It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Smallville Season 9!

The wait is over: Smallville returns Friday for its ninth (!) season (September 25, 8/7c, The CW). Even though the show has been around for a while, executive producer Brian Peterson is confident that “there’s still a huge arc for Clark [Tom Welling] in his learning trajectory before he decides to become Superman.” This season he’ll face off against Major Zod (The Tudors’ Callum Blue), another survivor from Clark’s homeworld Krypton, and team up with superheroes of the legendary Justice Society as well as a version of the Wonder Twins from the classic Super Friends cartoons.
Perhaps even more daunting than saving the world will be Clark’s struggle to maintaining the relationships he has established with his friends. “A lot of this came about when Brian and I were discussing why he isn’t Superman 24 hours a day. Why is he ever Clark Kent,” says Kelly Souders, Peterson’s fellow showrunner. “And for us the short answer is Lois Lane. Why bother ever getting into [the] Clark Kent [identity]? It’s because of the people he loves.” To that end, expect a love triangle between Clark, Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark’s pre-Superman alter ego, the Blur (shortened from last season’s Red Blue Blur moniker due to a new all-black costume).
Though Lois seemed drawn to Clark’s mild mannerisms, she also developed a soft spot for the Blur, who she sensed was a lonely hero who just needed someone to confide in. Says Peterson: “It’s going to be a season-long struggle with Lois between the person who’s right in front of her, who she’s fallen for, and her Achilles heel, which has always been the mysterious hero.”
The other woman in Clark’s life will have a busy year, too. Given the brush off from Clark in May's season finale, Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) takes another big step towards establishing a secret identity of her own. She is coming off a traumatic year—possessed by Braniac, attacked by Doomsday, failed marriage to Jimmy Olsen and Jimmy’s subsequent murder—but rather than having a pity party, she’ll immerse herself in her duties as Watchtower, a computer-whiz and information power-broker to the crime-fighting set. “What’s great is that she is in her element again as a sidekick,” Peterson says. “And not only to Clark, but to our entire fledgling superhero league.”
