It’s a problem that plagues almost every drama series on broadcast television that is not a procedural crime drama: How to keep the narrative’s ongoing mythology interesting as the show’s characters age through the seasons without jumping any sharks.
You don’t hear much about it, especially in the mainstream media, but Smallville, which on Thursday will begin its eighth season (its third on The CW, following five on The WB), has throughout its run emerged as a textbook study on how to roll with the realities of television production and remain vital while staying true to its core story. The first seven seasons of this series should be required viewing for every show-runner who is fortunate enough to face these challenges.
The Season 8 premiere makes clear that this isn’t the Smallville that captivated viewers and advertisers alike when it debuted in 2001. (I remember the excitement in the ballroom at New York City’s Sheraton Hotel in May of that year when The WB presented clips from the thrilling Smallville pilot to hundreds of advertisers and dozens of journalists.) The series, like its characters, is grown up now. When it began, it was about teenagers -- including Clark Kent (Tom Welling), the most famous super powered humanoid alien in the history of American popular culture – coping with the pressures high school, family and first romance, plus the lingering after effects of a devastating, long-ago meteor shower, the remnants of which continued to turn local citizens into Kryptonite-fueled madmen, if not genuine monsters. The Smallville canvas has expanded dramatically over the years to include interplanetary intrigue, cross-dimensional conflicts, the introduction of additional aliens (Supergirl, Brainiac, the Martian Manhunter) and other super-powered individuals (The Green Arrow, the Black Canary, Impulse, Aquaman, Cyborg), star-crossed romances (Clark Kent and Lana Lang, Lois Lane and Oliver Queen), a marriage made in hell (Lana Lang and Lex Luthor), three significant deaths (Whitney Fordman, Jonathan Kent, Lionel Luthor), and the departures of the two women Clark has loved most, his mother (for a political career in Washington, D.C.) and Lana (to begin a new life and allow Clark to fulfill his true destiny unencumbered by their relationship), as well as his best friend, Pete.
Smallville these days bears little resemblance to its younger self, yet it still feels remarkably fresh. Only two characters remain from its first season: Clark Kent, now finally pursuing a career in journalism at the Daily Planet and newly determined to move into adulthood (with ongoing guidance from his mentor, Oliver Queen), and his new best friend Chloe Sullivan, an intrepid young reporter who recently developed healing powers as a result of exposure to Kryptonite fragments from that long ago disaster. (She is now a “meteor freak,” as people who are dramatically altered by Kryptonite are known.) With Lana out of the picture (though she will briefly return in the months to come), Clark is free to pursue a new romance with his new colleague, Lois Lane, while Chloe finally declares her love for cub photographer Jimmy Olsen. And with Lex out of the way (mysteriously missing after the Fortress of Solitude collapsed on top of him at the end of Season 7), Clark has a new adversary in corporate cut-throat Tess Mercer, Lex’s designated successor as CEO of LuthorCorp.
Wisely, the season premiere includes appearances by three heroes from the still young Justice League: Green Arrow, Black Canary and Aquaman, all looking for Clark, who has also gone missing after the collapse of the Fortress. Martian Manhunter also returns at a critical time. Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) will remain on the canvas indefinitely, and the others will likely return. The growing awareness of other super-powered humans from well beyond the Smallville borders has been the most tantalizing subplot in the show’s ever-expanding mythology. For millions of comic book fans past and present it is as if the D.C. Comics universe is taking shape right before their eyes. The potential spin-offs and movie franchises are dazzling.
And yet, that isn’t what Smallville is about. It remains the story of Clark Kent, a young man who, upon reaching adolescence, began to realize that he was different from other kids. Young Clark’s adventures were stories of family, friendship, community, responsibility and tolerance. Clark has been somewhat slower to mature than most young men, despite prodding from Lana and Oliver, but he has experienced enough loss and seen enough change to realize that it is time to step up and be the person he was meant to be. That doesn’t simply mean taking on the challenges of manhood. It means respecting the responsibilities that come with great power and accepting the challenges that come with being Superman.
There. I said it. Superman. When Smallville premiered, its creators freely used the expression “no flights, no tights.” This series would be a reimagining of the Superman saga, not a simple retelling. Those producers and writers (and those who have since assumed control) have remained true to their original pledge. But Clark has flown quite a bit in recent seasons. It may be time for him to finally don that classic costume, especially if this proves to be the final season for this unexpectedly durable show.

