John Barrowman Habla sobre el Fingir la Muerte de Malcolm y la Season 3 (alternativenation):
John Barrowman Habla sobre el Fingir la Muerte de Malcolm y la Season 3
Por Brett Buchanan - 24 Sept, 2014

John Barrowman is one of the most charismatic presences on television in the past decade, lighting up screens in the U.K. as Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who and Torchwood, and in the last few years playing Malcolm Merlyn on The CW’s Arrow. Barrowman was the primary villain in Season 1 of Arrow as a recurring guest star, and after only a few appearances in Season 2, Barrowman is joining the cast as a series regular for Season 3, which premieres on October 8th. In this exclusive interview with AlternativeNation.net’s Film/TV section, Barrowman discusses Malcolm’s relationship with Thea, how he discovered that Malcolm’s Season 1 death was faked, the return of a former Arrow series regular, pranking Stephen Amell, and his hopes for the return of Captain Jack Harkness.

Is there anything you can say about the Malcolm and Thea relationship in Season 3? Is there real love there, has your friendship with Willa Holland affected the chemistry of the characters?

I love Willa to death, she is great. She and I have good fun and laughs on set. I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but what I can say is that Malcolm has always done things for the people that he loves dearly, he’s just misunderstood in the way that he does them (laughs). The thing with this is you’re going to possibly see slightly different tactics from Malcolm. He’ll still have his physical aspects and everything, with the fighting and the archery, but he lost people in the past through his seeking of vengeance through power and money, so he’s going to try to use emotion this time a bit, and see how that fares. But his relationship with Thea is going to be dysfunctional, uncomfortably dysfunctional at times, and his relationship with Oliver is going to develop, which is interesting.

Do you think Malcolm is headed on a path to be a bit of a better person?

That I don’t know. I’ve only gotten the scripts that we have shot, and that are being shot at the moment. I don’t have anything beyond that, so I don’t know what’s to come. To be honest with you, as the actor who plays Malcolm, and this goes with all of the other characters I’ve played too, I like seeing the script just before we start to shoot, because it’s like, ‘Wow, I’ve got to do this.’ That’s the challenge for me, to do things differently. I still want him to be heroesque, or anti-hero. But it would be nice to see if he became a little more compassionate with things, but people like him as a bad guy. That’s the thing, I would tell the writers if they were sitting in front of me, ‘Don’t change him to the extent where people go, why did they make him a good guy?’ I mean unless they want to give him his own spinoff show (laughs).

Mentioning that, do you think that Malcolm is the type of character who could ever fully find redemption? Do you think that’s an arc that could even happen with Malcolm, with what he’s done?

Well his whole journey of life is to find redemption. I don’t think it’s an arc of a story, that’s more of an arc of a life, because he’s been doing the wrong thing for so long in other people’s eyes, that his whole life is going to be about redemption. Things are going to go wrong along the way, I hate to use the word again, on his redemption path. So I wouldn’t say it’s an arc of a story, because no one, not even in television, can resolve that kind of thing in a couple of episodes. That’s a life arc, if that makes sense, so that would be the character’s arc for the rest of the series, but with other smaller minor arcs that are underneath, and underlying.

You mentioned Malcolm and Thea a bit earlier, how physical is Willa Holland getting now on set? Have you taught her any archery with your experience?

I’m not gonna tell you what she’s doing because I’ll get in trouble!

There’s a preview out there with her holding a bow and arrow!

Pretty physical. Thea’s been, Willa’s been working hard, see how I blended the two into one there! Willa’s been working really hard doing training, she’s been getting more involved in the action sequences, which is really really great to see her do that. She’s also giving herself a challenge because she’s never done anything like that before. The first day we were doing one where she was actually doing some of the stunt sequences, she was really excited, and very nervous, and it’s very rare that you see Willa nervous.

When it comes to the cast, you haven’t worked with a lot of them since Season 1, last year who you worked with was pretty limited. Without spoiling, which actors have you worked with this season who you haven’t worked with since Season 1, and are there people like Colton Haynes who you are working with for the first time?

