Thea (Willa Holland) may have gotten a new lease on life in Wednesday's Arrow, but don't expect the dead characters of the CW drama to be joining her.

Oliver (Stephen Amell) made the agonizing choice to join the League of Assassins in exchange for access to the Lazarus Pit and its restorative powers to save his sister, who was close to death after being attacked. The decision was all the more painful because Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) finally confessed her love for him — going as far as drugging Oliver in a failed attempt to bring him back to Starling City from Nanda Parbat.

Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim knows fans will likely clamor for dead characters such as Oliver's best friend Tommy (Colin Donnell) and mother Moira (Susanna Thompson) to be revived with the Lazarus Pit, which in comic book lore can raise the dead. Despite the lengthy roster of deceased characters on the show, Guggenheim says the producers don't have plans to use the Lazarus Pit in that way.

He notably doesn't mention Caity Lotz's Sara as being on the "no Lazarus Pit list." Lotz is slated to appear in the untitled Arrow/Flash spinoff, though her character Sara died earlier this season.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Guggenheim also weighs in on Oliver's potentially dark future, the complications Thea faces after her dip in the pit, and Roy's (Colton Haynes) goodbye.

Is the Lazarus Pit on the table for other people?

Now that we've got it in our world, and we have a lot of dead characters in our world, we will be addressing how it works and the circumstances and things of that nature. I know that is something our fans are going to be very interested in. I'm sure after the events of episode 20, there will be a lot of, "Get Tommy in the pit. Get Moira in the pit." We don't have any plans to do that, but we have an explanation for why that is the case.

Thea seems OK, but is it safe to assume there will be complications from her dip in the pit?

Everything in the show has consequences, and that's something we've been consistent about. It's something you will continue to see not just through the end of season three but into season four.

We got a sense of Ra's backstory, with him being torn away from them by the previous Ra's. Where did that come from?

One thing we try to do on the show is give our villains a relatable backstory. Very few of our villains come into the world completely evil. They sort of become evil over time. We were just consistent with that philosophy when it came to Ra's. It would be very convenient if he was born evil and then joined an evil organization.

Ra's used to be a loving family man, but is now a brutal killer. Is Oliver in danger of going over the edge like that?

That's very much the concern. In many ways, 320 is a cliffhanger, because it ends with Oliver joining this organization, with us knowing that this is an evil organization. The League of Assassins is not the name of a nice group. Now that he is a member, who knows what he is going to have to do in the course of his ascension to Ra's. It's a true cliffhanger. You don't know where the show is going to go after, after the events of episode 320.

Is Felicity and Ray's breakup part of Brandon Routh transitioning to the spinoff?

Ray is going to remain a big part of Arrow throughout the remainder of the season. We didn't break up Felicity and Ray because of the spinoff. We really had to do it to make it for Oliver and Felicity to sleep together, because we didn't want Felicity cheating on Ray the first time she hooked up with Oliver. That would not be cool.

After his exit last week, Colton Haynes comes back as Roy one more time this season. What are some of the circumstances of that?

The one loop we haven't tied off is the relationship between Roy and Thea. That storyline in episode 22 is really designed to put a punctuation mark on their love affair.

How much Roy will we see in season four?

It's totally based on Colton's availability and what stories we have. We haven't slotted particular episodes yet. We're just at the early stages of planning out the overall storylines for season four. We haven't gotten down to the point where we'd say it's going to be episodes X,Y, and Z. it will be a situation where we have an idea, and then we'll go to Colton, and then find out what his storyline will be.

What happens in Nanda Parbat stays in Nanda Parbat — or does it?

On Wednesday’s Arrow, Oliver and Felicity consummated their relationship, but the brief moment of romance was cut short as they said their goodbyes.

In exchange for using the Lazarus Pits to save Thea’s life, Oliver assumed his position as the Heir to the Demon — despite Felicity’s hilarious attempt to drug and sneak him out of Nanda Parbat. Although they eventually bid farewell to each other, the pair won’t be separated for long — but it won’t be an entirely happy reunion.

Below, executive producer Marc Guggenheim previews the heartbreaking aftermath of Oliver’s decision, the future of “Olicity,” the side effects still awaiting Thea and more.

TEAM ARROW SANS ARROW | With Oliver choosing to stay behind in Nanda Parbat, “the character journey of [Episode] 321 is how the hell Team Arrow moves forward without Oliver,” Guggenheim previews. Whereas last time the group thought he was dead, “knowing that he’s out there and alive, but a member of the League of Assassins, that’s a whole lot harder” for Team Arrow to handle, the EP adds.

“There is a real trinity formed between Laurel, Diggle and Felicity,” Guggenheim says. “They’re all leaning on each other. They’re processing things in different ways. Laurel is throwing herself into her work saving the city. Felicity is struggling with heartbreak and grief. She really goes through the seven stages of grief with Oliver. And Diggle, something happens in [Episode] 21 that really upends Diggle’s world, certainly vis-à-vis Oliver. That’s something that will have repercussions for the remainder of the season.”

The EP adds that next week’s hour is “one of our most emotional episodes” because it’s a baddie-of-the-week installment in which “the villain of the week is Oliver.”

So with the hero giving in to the darker nature of the League, what does his future hold?

“The last three episodes spend a lot of time addressing the question of: ‘Is there hope for Oliver?'” the EP says. “And: ‘Is there hope for Oliver in Felicity’s mind?’ [Episodes] 21 and 22 have some very specific things to say about that and Felicity’s coming to grips with the conclusion of Episode 20.”

BETWEEN THE SHEETS | It finally happened: Oliver and Felicity succumbed to their feelings. Guggenheim says, while the episode was coming together in the writers’ room, “there was a strong desire to have Oliver and Felicity sleep together before the events of the season finale, which isn’t to say that we were going to have them sleep together in the season finale.” He adds:”We wanted to take that off the table prior to the season finale. We knew Episode 320 was the episode to do it in. We went back and forth in the writers’ room about the right venue for it. Like does it happen in Starling City? Does it happen in Nanda Parbat? And as you can see, they end up sleeping together in Nanda Parbat. We liked the romance of that.”

And surprisingly, the man earning the biggest portion of Felicity’s ire was the one who helped make the magic moment happen. “I’m, personally, fond of the fact that it’s Ra’s who gives her the final push” to confess her feelings, the EP continues. “One of the things that I keep seeing on the Internet is [that] Felicity has never told Oliver that she loves him, and that was very deliberate. We were holding that back this season. The same way we were holding back them sleeping together, we were also holding back her saying, ‘I love you,’ to him. We wanted it to be part and parcel of that moment.”

A QUEEN REBORN | Although Thea regained her memory — and sass! — by episode’s end, her dip in the magical waters doesn’t mean she’s necessarily out of the woods. “You can expect that there will be more consequences,” Guggenheim teases. “We established very clearly that the Lazarus Pit returns you, but not always in the condition in which you left. So there’s a lot of stories to be told with Thea and her recovery.” And with Malcolm vowing to stay by her side, there’s “a nice bit of closure” between father and daughter “by the end of the season.”

