- Entrevista con Emily Bett Rickards: Arrow season 3, The Flash, Felicity (denofgeek.com):
Entrevista con Emily Bett Rickards: Arrow season 3, The Flash, Felicity
Por Caroline Preece 16 Sept 2014 - 06:30

Earlier this year, Caroline chatted to Arrow's Felicity, Emily Bett Rickards, about season 2's fallout and what to expect from season 3...

Originally intended to be a one-episode guest star in Arrow’s first season, Felicity Smoak has since become a fan-favourite character embroiled in the series’ most obsessed over relationship. Season two saw her develop as more people were initiated into Team Arrow, and we spoke to Emily Bett Rickards about Felicity’s journey this year, The Flash and what might be to come in season three.

How have you felt about Felicity’s journey this season?

I felt like she became a very strong individual throughout, and I think she’s still learning about herself. She’s grown up a lot in the past season. I think she decided to make decisions herself and not for other people and also applauded herself for that. Because it’s the applause; it’s giving yourself the promotion that’s the best learning experience. So I think that’s what she did.

At the end of the season Team Arrow was back to Diggle, Felicity and Oliver – will it stay that way?

Roy’s in there too I think, and I think Roy’s in there for a good reason...

Will it be a quartet then, or is someone else coming in for season three?

I don’t know – I honestly don’t know that much about season three. This is what I can tell you – Felicity will have some backstory, because I was promised so hopefully those promises come through, and since we’re such a big ensemble show I think we’re going to get more of Thea’s story. Because season one was about Oliver being the vigilante and then season two was about him deciding to be The Arrow, so in season three we kind of have this beautiful orchestra of actors that need to expand and get their stories told.

Can you tease anything about that?

Well I’m hoping we’ll meet one of her parents or a family member. They teased it last season and we were going to but there wasn’t enough time – there’s not. I think we have a whole new season to explore so hopefully there’ll be time this year. It’s all about time really, because we only have 23 episodes [laughs], to explore all the characters.

As you probably know, the Oliver/Felicity relationship is a huge thing for fans, who’ve really latched onto it, do you enjoy having that reaction?

I do – I mean, we’re there to affect, right? So I think I like sparking, it’s fun, and I want people to get caught up in the story. That’s what we’re there for, so I want you to escape and I want you to feel like the characters are your friends because I feel like they’re mine. So I find that exciting.

How do you think that might evolve next year?

Olicity? (Laughs) I’m talking like it’s a person. No one’s ever been able to answer this question – what’s safer? To stay friends with your best friend or potentially make a move? Nobody knows.

There were a lot of passionate responses to those scenes in the finale, what would you say to fans who were a little bit upset?

I’m sorry... I mean like I said earlier, we’re just there to affect you so we’re really glad we did. We’re just really glad you felt something – I don’t care what [laughs]. It’s like when you watch a movie and you really hate a character, an evil character or something, you’re supposed to hate that character. It’s kind of like that – we want that feeling that you’re feeling, whatever you’re feeling is right. That’s one of the greatest things about reading or watching a show or a movie. You’re feelings are right no matter what, and it gives you that privilege.

Felicity even had a female friend in Sara this year...

I found a friend in Caity [Lotz] – she’s such a good person.

Do you know if she’ll be back next year?

Yeah, I think she will be. I hope so. Well, she’s not dead so I hope she’ll be back. I don’t know if I can guarantee but I haven’t heard that she’s not coming back.

Do you think that will become a reason for Felicity to get some more fight training?

Yeah it might be. I do think that Oliver and Diggle train her, we just don’t see it. Because they wouldn’t let her not be trained, it’d be irresponsible in that sense. So I think she’s learning self-defence but we just might not see it on camera. But, yeah, it’d be nice to do more.

Will she have more interaction with Laurel or Thea?

I love working with the other women on our show, but I don’t get to work with them a whole lot. Working with Katie Cassidy was fun for a split second, because I don’t get to do that a lot, but it’s always nice to work with new people. I’ve never worked with Willa [Holland] even though we’re friends.

Can you tease anything about The Flash?

I don’t know anything about The Flash. I’m so sorry [laughs]. He wakes up – there you go! Surprise! I think Felicity will show up in the show eventually. I think that’s to be expected, well, I hope. It’s been chatted about a little bit but nothing’s been promised. That’d be really fun for me. The cast is great – I worked with Danielle [Panabaker] and Carlos [Valdes], and I obviously worked with Grant [Gustin]...

Obviously Felicity and Barry had a relationship...