When you say work with them, I mean there’s been things where I’ve come into scenes where they have just walked out (laughs), so yes I have worked with others. But I think that dynamic is going to hopefully change throughout the course of Season 3, because at the moment I have just been involved with Thea and Oliver. I mean Colton was in a sequence, but we didn’t have any confrontation. As usual, all of us will have these scenes, and it’s building to a bigger thing, that’s always what happens. I’d love to do some stuff with the character Felicity, obviously I’d love to do stuff with Roy, and it would also be interesting to see how Malcolm would deal with Laurel at this point as the commissioner.

Near the end of Season 1, you’ve mentioned this before but it was kind of vague, did the writers outright tell you that Malcolm wasn’t really dead, after it looked like you were dead in the finale?

I knew he wasn’t dead. When I read the script I thought, ‘Oh my god, he’s dead.’ Then in the read through they didn’t say anything, then I thought, ‘Oh my god, he really is dead.’ Then in the next couple of days I went to Andrew [Kreisberg], and I asked, “Is he dead?” He said, “No no no, my god no.” He reiterated to me, ‘We told you when you started this, that Malcolm is going to be a continual presence throughout any series that we do of Arrow, because that’s what Malcolm Merlyn is in Starlin City. He’s the resident bad guy in that sense, and we’ll facilitate either others, or he’ll be doing his own stuff.’ I did know last year before Christmas that I was going to be a regular, so things had always been in discussions, it was just a matter of when it was going to happen.

In that same episode where it looked like you were dead, Tommy actually did die. Do you remember being around Colin Donnell during the shooting of that episode, and what his feeling was knowing that he was going to die?

I didn’t see Colin, this is what’s really weird, I wasn’t there for when he was filming his death sequence. The weirder thing was when I was told I was a regular, I rang up Susanna [Thompson] to talk to her, because I thought, ‘We’re going to get some more great stuff together.’ She said, “They’re killing me.” (Laughs) Nobody told me. Anyways, with Colin’s character, I never really thought of it like that, because with TV shows things happen, they have to change the dynamic of things. There’s reasons why they do it, and some of it we don’t know, but it’s nice that his character has come back kind of as a spirit. We’ll see what happens in the future, we shall see. God, I can’t tell you stuff! I can’t tell you anything!

(Laughs) It’s cool, you’ve said good stuff. What’s the funniest prank you’ve pulled on the Arrow set, at least one you can tell?

Well I haven’t gotten to pull that many yet, because my filming is limited with certain people, and it’s kind of dull if I keep doing it all the time. But about a week or so ago Stephen [Amell] and I just finished filming a sequence, and I ran off doing [dance moves] down at the staircase singing ‘Shoot That Poison Arrow Through My Heart,’ an old 80’s song. So just silly things like that, but I make sure we get the work done before I have a laugh. But there’s plenty more pranks to come, trust me (laughs).

Here’s a fan question: I’d like to know if he altered his voice as the Dark Archer in S1 (even before the sound FX guys worked their magic), and if he could give us a sample of what it would sound like.

I didn’t really, they added a little bit of tweak to the voice to do stuff, but that’s my voice. I am a vocal genius (laughs). Not only can I sing, but I can manipulate my voice to [does Dark Archer voice] to sound like somebody else. (Laughs) Just say that I am a vocal genius, of course it’s me!

"Arrow" stars Caity Lotz and Emily Bett Rickards joined Jonah Weiland on the world famous CBR Yacht at Comic-Con International in San Diego to talk about the upcoming third season of The CW's hit super hero series. Rickards spoke about injecting humor into the series as Felicity Smoak and her chemistry with Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen. Lotz discussed her experiences joining the cast in the second season as Sara Lance and her relationship with Nyssa (Katrina Law). Rickards also teases whether or not things might heat up between Oliver and Felicity in Season 3...

Rickards on bringing humor into the show as Felicity: "It was something that sort of came naturally but it made me realize that that is exactly what I want to do, so I'm very happy that I am the comedy outlet for the show and I've realized that -- and it may change in the future -- but comedy is definitely the way I want to go," said Rickards.