THE HEIR THAT WAS | Fans of Nyssa won’t want to miss next Wednesday’s episode. “We’ll learn how she reacts to things and how she’s dealing with life post-[Episode] 316,” Guggenheim reveals, “and how Oliver’s joining the League affects her, both emotionally and as a practical matter. There’s a lot of Nyssa still to come, and she looms very large in these final three episodes.”

So that happened. Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) agreed to be the heir to the Demon Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) and to join the League of Assassins — and he and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) got to finally have a night in bed together, and a cozy “morning after” — albeit to the point Felicity drugged him and tried kidnapping him from the League. Can’t blame a girl for trying! So it was a bittersweet episode as the long-awaited events of Felicity and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) breaking up and Felicity finally declaring her love for Oliver against the backdrop of Thea’s (Willa Holland) resurrection from the Lazarus Pit and Oliver surrounding to the League to become a Dark Archer. It was painful knowing that Felicity, Diggle (David Ramsey), Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and Thea were all safely leaving Nanda Parbat, while Oliver remained behind. But Oliver got what he wanted: he save Thea and he got one blissful night with Felicity. It may just be enough to sustain him as he becomes a Dark Archer, owing his life and soul to the League of Assassins and now destined to be the next Ra’s al Ghul.

In order to get some answers about what’s next, at a recent press screening, executive producer Marc Guggenheim talked about how Team Arrow will go on without Oliver Queen, the after-effects on Thea, if there is hope of Oliver ever getting out of the League, and how will Nyssa (Katrina Law) react to this devastating blow on her legacy.

LAZARUS PIT EFFECTS ON THEA

MARC: That’s something we have been talking about a lot. You can expect that there will be more consequences. We have established very clearly that the Lazarus Pit returns you, but not always in the condition that you left. There’s a lot of stories still to be told with Thea and her recovery.

TEAM ARROW WITHOUT OLIVER

MARC: The character journey of Episode 321 is how the hell Team Arrow moves forward without Oliver. It’s a different circumstance in Episode 321 than it was in Episode 310, where they thought he was dead and in some ways that was a whole lot easier. But now knowing he’s out there and alive but a member of the League of Assassins, that is a whole lot harder. Episode 321 is one of our most emotional episodes — it is a villain of the week episode and it just so happens that the villain is Oliver. . . The tricky thing about Episode 321 is making it different from Episodes 310, 311, and 312 when Oliver was missing and presumed dead, and one of the things we talked about is: how is Team Arrow functioning post-Oliver? We didn’t want to get too much into crime-on-the-rise, we felt we did that with Brick. But certainly you will see in Episodes 321 and 322 what Team Arrow is up to and how they are working to continue to protect the city while Oliver is away. . . What happens in the wake of Episode 320 is there is a real trinity formed between Laurel, Diggle and Felicity, and they are all sort of leaning on each other. They are all processing things in different ways. Laurel is throwing herself into her work saving the city. Felicity is struggling with heart-break and grief. She really goes through the Seven Stages of Grief with Oliver. Diggle, something happens in Episode 321 that really up-ends Diggle’s world, certainly vis-a-vis Oliver and that is something that will actually have repercussions for the remainder of the season.

LILA’S NEXT APPEARANCE

MARC: You will see Lila one more time this season. You’ll see her again in the next episode. She’s happy being a wife and mother. She is chillin’ out. Her biggest responsibility right now is being supportive of Diggle, who will be going through some really difficult times. She’s just being there for him.

OLIVER & FELICITY

MARC: One thing the was really important was there was a strong desire to have Oliver and Felicity sleep together before the events of the season finale — which isn’t to say that we were going to have them sleep together in the season finale — we wanted to sort of take that off the table prior to the season finale. . . We knew that Episode 320 was the episode to do it in — and we ended up choosing that they end up sleeping together in Nanda Parbat — we all sort of liked the romance of that. And I’m personally fond of the fact that it is Ra’s who gives her the final push. . . Certainly, the final three episodes spend a lot of time addressing the question of: is there hope for Oliver? And certainly, is there hope for Oliver and Felicity? Episode 321 and 322 have some very specific things to say about that and Felicity’s coming to grips with the conclusion of Episode 320.

PREGNANCY POSSIBILITY

MARC: Felicity is not pregnant.

FELICITY’S NEWFOUND ASSERTIVENESS

MARC: Felicity has been developing quite a bit of backbone this year. We have certainly developed her as someone who is not afraid to stand up to Oliver and show some backbone. That’s her character journey, in many ways. It’s her developing herself outside of her romantic relationships. It was easy to write that scene with her and Ra’s because you really buy that she has that fortitude. And by the way, we did include her scar from Episode 214.

OLIVER’S ADJUSTMENT

MARC: Episode 321 answers that question pretty definitively.

MASEO’S INTERNAL STRUGGLE

MARC: Maseo’s soul is very much in play and that dynamic plays out in the final 3 episodes of the season. In the past and the present, there is a little bit of a war for Maseo’s soul. We just know from the fact that he joined the League of Assassins, we know how that ended in the past. But how things end in the present, and whether or not he can be redeemed is definitely one of the questions that we’re building up towards.

REACTIONS OF NYSSA AND TATSU

MARC: Episode 321 gives you a lot of Nyssa and we will be seeing Tatsu again in the present day. . . That’s a big, big topic of Episode 321. If you’re a Nyssa fan, Episode 321 is your episode because we will learn a lot of things about Nyssa. Not in terms of backstory, but we’ll learn how she reacts to things and how she is dealing with life post-Episode 316 and how Oliver joining the League affects her, both emotionally and as a practical matter. There is a lot of Nyssa still to come and she looms very large in these final three episodes.

RAY & FELICITY

MARC: They are pretty well and truly kaboshed. I will say they have a very meaningful exchange in Episode 322. But we’re not going to do a on-again, off-again thing with them. Romantically, this is sort of where we leave them. . . It’s funny, I was in the editing room working on Episode 322 and I am watching that scene and I am having to remind myself that they broke up because there is actually — regardless of who you ship and people’s feelings about Ray and Felicity — there is a lot of chemistry between Brandon and Emily, and even when [Ray and Felicity] are broken up, I watch them in that scene in Episode 322 and I feel all the chemistry and I have remind myself that they broke up in Episode 320. It’s just the way those actors are in a scene together.

RAY’S HELPING TEAM ARROW

MARC: Yes, in an organic way. What I means is one thing we avoided doing this year was: Ray is a superhero, therefore Ray is a member of Team Arrow. Every time he interacts with Team Arrow or aligns himself with Team Arrow, there’s a story reason behind it, as opposed to just the assumption that he is part of the team. Ray plays a very large role in all of the events, certainly in Episode 322 and 323. Episode 321, Ray is not in because it is a very Team Arrow-centric episode and Ray, for all of his charms and for all the help he can provide, is not a member of Team Arrow and we wanted to keep the focus on that team.