September 17, 2008 - It may be after midnight on the Smallville set in Vancouver, but Allison Mack, along with the crew and several guest actors, are still hard at work filming a scene for Season 8 of the CW series. In the scene being shot, Mack's character, Chloe Sullivan, approaches a memorial set up on a street corner in Metropolis, mourning the murder of a young woman. At the memorial she has an encounter with some other young mourners, who have some serious reasons to be concerned.
Despite the late hour, Mack graciously is still up for a chat about the show, taking a seat with me at an outdoor café set where many hours ago -- there was still daylight! -- I watched her film a scene where she sat and talked with Davis Bloome (Sam Witwer), the kind paramedic Chloe's befriends this season… who just happens to also be the Smallville incarnation of Superman foe Doomsday.
Along with Tom Welling, Mack is the only current series regular on Smallville who was on the show from the beginning and I chatted with her about the many changes her character has gone through, along with what's to come this season for her both in front of and behind the camera – Mack is preparing to make her debut as a director on an upcoming Smallville episode.
IGN: When last we saw your character, she was in the midst of both a proposal and an arrest.
Mack: At least I'm not dying this time!
IGN: [Laughs] That's right, you're not dying this time. So is it a prison marriage for Chloe?
Mack: [Laughs] Hopefully not. No, not thus far.
IGN: So her legal troubles are resolved?
Mack: We always find a way out of things, so yeah, she gets out no problem and it's all resolved quite nicely.
IGN: Where is she at in her relationship with Jimmy? She was definitely surprised by the proposal.
Mack: Yeah, I think that she's very much in love with Jimmy. As you can see, I'm wearing a ring on my left hand, so obviously the engagement is moving forward and we had an engagement party in the past episode, which was a ball. We're just going through all the steps of getting married, which is totally weird for me as a person, to be playing all of those things.
IGN: Aaron [Ashmore] told me it was the same for him.
Mack: Yeah, when he bent on one knee and propsed, I was like, "Weird! Weird. Stand up, that's weird."
IGN: It's through you that we meet Davis Bloome, right?
Mack: Yes. There's a little bit of a love triangle that happens between Davis and myself and Jimmy and my job now is no longer a reporter at the Daily Planet. I'm now working with meteor infected at the Isis Foundation as sort of a counselor and [creating] a support network. I'm trying to create a place where the meteor infected can come and feel safe. It's mainly geared towards youth and so they're all very frightened and nervous about coming out and stepping forward and saying that they have meteor powers.
Davis discovers this about me very early on. That's how we meet. And he takes a liking to me, because he knows there's something not so right about him, but he's not sure what it is. So our relationship starts there and then it just kind of barrels forward.
IGN: What's Chloe's take on Davis?
Mack: She really likes him. I think that there's a chemistry and a symbiosis between the two of them that she's never felt before with anyone else.
IGN: Cassidy [Freeman, who plays new LuthorCorp boss Tess Mercer]] told me that while Chloe isn't back at the Planet, Tess and Chloe do need certain things from each other.
Mack: Absolutely. She's got stuff I need and I've got stuff she needs. And I don't like her, because she works for Lex Luthor, but she has access to certain things that I know that I need to help Clark. So it's sort of this tenuous dance, as it always is, that we do.
IGN: And Aaron told me you have an interesting episode where the two of you are kidnapped?
Mack: We did. We were tied up on the floor together and then tied up to electric chairs together. He's such an amazing man to work with. If I have to be tied up on the floor to anyone, other than my beau, he would be first in line for sure.
IGN: You had a fun dynamic with Oliver and the Justice League where you were kind of their eyes and ears. With Oliver back, will Chloe be continuing that role?
Mack: Yeah, I mean, she's a multitasker, so she is doing a lot of side work for Oliver, although Oliver is sort of going through his own struggle of whether or not he wants to continue to be a superhero. But she's also really diving in with her work at the Isis Foundation and continuing to help Clark, so she's quite a busy woman1
IGN: You've taken this character from a high school freshman to someone who is now engaged and running a foundation. Is it cool to look back at that whole journey you've gone on with her?