Rickards on her chemistry with "Arrow" lead Stephen Amell: "We're good friends. I'm so lucky to have found a friend in Stephen and all the cast," said Rickards. "And Caity, too -- we just do Tarot cards every week, which is really lame. [Laughs] We really do. I feel really lucky. Our whole cast is sort of, we've come into our own little group of love."

Lotz on joining the cast with Season 2 and playing such a pivotal role: It's always good to be referred to as invading. That's like, 'Your presence is invading,' that sounds awesome!," Lotz said with a laugh. "No, it's been -- it was really cool. Everyone was super nice. It didn't take -- I think a little bit, I kind of kept to myself, and my character was very guarded anyway so that always like bleeds into life. It took me a little bit to kind of like get into the groove with everybody, and it's been so much fun. I've had so much fun. It's awesome."

Lotz on her character's relationship with Nyssa being handled just like any other: "Because it is. And actually, I really love that we brought it up in the show because gay and lesbian are like a huge thing, the fact that it's even an issue still is ridiculous to me," said Lotz. "I think they brought it into the show very -- it's casual, it's not this like scandalous thing."

"It wasn't on a pedestal, it was just a relationship," said Rickards.

"It's just about love. And it's, you know, it doesn't matter who you connect to, how you connect if it's true to you and you feel that person," Lotz continued. "I think that the story really stayed true to that and I respect that and I'm glad that I got to be a part of it and hope that I bring kind of more awareness to that kind of stuff."

On the 'will they/won't they' tension between Felicity and Oliver: "It's not up to me. It's up to Felicity, and I think she does love Oliver and I think they do have a connection and it's beautiful," said Rickards. "But that beauty can be ruined so easily and so quickly, which is probably why they haven't gotten together in the first place. And relationships are so complicated -- any relationship is so complicated -- and then they have life and death at stake every single day. Love is love."

In what has become typical Arrow fashion, the action is big and the personal drama is even bigger. When the show returns to The CW on October 8th, crime in Starling City is at an all-time low, thanks to the Arrow (Stephen Amell) and his team, and Oliver thinks he can finally balance being both the Arrow and Oliver Queen. But of course, that doesn’t last long, and Team Arrow will face new villains and still be feeling the ramifications of the events of last season.

During this recent interview to talk about what’s to come for Season 3, executive producer Marc Guggenheim talked about how this season’s premiere is a good jumping on point for new viewers, that they already have the whole season planned out, Oliver and Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) first date and first kiss, what Ray Palmer is planning, whether he might ever shrink himself and wear a costume, what Brandon Routh brings to the show, the exploration of the theme of identity, Roy Harper (Colton Haynes) as part of Team Arrow, what Thea (Willa Holland) has been up to, when the H.I.V.E. storyline might reappear, and the cross-over with Arrow and The Flash. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: How would you like to preview Season 3 of Arrow?

MARC GUGGENHEIM: I feel like this episode is a really good jumping on point for new viewers. We closed a chapter at the end of Season 2, and this is a brand new opening. I don’t really think there’s anything you need to know, coming into it. It’s pretty new viewer friendly. And that wasn’t necessarily by design. It just happened to work out that way with the story that we’re telling.

How much of this season do you already have planned out?

GUGGENHEIM: Every season, we spend what really should be our hiatus, and what really should be me relaxing on a beach, planning out the whole season. It’s what we did in Season 1, and it’s what we did in Season 2, so we did the same process in Season 3. We just started off talking about what the season is about. I’ve spoken at length, at this point, that it’s about identity, and we talked about what Oliver’s journey for the year is going to be, and we talked about what all of the other character’s journeys would be.

What would you say to tease the Oliver-Felicity relationship in the premiere episode?

GUGGENHEIM: I like to say that it’s an explosive first date. It’s so hard to tease it without spoiling it, but I’m very happy with the circumstances under which they have their first kiss. I hope it’s unexpected. I hope it plays as unexpected. I hope it plays as emotional. I guess you’ll have to tell me.