ARROW CAVE

MARC: It’s kaboshed. . . They are going to end up hanging out a great deal at Palmer Technologies. In fact, we basically had to reconstruct and expand Ray’s workshop to allow for scenes where we now suddenly have a large group of people, rather than just Ray and Felicity. So we did a little bit of set redesign, redecoration. That basically is there for the remainder of the season. In fact, there is a scene in Episode 322 — and you’ll never recognize it as the lair — but there is a scene in Episode 322 and it is basically in the same footprint on the stages where the lair was. That said, you haven’t seen the last of the lair yet. It makes one final appearance in Episode 321.

MALCOLM & THEA

MARC: By the end of the season, there is a nice bit of closure between Malcolm and Thea. That you feel like their story has had a beginning, middle and end. The feelings that Thea has vis-a-vis Malcolm are pretty clearly explicated by the end.

MALCOLM’S REMORSE

MARC: Malcolm is an interesting guy. He is not without a conscience. At the same time, I don’t think his conscience troubles him that much. He’s not a sociopath. He knows that he has done bad stuff, and he knows that bad stuff has had bad consequences. But it doesn’t seem to keep him up at night. With Oliver, and certainly his whole gambit that started in Episode 309 of Oliver to engage with Ra’s, it’s never worked out the way he planned. Malcolm’s perfect world was: “I’m going to have Thea kills Sara, that will bring Ra’s and Oliver into conflict, Oliver will take out Ra’s, everything is going to be great.” Obviously, it didn’t work out that way. The fun thing about Malcol — in addition to his not quite so sociopathic-nature, but he is certainly very forgiving of himself — he’s playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. So he is thinking twenty moves ahead all the time, and a lot of times those twenty moves ahead are self-serving or at the very least, they are in service of his world view. That is a world view that he believes a great deal in. He always thinks he has done the right thing. I think he views the Undertaking more as a failed “good idea” than a just god-awful idea — that is despite the fact that it killed his son. He’s like, “If only it had worked out. It almost worked out. Then everything would have been great.”

SEASON 3 FINALE

MARC: Not that we never do cliffhangers in our season finale, but even if there is a cliffhanger like . . . Episode 323 ends on a cliffhanger depending on your definition of cliffhanger. But not the kind of cliffhanger like: is he going to live or is not going to live? That type of traditional definition of cliffhanger. We like to provide a little bit more closure in our finales.

TWITTER SNEAK-PEEK PHOTO OF NEW SET

MARC: Right now, there are no plans for it to play beyond Episode 323. It requires a fair amount of green-screen work to make work and the scene that we shot on it features Ra’s, Nyssa and Oliver.

DEATHSTROKE

MARC: We have Slade Wilson ideas. Manu [Bennett] is shooting another TV show in New Zealand. So there are some practical things, but he’s not off the table.

COLTON HAYNES’S DEPARTURE

MARC: This is a little different from our ordinary departures, not just in the fact that Colton’s [character] is not dead, but when Colton came on board the show as sort of a recurring in Season 1, it was basically like he had just come off TEEN WOLF and he wasn’t sure he wanted to do another series. It was like, “Come on over to ARROW and play with us for a little bit and if it’s working out for you, then we’ll talk about making you a regular.” And we’ve taken this approach with other actors in the past before, like they are not sure they want to commit to a series or not. Colton did come on board and did have a good time and we made a 2-year deal with him. So this wasn’t a situation like where we had someone in the middle of their contract. It wasn’t like Susanna [Thompson] last year or Colin [Donnell] the year before. This was: we always knew we would have Colton for Years 2 and 3. So we started the year off basically with this endgame in mind. I probably creatively had the conversation with Colton back during January for TCA, where I said, “Okay, this is how we are going to write you out, basically” and sort of pitched him the whole thing. We knew in large portion at the beginning of the year how we were going to pull it off. . . I don’t want to say, “We tried to convince him and he turned us down.” It was very much like: he’s got a big movie coming out, he’s got a huge career ahead of him. For us, it was more of a conversation of: how do we continue to go forward? Like the reason we didn’t kill off Roy is we want Roy Harper and Arsenal to remain in this little universe we are creating. Colton was completely game for that. I cannot make an announcement and promise episode 4, 5 and 6 of Season 4 that he will be on ARROW. The relationship is still there and his desire to continue to play the character is still there, and those are two things you need. . . The thing we felt we owed the audience, more than anything, was some closure with Thea. Because, obviously, the circumstances Thea is in for that episode, she was too busy getting killed by Ra’s to say goodbye to Roy. . . and there was three season long love-story between these two characters.

ROY’S RETURN

MARC: Since wrapping Episode 319, Colton has actually come back to the show twice because there was a scene from Episode 318 that we ended up carrying because we ran out of time on the shooting day. So we had to bring him back to pick up the scene from Episode 318, that you saw last week in Episode 319, as well as for his storyline in Episode 322.

BLACK CANARY IN PROMO

MARC: It’s not in this episode and, honestly, it’s not in any episode. [Per CW: It is in the promo, but it is not in any episodes.]

To find out exactly how dark Oliver Queen in the upcoming episodes and how his former team will react to that, look for the final three episodes of ARROW Season 3 airing Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. on the CW, with the Season 3 finale on May 13th.

Mark Guggenheim habla sobre el cambio en el Estatus Quo de Oliver y más grandes revelaciones
Por Albert Ching, 22 Abril 2015

Teased for weeks, it finally happened on last night's "Arrow." Of course, "it" means a couple of different things.

For one, Oliver Queen/the Arrow (Stephen Amell) accepted Ra's al Ghul's (Matt Nable) offer to join the League of Assassins -- as al Ghul's eventual heir, to one day take over as leader of the League. Also, the long-teased romance -- have you seen Tumblr lately? -- between Oliver and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) paid off in a big way, with the unresolved sexual tension suddenly becoming very, um, resolved; fresh from Felicity breaking up with Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh). Also, the Lazarus Pit -- unlike "The Dark Knight" trilogy version, which is depicted as an actual magical, life-reviving force a la the comic books -- was seen in action, specifically used to restore Thea (Willa Holland) back to relative normality, with only some dramatic confusion and mild memory loss, though more side effects are likely yet to come.

With the third season of the DC Comics-based CW hit nearing its finale, "Arrow" Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim joined a group of assembled entertainment press, including CBR News, to discuss the major events of the episode -- addressing the timing and venue of the hookup long-awaited by "Olicity" fans, what happens to Team Arrow if Oliver is leading the League of Assassins, how Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) fits into all of this, what the future holds for the Atom and going all the way with a comic book-accurate depiction of Ra's.

Will there be more consequences from Thea's Lazarus Pit-induced revival?