Mack: Oh, it's amazing. It's amazing because it's so personal to me. I've really grown up on this show, so to be able to see just myself really evolve within the character has been really cool. And I think that because I am not a part of the [Superman] legend traditionally, there was a lot more leeway as far as allowing me to really develop the character myself and have a really strong trajectory. So, it's fun, because I think that she, out of all the characters, has really evolved the most.
IGN: You've already gotten powers on the show, but I hear there might be some evolution there too.
Mack: They are evolving a little bit. Everything is so shifting and changing in Chloe's world, so it's an interesting season for her, that's for sure.
IGN: So far Chloe has had an incredibly helpful power, but not one that's very flashy or kick ass. Would you like her to…
Mack: …Be a little more flashy and kick ass? Ahh, you know, I'm a woman of modesty. I think I'm okay with having something that's a little bit more pragmatic.
IGN: You're directing an episode this season. Was that something you'd been thinking about in the back of your mind for awhile?
Mack: You know what, when I was nine years old I said I wanted to be a director, because I didn't want to have to kiss boys on camera. And then I had a director actually give me the opportunity to direct a scene and I didn't know what to do. I got very nervous and scared and swore off directing after that. But then I directed a play when I was about 16 and when they approached me with the opportunity to do this, I was really flattered, because it wasn't something that had entered my thought realm, and in fact I said no at first. And then I was walking down the street with my boyfriend and he was like, "Are you crazy? This is an amazing opportunity! You can't pass this up!" So I said, "Okay, great." So I've spent the last year and a half trying to prepare myself as best I could for this opportunity, because I really want to make the most of it and I don't want to let anyone down.
IGN: You've seen Tom [Welling] and Michael [Rosenbaum] direct episodes. Did you talk to them about their experiences?
Mack: I've spoken to Tom about it, yeah, quite a bit. He's really been lovely about sort of mentoring me, as far as how to learn and the best way to take in the information that I can from the people around set and stuff like that. He's really a wonderful man and a very good teacher, so I'm appreciated that greatly.
IGN: You and Tom are the two original cast members still on the show. Aaron told me a funny strory about you referencing something from the early days of the show to him and he had to tell you, "I wasn't there for that."
Mack: [Laughs] Yeah, I was like, "Oh my god! That's right! Where were you?"
IGN: When you have new additions like Sam [Witwer] and Cassidy [Freeman], do you resist going, "Let me show you around, kid!"
Mack: A little bit, but you know, Cassidy and Sam are such pros themselves that they don't really need much help in being shown around. They bring a really amazing quality to the show and I know for me, I pay more attention to my work when I'm working with them, because of their commitemtn to what they're doing. So I think they're really helping to raise the show to another level and they're just wonderful actors. They're a great addition. They don't need my help.
IGN: There's a contingent among the fandom who would love nothing more than to see Clark and Chloe get together. Would that be a storyline you'd like to get to play out?

Es más, recuerdo que hizo una vez alusión al capítulo de "Spell" el de las brujas y comentó que ése rodaje fue muy duro para las chicas (KK, AM, ED), porque estaban todas... "¡Ohhhhh, por Dios!... ¡Wow, qué músculos!... ¡Qué grande es!"

Chloe and Clark will not be together, but they do share some exceptionally sweet moments in the season premiere—several scenes will be great fodder for your Chlark fanvids. Executive producer Darren Swimmer told me about Chloe's relationship with the erstwhile Doomsday: "Davis and Chloe trust each other and like each other. There are some romantic underpinnings. There's a lot of chemistry between them. There will be a bit of a triangle between Davis, Jimmy and Chloe."

Lois es una de esas personas a las que siempre terminas adorando después de un rato, pero al principio, estás como 'Whoa, date media vuelta.' No va a actuar de forma amable. Lo que tengo que decir de Lois es que ella es honesta y siente que hay una característica en Tess Mercer en la que no puede confiar. No le gusta, trabaja para Lex, a Lois no le gusta Lex, ok. Q: He leído que eras una gran fan del personaje de Lois Lane antes de que te llegara el papel, ¿qué la hace tan especial para tí?
Erica: "Lo que me encantaba inicialmente del personaje de Lois Lane era su inteligencia y su independencia. Es tan tremendamente independiente que nunca se ve a sí misma como a una víctima. Una de las cosas que adoro del personaje que estoy haciendo es que es humana y que lo admite. Q: Tuviste que trabajar con Margot Kidder, ¿le pediste algún consejo?
