El elenco de "Legends Of Tomorrow" adelantan a un 'hastiado' Oliver en 2046: 'Él le falló a la Ciudad'
Por Matt Webb Mitovich / 24 Feb 2016, 12:32 PM PST

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will get a blast from the… future, when an unexpected detour lands the time travelers in a decimated Star City, where they bump into a dulled Green Arrow (played by Arrow star Stephen Amell).

In the CW freshman’s sixth episode, “Star City 2046” (airing Thursday at 8/7c), Rip Hunter and the Waverider team touch down in the titular town some 30 years after they first embarked on their mission to stop Vandal Savage — though it takes a moment for the marauded metropolis to register as anything familiar.

“We crash-land because Legends of Tomorrowwe are being fired upon by the Time Masters, so we don’t know what we’re getting into when we step out onto the street,” Brandon Routh, who first played Ray Palmer aka The Atom on Arrow, previewed during TVLine’s visit to the series’ Vancouver set. “We realize that it is Star City when we I recognize the Palmer Tech building, though it’s not quite the same. It has… a different logo.”

Surveying their most surprising rest stop, the team comes to realize that Star City “is decimated in a way that it hasn’t ever been — even though it has gone through a lot,” notes Ciara Renee, who in December passed through the town as Kendra/Hawkgirl. “There are gangs running everything, the whole place is on fire…. For our Star City locals, Sara and Ray, it’s really shocking.”

“It’s not a very happy place,” echoes Sara Lance’s portrayer, Arrow alum Caity Lotz. “It’s a Disneyland for criminals, so I don’t think Rory and Snart mind it too much.” But for Sara and Ray, there’s the soul-crushing realization that Star City met this fate in part because of the two hometown heroes’ absence. “One of the reasons this happened is because I wasn’t there to help,” Lotz says in character.

Rip does his best to assure everyone that what they are laying eyes upon is only a possible future — “It’s not a true history,” as Routh puts it —and thus they should not to get caught up in righting wrongs. But With Snart and Rory intoxicated by the pervasive and welcoming criminal element, and Sara and Ray fixated on their fallen home, that is much easier said than done.

As seen in previous episodes,Legends of Tomorrow “There is always the risk of people going off and getting sucked into things that for him are not priorities,” says Arthur Darvill, who plays the disgraced Time Master. “So bringing them to a place that they’re familiar with, where they’ve got roots, is really dangerous.”

On at least one occasion, Sara and Ray’s roots will rise up to meet them, when Star City’s onetime savior, the Green Arrow aka Oliver Queen, “confronts us. Or at least what we think is him confronts us,” says Routh, likely alluding to the existence of another archer, Connor Hawke (played by Joseph David-Jones). What ensues is a search for their old friend, whom they had believed to be dead come 2046. And no one is prepared for what they eventually find.

In addition to sporting a beard and prosthetic arm (but not some extra pounds, as producers considered early on but later nixed), “Oliver is jaded, hard, and a little bitter. He failed the city. Everyone failed the city,” says Lotz, who was excited to reteam with Arrow‘s Amell.Legends of Tomorrow “I think we work really well off of each other. [Sara and Oliver] always have such good chemistry.” (Of her former costar’s aged portrayal, she laughs, “I felt like he was such an old man, like, ‘Get of my lawn!'”)

“It was great filming the scenes with Stephen,” adds Darvill, whose character had never before met Oliver. “They’ve created a world in which these three shows [The Flash included] exist, so it’s great when you see the links between them.”

All told, as the disparate team members wrestle with either familiar friends (and their foes) or the temptation to re-embrace the thug life, the end result is “one of the first episodes that felt like we were shooting a big movie,” Darvill raves. “There are a couple of really good fights in it, and there are some big, big set pieces that up the scale of the show. It has a very different feel than the rest of the season.”

And amid it all, there may even be the onset of the show’s first new romance.

“Sparks of a sort start to happen for Ray…,” Routh shares, cryptically adding: “All relationships are complicated!”

During Thursday’s episode of Legends of Tomorrow, the team finds themselves crash-landed in Star City 2046, where the nightmarish landscape has been overrun by bad guys. “It’s pretty darn different,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim says. “Basically this is a Star City that’s gone straight to hell. It’s the worst version of Star City that we’ve ever seen on any of the shows. It is gone completely and utterly to hell. That’s, in large part, due to the fact that there’s no more Oliver Queen to protect the city. What does that mean?”