Marc Guggenheim: That's something we've been talking about a lot in the writers' room. You can expect that there will be more consequences. We've sort of established, very clearly, that the Lazarus Pit returns you, but not always in the condition in which you left. There's a lot of stories still to be told with Thea and her recovery.

On the decision to present a more comic book-authentic depiction of Ra's al Ghul, complete with a life-reviving Lazarus Pit:

We never thought that we couldn't go all the way, so it was just a question of, "What version of Ra's do we want to put on the show?" The one thing we were dead set against in the beginning was making it too similar to the Ra's in the "Dark Knight" movies. We're all comic book fans, and we certainly recognize the story potential of the Lazarus Pit. We didn't really have any long, protracted discussions of, "Is this where we want to go or is this not where we want to go?" We had a hunger for it.

On the timing of Oliver and Felicity sleeping together for the first time:

In the writers' room, there was a strong desire to have Oliver and Felicity sleep together before the events of the season finale. We wanted to almost take that off the table prior to the season finale. We went back and forth in the writers' room -- we knew that episode 20 was the right episode to do it in. We went back and forth in the writers' room on the right venue for it. Does it happen in Starling City? Does it happen in Nanda Parbat? As you can see, they end up sleeping together in Nanda Parbat. I think we all liked the romance of that.

I'm personally found of the fact that it's Ra's who gives her the final push. One of the things that I keep seeing on the Internet is, "Well, Felicity's never told Oliver that she loves him." That was very deliberate. We were holding that back, in the same way we were holding back them sleeping together. We wanted it to be part and parcel with that moment.

Will Oliver struggle morally with his decision to join the League of Assassins?

[Episode 21] answers that question pretty definitively. Even the opening moments of 21, quite frankly.

Are Ray and Felicity done for good?

They're pretty well and truly kiboshed. They do have a very meaningful exchange in episode 22, but we're not going to do an off-again, on-again, off-again thing with them. Romantically, this is where we leave them. But their scene in 22 -- in fact, I was in the editing room today on 22, and I'm watching that scene, and I had to remind myself that they broke up. Regardless of who you "ship," and people's feelings about Ray and Felicity, there's a lot of chemistry between Brandon and Emily. Even when they're broken up, I watch them on screen in that scene in 22, and I feel all the chemistry, and I have to remind myself, "No, they broke up in 20!"

Will The Atom take a more active role in Team Arrow following Oliver and Roy's departures?

Yes, in an organic way. One thing we've avoided doing this year is, "Ray's a superhero, therefore Ray is a member of Team Arrow." Every time he interacts with Team Arrow or allies himself with Team Arrow, there's a story reason behind it, as opposed to just the assumption, "OK, he's part of the team."

Ray plays a very large role in 22 and 23. 21, Ray's not in, because it's a very Team Arrow-centric episode.

Where will Team Arrow base operations now, post-Arrowcave?

They're going to end up hanging out a great deal at Palmer Technologies. We had to expand Ray's workshop to allow for scenes with a large group of people. That basically is the lair for the remainder for the season. That said, you haven't seen the last of the lair yet. It makes one final appearance in 21.

With Oliver gone, is Thea going to lean on Malcolm in any real way?

By the end of the season, I feel there's a nice bit of closure between Malcolm and Thea. You feel like their story has had a beginning, middle and end. The feelings that Thea has, vis-a-vis Malcolm, I think are pretty clearly explicated by the end.

What happens to the team's dynamics in Oliver's absence?

In the wake of episode 20, there's a real trinity formed between Laurel, Diggle and Felicity. They're all sort of leaning on each other. They're processing things in different ways. I think Laurel is throwing herself into her work saving the city, I think Felicity is struggling with heartbreak and grief. She really goes through the seven stages of grief with Oliver. Diggle -- something happens in 21 that really upends Diggle's world, certainly vis-a-vis Oliver. That's something that will have repercussions for the remainder of the season.

When will viewers see Nyssa's reaction to Oliver deciding to join the League?

That's a big, big topic of 21. If you're a Nyssa fan, 21's your episode. We'll learn a lot of things about Nyssa. We'll learn how she reacts to things, and how she's dealing with life, and how Oliver joining the league affects her, both emotionally and as a practical matter. There's a lot of Nyssa still to come. She looms very large in these final three episodes.

The actress on what Nyssa thinks of Oliver, the danger she's in and what it would be like if Nyssa met The Flash.

The Daughter of the Demon has been in flux lately on Arrow, as things have changed drastically for Nyssa al Ghul, played by Katrina Law. The heir apparent to her father’s legacy, Nyssa found herself passed over by Ra’s al Ghul when he named Oliver Queen as the person who would take his place. In the wake of this, Nyssa has been spending more time than ever in Starling City and found a new focus by continuing the training of Laurel Lance, now that she’s become Black Canary.

This week’s Arrow, "Al Sah-him", puts Nyssa in the spotlight, though in a dangerous way. With Oliver now having accepted Ra’s al Ghul’s offer, the League of Assassins returns to Starling City - and Nyssa is the one they’re after.

I spoke to Law about what to expect this week, Nyssa’s dynamic with Laurel, her thoughts on Oliver Queen and more, including what it might be like seeing Nyssa meet Barry Allen on The Flash.

IGN: We know that this week’s episode find The League back in Starling and targeting Nyssa. Do they intend to bring her back to Nanda Parbat or could things be more dire?

Law: Things could be more dire. Basically, now that Oliver has accepted the role of Al Sah-him and become the new Ra’s al Ghul, you have to take out all of your potential contenders and Nyssa is definitely a potential contender. So I think this is life or death for Nyssa.

IGN: And how is she reacting to all of this? She’s already basically lost what had been her identity. Now seeing these former allies of hers coming for her, does that change things even more?

Law: Nyssa is an interesting character, especially in how she reacts to losing her title. You would think that she would rebel a little bit more but I think she has so much respect for the League and the ways of the culture and everything she’s been brought up with that she accepts it. She isn’t happy with it but she does accept tradition. She does accept the prophecy and she has, as gracefully as she can, bowed down to the needs of the League. Now that the League is after her, I think she fully accepts that as well. Nyssa, being the type of person that she is, she will not do what Malcolm Merlyn did, which is hide. She will face the League with dignity and as much honor as she possibly can.

IGN: She and Oliver have had plenty of fights, but they also have worked together at times. What does she think of him now and how clouded or not clouded is it by the role her father chose for him?

Law: I think she is extremely bitter toward Oliver, through no fault of his own at this point. I think she has dealt with her issues regarding Oliver and Sara and him becoming a fighter in general. She has given him respect but when it comes to becoming the new Ra’s al Ghul, it’s a bitter pill for her to swallow. She’s coming to terms with it but she also knows that if he is part of the prophecy that her father believes in and that the League is ultimately going to accept, that she needs to accept as well.

IGN: We’ve actually only seen her interact with Ra’s al Ghul directly a handful of times. Might there be another father daughter-confrontation on the way?