In the grounded world of Arrow, will we ever see Ray Palmer shrink himself and wear a costume?

GUGGENHEIM: I think anything is possible. My instinct is that, if Ray Palmer is going to shrink, he’ll probably shrink on another show. With The Flash in existence, there’s no real compelling reason for us to do superpowers on Arrow. We can bring characters to The Flash, to have superpowers. We have plans for Ray that don’t involve shrinking, but our plans for Ray are actually really cool.

What does Brandon Routh bring to the show?

GUGGENHEIM: There are several things we wanted to do. We started off with this notion that a lot of third season dramas bring in a new character to shake things up. Greg [Berlanti] did it with Scott Wolf’s character on Everwood. It happens on dramas, with great success. So, we were thinking about who is a kind of character that we haven’t seen on the show, and one thing that we haven’t seen is someone who can play at Felicity’s level, in terms of the banter. We write Felicity as if she came in from a different show, but the problem is that she doesn’t have anyone else to talk to like that. We can’t write banter with Felicity and anyone because banter requires two people. So, lo-and-behold, here’s Ray Palmer. I always joke that we basically came up with Felicity because we need one character on the show that we’re able to write.

Greg, Andrew [Kreisberg] and I all have voices for banter and fun quips, but Oliver is super taciturn and Diggle is a man of few words. No one was talking on the show. Felicity was supposed to be a one-off, but Andrew and I both, independently, had the same instinct to write a character that’s easy for us to write because we were exhausted. I will say that Ray is a joy to write for because his banter with Felicity is a lot of fun. It’s a quality of the show that we’ve never seen before. Also, he’s going to end up as the new head of Queen Consolidated, and we know from past seasons that people in charge of Queen Consolidated aren’t always the best people. So, Ray is either an interesting departure or an interesting twist.

What Ray is planning and up to with his whole Star City campaign, and what he plans to do with the company, will be one of those mysteries. One of the things we wanted to do was reintroduce the concept of mystery to the show. We had that in Season 1, with the glyph and the Undertaking, and the list and the notebook. The nature of Season 2 moved us away from that because we had Slade Wilson and it was a much more upfront story of vengeance. With Season 3, we wanted to reintroduce some of those elements of mystery that make you go, “What’s going on there? What’s up?” Hopefully, Ray is one of those characters that will do that for us.

Will family also play a part in the exploration of the theme of identity, this season?

GUGGENHEIM: I think family has always been a key component of the genetics of the show. This has always been a family melodrama, with the Lances, with the Queens, with the adopted family of Team Arrow. So, I wouldn’t say it’s any more or any less than any other season, but it’s definitely a huge component of the show itself, as a whole.

Is Roy Harper okay with taking orders from Oliver, and being a part of Team Arrow?

GUGGENHEIM: I think he’s fine being a part of the team, as he is. We played with that notion of Roy questioning Oliver’s judgement in Episode 218. What you see in Season 3 is a much more mentor/mentee, master/apprentice relationship, which is what we were setting up in 212, but didn’t fully realize. It’s really more fully realized in Season 3. You really see how Oliver is training this kid to be a hero in his own right.

When will we learn about where Thea has been and what she’ll be up to, this season?

GUGGENHEIM: A lesson we learned over Season 2 was that we don’t have to pack everyone into a given episode. As we were breaking this episode out, we discovered that it could be more interesting if Thea, who left town at the end of Season 2, wasn’t around, and it’s part of the mystery. Where is she? She’s not in Starling City. That questions will get answered in Episode 2. You’ll find out where Thea went, at the end of Season 2, and you’ll also find out what exactly was said in that limousine, after that scene ended. The beginning of Episode 3 picks up with Malcolm and Thea in that limo, and you’ll hear the conversation that you didn’t get to hear at the end of Season 2.

Will we see any more of the H.I.V.E. storyline, at all?

GUGGENHEIM: There are no plans, at the moment. I know the fans have been waiting for it, ever since we teased it at the end of 206. It keeps coming up in the writers’ room. Like everything else, it will have its day and its time. At the moment, I can’t say that we’ve got the episode where we pick that thread back up, but it’s definitely on our list of things that we want to get to.