What that means is there’s a new Green Arrow in his stead, Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones), who didn’t take too kindly to Sara (Caity Lotz), Ray (Brandon Routh), and the rest of the Legends landing in his city last week. “Initially, when we introduce him, he’s in this future version of Star City where everything is destroyed and the city is run by two separate gangs,” Jones says. “He hasn’t grown up in a city where there were heroes, so these people look like another group of criminals in costumes showing up in the city. At first, he’s there to scare them away from the city. That first shot ends up being a warning shot, but things escalate pretty quickly, because they fire back at him and then it does become an altercation.”

Though Connor doesn’t trust them at first, Sara and Ray’s connection to the city helps thaw the tension. “He ends up trying to help them with their mission to try to get back onto their time machine and save things, but only because [Sara] has this relationship with Oliver Queen and the city,” Jones says. “Oliver Queen, who he believes to be dead, was one of his heroes. That’s why he’s picked up the mantle of the Green Arrow.”

Surprise, surprise: Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is not actually dead — though he is missing his arm and sporting a goatee. “When they find out he’s actually alive, it’s almost a hurt feeling because he’s there in this city and he knows that I’ve been doing this for the past couple years now by myself,” Jones says. “I’m constantly being shot at just doing everything on my own trying to stop these two large gangs. He hasn’t been there to help me. This person was my hero. It has that shattering ‘don’t meet your heroes’ effect in the beginning.”

There’s no time to dwell, however, as the past comes back to haunt them in the form of — at least what the pictures indicate — Deathstroke. “I would say the threat that they’re facing is a familiar mask, not necessarily a familiar face,” Guggenheim teases. “I’ll just say, Ray delivers the line, ‘This is not a nice family.’ That’s my tease for who the bad guy is.”

With old and new heroes aligning with the Legends, Thursday’s episode is shaping up to be a treat for fans of the Berlanti-verse and the DC comics universe as a whole. “The episode probably has more applause moments and fun, wish-fulfillment moments of anything that we’ve done, certainly on Legends, just because it’s an episode of Legends, but Oliver Queen figures prominently,” Guggenheim says. “Let’s put it this way, he’s not alone.”

n the second part of my new Stephen Amell interview – click here for what he had to say about the current storylines on Arrow in part one – we turn to the actor’s big guest role on Legends of Tomorrow this week. While Amell has already guest starred as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on Legends, he’ll be doing so in a very different manner this time out – playing the Oliver of 2046.

Amell discussed this version of Oliver, which sports both the classic Oliver Queen comic book goatee and is missing an arm, much like the older version of Green Arrow seen in The Dark Knight Returns. We also discussed 2046’s Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones), the possibility of Green Arrow ever meeting Supergirl (now that The Flash is doing a crossover) and much more.

IGN: Now, let me ask you about Legends. You cameoed in the premiere, but of course that was the modern-day Oliver we already know. What was it like getting to do such a different version of this character now that you've played him for a few years?

Amell: Well, it was incredibly exciting. It was probably, in terms of Oliver Queen, it was right up there with the first time that I got to put on the suit in the pilot. It was right up there. It was so much fun to play this older, not necessarily wiser, sort of reclusive, defeated version of Oliver. I mean, how often do you get to jump 30 years in the future and play this version of yourself? Of course, once I tweeted that Oliver would never have the goatee, I mean, you're just setting yourself up for failure. This became inevitable. I wouldn't say it was 100 percent my idea, but once we came up with this conceptually and they asked me if I would like to do it -- which was not a fait accompli, because my priorities lie with Arrow and making sure that we stay on track with that production, so it was a matter of getting me free to do Legends. But once we figured that out logistically, I was the one that was like, "Look, we gotta do the goatee. We have to. I mean, we have to. This is our chance. This is our license. We can do whatever we want. We gotta do the goatee." And they were like, "Okay! Sure. Why not?"

IGN: What's cool to me is there’s an amalgam going on here of the classic comics Oliver, with the goatee, mixed with the Dark Knight Returns Oliver, missing the arm. Was that just a lot of conversations between all of you guys about deciding to mash up these iconic versions of this character, because, like you said, this was your chance to do it all?

Amell: Yeah, the whole missing arm thing was always going to be the way that it was. Marc [Guggenheim] and Greg [Berlanti] were just like, "It's 2046. He's missing an arm, period." It's a very interesting and appropriate nod to the comics. That was logistically challenging, because we had to figure, "Okay, how do we then get him out into battle, and how does he fire an arrow with one arm?" I think the solution that we came up with was really interesting, but there are scenes where we see Oliver without the arm, with a missing limb, and they're very interesting scenes. I was very proud of them. It was nice to work with -- I always like working with Caity Lotz, because we were partners in crime basically for an entire year, with a lot of really challenging shooting, both in present day and in the flashbacks. So I'll always have a special place in my heart for Caity Lotz.

