience to dive into the mythology a little bit more this season, and also they’re going to get more of a taste of the romantic element that I think they enjoyed in the first season. I think we’re sort of getting the balance right, now that we’ve done one and two; we know what works and we can mix that together.

We did an interview with Kristin (Kreuk) last week, and she talked about her dream ending for Catherine and Vincent. What would be your fairy-tale ending for the two of them?
Good question. [Laughs] I really haven’t thought about it that much, but I can just read the script and say the lines. [Laughs] Their fairy-tale ending? I think for Vincent, I don’t know if it would ever fly, but I think it’d be interesting if their fairy-tale ending is that Catherine also forms half of her side, perhaps her darker beast side, and they can live together as half-beast, half-human.

That’s really interesting, because Kristin mentioned her happily ever after would be for the two of them to have a more “normal” life.
I think it would add an interesting layer—Kristin will hate me for even pitching this—but if she did form a beast side to her, I think it’d be an interesting way for the show to go. It’ll probably never happen.

- Kristin Kreuk comparte las novedades sobre "Beauty And The Beast" (star2):
Kristin Kreuk comparte las novedades sobre "Beauty And The Beast"
Por Kenneth Chaw 17 Junio, 2015

Kristin Kreuk is no stranger to portraying fairytale characters, what with her playing the fairest in all the land in the 2001 TV film Snow White, and her current lead role on the crime procedural Beauty And The Beast (BATB) which finds its roots in the classic fairy tale.

It wouldn’t be entirely out of the question, then, for the brunette beauty with soft round eyes, best known for her role as Lana Lang in Smallville, to try out for Belle in the 2017 live-action Disney film of the tale as old as time (though the role has gone to Emma Watson).

“I didn’t know about it and probably wouldn’t have auditioned for it. They were probably looking for an A-list movie star. I love Emma Watson. I think she’s a fantastic person from what I’ve seen externally. I think it’s a great choice. I’d love to see what they do with the show,” says the 32-year-old actress during a phone interview with Star2.com from New York City.

It’s just as well since she is busy working on BATB which will be returning tonight for a third season and has been renewed for a fourth season.

BATB is a crime procedural loosely based on the 1987 series of the same name which thrives on the romance between crime-solving duo New York Police Department Detective Catherine Chandler (Kreuk) and doctor-turned-supersoldier Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan).

But it seems the universe is conspiring against the lovers. In the first season, we saw the two keeping their relationship under wraps for the most part, with the beast-like Vincent often going into hiding. Last season saw Vincent’s memory completely wiped out.

In the S3 opener, these star-crossed lovers are finally getting their happily ever after. Or so it seems …

“This season, she’s in a strange position where Vincent and her are together, and are happy. But she’s feeling like perhaps there’s something more; they have a destiny that is beyond them being together and being in love. She’s in conflict with Vincent, who just wants to be a doctor and lead a normal life,” the Canadian shares.

The actress adds she can identify with what her character is feeling: “Catherine is career-oriented, strong and driven. But she struggles with balancing her personal life and career as a detective and a beast hunter. I can relate to that to a degree. I don’t feel like the traditional markers of growth necessarily – you know, like get married, have kids – apply to me.”

However, with the show’s primary antagonist out of the picture, what bigger purposes does Catherine hope to serve? Fans will remember that on last season’s finale, Vincent and Catherine learned there are still threats out there – people with superhuman abilities.

“The beginning of the season is about facing what turns out to be this superpower threat. They don’t seem to be beasts, but they seem to have power.

“So the bigger question is where are these people coming from and who is controlling them? Or are they independent entities?” she teases.

Catherine may be all excited to save the world, but it seems the couple’s differences in priorities will drive a wedge between them once more.

Then again, maybe not all is lost as Vincent and Catherine come across Homeland Security agents Bob (Alan Van Sprang) and Carol (Natasha Henstridge) and begin to look to them as their relationship mentors.

“They look a lot like them. They’re professionals who do a lot in the world and are still a couple,” she says.

“When they start working together, they discover a whole bunch of things about them that they didn’t know before which becomes a considerably important aspect of the third season.”

Ratings for BATB have been tepid, although the show seems to be doing well on other platforms and among international audiences.

Regardless, Kreuk says she is just focused on doing a good job: “As actors, if you get caught up with ratings, that’s problematic. I feel that’s more in the realm of the producers and writers looking at how they can make the show more appealing to a broader audience.”

Perhaps its new 13-episode format will help shake things up. The actress says she prefers the shorter season, allowing for a more thorough exploration of the characters.

“You don’t get caught in episodes where you’re like, ‘what are we doing?’ Twenty-two is so many. It won’t change the structure too much, it just means the story will move more quickly,” she asserts.