What can you say about the cross-over with Arrow and The Flash?

GUGGENHEIM: It’s so freakin’ awesome! It really is. I’ve never had so much fun writing a script before, maybe in my life. It was such a blast to work on. We’re filming the Arrow episode right now, and it’s just so much fun. I keep telling everyone that we should try for Avengers. It’s these two heroes together with a big production value. We’re blowing out the doors on this. There’s the opportunity for inside jokes, and seeing all of the characters together. What happens when Cisco gets his eyes on Thea? There are moments like that, that you just can’t do in a normal episode. It’s just so much fun. It’s really going to be a blast. Jesse Warren is directing it, and he is just crushing it. Those dailies are really, really insane. Nick Tarabay plays Boomerang/Digger Harkness, and he’s amazing. And that weapon is a whole new visual language in the show, and a whole new visual language for our stunt guys to work with. And watching Grant [Gustin] and Stephen [Amell] together is just magic.

What is it about you guys hiring so many Spartacus actors?

GUGGENHEIM: I don’t know! I really don’t know! We’re always budget-strapped on this show, and I always joke that we could save money by firing our casting director and just casting out of Spartacus, but I’m not going to do that. It’s really a coincidence. They just had great actors on the show, and they work really well in our world. Nick Tarabay was someone who came in for a couple of different roles this season. He made a really, really strong impression on me. I’m just glad we finally found the right role for him on the show. He’s really terrific, as I knew he would be. He’d come in on other things and I’d seen so much of his acting that we just offered him this role, sight unseen. He didn’t have to audition for it. We knew he’d be perfect, and he’s great.

Now that Oliver Queen doesn’t have a fortune or really much of a family, what is his non-Arrow persona, at this point?

GUGGENHEIM: That’s honestly a big question of the season. It speaks to this issue of identity. That’s the challenge and the struggle that he’ll be dealing with, over the entire season. In Episode 3, we’ll demonstrate how important Thea is to him. Basically, Thea is the one last tie he has to his persona as Oliver. That’s his season-long journey. Is there an Oliver Queen anymore? Can there be? And if there can be, what does that look like? It’s a real conundrum for him.

Team Arrow hasn't failed Starling City, but things are about to change.

When the action picks up again on Arrow, Oliver's crew has become a well-oiled machine. There's Felicity, supplementing her nonexistent Team Arrow income with a gig at a Buy More-esque electronics store. There's Diggle, preparing for the arrival of his new baby with Lyla. And then there's Roy, debuting his Arsenal suit as the Arrow's rightful partner. With crime in Starling City steadily decreasing thanks to Team Arrow's heroics (the Anti-Vigilante Task Force is even disbanded) and Slade Wilson's lock-up, are they finally catching a break? And will Oliver and Felicity's much-teased about date and kiss go over well?

“This episode is a really good jumping-on point for new viewers. We closed a chapter at the end of season two and this is a brand-new opening," said executive producer Marc Guggenheim of the Oct. 8 premiere, telling THR in July that season three's main theme is identity. "It’s pretty new viewer-friendly. That wasn’t necessarily by design, it just happened to work out because of the story we were telling.”

That story begins with the return of a familiar villain, Count Vertigo (last played by Seth Gabel and this time portrayed by Peter Stormare), who injects his victims with the powerful Vertigo drug that brings out their greatest fears. Oliver will be forced to face his own crutch in a tense showdown with the Count: himself. Can he be both the Arrow and Oliver Queen? From the looks of it, not likely.

"One of the things we wanted to do was reintroduce the concept of mystery to the show. We had that in season one with the glyph and the Undertaking and the list. The nature of season two moved us away from that because we had Slade Wilson and it was a much more up front story of vengeance," Guggenheim said. "With season three, we wanted to reintroduce some of those elements of mystery that make you go, 'What's going on there?' "

The Hollywood Reporter shares 10 things to know from the upcoming third season, with teases from Guggenheim.

What about that Oliver and Felicity kiss?