Law: Oh my gosh. There may or may not be a massive-father daughter confrontation coming up soon.

IGN: Talk about her in this new dynamic with Laurel, because it’s a very different role to see her in, mentoring and sort of trying to be this positive force for her. Has that helped give her a different focus in the wake of everything that’s happened?

Law: I think Laurel has been essential in Nyssa’s survival at this point. She has given her a focus and she’s given her a reason to exist, essentially. Nyssa’s world is very black and white. You are either dead or alive and you are either right or wrong. In the League there are no grey points. The great thing about the Laurel character is that she’s introduced Nyssa to a different world, one that she’s never experienced before, one where she’s allowed to smile, one where she’s allowed to be happy, one where grey does exist and is completely acceptable. So I think, in every sense of the word, in the situation, Laurel is just expanding Nyssa’s mind. I think Nyssa is starting to figure out who she is, outside of the League of Assassins. I think it’s a little daunting and scary at times but at the same time, I think she’s really excited, at the same time, at the prospect of who she could become.

IGN: I’ve seen more than a few fans ask if anything romantic could happen between Laurel and Nyssa or if it’s strictly a friendship/mentorship situation.

Law: I’m sure Nyssa would be all about it. I don’t know that Laurel would be all about it. But you don’t know until you try!

IGN: The network episode description mentions how Laurel asks Felicity and Diggle to help Nyssa. Safe to say that help is something that Nyssa is a little reluctant to accept, given her nature?

Law: I think Nyssa’s reluctance to accept their help is because she knows that the League of Assassins is after her and whatever the League wants, they normally gets. At this point, she feels very protective of Laurel and because of Laurel she feels protective of Team Arrow. She knows that if she accepts their help that she is now dragging outsiders into what she considers personal, family matters. I think she’s very reluctant to accept their help because she knows what it will mean for them and that it could result in their death as well.

IGN: You mentioned Nyssa changing and opening up emotionally in a way that she hasn’t before. Has that been fun for you as an actress, having introduced this character with this wall up, to peal that away a little bit at a time?

Law: Nyssa is so much fun for me to play. It’s always fun to play a character who is strictly black and white because that’s not how regular humans function, or most humans -- I don’t function that way -- in society. So to have such a strong sense of right and wrong and have it clash so completely with other people’s sense of right and wrong is really fun. Especially when Nyssa is willing to go to the ends of the world to enforce her convictions. So getting to have Nyssa interact in a normal, everyday life situation, such as a diner, is fun because little things that you take for granted such as knowing that ketchup goes on fries, or something as simple as that, it’s just a mystery to her.

IGN: So will there be a karaoke episode?

Law: [Laughs] I’m pushing for it and I think Marc [Guggenhim] is going to be on board soon.

IGN: [Laughs] They did one for the Flash! I see no reason that they can’t have one for Arrow too. What’s it like becoming more of the ongoing world of the series lately and seeing her stick around Starling and interact more with the characters?

Law: It’s a great character and I think the writers have been doing such a great job with developing her and taking it slowly and not pushing her onto the audience too much. It’s great because the fans have really accepted her. I think some fans love her and other fans are still kind of like, “I don’t know what to do with this character and what to think about it” but I think that’s the fun of it. Getting to interact with the rest of the cast of Arrow and the crew is just a joy because they’re all amazing. There’s not a single person who is terrible. I love working with them and Vancouver is fantastic. It’s just a fun character. Getting to play a girl who kicks ass all over the place is badass.

IGN: This is a very big world they’ve created. There’s two ongoing shows and a third that might be on its way. Would it be fun for you if you got to bring Nyssa over to Barry Allen’s neck of the woods or maybe the folks in this new spinoff?

Law: I think Nyssa’s character would be so much fun to watch in The Flash world because she just really wouldn’t fit in which I think would be hysterical. But that also means we have to see if she lives past this episode, so there’s that.

Nyssa al Ghul is about to enter the fight of her life.

On Wednesday’s all-new Arrow, Oliver Queen transforms into the rightful heir to the Demon as Al Sah-him, but he has one final task left to complete: Get rid of all his contenders – including Nyssa. While Oliver succumbs to his new status quo, Nyssa has been steering clear of League activities, acting as Laurel’s sensei and figuring out her next move. But when Oliver returns to Starling City to fulfill his destiny as Al Sah-him, all hell breaks loose.

Actress Katrina Law jumped on the phone with ETonline ahead of tonight’s episode to dish on all things Arrow, including the impending showdown between Nyssa and Oliver.

ETonline: It’s great to see Nyssa back for the last episodes of the season! It’s been a few weeks since we’ve last seen Nyssa. What has she been up to and how does she feel about what is going on with Oliver, Team Arrow and her father Ra’s al Ghul – there’s so much drama.

Katrina Law: (Laughs.) Yup! For the most part Nyssa has been hanging out with Laurel and she’s been putting her through her training program, trying to get her to become less of an emotional attachment fighter and more about technique and having a foundation for her fighting style. And I think Laurel has been taking her on shopping sprees and getting her hair did. (Laughs.) For the most part, Nyssa has been trying not to focus on the League of Assassins and everything that’s going on. She’s pissed and angry and hurt but there’s nothing she can do about it, so she’s trying to put her focus on other places. But yeah, it’s great to be back.

But she’ll be forced to confront her feelings about her father betraying her in short order. How difficult is it for Nyssa to come to terms with the fact that Ra’s passed her over as heir to the demon for Oliver?

Nyssa is beyond hurt and devastated that she was passed over by her father for the next Ra’s al Ghul, though judging by her reactions that she’s had so far about having her title taken from her, Nyssa is very respectful of the League of Assassins, their traditions, their superstitions and all the ramifications that go along with being a League member. The fact that she didn’t rebel against her father when he took away her title and that she bowed down gracefully and said “OK, I’m going to remove myself from this situation” just shows how much respect Nyssa has for her father and also for the League of Assassins.

What is her true opinion about Oliver potentially taking up the Ra’s mantle?

It’s very hard for her to look at Oliver because I don’t think she’ll ever respect him as the new Ra’s al Ghul but I do think – I don’t know for sure – if push came to shove, she would accept him as the new Ra’s al Ghul because that’s just what the League does. You follow tradition. Your entire life is in service of the League so whatever is best for the League is what you do even if it may go against your personal wants and needs.

Is there a very small part of her that thinks, “Maybe this is my way out of the only life I’ve ever known”?

That is a very optimistic and healthy point of view that you have there! (Laughs.) I don’t necessarily think Nyssa has it. Nyssa is a fighter – there’s no talk of suicide, there’s none of that, but at the same time, she’s so hurt and so bitter that she’s trying her best to get through her day without feeling this impending rage. By helping Laurel, that’s been a great therapy for Nyssa – the fact that Laurel has been kind and has opened up her heart, her world and even her home to Nyssa is something that she’s never experienced before and didn’t expect, and by having a purpose outside of the League right now has been helpful. It’s also been helping Nyssa see that there are different shades of the world other than black and white. There are things besides death and agendas outside the League of Assassins that she’s experiencing for the first time – I don’t know that she really wants them, but maybe, if she lives past this episode, maybe she would embrace them. The world outside of the one she’s used to she’s very curious about but she struggles between what she knows and what she’s learning.

