SUGAR GROVE – Cutz & Stylz Hair Salon manager Bobbie McMillan doesn’t expect Russell Crowe to stop in her shop this week for a haircut when he’s taking a break from the filming of “Man of Steel.”
“They have a stylist on staff I’m sure,” McMillan said.
Like Superman’s identity, filming of the movie has been shrouded in secrecy.
Route 56 will be shut down from Route 47 to Galena Boulevard until 8 p.m. Wednesday for the filming of the new Superman movie, which stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Crowe as his biological father Jor-El. Other stars include Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as his adoptive parents and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
That stretch of Route 56 has been closed since 3 p.m. Sunday. McMillan had hoped to watch some of the filming, but security is tight. Her hair salon is located near Route 47.
“They should have chained it off and let people watch,” McMillan said.
Those who did try to get near the movie set were shooed away by security guards and Illinois state troopers.
What scenes are being filmed in Sugar Grove also is being kept a secret.
“We have a closed set and will not be disclosing any scenes of the movie,” said LeeAnne Muldoon, the movie’s publicist, in an email. “We are trying very hard to protect the story. I know it is very frustrating position to be in as we are having an impact on the Sugar Grove community with the road closure and we greatly appreciate the welcome we have received from the community.”
Sugar Grove Village President Sean Michels said he had heard a large jet engine was going to be brought in to create a tornado scene.
While the movie has been creating a buzz in Sugar Grove, he didn’t think it would provide much of an economic boost to Sugar Grove.
“It’s fun to have Sugar Grove in a major motion picture, but I don’t think anything will come of it,” Michels said.
Sugar Grove Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger had a similar take.
“On a regional basis, it’s a good thing,” Eichelberger said.
The movie is also being shot in several other communities, including Aurora, West Chicago and Plano.
He said Sugar Grove police are not being used for traffic control or security for the movie.
“We don’t have the manpower,” Eichelberger said.
He said there haven’t been many traffic problems related to the road closure.
“There were some minor backups on Route 47 Monday morning, but nothing significant,” Eichelberger said.
Justin Berdell, 20, of Sugar Grove, said he has driven past the movie set while making deliveries for Rosati’s Pizza in Sugar Grove.
“I’ve seen a lot full of cars, some of them smashed up,” Berdell said. “One of my friends said Russell Crowe was going to be there. I think that’s a long shot.”
Berdell initially was worried the road closure would adversely impact his deliveries.
“But it’s not that bad,” he said.
Vehicles traveling east on Route 30 have to exit onto Route 47, and then continue to Galena Boulevard to the Galena access ramp. Route 47 traffic will use the Galena access ramp to get onto Route 56.
Westbound traffic on Route 56 will have to exit onto Galena Boulevard to Route 47, then either stay on Route 47, or turn west onto Route 30.
Amy Czerwinski and her 7-year-old son, had gone past the movie set on Monday to get to the Bliss Creek Golf Club driving range.
“We weren’t able to see any movie stars, but it was exciting,” Czerwinski said.
However, she said her cousin bumped into Russell Crowe two weeks ago while shopping at Whole Foods in Naperville.
“He’s a cop in Aurora, and was in between shifts,” Czerwinski said. “He saw a guy in a black hoodie. Russell Crowe started talking to him.”
Czerwinski said her family will watch with interest when “Superman: Man of Steel” comes out.
“We’re going to try to see familiar scenes,” she said.
A traffic back-up is all part of the scene as they film a new Superman movie on Route 56 in Sugar Grove on Monday afternoon.