IGN: How much info do we get on what happened to Oliver and where the other people in his life are in this appearance?

Amell: Not a ton. We don't get a ton of info. Conclusions could be drawn, but, again, much like how Oliver and Felicity have to compartmentalize the secret of William being revealed, what happened to Team Arrow and all those people that we've come to know and love in Star City is something that we have to leave on the back burner a little bit. But one thing that I will say is that there is a couple of lasting legacies for characters that people know, that we do see in Star City in 2046.

IGN: Then of course there's Connor Hawke, who we saw at the end of the last episode. In the comics, Connor is Oliver's son. Anything you can say about who he is here, since he has seemingly taken on the Green Arrow mantle?

Amell: He has, because there's a personal stake in it for him. I think Oliver respects what he's doing and respects going out, putting on the suit, putting on the mask and how challenging that is, especially considering the state of Star City. But I don't know if Oliver fully appreciates how he's representing himself personally, as Connor Hawke.

IGN: When Arrow began, things were pretty grounded, and then the universe began to build, as you brought in Barry Allen, and now there's a lot more fantastical elements. With this Legends appearance, we're seeing him in the future, though he himself hasn't traveled through time - but still, the modern day Oliver now knows time travel is possible. Would you like to continue to expand the boundaries of what Oliver's experiences are? At some point do you think he could actually go into even more fantastic realms?

Amell: Yeah, of course. As long as we're on the air, the more fantastical things are going to get, you know what I mean? You gotta keep pushing the envelope. I think anything that exists within the three shows -- or the four shows, as the case may be -- is in play, 100 percent. I don't think that there is anything off the table. If that means time travel, if that means other Earths, if that means more mystical powers, superpowers... You know, we're introducing a character [on Arrow], Vixen, that is able to summon the spirit, an aura, of different animals and morph into them. So that's definitely not something that we saw in Season 1, or Season 2 for that matter, and I like that.

Arrow at its core is always going to be the show without powers, right? I'd say it's probably the most grounded of the three. So when we get down to the nitty-gritty and when we get into more important episodes and when it's time to put the button on our story, it's always going to be a certain type of story that represents our show. In the interim, it is always very nice to bring in these elements, if for no other reason than they add levity. I like seeing how David Ramsey as Diggle reacts to superpowers. Love it. I like having to explain to the group that time travel exists. I like those moments, because they provide, I wouldn't say comedic relief, but just a little bit of levity that is important for both the viewer and the actor over the course of 23 episodes.

IGN: You mentioned there being four shows. Now that Grant is doing the first Supergirl crossover, would you like to see what Oliver makes of her too eventually?

Amell: Sure! In this iteration of the DC Universe, the "Television Universe" as it were, I'm the guy that's been around the longest, so I always feel -- whether I'm on a show or I'm not on a show -- I always feel as though I can in some way, shape or form represent them, and I always want them to be wildly successful and last for many more years than we end up lasting, because I just want to see people have success. So I would love to go over to Supergirl. That would be a blast, if for no other reason than I miss shooting in Los Angeles. [Laughs]

IGN: You set me up for where I was going to go next, which is that it must be really cool for you that you were there at the beginning of all this and to see how this world has expanded, knowing it all began with you as Oliver Queen.

Amell: Yeah. To be clear, I don't take credit for any of it. I think that it lies, principally, in the vision of Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, but I think we've fostered a really interesting and cool and vibrant universe that has given a lot of people both in front of and behind the camera an opportunity to succeed. You know, I always analogize things to sports, but hopefully it's like one of those really awesome and successful coaching trees, where one person sort of establishes a philosophy and then, however many years later, 20 years later, 30 years later, you can look at the genesis point and point to all of these wonderful careers that sprung of it. I know that, with respect to what we're doing right now, there are a lot of people -- like myself, for example -- who this was my first real, big opportunity. So I'm very proud of it. I'm very proud of where we are and what we're working on.

IGN: Lastly, anything you can say about what appears to be a version of Deathstroke that we're going to see on Legends of Tomorrow?

Amell: …It's a Wilson.

IGN: Should we assume he's as formidable as Slade Wilson?

Amell: All Wilsons are formidable.

Descubrid a quién estuvo a punto de fichar LEGENDS OF TOMORROW como el futuro Oliver Queen
Por Sydney Bucksbaum 25 Feb, 2016

What a week it has been for comic book fans. Arrow‘s Diggle (David Ramsey) took a trip over to The Flash to battle King Shark, the animated Vixen (Megalyn Echikunwoke) was brought to life on Arrow, Agent Carter got a dose of Dancing with the Stars, the Flash (Grant Gustin) was spotted on set of Supergirl to film the multi-network crossover… and now Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is heading to Legends of Tomorrow! Seriously, what a time to be alive.