We never kissed though! Last time Felicity talked about him she found out from Cisco that he’s had another woman visiting him, so it’s sort of like – ‘Oh! Was I... And you’re still in a coma and I’m saving the world over here, so it’s not like I forgot about you, I’m just trying to save about a million lives...’

Would you like to be more involved in the superhero side of things?

Yeah, I would like to train a little bit more, and I do like that stuff, but I just want to see Felicity sitting on her couch in her apartment. Making a cake or something – that’s what I want her to do. I like the boring shit like seeing her taking off her earrings. We always see Felicity done. She never has her shoes off and we never really see her walk anywhere. She’s always on a mission. When she’s walking she’s trying to be kidnapped – like we all do, am I right ladies?

What are your hopes for Felicity next year?

I don’t really have that many hopes, I’m just curious to see who she becomes in the third season. Because she changed so much in the first season, she changed so much in the second season and I don’t think she’s done changing. I don’t think she’s fully grown up yet. She’s still figuring out who she is, and in a very mature and adult way – she’s very conscious about it. She’s making the decisions to change, and that’s commendable.

Arrow comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK on Monday the 22nd of September.

Entrevista a Colton Haynes: Arrow season 3, nuevos personajes de DC
Por Caroline Preece 16 Sept 2014 - 06:30

Caroline chatted to Arrow's Roy Harper, Colton Haynes, about season 3, love triangles, Arsenal, costumes and new DC characters...

With powers that may or may not be gone and his very own superhero mask, Roy Harper is poised to become more than just Oliver’s protégé when Arrow returns for its third season. Earlier this year, we caught up with Colton Haynes to discuss the state of Team Arrow, Roy's relationship with Thea, the Arsenal/Speedy issue and which new DC characters will be coming in for season three...

Congratulations on season two, it’s had a great reaction.

Thank you, it’s been a blast. And I’m very happy about that, I love the finale too. I just watched it a few days ago, and it was even better than when I read it.

How have you felt about Roy’s development this season?

I like that it’s been stretched out. I like that now, obviously they had to put Roy through a lot of things to be a hero like Oliver, and I’ve liked how they’ve given a lot of moments for Roy and Thea to develop their relationship. But now they’ve taken it away [laughs]. That’s going to be the thing I’m looking forward to the most when reading the first script, to see what’s going on with Roy and Thea. Also Oliver and Felicity. They filmed a bunch of stuff that didn’t air, which we talked about in a few interviews but it would have sent the fans... like... they would have all fainted.

It couldn’t have beaten the reaction the finale got...?

Oh, it would have been terrible. The Olicity fans would have just lost their minds. But we’ll see, maybe there’ll be more of that in season three.

In terms of Roy and Thea, obviously it ended on an unhappy note, will we see them come together quite quickly or will they be separated for a while?

I feel like the beginning of season three is going to focus a little more on the team aspect, and also how Thea’s realised that she’s been lied to by everybody. I wonder what she did to everyone else for them to be like, ‘I’m going to lie to you all the time.’? But they’re going to focus on that, and obviously now we have the bigger bad in Malcolm Merlyn who’s basically trying to kill us all. Thea’s a part of that, and I’m interested to see where Sin fits in all of this. Is Sin going to take my side or is she going to take Thea’s side? I don’t know, but that’s something I’m excited about.

There’s that lovely little trio, a kind of sub-team which people really liked...

I loved that!

...the fact that there was no complicated love triangle was nice.

You said the word of the hour, which is the season three love triangle that’s about to happen and I can hint about. I don’t know who it’s going to be, but it’s going to be pretty devastating.

With Roy involved? At the centre of it?

Yes – I don’t know if he’s the centre of it, but there is going to be new romances for a few of the main characters.

Does that mean new DC characters coming in?

Yes, new, very popular characters in the universe. So, yeah, who knows?

Roy joined Team Arrow at the end of the season, what does the team look like when we come back?

I’ve only been given a few little hints, but now Sarah’s left and given the jacket to Laurel, its like, ‘is Laurel going to be in the fold?’ I don’t know, but now everybody knows the secret identity of Oliver Queen.

You’ve got the red mask now, does that mean you’ll be in costume next year?

Well, I was supposed to be in full costume during the finale but they held it for the future, I guess just to give it its justice. So I don’t know when that’s going to be, I assume it’s going to happen and I assume everyone’s tired of the red hoodies. Roy can hopefully borrow some money from the Queens to get some new clothes, and hopefully it’s a nice outfit. We’ll see.

Will the costume be like Oliver’s?

Well I hear that it’s just tights, and then some red ballet shoes – no, I’m kidding. When you see the comic books, there are certain variations of what people think, and I’ve seen ideas. It’ll be something fresh and new.