It’s a good thing for Kreuk personally, too, as it gives her more time to pursue her other interests. Kreuk, who will be given a producer credit in the fourth season, hopes to shift gears and go into producing eventually. So far, she says she has been working on churning out ideas for TV shows and pitching them.

And when she’s not doing that, she enjoys painting, travelling, reading and enrolling in courses. Kreuk, who lives in Vancouver, says she seldom attends events. (“I’m very introverted. It’s hard for me to do that.”)

The actress has been in the industry for 15 years now and has been able to maintain a scandal-free image all the while.

She offers: “I think I’m boring. It’s not like I’m hiding something. I’m honestly me, but what I do and how I am really doesn’t lend to a lot of scandalous press. I prefer to watch documentaries and hang out at home. That’s just the way that I am.”

Catch Beauty And The Beast tonight at 9pm on RTL CBS Entertainment HD (HyppTV Ch 616).

“She changes a lot and I like that about her … she just wants to live a normal life, so that’s interesting to play,” Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk, who plays Catherine “Cat” Chandler in “Beauty & the Beast,” told the Inquirer in an exclusive phone interview.

Kreuk, who was in New York City for a CW Network press event, returns to playing the intrepid detective in the hit series. (Season 3 airs Wednesdays, starting tonight at 9, on RTL CBS Entertainment.)

The show is a reboot of the 1987 drama series that starred Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman. Kreuk is paired with Jay Ryan, who plays Vincent Keller, the titular man-beast.

The actress, 32, played Lana Lang, the love interest of Clark Kent in the sci-fi-superhero prequel series “Smallville,” in the early 2000s.

She revealed an interest in branching out to a related career, eventually. “I want to be a producer after I finish acting,” Kreuk said, confidently.

She’s already preparing. When not busy filming episodes, Kreuk is focused on conceptualizing possible projects and pitches. She revealed, however, that that’s not all she does during her down time: “I’m learning to draw. I love yoga. I like reading; it’s a passion of mine. I like to educate myself.”

How do you feel about the show deviating from the ’80s series?

It’s very different from the original series, from what I know of it. In the original, Linda Hamilton played a lawyer, and Vincent lived in the underground of New York City. It was a very different experience. We’re based on that show, but it’s an entirely different series, with the same theme—which I feel a lot of fairy tales and iconic mythology can do over and over again, recreate the same theme but in a different context.

How has television changed since the “Smallville” days?

I feel like it’s very different. It’s funny because in Canada, “Smallville” is kinda having a resurgence because of this Netflix-like network called Crave, which is replaying all those old episodes.

I went to my sister’s wedding not that long ago in British Columbia, and this little girl, she must’ve been 8 years old, came up to me. She was a huge fan of “Smallville”! Back in the day, when the show aired, our fans weren’t that young.

I realized that television has become, for younger people, [a medium that] offers a lot more stuff. Interests, values, views of the world have changed. But I also think that television has changed … people are now watching online and there are so many content providers, and the means to get content. The old ways of measuring have become obsolete. People are [finding] new ways to measure and to capture audiences. So I feel like there’s been a surge of creativity, perhaps due to that. That’s why we’re seeing what they call the “golden age” of television.

How different is the American entertainment industry now?

We’re becoming a more international community. A show like “Beauty & the Beast” has thrived because of an international audience. It can stay on the air in the United States because of it. Perhaps that’s a very broad statement, but I think that’s at least partially true. I feel like there’s more of an interest in an international market than ever before.

How would you describe “Beauty & the Beast” fans?

“Beauty & the Beast” fans are super-passionate and they’re engaged in a way that has caused this show to continue to be on the air. I asked the CW publicists, “Which fans are the most passionate?” Our fans and “Supernatural” fans are apparently some of the most passionate. They’re also thoughtful and kind, and I appreciate that.

How comfortable are the cast members with each other now?

We’re a pretty comfortable cast. We’re pretty goofy and we like to have a good time. It was lovely because they got Nicole Gale Anderson on as pretty much a regular … a wonderful addition (as Cat’s sister Heather); she’s light, young, energetic and funny. It’s nice for Catherine to have a family member around. We’re a good group. If you’ve seen the bloopers, we’re pretty much a bunch of idiots!

Who are your artistic influences?

I love Cate Blanchett. She has kind of been my favorite since I saw her in “Elizabeth.” I’m influenced by many things. I love going out and experiencing art, all different kinds—photography, sculpture, jewelry, textiles, pottery. My house is filled with creepy, wacky art. I’m inspired by a lot of things!

Volver a “Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk)”