While early trailers featured Oliver and Felicity in a corridor (hint: they're in a hospital) near-kiss, the two do lock lips in the premiere. But what leads up to that kiss is drama-filled. Guggenheim called their first date at an Italian restaurant "explosive" — and it literally is. As for the context of Oliver and Felicity's first kiss, which comes after an intense exchange between the two, Guggenheim had this to say, "I'm very happy with the circumstances under which they have their first kiss. I hope it's unexpected. I hope it plays as unexpected. I hope it plays as emotional."

How does Ray Palmer's entrance affect Oliver's professional life?

Oliver will have a formidable foe when it comes to Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), who first encounters Felicity at her day job and later becomes a serious bidder/eventual new owner of Queen Consolidated, which was revealed in the July casting. Ray's presence lightens up the show considerably, and his intentions/end goal with Queen Consolidated, as well as Felicity (porcupine farts are involved), are unclear. "We know from past seasons that people in charge of Queen Consolidated aren't always the best people," Guggenheim hinted. "What Ray is planning and up to with his Star City campaign, and what he plans to do with the company will be one of those mysteries."

What was the main reasoning for bringing in Ray Palmer?

Simple: The writers wanted to bring in a character Arrow hadn't seen yet and was closer to the writers' voices than say, a "taciturn" Oliver or the "man of few words" Diggle. "One thing we haven't seen is someone who can play at Felicity's level in terms of banter. We would always say we write her as if she came in from a different show, but the problem is, she doesn't have anyone else to talk like that [with]," Guggenheim said. "You can't write West Wing-y banter with Felicity because banter requires two people." That's where Ray Palmer comes in. "Ray is a joy to write for because his banter with Felicity is a lot of fun. It's a quality of the show we've never seen before," he added. "Ray's either an interesting departure or an interesting twist."

Will Ray Palmer be seen as the Atom?

Not so fast. When asked about the likelihood of Ray turning into his superhero alter ego, the Atom, Guggenheim seemed to shoot down that idea — at least in regards to Arrow. "Anything is possible. My instinct is if Ray Palmer is going to shrink, he'll probably shrink on another show [The Flash]," he said. "With The Flash in existence, there's no real compelling reason to do superpowers on Arrow because we can bring characters to Flash to have superpowers." Guggenheim teased that they "have plans for Ray that don't involve shrinking" and called them "cool."

Are Oliver and Laurel in the best place they've ever been?

Now that Laurel knows of Oliver's masked identity, the two have become a force to be reckoned with at the start of the season: the Arrow catches the bad guys, Laurel indicts them. Guggenheim referenced a moment in episode six where the history and backstory between the two is fully felt. "They were best friends, they were lovers, they were in love with each other and now they’re post-relationship, but there’s this history there that’s always going to follow them and there’s always going to be a bond between the two of them," he explained. "There’s a scene in episode six where there’s a really good example of that."

Is Roy and Oliver's team-up a preview of things to come?

For Guggenheim, integrating Roy into the Team Arrow fold as an integral member of the crew was an arc that first began back in season two's "Tremors" episode. "We made a big deal about Roy joining the team [back then] and then didn't get a chance to do that much with it because we were pushing a lot of other story," he admitted, promising that Oliver and Roy's "mentor-mentee, master-apprentice relationship" is "a big component of the [new] season." "You really feel like Roy is a part of Team Arrow and it's more than just wearing a costume. He's really present and a member of the group — the trio becomes a quartet." A Roy-centric hour comes in episode six and Guggenheim hinted that it will have similarities to "Tremors." "I wouldn't call it a sequel but they are thematically related," he said. "Roy being a part of the team is an important part of Roy's development."

How does Ra's al Ghul play into things?

Well-known DC villain Ra's al Ghul (Aussie actor Matt Nable) becomes a looming presence starting in at least episode four, though Guggenheim remained mum on just how impactful his impending arrival would be. With Ra's' return comes the re-appearance of his daughter Nyssa (Katrina Law), who Guggenheim confirmed does appear in the fourth episode.

