La NBC se hace con la serie de "CONSTANTINE"

Warner Bros. TV y DC Comics están en racha en esta temporada de pilotos con un tercer proyecto de alto nivel.

Constantine, un drama basado en el personaje de DC Comics John Constantine (y que ya fue adaptado en la gran pantalla interpretado por Keanu Reeves), ha sido vendido a la NBC.

Está escrito/producido ejecutivamente por el productor ejecutivo de "El Mentalista" Daniel Cerone y David S. Goyer ("man of Steel"). Constantine se centra en el personaje de John Constantine, un enigmático e irreverente estafador que se convierte en un reluctante detective supernatural que es empujado a aceptar el rol de defendernos contra las fuerzas oscuras del más allá.

John Constantine, quien apareció por primera vez en 1985 como personaje recurrente en las series de horror de la Saga de The Swamp Thing, fue creado por Alan Moore, Steve Bissette y Jamie Delano. También se rumorea que el personaje aparecerá en la película de la Justice League Dark que la Warner Bros. tiene en proyecto con Guillermo del Toro.

"Constantine" stars Matt Ryan and Lucy Griffiths are excited about their new show. With a mix of horror, humor and hellish foes, the DC comics-based program may just be a hit on NBC's Friday nights in the fall. What do the stars have to say about "Constantine" now?

When asked about how to describe the show in terms of what others might already know, both stars find it a little complicated to find easy comparisons. "It's difficult because one of the things I like about it is it's really different," Griffiths explains. "But I guess you could say that it was like a love child between ... Over to you, Matt Ryan!"

Fortunately, Ryan is up to the challenge: "I think it's like ... It's great," he says. "It's the whole genre -- it's horror, it's got psychological elements to it as well, it's scary, it's humorous -- you know, John's got this whole British, sarcastic wit."

Griffiths agrees with that. "It reminds me of a couple of the old 'Batman' movies," the actress says. "Which isn't surprising, because the producer, David Goyer, is the same. But it seems to me like it has a sort of slightly retro vibe. Which seems really cool. It's sort of like, I don't know -- it seems like a movie. A movie that's a series."

One of the only worries the actors have is living up to the comic-book source material, "Hopefully we can try and stay as true to that as possible," Ryan says. "And hopefully it'll be a great show!" As for Griffiths, she thinks the show is safe as long as it sticks to its roots. "We can't really go wrong!" she exclaims.

Matt Ryan had a hellish way of describing his exorcist character in the new TV series Constantine.

“He's the kind of guy who would stick up his middle finger to the devil as he's making his way back to earth,” Ryan said.

Hmmm, do you really think that's wise from a soul-protection perspective, with the devil coming back and all that? He's bound to be pissed.

Well, maybe it wouldn't be a good idea for any of us normal people, but it's a viable plan for John Constantine. The series is coming to Global and NBC on Oct. 24, and Ryan was in Toronto on Wednesday as part of the annual Shaw Media upfront presentation.

Based on the comic-book series Hellblazer from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter John Constantine specializes in giving hell to hell. He is armed with a knowledge of the dark arts and a wit and demeanour that is half Dr. House, half Gordon Ramsay.

“With all the characters I've watched, you do reference different characters from TV, a little dash of this and a little dash of that,” said Ryan, who is from Wales. “But it's all in the comics, and the thing for me was trying to lift the comic off the page.

“It's a fine balance to be able to get the humour and the darkness of it as well. Hopefully I've done that and we'll be able to continue to do it. But all this stuff is nothing to him now. He's a bit of a know-it-all, and yet he learned the hard way, by making mistakes that had consequences and people suffered. The outward wit and even the charm is kind of a defence mechanism.”

With his soul already damned, John aches to leave his demon-fighting behind. But when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths), the daughter of one of John’s oldest friends, he reluctantly is thrust back into the fray.

Before long, it’s revealed that Liv has “second sight,” which John does not have. With a mysterious new evil rising, John and Liv must work together.

“He needs her as much as she needs him,” Ryan said.

“He's not a typical hero. He's a working-class anti-hero. He doesn't have any special powers, which I think sets this show apart from the other (comic-book/superhero) shows.”

In other Shaw Media news, Big Brother Canada, which has been a massive hit for two seasons on Slice, is moving to Global for its third season.

“The show kind of outgrew the channel, and I'm not sure I've ever seen that before,” said Barb Williams, the senior VP of content at Shaw Media.

“There's a business decision here. Big Brother Canada is a very expensive show to make. And a specialty platform can only generate so much revenue. A bigger platform generates bigger revenue, even if the audience is relatively similar. We have an opportunity to monetize it quite differently on the bigger platform.”