In what we’ve seen from the promos, one of Oliver’s first tasks as Al Sah-him is to bring Nyssa back to Nanda Parbat. What can we expect from Nyssa vs. Oliver?

It’s life or death basically. When you accept the role of Ra’s al Ghul, one of your duties it to take out your contenders, and Ra’s says to Oliver or Al Sah-him, now that you’ve accepted this role, you have to eliminate your contenders. Everybody knows that one of his biggest contenders is Nyssa. When Oliver comes to Starling, it’s essentially to kill Nyssa or bring her back to Nanda Parbat to be killed. This episode is life or death for her.

Oliver goes through a massive transformation to become Al Sah-him, and I imagine it’s not just physical changes he endures. Are there certain things about the League that Nyssa is aware of that Oliver should have also considered before joining?

I don’t know that Oliver knew exactly what he was getting into when he accepted the title of Ra’s al Ghul. A lot of this is going to be a surprise to him as it will be for the audience. Definitely the memory wipe or at least the transformation from Oliver to Al Sah-him is debating your past or not having respect for your past anymore. It changes a person and it makes you do things you would never do before and it makes you believe in things [you never would have] – you’re essentially being brainwashed into becoming another person who solely functions for the League of Assassins. Before, Oliver’s main concern was the safety of the people in Starling City, his family and friends. That is no longer his primary concern.

Back in March, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that there would be a second wedding. Some fans have speculated that Nyssa could possibly be in play. How connected is she to said wedding?

Nyssa is connected to the wedding as much as any other member of Team Arrow is connected to the wedding. Everybody is shocked and nobody sees it coming. I can’t say too much about it but it’s definitely a shock to everybody.

An early finale hint put Ra’s, Oliver and Nyssa in a scene filmed on a new set that looked like a cargo plane of some sort. Anything you can hint to?

I can’t speak specifically to my character being there, but it’s definitely a showdown of epic proportions. I did see the cargo plane – they built it from scratch and it’s amazing! It was on these hydraulic lifts so the whole thing actually moves and there’s a safety zone you couldn’t be in because if you were in that safety zone and the thing hit you, you would have broken bones all over the place because that was how violently this thing was shaking. Everybody who saw it, their jaws just hit the floor. Whatever that scene is, it’s epic and massive and it’s wonderful and I’m excited to see it!

- Katrina Law sobre la amenaza a Nyssa Al Ghul (accesshollywood):
Katrina Law sobre la amenaza a Nyssa Al Ghul
29 Abril, 2015 10:06 AM EDT

The man formerly known as Oliver Queen is coming for Nyssa al Ghul on "Arrow."

Now that he has been renamed Al Sah-Him (also the name of Wednesday's episode), and is the new Heir to the Demon, Ra's al Ghul will be ordering the Arrow to take out rivals, and at the top of the list is Katrina Law's Nyssa al Ghul.

But, when the episode begins, Nyssa is completely unaware that Oliver accepted Ra's offer. When she learns the news -- over fries with her new pal, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) -- things quickly get very, very serious. Katrina previewed Nyssa's reaction to the news, and more when she spoke with Access Hollywood.

AccessHollywood.com: Finally the Nyssa episode we have all been waiting for. But before we get into the details, where do you think Nyssa's been since we last saw her? Obviously in some of the [publicity] photos, she's wearing different clothes.
Katrina Law: I think she's been on shopping sprees with Laurel. She's been doing a lot of hang out time in Laurel's apartment and she is probably going out and teaching Laurel how to fight in real life situations and spending a lot of time at the gym. But I think a lot of shopping sprees.

Access: (Laughs) Nice. So one of the things in the trailer was Ra's telling Oliver that there are other contenders [to be Heir to Ra's]. Is Nyssa the one he's coming after?
Katrina: Yes. … In the one scene where you see me sitting with Laurel at the diner, Laurel kind of casually drops [the information] that Oliver has now accepted this role of [the next] Ra's al Ghul and that she's been keeping it from her and Nyssa stands up and freaks out… and Laurel doesn't understand why. And the reason is because when you accept the role of Ra's al Ghul, one of the things that has to happen is you need to take out all of your [potential rivals]… and Nyssa, for sure, has been a contender this entire time and so now she knows the League is after her.

Access: I've wondered if maybe Ra's carried some leftover guilt because he had to leave his original family in order to become Ra's himself and if maybe by making Oliver his heir, if that was going to free up his daughter [to have a life]. But it sounds like that's actually not the case at all.
Katrina: I think, in defense of my daddy, I think he is very career driven (laughs), and what is best for the career also means what is best for the family, and being how my family and his family and our career is the League of Assassins, anything that we do in our life needs to be in honor or in service of, or in protection of the League of Assassins. So essentially, when you are a League of Assassins member, your entire life has now become a dedication to the good of the community and it's no longer freewill. So, I think one of the things that my father has accepted very much in his life is that his life is in service of the League of Assassins and everything that he does is for the better of it. … One of the things Nyssa, I think, has not quite come to terms with, especially because she did fall in love with an outsider, is that she doesn't understand that everything has to be in service to [the League]. So she's still kind of the rebellious teenager whereas the father is going, 'This is the best thing for the family and you need to sacrifice. And even if that means your life, you need to sacrifice for the League of Assassins.' … When it comes to the heart, I think my father, Ra's al Ghul really does love Nyssa in his own way, but she will always be second to the League of Assassins.

Access: I was hoping there was a bit of heart left in him. So I have to ask, how does Nyssa see Al Sah-Him (Oliver)? Does she think he might be able to be turned back into Oliver Queen? Would that be her ultimate goal?
Katrina: No… Nyssa knows the League ways and once the League has turned you, you are turned for life and if you decide to go against the League -- there is no dropping out. The only person that has ever dropped out or has been released from the League is Malcolm Merlyn and I think it will be explained, maybe not this season, maybe next season or somewhere in DC comic-land, why he was released and not killed.

Access: One of the things that's been talked about on the show is about how old Ra's is. Do you know how old Nyssa is? Do you have any idea how old she is?
Katrina: Well, I think they changed it a little bit, but I know in the DC Comics, Nyssa is essentially 430-some years old and I think her father is like 600-some years old. … In regards to this world, I think they're just making Ra's over 100 years old. So I would say Nyssa is probably… 60s? (laughs)

Access: That's interesting. So she's probably had a fair few brushes with death in her own life.
Katrina: Yeah. I'm just guessing. I really don't know. I'm sure they'll come out with an episode and find out she's really like 5.