Erica: "Personalmente no trabajé con ella, pero estuve en una convención e hicimos un panel de preguntas y respuestas juntas. Lo que aprendí de estar a su alrededor fue que está tan segura de quién es, que lo sabe y que no se disculpa por ello. A nivel personal, encontré eso increíblemente inspirador y podías ver cómo emanaba eso de lo que ella hizo como actriz también. Descubrí en ella una mujer dinámica, encantadora y y muy segura de sí misma. Utilicé parte de eso para aplicármelo a mí misma como Erica, que siempre quiere estar perfecta, y para el personaje."
Q: ¿Qué tiene por delante tu personaje esta temporada en Smallville?
Erica: "Bueno, por lo que me encanta esta temporada es porque se está convirtiendo más en la mitología de Supermán, voy a estar involucrada en todo tipo de cosas. Voy a tener que abrirme más y hacer comedia, poner a prueba a Clark hasta un punto en el que se encuentre realmente incómodo. Van a hacer un capítulo completo en el que tienen que pretender ser una pareja para encontrar al chico malo. Ella disfruta realmente poniéndole en esa posición y se divierte un montón con ello. También, porque está constantemente investigando, siempre se está metiendo en problemas. Lo que me gusta sobre este personaje de Lois Lane es que ella tiene constantemente la verdad mirándola a la cara y aún ella no le ve. Están (TPTB) creando un montón de esas oportunidades.
Hay un episodio por venir que creo que será excitante hacia la mitología y es que ella ahora ha declarado su intención de conseguir la primera entrevista exclusiva mundial con este Supermán. ¡La gente estará entusiasmadísima con eso! Todo el camino va a realizarse bastante bien y Clark va a tener un montón de esas situaciones difíciles también y se va a dar cuenta que esta es Lois, es una bomba, va a ir tras ello como una loca. Y la ironía está en que ella va a esperar que él vaya tras ella, que investigue con ella."
Q: En general, ¿qué tipo de tónica está tomando la serie este año?
Erica: "Está llegando más a ese límite, pero creo que cada personaje está entrando más en sí mismo. Jay esa dualidad de Clar como Clark y Clark como Supermán. Está empezando a ser él mismo y darse cuenta de que necsita dar un paso hacia delante y hacer esto. Tienes a Oliver Queen, como Green Arrow. Incluso reconozco que hay un poquito de esa dualidad en Lois. Tiene esa confianza como periodista y en su interior está sintiendo 'Oh Dios mío, estoy completamente enamorada de esta persona, más enamorada de lo que nunca antes he estado de nadie'. Todo el mundo tiene un secreto."
Q: ¿Volverá Lana Lang esta temporada?
Erica: "Vamos a tener a Lana de vuelta un poco esta temporada, estoy segura que demasiado para disgusto de Lois. Creo que Lana está intentado abrirse camino un poco de nuevo".

Erica: "Lo único que puedo es hablar en nombre de todos, no puedo hablar específicamente de cómo se sienten, todos tenemos una excelente relación de trabajo y disfrutamos con lo que estamos haciendo. Hay mucha diversión al hacer una serie como esta. Realmente me encantaría que continuara."
Q: ¿Algo que decir a los fans?
Erica: "Me gustaría mandarles un gran grito para decirles hola y gracias por su apoyo. Por el hecho de que han resistido, nosotros estamos aquí durante ocho años. Gracias por haber apoyado tanto mi versión de Lois Lane. Es algo que tiene mucha tensión el hacerlo y la gente ha sido realmente positiva."
Cuando Smallville empezó hace 8 años, sabíamos que cuando Lois Lane finalmente llegara, el joven Clark Kent pronto haría esa transformación de niño a hombre y que la verdadera diversión empezaría.
Muchos fans se preguntaban quién finalmente interpretaría este altamente codiciado personaje, y cuado Erica Durance debutó como Lois Lane, no llevó mucho tiempo el darnos cuenta de que la tradición de encontrar a la mujer perfecta para este papel había continuado con esta preciosa y extremadamente talentosa actriz.
Tuve el placer de conversar con Erica y encontré que esta encantadora actriz era tan divertida y segura como el personaje que interpreta cada semana en Smallville....
Q: He leído que eras una gran fan del personaje de Lois Lane antes de que te llegara el papel, ¿qué la hace tan especial para tí?