Will Captain Lance's health become a liability and does he adapt to not being in the field?

Newly promoted to Starling City PD's captain, which takes him out of the field — a fact Laurel is happy about but he's not OK with — Quentin Lance disbands the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, publicly acknowledging the vigilante's accomplishments in keeping the city's crime rate low. But issues with his health (mainly his heart), a result of being shot in the season-two finale, continue to be a big problem, causing him to take pills on a regular basis. "It's really our outward manifestation of the fact that he's got a medical issue that's plaguing him for the course of the season," Guggenheim said, adding that Lance will struggle with "his new responsibilities" as captain, which will actively place him "at the center of city-wide crises in a way that's never happened before." Case in point: Episode five will see Lance interacting heavily with the new Starling City mayor. "He's moving up the chain and it'll require him to rely on some different judgmental skills, and maybe some political skills as well."

What has Thea been up to?

The younger Queen isn't seen in the premiere, but Guggenheim hinted that episode two will provide a lot of answers. "As we were breaking this episode out, we discovered, 'It could be more interesting if Thea, who left town at the end of season two, wasn't around.' And it's part of the mystery," he said. "Where is she? She's not in Starling City. ... You'll find out where Thea went." And just what was said in the limo between Thea and Malcolm? That will also be answered sooner rather than later. "The beginning of episode three is [where] we pick up with Malcolm and Thea in that limo and we hear that conversation that you didn't get to hear at the end of season two," Guggenheim teased.

How big will The Flash and Arrow crossover be?

From the sound of it, pretty big. Currently in production on the Arrow side of the two-hour event, which will be each show's respective eighth episodes (Spartacus' Nick Tarabay plays the villain Boomerang), Guggenheim geeked out when talking about it: "It's so freaking awesome!" "I've never had so much fun writing a script before maybe in my life. It was such a blast to work on," he said enthusiastically. "I kept telling everyone, 'We should try for Avengers.' These two heroes together, big production value, we're blowing out the doors on this ... Watching Grant [Gustin] and Stephen [Amell] together is just magic." By having Arrow on The Flash and vice versa introduces the possibility of having characters interacting who would never have been able to, and allows the chance for "inside jokes." "What happens when Cisco gets his eye on Thea? Moments you can't do in a normal episode," Guggenheim said.

Everything's changing on Arrow this year. Team Arrow has gained a few more members and allies, but Oliver (Stephen Amell) has also lost all his family (and his fortune). But with nothing left to lose, Oliver will finally make a play for Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) heart. However, the mysterious new head of Queen Consolidated Ray Palmer (which just so happens to be the real-world alias of the superhero The Atom) isn't going to make things easy for him.

Check out everything executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed about Oliver and Felicity's relationship, what Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) really wants and whether we'll see Laurel (Katie Cassidy) become the Black Canary anytime soon.

Now that he's lost his company and his family, what's become of Oliver's non-Arrow persona?
Marc Guggenheim: That's really the thing that Oliver is struggling with at the start of the third season. He's lost his mother. Thea's (Willa Holland) left town. He's lost his home. He's lost his company. I think Oliver is sort of questioning, "What is life like for Oliver Queen? Is there even an Oliver Queen?" That's the thing that he's wrestling with and he's trying to locate that part of his identity in his relationship with Felicity.

What can you say about Oliver and Felicity's first date?
Guggenheim: They go for Italian. I believe he orders a scotch. Felicity wears a very beautiful dress. What else can I reveal? Oliver's going to tell Felicity something he's never told her before.

They also have their first kiss!
Guggenheim: I think people will be surprised by the circumstances under which they have their first kiss because that's basically how we do things onArrow. But I think the circumstances make the kiss so much more emotional than it otherwise would be.

Now that Oliver is pursuing a relationship with Felicity, are things really over between him and Laurel?
Guggenheim: I think ever since the beginning of Season 2 when Oliver and Laurel had their conversation about Tommy's death and Oliver being away for those five months after Tommy's death. I think Oliver and Laurel are sort of in a really good post-relationship place. That's not to say they'll never get back together again. We never say never on Arrow. But I think Season 3 shows that their relationship sort of evolves. I think some of the scenes we've had in Season 3 between Stephen and Katie Cassidy are actually among the closest Oliver and Laurel have had since Season 1.