More new shows acquired by Shaw Media for Global include NCIS: New Orleans, Stalker, Madam Secretary, Gracepoint, State of Affairs, Mulaney, Partners and Heroes Reborn.

Elsewhere on the specialty-channel side, the time-travelling drama Outlander will debut Aug. 24 on Showcase. Plus, two new Shaw channels are on the way: FYI (a rebrand of Twist) in the fall, and Crime Investigation (a rebrand of Mystery) in December.

This fall sees the launch of three new DC Comics-based TV series across three different networks, including FOX's Gotham, CW's The Flash (joining Arrow) and NBC's Constantine, debuting on Friday, October 24th, paired with Grimm.

A new adaptation of DC’s Hellblazer comics, Constantine stars Matt Ryan (Assassin’s Creed IV) as the title character, John Constantine, a demon hunter and master of the occult. Starring alongside Ryan is Lucy Griffiths (True Blood) as Liv, the daughter of an old friend of Constantine, who has her own abilities that prove crucial when it comes to thwarting evil.

I spoke to Ryan and Griffiths about their characters, what it’s like starring in a comic book adaptation, working with director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones’ “Blackwater”) and more.

IGN: It looks like the show has a fun mixture of different elements.

Matt Ryan: Yeah, definitely. I think as with the source material, there's so much to draw from in terms of the character and the balance of humor and wit and dark and gritty. It's great, because John has this kind of real sarcastic, ironic British wit. It's funny, but at the same time it's serious and dark and gritty. It's got it all, I think.

IGN: Can you talk about the dynamic between your characters? What does Liv make of John?

Lucy Griffiths: Like how all women like to feel about men, she loves him and she hates him. She thinks he's an absolute idiot, and she just finds him annoying. At the same time, she can't deny that he's a genius, and she's thrilled by what he has to offer her in terms of excitement. He's irresistible to her from that point of view.

Ryan: But dangerous to her as well.

Griffiths: Yeah, and she helps him. She's his psychic sidekick.

IGN: As you just referenced, your character has some abilities too…

Griffiths: Yeah, I actually have more magic than him. [Laughs]

Ryan: Not so much "magic." Let's be firm on this! But no, she actually has an ability, and John seeks her out because he's got a message from beyond the grave, from an old friend of his, whose daughter is in trouble. That's Lucy's character Liv. Then John goes about saving her and at the same time discovers that she has this ability. So then he kind of uses that ability and slightly manipulates her, but they need each other, and they set about trying to rid the world of all the evil.

IGN: This is obviously based on a beloved comic book. Have you started to immerse yourself in that background?

Ryan: Yeah, man. That's just the most amazing thing.

Griffiths: It’s fantastic.

Ryan: There’s over 300 issues of the Hellblazer comic alone.

Griffiths: I was so shocked by the artwork… as in, I was amazed!

Ryan: Yeah, there's just so much source material to glean from. I've read about 100 of them now, so I’ve got a way to go.

IGN: Hey, you’re about a third of the way through!

Ryan: It's great, man. As an actor, your research is reading comic books. That's not a bad job, right?

IGN: It's got to be cool, too, when the first picture of you in-character came out and people were saying, "There's Constantine!"

Ryan: Yeah, and we're trying to stay as close to the source material as possible and really do the comics justice. So, hopefully, we can do that.

Griffiths: It’s pretty faithful!

IGN: How was it working with Neil [Marshall] on the pilot? I’m a big fan of his work.

Griffiths: I was just so comforted by the fact that he was English -- which sounds silly, but when you're used to working away from home -- but that was an instant comfort; that's the only way I can really explain it.

Ryan: I thought he was great. I've been a fan of his for awhile as well. The Descent, Dog Soldiers, those films, I've loved for years, and the tones of those. As soon as I knew that he was part of the team, I was thrilled. For this kind of thing, you really do need someone with that vision to get that kind of tone right.

Griffiths: He's got a very calm demeanor on set as well.

IGN: Your show is one of several DC Comics shows coming out around the same time. They're on different networks, but is it still kind of fun to know that there's sort of this brotherhood of superheroes gathering on TV?

Ryan: Yeah!

Griffiths: Yeah, except for we've got to win. Let's not forget the competitive element!

Ryan: [Laughs] I think it's the new golden age of comic books, isn't it? It's great to see DC having so many shows on the air as well. It's just a fantastic opportunity for NBC, I think, on a Friday night, to have this genre. We follow Grimm, and I think that that's a fantastic thing for fans of this genre. They can really get a kick out of that.