Erica: "Lo que me encantaba inicialmente del personaje de Lois Lane era su inteligencia y su independencia. Es tan tremendamente independiente que nunca se ve a sí misma como a una víctima. Una de las cosas que adoro del personaje que estoy haciendo es que es humana y que lo admite. Tiene defectos, hace un montón de cosas con las que la gente gira la mirada, comete un montón de errores, pero dice sí, he sido yo, lo siento. Se levanta a sí misma y sigue adelante. Nunca se compadece de sí misma".
Q: Tuviste que trabajar con Margot Kidder, ¿le pediste algún consejo?
Erica: "Personalmente no trabajé con ella, pero estuve en una convención e hicimos un panel de preguntas y respuestas juntas. Lo que aprendí de estar a su alrededor fue que está tan segura de quién es, que lo sabe y que no se disculpa por ello. A nivel personal, encontré eso increíblemente inspirador y podías ver cómo emanaba eso de lo que ella hizo como actriz también. Descubrí en ella una mujer dinámica, encantadora y y muy segura de sí misma. Utilicé parte de eso para aplicármelo a mí misma como Erica, que siempre quiere estar perfecta, y para el personaje."
Q: ¿Qué tiene por delante tu personaje esta temporada en Smallville?
Erica: "Bueno, por lo que me encanta esta temporada es porque se está convirtiendo más en la mitología de Supermán, voy a estar involucrada en todo tipo de cosas. Voy a tener que abrirme más y hacer comedia, poner a prueba a Clark hasta un punto en el que se encuentre realmente incómodo. Van a hacer un capítulo completo en el que tienen que pretender ser una pareja para encontrar al chico malo. Ella disfruta realmente poniéndole en esa posición y se divierte un montón con ello. También, porque está constantemente investigando, siempre se está metiendo en problemas. Lo que me gusta sobre este personaje de Lois Lane es que ella tiene constantemente la verdad mirándola a la cara y aún ella no le ve. Están (TPTB) creando un montón de esas oportunidades.
Hay un episodio por venir que creo que será excitante hacia la mitología y es que ella ahora ha declarado su intención de conseguir la primera entrevista exclusiva mundial con este Supermán. ¡La gente estará entusiasmadísima con eso! Todo el camino va a realizarse bastante bien y Clark va a tener un montón de esas situaciones difíciles también y se va a dar cuenta que esta es Lois, es una bomba, va a ir tras ello como una loca. Y la ironía está en que ella va a esperar que él vaya tras ella, que investigue con ella."
Q: En general, ¿qué tipo de tónica está tomando la serie este año?
Erica: "Está llegando más a ese límite, pero creo que cada personaje está entrando más en sí mismo. Jay esa dualidad de Clar como Clark y Clark como Supermán. Está empezando a ser él mismo y darse cuenta de que necsita dar un paso hacia delante y hacer esto. Tienes a Oliver Queen, como Green Arrow. Incluso reconozco que hay un poquito de esa dualidad en Lois. Tiene esa confianza como periodista y en su interior está sintiendo 'Oh Dios mío, estoy completamente enamorada de esta persona, más enamorada de lo que nunca antes he estado de nadie'. Todo el mundo tiene un secreto."
Q: ¿Volverá Lana Lang esta temporada?
Erica: "Vamos a tener a Lana de vuelta un poco esta temporada, estoy segura que demasiado para disgusto de Lois. Creo que Lana está intentado abrirse camino un poco de nuevo".
Q: ¿Van los nuevos chicos al cargo de la serie a seguir manteniéndose en la regla de "no mallas, no vuelos"?
Erica: "¡Oh, no estoy segura! están rompiendo con muchas cosas esta temporada, pero no estoy segura. Así lo espero, pero todo depende del actual futuro de la serie y de cuánto dure. Es una de esas cosas que desarrollan en base al desenlace, ¿verdad? Veremos lo que finalmente le permiten hacer."
Q: ¿Piensas que puede ser la última temporada?
Erica: "Todos los años en los que he estado, intento asumir que es lo que estoy haciendo porque de otro modo estarías cantando victoria antes de tiempo. Siempre digo que nunca digas nunca, pero también que no creas que vas a estar aquí para siempre."
Q: ¿El cast es partidario de hacer otra temporada?