When the Legends team crash lands in Star City in 2046, they’re going to be in for the shock of their lives to find Oliver as an old man, not to mention their former home in ruins. But while Amell was recruited to play an older version of his Arrow character on the DC Comics spinoff, the role was very nearly given to a different actor.

“There was a time where we were talking about what actor we were going to hire to play Oliver,” executive producer Phil Klemmer tells Nerdist. “We had casting sessions with all these strapping silver studs. It would have been totally fine if we had that Avatar actor, who played the villain, that guy [Stephen Lang] would have been a great 60-something Oliver Queen. But it all ended up working out so we could get Stephen and all the resources to make him legitimately look like a 60-year-old guy. That was the real achievement.”

According to Klemmer, the writers always knew that they’d explore Star City as a post-apocalyptic wasteland from “day one.” But they just weren’t sure of how to pull off an aged Oliver Queen.

“We originally talked about having Stephen come on to play Oliver, but it’s one of those things you could barely get your hopes up about,” Klemmer says. “We were like, ‘There’s no way that’s going to work. Either he’s going to be too busy or someone will tell us we can’t do that or the special effects makeup would be too complicated or expensive to make him look like a 65-year-old man.’ We didn’t allow ourselves to believe it would happen. It was until we got dailies that it really sunk in. He turned in such a great performance where he’s still Oliver Queen, but he’s a different man. He’s not just older, he’s a man who’s been really changed in a hideous way by the past 30 years.”

And that’s not the only jaw-dropping nugget of knowledge Klemmer revealed about tonight’s shocking episode, “Star City 2046.” Check out the full Q&A below!

Nerdist: Why was now the time to show a post-apocalyptic future on Legends?

Phil Klemmer: By definition they have to fail at least 16 times for us to have a season of TV. We were interested in going to the future and seeing Star City, half of our characters’ home—it’s our version of doing It’s a Wonderful Life. We’ve had enough near-death experiences with our team so it’s time for us to contemplate, “What if they never make it home?” It’s not going to be, “What if they were never born?” But when they return to Star City in 2016, Sara [Caity Lotz] and Ray [Brandon Routh] get to see what the world looks like 30 years after their disappearance if they fail. And Rip [Arthur Darvill] told them he chose them because they had little effect on the timeline if they failed, so this is a gut punch when they realize that maybe that was true globally, for the future of the world, but in the immediate sense of the people in their lives like Oliver Queen, their loss was dearly, dearly felt. Our characters will grapple with guilt upon seeing their city go to hell in their absence.

So what does Oliver Queen look like 30 years in the future?

The version of Oliver that we encounter is a bit of a broken man. Being a superhero vigilante is not a career that is meant for longevity. The Oliver we encounter is the Oliver who had a lot of his friends and allies disappear in 2016. So it’s extremely painful, especially for Sara, to find this Oliver who blames her in a sense for the fact that they went off on this other TV show to try to stop Vandal Savage [Casper Crump]. The consequence of that was that Oliver was left a little shorthanded in trying to resist the forces of evil that has always threatened his home. Oliver is an aging fighter, and he’s lost a lot more than we realize. Not only is he physically broken, but he’s also been spiritually defeated. Sara takes responsibility for that.

How much consulting did you have to do with the Arrow team on writing this future Oliver? Or did you just have free rein to do as you please since it’s only a possible future?

One of the nice things about having [executive producer] Marc [Guggenheim] on this show is that you don’t’ have to appeal for approval. Once it’s hashed out on Legends, it works for the Arrow-verse. For us, it was more wondering how Stephen would feel about it, but fortunately he was thrilled by the challenge of playing a version of himself that wasn’t just 30 years older, but was also a man who was affected by 30 seasons of Arrow that we haven’t seen. Things haven’t gone as well as any of us would have hoped in that time.

At the end of last week’s episode, the Legends crew came across someone in a Green Arrow costume who was definitely not Oliver Queen. That’s Connor Hawke, right?

The fans are pretty smart when it comes to that. So how did the new Green Arrow come to be born from seasons of Arrow we haven’t seen? What’s his connection to the current Arrow-verse? That’s what we’re dealing with in the episode, explaining why Oliver is no longer the Arrow and who this new Arrow, Connor Hawke, is. They have very strong feelings about one another. It was not a placid passing of the bow. These men have a lot of turbulence and resentment and a shared history and a shared love of a third party.

