Following a tremendously well received first season, The Flash is back on Tuesday for Season 2. Per usual for this series, a key element is that things move fast, both where the main character is concerned and in plotting, and Season 2 will be introducing a ton of new elements from the comic books.

I sat down with The Flash’s showrunner, executive producer Gabrielle Stanton, to talk about what’s to come in Season 2, including Jay Garrick, Zoom, Wally West, Earth 2 and more.

The Flash Showrunner Talks Jay Garrick, Zoom and More in Season 2

Gabrielle Stanton on how the writers want to go even bigger this year.

By Eric Goldman Following a tremendously well received first season, The Flash is back on Tuesday for Season 2.

IGN: You’re bringing in Jay Garrick. How will Barry react to someone who is a counterpart in such a way?

Gabrielle Stanton: We definitely have a spin on him. He’s going to be, kind of in that classic Jay Garrick way, a little bit older. He’s a little bit more of the Flash that you expected from the comic book. Our Barry is a young Barry, a little bit geekier. He’s going to kind of play mentor a little bit to Barry this season. He’s going to have seen a little bit more, done a little bit more and as Barry is understanding his powers and what he can do, Jay’s going to be there to mentor him and teach him the next steps toward becoming an even better Flash.

IGN: Jay is from Earth 2. How many realities are you guys delving into?

Stanton: We’re doing Earth 2. We’re focusing. In the comic books, the possibilities are endless. I think there’s 52 out there? Don’t expect to see all 52.

IGN: It’s been very fun seeing what you’ve plucked from all facets of the comics. Has the Earth 2 introduction really expanded those possibilities even more?

Stanton: Absolutely. Last year we worked with time travel and showed what we can do with that. Having an Earth that’s like ours but not like ours is really a fun thing to play with and we’re definitely going to see different iterations of playing with that over the course of the season. We’re going to unravel Earth 2 a little bit slowly. So it won’t be this one thing that’s kind of shocking. I think Earth 2 is going to play a big part in some of the decisions that Barry makes over the course of this season.

IGN: You’re bringing in Wally West as well who is, like Jay Garrick, another huge part of The Flash history.

Stanton: [Laughs] No pressure for us this season at all, right?

IGN: [Laughs] No pressure at all. Can you talk about the portrayal of Wally? In the comics, he’s traditionally a sidekick but this Barry hasn’t been the Flash for very long. So how will that work with the two of them?

Stanton: I can’t tell you a whole lot. We’re keeping it all close to the chest this season. I will say that like we did last year, Andrew [Kreisberg] is great at taking the character in the comic book and giving it a little spin, making it a little different than what they are there. The Wally West you’re going to see in Season 2 of The Flash is not going to be the traditional Wally West you see in the comics.

IGN: What was it about Keiynan [Lonsdale] that made you think, “This is what we want for Wally?”

Stanton: Super fun energy. Which obviously makes sense, but he just had such a great energy about him.

IGN: Having come off Reverse-Flash, obviously you don’t want to repeat yourself too much, so what is your tactic as you approach the Zoom storyline?

Stanton: Zoom is going to be very different from Reverse-Flash in every way. Zoom is very scary. Zoom will make Reverse-Flash seem like “Oh, he’s here to sell girl scout cookies.” So that will be really fun. Yeah, he’s our big bad for Season 2 and he’s going to be bigger and badder than anything in Season 1. No question.

IGN: We know Tom [Cavanagh] is still on the show. While we saw Wells die last season, obviously just the introduction of Earth 2 makes a lot of us assume how we’re going to see him again. Anything you can speak to about that and how much of a different character he might be playing?

Stanton: We have Earth 2. We also have parallel time lines with time travel. But I can say that the Harrison Wells we’re going to meet is going to be a very different Harrison Wells than we worked with last year. Harrison Wells was really Eobard Thawne taking over his body and that informed everything he was doing. This year we’re going to meet Harrison Wells in a completely different way.

IGN: At the same time, Legends of Tomorrow is coming and some of those characters are directly from your show. Can you talk about those characters and is it an interesting challenge to further those storylines they had last season while knowing that you’re setting them up to go to this other series?

Stanton: We’re definitely going to explore their characters more this season. The challenge in setting them up for another show is, “Oh, wait, we want them on our show. Hold on Legends, you’re stealing our characters!!” Captain Cold, like we said, we’re going to learn a little bit more about him this season and then when we have the big crossover where you’ll see more characters. It’s really fun because we’re getting to play a little bit more with those characters in our world and Arrow will in their world and then we get to send them off to their own little world.

IGN: We know we’re going to meet Captain Cold and Golden Glider’s dad. Can you talk about that storyline and getting to see how far the apple falls from the tree?

Stanton: Exactly. It’s really going to give Barry some new insights into Captain Cold and he’s going to see kind of why he ended up the way he did. Thematically, it’s interesting, looking at their relationship. They’re -- I’m not even going to say Frenemies. That’s too friendly. But I think they definitely have kind of a weird bond. I think Barry is really going to see how childhood affects the man or the woman that you become. They both have these messed up childhoods and two very different paths that they took. It’s actually a really cool episode.

IGN: Things changed dramatically for Iris as she found out the truth and Eddie’s death occurred. By the end of the season, she was in Star Labs a lot but will she have a regular role there or is she a conduit now to another world, as a reporter?

Stanton: Yes and yes. Iris will definitely be a bigger part of Team Flash this year. Iris knows all the secrets and we don’t have to hide anything from her anymore. We’re also definitely going to explore her role as a reporter and how that is going to generate stories for us and generate situations where she has to come to Flash and Flash comes to her so we’re really going to integrate those two storylines more this season. Of course, the bond between them is still great friends and everything but I think we’ll be seeing a little more Iris this year.

IGN: Is it this strange scenario now for them because they have been literally told, “you are fated to be together” - but how do you react to that proclamation?

Stanton: Eddie’s death is going to hang over her for a while so in terms of how their relationship moves forward, romantically, I think that is going to be set aside a little as they lick their wounds a little bit, especially for Iris. And we have PRIVEN coming.