You had powers this year, will we see any after-effects of that even though Roy was cured?

Well, with the powers they were obviously induced by a drug but, whenever you get a cure, things can always mess up. Or when people have the cure, that doesn’t mean they’re always taking the right dose. So you never know, maybe Roy’s cured and maybe he’s not.

Roy and Oliver have an uneasy partnership, now that Roy’s in the Arrow Cave, who would you like to see him bond with?

Emily’s (Bett Rickards) awesome and I love her to death, so it would be nice to work with her a little more. And David (Ramsey) is so good at making everyone laugh without trying, that it causes a storm. I just saw the season two gag real, and it’s all of us just laughing because David’s cracking everyone up. But I see some similarities between Roy and Felicity, with their dry sense of humour and their little back and forths. So that’d be a nice thing to see.

There’s been speculation that Thea could be a villain next season...

I think there’s truth in that, I mean she’s realised that everything’s not how it’s been. Thea Queen, even in season one, has a little bit of an edge to her so I could definitely see Thea and Malcolm being the big bads of season three. But whereas Malcolm doesn’t necessarily have that much of a heart, it’s going to be up to the people that really get Thea to maybe bring her away from the dark side a bit. But I could have just made all of that up...

There’s still confusion over the Red Arrow/Speedy/Arsenal issue, can you clarify anything there?

It’s funny because there was a bunch of Speedy moments that got cut, because they didn’t wanna give too much away. Basically, whenever he says Speedy, to me, it calmed me down because I thought of Thea. But that sent the fans going crazy, so Mark Guggenheim did confirm that Arsenal is the path that Roy Harper is going to go down. When that’s going to happen I’m not sure, but there’s going to be a bunch of jokes that are going to be thrown around – trying to pick which nickname that Roy will use.

So basically, throughout the season they’re going to be saying Oracle or saying Speedy, and I just shut them all down until we get to the one that Mark believes is going to be Arsenal. But there are different variations, so I don’t think I’m going to end up cutting my arm off or with the drug abuse just yet. But we have about ten more seasons left of the show so...

Can you tease anything about season three?

I can tease the possibility of someone from Roy’s past coming in and taking Roy’s mind off of Thea for a bit. And then there’s the massive new characters coming in that the fans will know. I’m not sure how soon that’ll be, but I think it’ll be pretty early in the season.

What are your hopes for Roy?

I’d love to see a little bit of Roy’s past. I know that in the first Vertigo episode in season one, we mentioned something about my mom having a very bad drug past, and I know that we are going to get to see a little bit of backstory for Felicity in the next season. There are little Easter Eggs with all of our storylines, but I do think that we’ll see a little bit more of Roy’s past due to someone that’s going to come in, bringing a lot of possible trouble to town.

Arrow season 2 is released on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK on Monday the 22nd of September.

After introducing Oliver Queen as a hooded, bow-wielding vigilante in Season One who takes on a number of colorful antagonists reminiscent of DC Comics supervillains while on a killing spree to make up for his father's sins, the second season of Arrow opened up the world of the DC Universe in a big way, while pointing Oliver toward a more heroic destiny.

As "The Arrow," Oliver didn't kill unless absolutely necessary and chose to spare the life of the most dangerous man he'd ever known at the end of the season, following a massive, almost operatic battle between a handful of DC Comics factions.

So...what's next? Arrow Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim joined ComicBook.com and a handful of reporters for a roundtable during Comic Con International: San Diego this summer to talk about it.

What are you doing in Season Three that's different from the first two years?

The best way to put it is, we're trying to take some of the lessons we learned from Season Two and trying to apply it to some of the cooler aspects of Season One.

We felt like Season Two was very successful. We do feel like it was an improvement over Season One and I think a lot of fans and a lot of critics felt the same way but there were elements of Season One that just because of the nature of the story we were telling in Season Two, we were lacking.

Such as -- Season One had a really cool, over-arching mystery. You had the glyph, you had The Undertaking, you were kind of wondering what was going on. There was what we called in the scripts the Well-Dressed Man, who turned out to be Malcolm Merlyn. And we wanted to basically take the epic quality of Season Two and fuse it with the mystery of Season One.

Hopefully, we've accomplished that and it will be all the stuff you loved from Season One combined with all the stuff you loved from Season Two. That's the over-arching approach. You guys will have to tell us if we're successful.

We've seen some characters come and go, and we hear that Tommy is going to make a dream sequence appearance...

Not a dream, a flashback, but yes!

Sara's gone. Might she be coming back as well?

Sara's back. Caity Lotz is in a recurring role. We've made a deal for three episodes but at current count, we're going to have her in for five, at least. Obviously with all of our recurring cast members, we always have to work around their schedules but we love Caity. We have really cool plans for her.