Access: You got to spend a lot of time working with Katie Cassidy in this episode. How was that for you because those are [different] kinds of scenes for your character than she's had on the show.
Katrina: In general, I love working with Katie Cassidy. That woman is so prepared and professional and just talented and when she shows up to a scene, it is a joy to work with her because she is so present. When it comes to the scene in the diner… it was so much fun because one – we get to eat French fries during a scene. It was one of the few times that Nyssa was genuinely allowed to smile and have fun and the two characters got to smile and just kind of connect and it's always fun doing a scene with another strong female character.

- Katrina Law habla sobre el interpretar un personaje LGBT con respeto (mtv):
Katrina Law habla sobre el interpretar un personaje LGBT con respeto
Por Alex Zalben 28 Abril 2015

As the third spectacular season of “Arrow” comes to a close, we’ve only fallen more in love with Katrina Law’s anti-heroic Nyssa al-Ghul. She’s gone from a two-note bad guy, to an ally of Team Arrow, to a heartbroken daughter on the run, and we’ve been with her every step of the way.

On tonight’s (April 29) episode, “Al Sah-Him,” everything comes to a (demon’s) head, as Nyssa is chased down by the League of Assassins. Before that all goes down, though, MTV News talked to Law about what’s next for Nyssa — as well as portraying one of the only fully fleshed out LGBT comic book characters on TV.

MTV News: What can you tease coming up for Nyssa in the next episode?

Katrina Law: This episode is life or death for Nyssa. She is essentially in a fight for her life! The League Of Assassins are after her… And you get to find out what happens by the end.

MTV: It’s been fascinating to see Nyssa develop over these past few seasons, from a foil for Sara, into a fully blown character. On your end, what’s it been like seeing her develop?

Law: Playing this role has been an honor, and has been so much fun. To be able to say in general that I am part of the DC world kind of makes me geek out on so many levels it’s not even funny… But I think between Greg Rucka, who originally created Nyssa, along with the “Arrow” writers, Mark Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg and everybody else that is involved, they’ve made me such a beautiful and complicated character to play.

And granted, Nyssa is a little bit different than a comic book version. But seeing how she hasn’t been in a lot of comics, it has been fun putting my own spin on her. Everybody across the board has really had a lot of fun putting all their own little touches, and knowing we are not breaking any bible that’s already out there on her.

It has been a fun fan reaction, from everybody going, ’I hate this woman because she goes against Oliver.’ She is a very polarizing character — and I think it is just fun to play those [types of] characters.

Getting to interact more with the Arrow, or Team Arrow, has been a lot of fun and I think by bring on Ra’s al Ghul, her father, it has just made Nyssa that much more rounded. She went from a plot point, to this fully flushed out character who is vulnerable and who needs help — but yet is still so strong at the same time. The interactions with her father have really allowed them to give some interesting scenes and backstory and dynamic to the Nyssa character.

MTV: In previous seasons we saw her with Sara, and we saw her with Oliver… And that’s pretty much it. This season, it’s been surprising to see her friendship blossom with Laurel, to see her play off of Thea… Has there been a particular interaction that was most surprising and most enjoyable to you?

Law: The Nyssa/Laurel interaction is my favorite by far. Working with Katie Cassidy is amazing… That woman is so prepared and so professional and talented, it’s such a joy to show up with her to work with her everyday. But then, to have two female characters that get to bond off of each other and grow together as characters and help each other out — and not be catty towards each other like other female characters are — has been very rewarding.

I really thank the writers for allowing that to happen. But story wise, even Nyssa was surprised that she felt a connection to Laurel. Out of all the people that she wanted to reach out to in her time of need, it happened to be Laurel. She really put herself on the line in a way that she normally doesn’t.

When she asked Laurel in the alleyway, “Do you want to talk about our Daddy issues? Or do you want to go grab something to eat?” And you can just see all over her face that had Laurel said no, that Nyssa probably just would have crawled away into a gutter somewhere and just cried.

But Laurel’s kindness to Nyssa is something [she] found very shocking and unexpected, because it is not what she grew up with — and it is not what she is used to out of people.

MTV: One aspect of the character that hasn’t necessarily played into the season, Nyssa is one of the few LGBT characters on television that just is that way… That it isn’t necessarily the major facet of her character, it just adds another layer to her. When you’ve interacted with fans in person or at conventions, have you gotten any positive stories? Any stories about people being inspired by Nyssa in any way?

Law: I know that there was this woman on Twitter who basically — and you know this could all just be fake online interactivity, but I am going to assume that it is real, and that people on the internet don’t lie — but she basically said that because of the Nyssa/Sara storyline, that it gave her the push to come out to her friends and her family. She just kind of put it out there.

That is the beauty of having characters that don’t make a big deal out of being gay, or lesbian, or whatever. They are just what they are, and that is acceptable — and that nobody should question that and that love is love.

So, my fan interaction has been great. In person, people love the storyline, they love the characters… And every now and then I get a couple of religious zealots that don’t like the character — you know they are out there — so they are going to do their thing and I have to respect them for that as well.

But I really respect the writers as well for not making it an issue that Nyssa didn’t choose to become a lesbian because something terrible happened to her… That she just is this way. And I’m really happy that they didn’t decide that she would suddenly hook up with a man, that she was swayed into… They give her the honor to be what she is.

MTV: Do you feel a responsibility towards this aspect of the character? To make sure the show treats her in the right way?

Law: Yes… There is a fear, there is always a fear — and I don’t necessarily feel that with these writers in particular, it is more of a generalized fear — to suddenly have her become straight because some man was able to sway her.

That’s not how this world works. I don’t think I am going to suddenly become a lesbian, or some guy is suddenly going to become gay because he’s hanging out with other guys. It doesn’t really happen like that in the real world. So there was a fear, in order to placate audiences, or just give a storyline that they were going to do that… But so far, they haven’t and it doesn’t look like they are going to. And I love that.

MTV: On the opposite end of the spectrum, maybe a little less seriously, I am sure she is going to be pretty busy being chased by assassins — but is there a chance Nyssa can find love again after Sara?

Law: I think she is going to try! With Nyssa becoming more open and vulnerable, and just starting to see the world in a different way… Sara really kicked off something in Nyssa that she wasn’t privy to before, and it opened her up emotionally. At the end of the day, Nyssa is going to want to feel loved, and is very capable of loving somebody greatly as well.

MTV: Heading into the last few episodes of the season, things got pretty apocalyptic in Starling City. What will we see this time?

Law: Pretty much the same thing! [Laughs] It is going to be epic, and big, and bold… And yeah, lots of drama happens, lot of mayhem happens and you are going to be on the edge of your seat. Nobody is safe. Nobody is safe by the end of the season, so it will be fun to see who makes it out alive.