How does the fact that she knows his secret change things?
Guggenheim: That's really the fun thing for us. We now get to have scenes between Oliver and Laurel that we never got to have on the show now that she's in the circle of trust. And I think what it's done is it's really deepened their relationship because now they can really be truthful with each other about what's going on in their lives. That said, Laurel is going to keep a secret from Oliver because that's our show. Our characters keep secrets from each other.

Will we see Laurel take more steps to becoming the Black Canary?
Guggenheim: I certainly don't want to spoil anything, but suffice it to say we definitely intended Laurel to be set on a path when Sara gave her that jacket. And you have not seen the last of that jacket. This so borders on spoiler, but I think people who love Laurel's character and love the idea of her being more active in fighting crime than just being a district attorney will be really happy this year.

How is the team dynamic affected now that Roy's (Colton Haynes) a part of it?
Guggenheim: He's finding his place in this dynamic. He came into a trio and now it's a quartet. He's sort of learning how to deal with that. At the same time he's going to be dealing with some pretty heavy baggage over the course of the first bunch of episodes. There's some things that happen in the premiere that are going to resonate and stick with him for the first half of the year. And there are some chickens from last season that are also going to come home to roost for Roy. Roy's got some pretty big issues to deal with this season that are related to, but also go far beyond, his relationship to Team Arrow.

How are Roy and Oliver handling Thea's disappearance?
Guggenheim: That's something that's actually going to come to a head in the first two episodes. Suffice it to say they're both dealing with it differently. And I would suggest that's because one has more information regarding Thea's whereabouts than the other.

When will we learn what Thea's been up to?
Guggenheim: Well, in the third episode you will find out very specifically what happened once Thea got into that car because we're going to pick that scene up were we left off and see what exactly Thea said to Malcolm and what Malcolm said to her.

Are we going to see a drastically different side of Thea this season?
Guggenheim: I would say that her new associations and her new relationship with Malcom are going to change her quite significantly. I don't want to say how.

Roy is pretty headstrong. How does he take to being Oliver's sidekick?
Guggenheim: I think at the beginning of the season it's actually going pretty well. They definitely develop a mentor-apprentice type relationship and that's not not say that Roy doesn't have a lot of baggage to deal with, but things are going to happen and things are going to come to light in Episode 6 that are really going to challenge his relationship with Oliver. And Oliver's relationship with him. Its going to be a two-way street.

Diggle (David Ramsey) just found out he's going to be a dad. How will being a parent change his role on the team?
Guggenheim: This year's all about identity for all of our characters. And Diggle will definitely be struggling with, "How do I be a member of Team Arrow and be a father at the same time?" And the way he resolves that dilemma may really surprise you.

What can you say about Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and his motivations?
Guggenheim: Ray comes in and his agenda is something of a mystery. When we first met with Brandon we explained that Ray Palmer is the kind of guy who has multiple sides to him and multiple layers and what you see is not always what you're going to get. And he's definitely going to have an association with Felicity, which should be very interesting not just for Felicity but for Oliver. He'll have plans for Starling City. He definitely comes into the show with very interesting plans for Starling City. And some of those plans he's very upfront with and others are a closely guarded secret.

Is there anything more you can say about Ray's relationship with Felicity?
Guggenheim: It's impossible not to have chemistry with Emily Bett Rickards. It's funny, people on the Internet have been shouting down just the idea of Felicity having chemistry or an attraction to anyone but Oliver. But it's pretty undeniable when you see Emily and Brandon on screen together.

The flashbacks are now going to be taking place in Hong Kong. What will they teach us about Oliver?
Guggenheim: One of the things that we've only done occasionally with the flashbacks is learn how Oliver got a significant part of his arsenal or learned a specific type of skill. And one thing we'll be seeing is how Oliver learned how to interrogate people. And by interrogate people, I mean torture.