Is Connor going to be Oliver’s son like he is in the comics?

No, we chose to go a different route. But it’s one that will hopefully be no less titillating.

How will the Legends team be affected by this future of Star City?

We have such a disparate team of heroes and villains, so we’ve got guys like Ray Palmer who’s like, “Oh my god! Everything I tried to accomplish in life is literally in smoking ruins!” And then we have guys like Snart [Wentworth Miller] and Rory [Dominic Purcell] who step off the Waverider and see the smoldering wreckage of Star City and they’re like, “This is awesome! This is what we wanted, a lawless city run by criminals! This is paradise!” They sort of forget their mission like when The Odyssey heads to the land of the Lotus-eaters. While everyone sees this futuristic place as a steaming shithole, Snart and Rory want to stay there and become kings of this new world. Screw saving the world, this is the version of the world they want to see come to pass.

Are there any other cameos you’re excited about?

It’s already been speculated we’ve got an appearance of Deathstroke. We’re not dealing with a very old Deathstroke, it’s a Deathstroke Jr. One geriatric superhero was all that we could tolerate. [Laughs] One of the sad things we learn in this episode is how many people have disappeared or died or thrown in the towel. The tide of evil and wickedness has washed over the city. It’s more haunting to see who isn’t there, is how I’d put it.

The new Green Arrow was unmasked during Thursday’s episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow — but it probably wasn’t who you were expecting.

The Emerald Archer who unceremoniously greeted the Legends upon their arrival in Star City 2046 was Connor Hawke (Joseph David-Jones), who is actually — surprise, surprise — the son of John Diggle (David Ramsey), not the son of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as portrayed in the comics.

“We know on Arrow that Oliver already has a son, William, who is not Connor Hawke,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim tells EW. “It just felt a little duplicative in light of the fact that this season we’re doing a storyline about Oliver having a son. It felt like, ‘Oliver’s got a son on Arrow! He’s got another son on Legends!’ As we were talking about it, quite frankly I forget who pitched the idea of, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if this was Diggle’s son?’ but it seemed organic, especially since we took the idea of Oliver as the dad off the table.” And in case you’re wondering, that was this version of the Green Arrow who popped up in the speed cannon on The Flash.

In this version of the future, Star City has become a wasteland after Deathstroke’s son, Grant Wilson (Jamie Andrew Cutler), leads an army into a rebellion that destroys the city. During the Uprising, that’s when John Diggle is killed and Oliver Queen presumably dies. “The city’s broken and my father’s gone and I’m trying to be the hero that I thought Oliver Queen was, because he’s no longer there and he was the last symbol of hope that the city had,” Jones says. Below, the actor gives insight into Connor’s motivations, as well as whether we’ll see him again in, ahem, the future:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Has everything that Connor Hawke has done been driven by losing his dad?
JOSEPH DAVID-JONES: It is. The reason he doesn’t take Diggle as his name — his name is John Diggle Jr. — is because he feels regret about not being strong enough to save his father. He doesn’t even deserve to have his father’s name, because he was too weak to protect him or help him during this Uprising. He takes the name Connor Hawke until he can live up to his father’s name and become strong enough to defend the city and be the hero that the Green Arrow was.

Did he have any kind of relationship with Diggle before his death?
Yeah, up until the death. It doesn’t come up in the episode at what point in time he was killed, but the writers told me he grew up with his father — he loves his father. His father was taken when he was a teenager. Connor was definitely there and able to remember his father and all the values his father taught him.

Do you think getting to cross paths with people who knew his father brings out a more vulnerable side to Connor?
I think it happens briefly when he sees that Oliver Queen is still out there. He knows who Oliver Queen is and knows who the Green Arrow is in this universe. He knows that he was close to his father. We do see a lighter side of him toward the end when the conflict is resolved. He looks up to Oliver Queen, because he knows that his father loved this man. We see a lot of that at the end of this. In the beginning, he is kind of hiding the fact that he’s John Diggle’s son. He doesn’t want these people to know because it’s a moment of shame that he let his father die. No one knows until Oliver comes and reveals it.

Legends of Tomorrow plans to cycle in different heroes on the team. Is there a possibility we could see Connor Hawke as part of the team at any point?
I think there is a strong possibility. I’m talking to the writers about what they plan on doing as far as bringing me back as potentially a series regular or recurring for the show. Nothing has been decided. It’s all so up in the air, but I know they do plan on cycling different heroes onto the ship, so we’ll have to see. I hope this isn’t the last time we’ll see Connor Hawke.