One of the things we're dying to do -- we don't know what episode it's going to be in -- we're dying to do a flashback story that basically takes Sara from the downing of the Freighter in Episode 2.23 all the way up to her time with the League of Assassins. So it would be how she met Nyssa, how she met the League of Assassins and her evolution into an assassin. That is something that's always been on our wish list.

One of the things we do enjoy about the show is that we have a large ensemble plus a large ensemble of returning, recurring actors. It's funny, when Colin Donnell filmed his death scene for episode 1.23, I went up to him and said, "I'm so glad that we do a show that uses flashbacks," and we are finally paying that off and it's really going to be fun to see Stephen and Colin share the screen again together in something that's not a hallucination.

How about Manu Bennett?

Yeah, Manu actually falls into the same category. We've got an awesome story for Slade Wilson. Obviously we didn't kill him off at the end of Season Two and it's just a matter of syncing up our schedule and his schedule and our creative timeline with his schedule, so we'd love to have him back on the show.

Do you feel any need to have the show go darker or have it be a bigger contrast to The Flash now?

No, it's funny, we don't -- but we have talked a lot in terms of how dark the flashbacks should be relative to the present day stories. As we go lighter in the present day because of Oliver's journey to being a hero, we feel an obligation to sort of balance the show out by having flashbacks that are a little bit darker in tone.

You talked about the ensemble cast -- you've had so many great female characters. Can you talk a little bit about how that was approached?

One thing that we've really strived for in the show is diversity of all forms. We're very proud of our racial diversity on the show, we're very proud of our gender diversity and having female characters who aren't just sex objects, who have agency, who are tough. I mean, Felicity Smoak is by no means an ass-kicker, but she's very tough and she has an inner steel to her. Same thing with Thea.

This year obviously Thea's going to be going through some changes because of her association with Malcolm Merlyn and that I think will bring her into more of the ass-kicking side of the spectrum, but as Malcolm said to her in Episode 23 [of Season Two], she has real steel in her; there's real iron in her. And Moira. We try with all the female characters to give them a strength but not make that strength limited to kicking ass, though we have plenty of that, obviously. I think people will be very happy with Laurel's trajectory specifically this year in that regard. She's going to start trying to walk the path that her sister walked, which is something we set up in the Season Finale and I think people are going to be really excited to see where that goes.

Can you tell us where Thea is going? There are so many Arrow sidekicks that she could be...

Well, I think it's safe to say that this year is going to be a battle for Thea's soul, so it's not necessarily going to have a happy ending to it. Certainly there is the potential in her name and we've been calling her "Speedy" since the pilot, but one of the things that we like to do is play against that expectation. So hopefully the ups and downs of Thea's arc this year will be compelling but also surprising.

Can you talk a bit about bringing in Brandon Routh as The Atom?

We never start with, "Oh, this is an actor." We always start with the character first.

And we basically went into Season Three with a couple of models in mind in terms of, on the third season of Everwood, Greg [Berlanti] brought in Scott Wolfe and really shook up the show. Third season of Buffy, Joss Whedon brought in Eliza Dushku and really shook up the show. The idea of a new character coming in and being a change agent for a set ensemble was very appealing to us. That was one parameter. Another parameter was that we had Felicity and she sort of, from a dialogue perspective, lives in a different world than everybody else. We've been saying that Emily from a witty banter perspective has been playing tennis against the wall and we wanted to give her a tennis partner.

So through that, the character of Ray Palmer started to evolve and then we just started meeting with and auditioning actors and Brandon expressed an interest in sitting down with us. We couldn't have been more thrilled. I have to say, that meeting just blew me away. I was just so entranced by him, quite frankly. He's such an incredibly nice guy, he has remarkable screen presence and takes adjustments as an actor, like an incredibly finely tuned instrument. I mean that as the highest compliment. He really can give nuance to every line and you really can fine-tune it and it's a real privilege to work with him. And his scenes with Emily are just so much fun -- they're everything I could have hoped for. We're trying to write a little bit of a Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn kind of relationship and that's something that's very much in our wheelhouse and it's just fun to see it come to life with Emily and Brandon.

I think one of the things that's fun about Brandon's character is that so many of our characters come in as proto-, "Here's Ray Palmer, here's Slade Wilson, when are they going to finish that evolution to their comic book destinies?" That's a big part of the show and the fun of the show, is when is that going to happen and how is that going to happen, and are we going to surprise you?

We have a really cool plan in mind for Brandon and he's game. We told him the very first day where we were headed with him and he's excited and we're excited, too.