Katrina Law habla sobre las complejas relaciones de Nyssa con Laurel, Ra's al Ghul y más
Por Russ Burlingame 29/04/2015

Tonight's episode of Arrow sees Nyssa Raatko, the daughter of Ra's al Ghul and former Heir to the Demon, in the sights of the League of Assassins after leaving her father's side to take up training Laurel Lance, the Black Canary, in Starling City.

Ironically, it's Oliver Queen who's after her, while she sides with Team Arrow in a reversal of their long-entrenched positions in the series.

Katrina Law, who plays Nyssa, joined ComicBook.com to talk about the episode.

This week is a big episode for you; has it been interesting to play off of Matt Nable? Is it challenging since you have such an elaborate relationship but so little screen time with him?

Well, the wonderful thing about Matt Nable is he's so incredibly talented and rounded in his acting that it actually makes my life easier working with him. We joke all the time that he and I feel that we have a very believable, excruciatingly terrible father-daughter relationship and as soon as we get done with a scene, we just look at each other and we start giggling because we have so much fun, just being dysfunctional towards each other.

I think that Matt Nable and I have a really good chemistry so it hasn't been that hard working with him. We work in very similar ways and when I'm acting with him, there are moments where I think "Oh! This man could be my father, and I have no problem bowing down to him and respecting him and also being fearful of him." Also, he has no reflection of my real-life father because my real-life father is amazing and wonderful. But I also think it helps that Matt Nable has a daughter himself and he's used to chastising her, because there are a couple of times when he's chastised me on set or during the scene and I actually kind of cringe for her, I'm like "Oh, Daddy, no, sorry!" So it's been a lot of fun and it's been very easy and fortunately Matt Nable and I get along really well, so finding chemistry and the levels and the layers hasn't been hard.

Nyssa was not a very well-known character outside of hardcore comic fans. As you've developed this character arguably as much as most of the comic book writers who have dealt with her, has it been gratifying to go from every interview starting with "When are we going to see Talia?" to having a distinct identity of your own?

[Laughs] It has been, and you know, you always want people to love your character, because you're putting your work out there and you want people to appreciate it and it's really gratifying when they do. You bring a sense of life to the character that they can relate to, whether they bond onto the character because they love it or hate it or whatever.

But I think Greg Rucka, who created Nyssa, did a wonderful job. He created a really complex character and even though she's a little different in the Arrow version, between Greg Rucka and Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, they just made this beautiful model for me to play with and to flesh out.

It is less stressful to not be Talia, to be honest. She's been done so many times that you kind of feel like there's a bible that you have to stick to. So when it comes to Nyssa, giving her a kind of British accent, making her a gay character, designing the look of her costume, I think it's kind of been a free-for-all and that's been really liberating and fun for everybody across the board, including hair and makeup and wardrobe and the writers and myself.

I know a lot of people have been crying out for the Talia character and I do think that it would be a lot of fun for sister and sister to kind of go after each other since I do know that in the comics, Nyssa at one point kills Talia over and over, trying to get her to join the League of Assassins, so there's another dysfunctional relationship to explore if they ever wanted to. But it's been great. I love playing Nyssa; she's a beautiful, complex character.

We've seen a lot more of Nyssa's human side this year, especially with Laurel. Is it challenging to find that level when you're being so different from always-badass Nyssa last year?

I definitely think as long as the script is good, you just kind of roll with it, but it has been gratifying to see the softer side of Nyssa. I think no matter who you are, everyone has a softer side and a vulnerable side, it's just a matter of when does it come out and who brings it out. I do know that first scene where I find Laurel in the alley and I say, "I was looking for a reminder of your sister," and she says, "Well, let's go get something to eat," I remember for the first time having to be vulnerable and having my power taken away from me, and just being a little insecure as an actor, going "Is this right?" Because it suddenly feels like a very real person instead of this very over-the-top, indestructible badass chick from another world.

So there was a little bit of insecurity but I just had to trust that the director would tell me if something was going wrong, but they never said anything and I think it worked.

But since then, it's been easier because now that I know that's acceptable for the character, it's easier to just go there. And Nyssa has become more beloved to me because she is a well-rounded person.

You know, earlier in the season when you had been defeated and Oliver had you in the cage, I remember that you did a really good job of giving off a vibe that said your character was sitting there thinking "If this door opens, I'll drop him in one punch." Do you think it's fair to say that when we do get a look into Nyssa's more vulnerable side, it's almost always on her terms?

I don't know that I would consider it a conscious decision on her part. I feel like there are people who have had very hard lives or rough upbringings one way or another and when you first meet them, they're hard to approach and difficult to talk to but then there's that one person who sees them fully. I don't know that the person necessarily has the choice. I think there's just people who can touch them and can reach them. And I think that Sara could touch Nyssa and reach her in a way that nobody else could, and we're finding out very quickly that so does Laurel.

- Arrow preview: ¿Quién es Oliver Queen? (EW):
Arrow preview: ¿Quién es Oliver Queen?
Por Natalie Abrams 06 Mayo 2015 — 1:05 PM EDT

As Oliver Queen—ahem, Al Sah-him (Stephen Amell)—inches closer to becoming the next Ra’s al Ghul, Team Arrow will make one last ditch effort to save his soul before the season finale, which is aptly titled “My Name Is Oliver Queen.”

“We’ve always said the season is about identity, and Oliver trying to decide between being the Arrow and being Oliver Queen,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells EW. “That’s obviously very present, as the title suggests, in the finale. Oliver’s arc over the course of the last episodes of the season relates to this question of ‘am I Oliver, or am I the Arrow.’ [It’s] very focused on that threesome” of Oliver, Diggle (David Ramsey) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards).

With Al Sah-him’s marriage to Nyssa (Katrina Law) on the horizon, and the subsequent potential destruction of Starling City to follow—wow, what a honeymoon!—Guggenheim teases that this year’s season-ender has the “same epic scope that we’ve established in season 1 and 2. It’s got some of the most emotional scenes that we’ve had in a season finale. We always say on Arrow that the season finale is time to go big or go home. I’m really optimistic [it] will feel every bit as big in terms of story and production value as our previous two season finales.”

But the team may find help from outside forces. “There’s going to be a big character returning for the finale that we haven’t announced yet,” Guggenheim says. EW can reveal that character is The Flash (Grant Gustin)—but even with the scarlet speedster on the case, Guggenheim cautions that fans should be very worried about their favorite heroes.

“We’re at the point in the season where, I think our fans know, it’s usually when the culling happens, so I think everyone knows that they’ve got reason to be afraid,” he says, noting that there won’t be a traditional cliffhanger leaving fans wondering about their favorite characters’ fates. “The season 3 finale of Arrow is very definitive. It really feels like the end, not just of season 3, but of the first three seasons.”

Though Guggenheim is cagey on what will happen in the finale, he does reveal what won’t happen. “The Arrow finale doesn’t relate to the spinoff at all,” the EP says of the planned project featuring Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz and many other familiar faces. “It’s pure Arrow.”
